    Heard this noise in the morning. Sure enough this video diagnosed my noise. Thanks brother

    Awesome video! I think this is what's wrong with mine. I've started getting such a loud, bass rumble at highway speeds. I also noticed a clanking noise when I would shift from reverse to drive.

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! Yep, that sounds like the symptom. Luckily this is a very easy DIY job to do that can save you $$. Let me know if you have any questions during your install.

    Awesome video and thanks for sharing. I'm coming up on 180K on my GX so I'm sure I will have to do this job soon. Luckily I'm down the street for the place you got your parts from.

      Thank you! Yes, unfortunately you may run into this eventually. You can grease the driveshaft to prevent the west that happened to mine and get more mileage out of it though. The great thing is that it’s any easy job to do yourself and that Wesley Chapel dealer is great.

    IIIRC, there was some talk about using 460 driveshafts (an “upgraded” version”) - what was your consensus on that

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question! I should have mentioned that the earlier years of the GX470 had a driveshaft issue which was later replaced before the end of the GX470 era(later model 470s got the upgrade). It’s the same part number for the GX460, so this will get you the “upgrade” you’re referring to.

    Just pulled my front driveshaft off today, the joint at the front diff was shot. I’m going with just replacing the u joints themselves and not the whole shaft. Hopefully you kept yours, rebuild them and have a spare set!

      Awesome! Great choice in rebuilding yours. Yes, I have a spare rebuilt driveshaft and CV axles in case something happens on the trail

    Great video! I see traces of oil leaking on the transmission area which should be leaking from the rear main seal. Can you make a video how to replace it?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll have to double check to verify it's not my rear main seal, but there is currently oil all over that area due to a failed valve cover gasket. I'll be doing a video on that replacement soon. If the rear main seal is gone, then I'll also be making a video on that. Thanks for reaching out!

  • @delldavis6222

    Are the universible joints not replaceable?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They are replaceable, but the tube shaft isn’t and with this many miles I’m just throwing a new driveshaft on. The new oem driveshaft isn’t that expensive either.

  • @jw4867
    @jw4867 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Man I had the exact same noise. I thought it might be a wheel bearing but it was the front drive shaft. I changed the rear shaft and did the universal joint for the front.

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s so awesome to hear this was also your fix. I never changed a driveshaft before…pretty simple and very satisfying to have that noise gone!

    So just to be clear, after you mark the old driveshaft, you match it up with the new driveshaft and make those same marks?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got it! And ensure the marks on the old drive shaft extend onto the front diff and transfer case so you have marking there as well.

    Hi, my GX460 has thumb only when cold, still underwarranty but lexus wont repair, so how can i repair? It only feels when cold outside like 40f below

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for reaching out! So were they able to confirm it's an issue with the driveshaft? If so, just replace it yourself like in the video...or pay a local shop to replace if you aren't comfortable doing the replacement.

  • @ayo1699
    @ayo1699 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video man, wish i found it before I took off the driveshaft. I didn't mark the spots, what issue does that cause please?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. I personally had to think this through myself as I can't immediately think of what would go wrong if anything when things aren't phase aligned. I could be wrong since I'm not a drivetrain expert, but it would seem that both the front differential and the transfer case are symmetrical components in that I wouldn't expect there to be any catastrophic issues from phase differences. I honestly did it because it made sense at the time, but thinking about it more makes me feel there shouldn't be an issue. Maybe someone can chime in and tell me why this could be bad?

    • @ayo1699
      @ayo1699 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Awesomoto I appreciate the response, been driving it, nothings happened, knock on wood

    • @erikisackson8297
      @erikisackson8297 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The shaft itself is balanced but the phasing on the transfer case and diff ends shouldn’t matter. It’s not a problem if you don’t take the u joints apart

    What is this 'phase' of which you speak?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I’m referring to the phase as in the phase angle of the drive shaft. Or in simpler terms, making sure the angle/position is the same. These driveshafts come balanced from factory, so I don’t know how much it matters, but it’s easy enough to match the angle of the original driveshaft to the new. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and reaching out! 🙏🏻

    • @Shalmaneser1
      @Shalmaneser1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Awesomoto yes. Separation of the spline allows for independent rotation of the halves. It's possible that balancing was done with the spline assembled. It's also possible that balancing was done with u-joints installed. There is no discussion of orientation to mounting plates.

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Shalmaneser1
    @Shalmaneser1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The spline in the rear shaft doesn't grease properly. One is better off removing, separating, cleaning, and greasing the spline.

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that info. I'm about to replace that rear shaft since I have a spare now.

  • @cars_go_fast
    @cars_go_fast ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only thing I've seen recommended that you did not do was to actually remove the zerk fitting for the slip yoke on the driveshaft and find a curb or dip to drive the GX over a few times to get the slip yoke to go through its travel. With the zerk fitting removed if there is too much grease it will just spit out the excess. If you over-grease the slip yoke you run the potential of blowing the seals out when the driveshaft compresses and can't compress the grease
    I grease mine every oil change along with my JBA UCAs and I'll pull that zerk fitting and do a quick drive just in case
