I was at the 1981, 1991 and 1999 fairs. The unique thing about the 1999 fair is it coincided with the NRHS National Convention which took place in Sac in June of 1999 - in fact, that was the main reason the CRSM folks decided to sponsor a fair. I car hosted on the "City Of Tehama" which was the UP 844 excursion that ran between Sac and the town of Tehama. It was freakin' HOT during the entire convention.
Sierra #28 didn't get nearly as much attention as she should have. I didn't even notice she was there when I was a kid. That may be because I was only knee-high at the time.
Lol yah. Just happened to be there at the right time. When my family and I saw it happen, we didn't really know what was going on. We all thought it was making a show. We only heard about the tube failure a few days later after Railfair.
You never know what the future may bring. UP is restoring a Big Boy after all. Never would have ever that that would happen in a million years. And its happening. I bet there will be other Railfair's in the future :)
But getting footage of it is priceless considering it was such a rare occurrence. We didnt know what was going on, and chances are, you wouldn't have either since you were so young. It probably wouldn't have effected you back then.

I remember panning for gold to cool off 😂
If only I were born 30 years ago I would get to enjoy this.
I think they had to lay extra track for that fair. Would love to see another one of these some day. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
The 844 had a Flue Failure during Railfair 99.
Rip 844
That 844 footage at the beginning, I"m pretty sure I was on the other side of the track right then.

8:21, that was my fav part of all
I was really fortunate to have seen this. Those were the original guys. They were all in their mid to late 70s when this was taken.

Also, I have always lived in Sacramento
Nothing wrong with that. Just closer to the museum ^-^
more like the wrong time. that might have ruined my day to see a steamer blow up ;(
Not surprising. I think just about everybody was there except for the kitchen sink :P
Awesome.
Thats probably the reason ;-)
