- At Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, there's a class on covering the complexities of religion and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is co-taught by a Jewish professor and a Palestinian professor. Ari Goldman and Greg Khalil don't always agree - but that's precisely the point. Amid the turmoil on campus this year, they aimed to teach their students how to respectfully listen to those with differing viewpoints, and journalistically cover all aspects of the conflict with both objectivity and empathy.

I’m glad these two can sit down together and I pray for a peaceful two state solution. At the same time, I’m tired of the lies and disingenuousness. The Arabs started war with the nascent state of Israel in 1948 and several times after that. They were offered a two state solution several times but refused the deal each time. I can see that there are moderate Palestinians but their society is largely driven by radical Islamism and hate. I’m not saying Israel is perfect but I believe the suffering of the Palestinians was and is mainly self inflicted - including and especially the current situation in Gaza, brought on knowingly by Hamas’ and Islamic Jihad’s attack on October 7th. By the way, before the intifadas there were no check points or walls and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians went to work in Israel. The more there is violence coming from the Palestinians the more hardline the Israelis become. At the same time, there are 2 million Arab citizens of Israel with equal rights. I hope for change but it will be difficult…
If neither professor mentions the hostility of the Muslim Arabs from as early as the 1920s and refusals of partition plans and 2 state solutions, all the riots, pogroms, wars, intifadas and violence they started and continue to carry out, the professors are omitting an important reason why Israel tends to be hypervigilant about security. We just saw what happened when they were lax. The October 7th massacre, when Hamas broke the last ceasefire. Neither the Jews nor the Muslim Arabs ruled Palestine. So who was going to persuade the British and the UN who should rule the tiny sliver of a country in the split-up Ottoman Empire? (Never mind that most became Arab Muslim countries and there was no Jewish country anywhere) The Arabs refused the partition plan. They started a war. If you start a war, and leave villages because you are told to by your leader, because you are fighters, or because a battle starts and you want to get out of the way, why would you expect to be welcomed back when the other power wins the war? Why wouldn't the Israelis think that the Arabs would continue to be hostile? The Palestinian Liberation Organization was started before 1967, before disputed territories, before settlements. And why many assume that Palestinians are interested in peace, compromise and democracy is surprising to me. Where is the evidence? Where is the peace language or peace behavior? When was the last time there were elections in Gaza and West Bank, and opposition was allowed? How about in any neighboring country in the area?

But why is there a power imbalance? I feel it is because of hamas’ determination to destroy Israel, that Israel has to have such tight border controls and this of course results in a power imbalance. How do we get around this though when the Palestinian children are taught to hate Jews and Hamas steals the billions in aid to try and destroy Israel? There needs to be a change in attitude on both sides and a change in ideology on hamas’ side but until Hamas accepts that Israel is here to stay, I fear this will be extremely hard to achieve. Hopefully one day soon there will be two leaders who can agree on a meaningful peaceful 2 state solution.

This conversation is ok, but not very useful. Both guys are Americanized and looking at things through their Western lenses. Why ignore the fact that the Palestinians in the middle east are not interested in having a state next to Israel, they want one instead of Israel? It's a non-starter. Whose fault it is that the Palestinians don't have running water? They officially live in the territory that is not Israel proper. If they were interested in peace with Israel, I am sure they could have worked out a deal. The only way for peace to be possible is for people in the land to come to the negotiating table. Instead of supporting the resistance, the people in the West should signal to the Palestinians that the violence against Israel will not be tolerated and if they want peace, negotiation is the only way. Otherwise, you are just encouraging Hamas and prolonging the war.

Israel left Gaza in 2006 and they have been living under the constant rocket fire ever since. That is why they invented an Iron Dome. And just because they shoot down most of the rockets it doesn't make it ok to shoot them. There's a huge economic cost that comes with Iron Dome. Also the debris still falls and causes damage.

The Philistines were a people who vanished, and there is no connection to the new nation formed in the last century, who are basically refugees from Arab countries.
Palestinians are considered an “Arabized group” they are not primarily Arab genetically, their culture became Arabized over the years and they now consider themselves and are considered Arab, they have far more lineage that dates back to the Canaanites, just like Jewish lineage does, than from Arab groups (and, in fact, have more genetic similarities with Jews than any other non-Jewish group does)
And I can’t support that even more Jewish people than Palestinians were forced out of Arab and Moslem countries after the founding of the state of Israel. Nearly one million Jewish people had to flee countries that they lived in for over two millennia, long before the advent of Islam. They did not start a war with their Arab or Moslem neighbors that provoked their displacement. They were forced to flee because of Arab and Moslem persecution.
I am sick of Arabs claiming or implying that all of the land of Israel was taken by force with no consideration for the fact that land was purchased by Jewish people and agencies and the Arabs who did leave did so after neighboring Arab countries started a war of annihilation and lost. They always seem to forget that the original partition gave them the best and most fertile portions of the land and they rejected that and opted for a winner take all war. The Palestinians have, through their own actions and unwillingness to accept compromise and sharing, created a situation where Israel and its neighboring Arab countries find it extremely difficult to live with them in peace. They need to change and prove to the world that they can live in peace and accept compromise.

Israel created Hamas - not directly of course, but as a result of their treatment of Palestinians since 1947-48 and constant abrogation of their UN mandate and international law. TL;DR - you make people second class citizens, don’t be surprised when they resent you enough for extremists to arise.

There are popular peaceful Palestinian leaders, they are held in Israeli prisons. The “Palestinian Gandhi” the “Palestinian Nelson Mandela,” I’d encourage you to look them up, you will find them. Militancy is the most popular strategy only because every other has been blocked by Israel

Palestinians are not Arab in origin. Palestinians are Canaanite and Israelite in origin. Palestinians have more of the “Jewish DNA” than modern day Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Mizrahi Jews. I think it is important for modern Jews to understand that when God promised the land to Jacob’s descendants to live in forever, God meant it. That is why it is so critical that the people who call themselves the “Palestinian People” today remain on their land, for kicking them off permanently is an affront to YHWH.

Sadly, most of the pro-Palesitnian movement is against this kind of dialogue. They view it is "normalization." I wish the pro-Palestinian movement had this kind of additude.
This is exactly how not to have dialogue. Generalize and demonize. I will admit to being disappointed by many people’s opinions and rhetoric on both sides, but the lesson here is that we all need to become better listeners. Exactly. Israelis have worked incredibly hard at making the land fertile and establishing a diverse democracy with healthcare for all. They ask for peace at every turn. Every Palestinian leader has rejected every peace agreement, established a pay-to-slay program for "martyrs" and allowed for corruption, extremism and rampant misogyny. Gaza could have been a resort paradise like Shanghai or Dubai. They have been getting free water and fuel from Israel and billions in subsidies from the world. Israel doesn't have an open border policy for a reason. The walls (mostly fences) were built after the 2nd intifada, and regardless of a separate state, they will most likely stay there as borders, like they are now.

Fatah has agreed to a 2 state solution, even Hamas agreed to a 2 state solution under 1967 borders. Israel agreed to no form of 2 state, not any more, it is the people who provoked the assassination of Rabin for negotiating with Palestinians without even offering a 2 state who run the country now, and Netanyahu has made it his and his party’s primary mission to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state (which is why he bolstered Hamas in the first place, to weaken Fatah who the international community sees as more legitimate and exploit a rift in Palestinian politics)
Israel never wanted a 2-state solution, most evident by its devoting substantial efforts in the building and expansion of the settlements. You're really brainwashed into the Zionist narrative. It rejected it in 2002 when the Arab league put forward a peace initiative, and in 2001 during the so-called peace talks endorsed by the Clinton Administration, it refused to make any serious concessions (even the return of those in Jordan) that even a US negotiator said "way too often, we functioned like Israel's lawyer". First and formost, no one referred to themselves as "Palestinian" before 1948. There were Jews and there were Arabs. The term "Palestinian" was contrived by Arab nations when the Arabs in that area refused to live in peace with Israel and the Jews and wanted to return to their Arab homelands. The notion of displacement and Nekba is a generational lie that the Arab gov'ts came up with to continue their age old Jew hatred and to extinguish the idea of an ancestral Jewish homeland. Arabs have been attacking Jews since the beginning of time and it had nothing to do with land or "Palestine". Jews are indigenous to the land of Israel (Judea), Arabs were there as a result squatting on land of exiled Jews during the Arabian Conquest and later also travelled to the area for work for the British. Arabs were indigenous to the Arabian Pennisula..not this fictyional place called "palestine", which was never a sovereign nation with a gov't, a flag, or currency.

@@briannec2016 Look at ANY contemporaous source form the 1900s - 1940s. The term "Palestinian" did NOT refer to today's Palestinian Arabs. EVEN the 1947 UN partition plan did not refer to a "Palestinian state" - It referred to a "Jewish state" and an "Arab state" Why? Because Palestinian did not necessary mean Arab until the 1960s.
