Stadler Tests
On June 8th & 9th of 2024, Caltrain put all of their new Stadlers into their first full-schedule tests. I couldn't make it during the day, but I figured I'd get them coming and going at night. Sure enough, one after another arrived and left the station with only mins in between trains.

Class 37 Cold-start

Recently upgraded my Class 37. Upgraded the sound chip, speakers, and front-end detail. This cold-start lasts 2 and 1/2 mins!! Extremely realistic for anyone who's a fan of these locomotives. Now with the BR 85 arrival at the museum in Bochum Dahlhausen, BR 50 2973 makes her way back home. We see her exit Elleringhausen tunnel as she works much harder now to get her mixed goods train up to speed.

Can't actually go to Germany, so I gotta be a little creative on my own ;) Heading towards the Ruhr District, a mixed goods train with locomotives BR 50 2973 and restored BR 85 008 are on their way to Bochum Dahlhausen Railway Museum. In celebration of 008's return to steam.

Lets step back in time and just pretend for a moment... The year is 1955. My friends and I are all excited. Its day we've been looking forward to all year. The day to get in our car and chase SP 2486 on the San Joaquin Route. We manage to get the train leaving the Oakland station and chase it heading towards Bakersfield. 2486 opens her throttle and we pace her near the highway.

Best one day show on Earth. I missed it. Hope for next year. People were lined up for rides in P-57 mustang. Saw Northrup flying wing fly. Daly City to half moon bay. I went before covid. Best twenty bucks I ever spent. B-17 and all kinds of vehicles and car clubs It was cool.
It was a bit smaller this year than previous years, but it was still a fun day. Hope you do make it back again!

The Baggage Car and the two Shasta Daylight Chair Cars directly behind were apart of the SP Business Car fleet I believe.
I had a 1963 like this back in 1972, in a sickly flesh color. That car could move!

My buddy's dad, across the street, had a 1963 blue Chrysler. He traded it for a blue 1966 Imperial! We were an Oldsmobile family.

I hope they run 2472 more on the Niles Canyon now that she’s back up to steam. She has a great 6 chime.
Nope, she's been permanently moved to the NWP line in Schellville. The line up there is longer and allows faster track speeds. Will be great to see her in action again :)

Nice! How early did you have to be there to catch dixiana firing up?
I'd say about an hour and a half before their first run, depending on the day you go. I can't remember when this was off-hand. Generally what they do after firing them up is taking it around the mountain for a test run before the day's first run.

I've used that spot many times! Looks great for videos! If you go further up, there are some places that provide you with really dramatic shots.

Thank you! I made it. I kit-bashed an undecorated Bachmann Shay into West Side #14. Was one of my more lengthy and detailed projects :)

Wow, first time I am seeing this. This is great! I have seen the Permanente local go by many times and I never get bored of it. Fortunately, UP has really improved the trackage and right of way since this video was produced.
Oh yah :) Tracks are all welded rail now. UP runs SD70s on it. Back when this film was shot, you could drive up to the cement factory on a hill and see the yard below. I'm pretty sure all of that is gated off by now. I haven't tried going up in a long time.
They actually run the SD59MXs, or SD32ECOs, which are rebuilds of the older SD60Ms. They run the LWS82 up to the cement plant sometimes, and sometimes the lumber plant on Friday nights.
@@calpeninsularailfan Also SD70s. Trust me. Back when SP was still running on the line, they used to run 3 times a week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. But now its just every once in a while.
@@dalecherne5377 I'm sure SD70s don't really operate on small branches like these a lot anymore, they have only run on this line until 2016-ish where the smaller 4 axle units took over. Also, the fact that it only runs Friday nights now, is because the cement does not need as much service as it used to due to COVID-19. PSR also prevented these trains from running more than once a week.
@@calpeninsularailfan I still see 6 axle units on the Permanente line. Not sure about other branch lines. I don't really follow a whole lot of them. They stopped running 3 times a week on the Permanente line way before Covid-19. At least 7 years prior. Other cement factories have opened since that time and the demand for that single location just isn't there.

I was really fortunate to have seen this. Those were the original guys. They were all in their mid to late 70s when this was taken.

thanks so much for these fantastic shots esp of the dashbaord of this amazing car. Chrysler had some of the most signature dashbaords of all time and this one is at the top of my list, pushbutton gears, and all. We had one, growing up in a maroon shade. Beautifully designed car.
