My theory is that they tested the water with Simorgh bird of perfection and when they saw it didn't do jackshit they printed circular expecting the same result.
And it really didn’t do much. Mathmech was never the best deck in TCG/OCG and while it was more represented in Tops in MD Branded won as much if not more tournaments (prior to Sprights).
Also, if you really want to look at true custom cards made by Konami, Toon Table of Contents, Snake Rain, Junk Speeder/Superancient Deep Sea King, or Misc fits that bill significantly well. The latter literally has a meme surrounding how op the card is (have you read misc).

2. It literally adds any one archetypal card, INCLUDING ITSELF.
3. This card is literally a pot of prosperity on steroids, and that card is often considered limit-worthy due to its ability to search cards.

In the future, decks will be specifically constructed to be able to FTK your opponent consistently on top of already being able to combo like a normal deck. We can already see this with the new wave of Trickstar and Gimmick Puppet support and SHS to a much lesser degree.

Look Konami you can make the most nutty cards in town but when ONE card moves the entire deck to make a super board on its own is a big no-no. Back then was "Whoever summoned CED/BLS first wins" and now is "Whoever summoned Poplar/Circular first wins".

the yubel fusion does requires materials, it just doesn't require the spell card, it's pretty much a power crept version of visas astraloud wich already is a pretty good card
I remember when restrictions on card effects were actual restrictions, and you were clever if you found a way to work that restriction to your advantage. Nowadays 'restrictions' are thinly-veiled bonus effects

And when I faced someone mix Tearlament then summon Arise-Heart at the end of their turn, I was like WTF the Tear does not have any restriction at all!?

1:15 while simultaneously having the offensive strength of a blue eyes. Why do so many boss monsters that have quick effect negation and all other forms of F U effects need to also be backed up by power a monster wanting to battle needs to gamble to pull off.
Imagine if somebody devised a point-based system for creating custom cards in order to at least try to make balanced custom cards? It would probably have to be a collaborative effort.

Konami needs to have a banlist nuke and revert powercreep intentionally. Like how they try to kill Dragon Rulers twice (1st with babys, then with actual Rulers), which birthed diverse formats including HAT that were slower until Duelist Alliance came out in late 2014.
At this point it would be easier to just make a 2nd format.

@@nav3346 old silly cards, gold moon coin, magical contract door, dark designator. all three are objectively bad because either you're making your opponent gain card advantage on you or you're using cards to destroy it in their hand which effects could've been used to remove their cards instead.

The thing is that the deck becomes completely unplayable paper weight if you ban poplar
if you ban most of the good cards the deck becomes instantly a lot worse since a lot of the deck power is concentrated in very few good cards, without ash + poplar the deck doesn't have a 1 card combo, without original sinfulspoils snake eyes NS poplar is no loner a 1 card combo and diabellstar can't go into the snake eyes engine making the deck go from up to 15+ starters to 6 at best(the deck also wont be able to be mixed with other decks like fire king and rescue ace), flamberge is nuts as well 3 bodies in 1 + a monster reborn if you use both effects on the same card
the one card i think the deck wouldn't miss that much is oak wich is kinda of a brick and the field spell wich is a good field spell for the deck but it's not like other decks field spells that rota for starters
probably the hardest hit would be banning the original sinfulspoils, the deck would lose the 6 starter/extender in wanted and diabelstar, 2~3 starters in ns poplar and wouldn't be able to be splashed in with other fire decks either but snake eyes themselves would need to splash complementary engines since the deck would not have enough starters
I see that "2 times remaining" on Dragonmaid-To-Order, and must applaud you on your excellent and discerning taste.
I think the step beyond Circular would Bloody Doll, where it adds itself back to hand. Cards which add themselves back to hand like Ikea Labyrnth will be the future. Every archetype will have a Sinister Serpent.

I remember back when my red eyes ultimate dragon with 3800 attack and no effect was considered too strong of a fake card, now it would be nothing next to all these offical cards
My theory is that by 2035 we will have multiple cards that can summon themselves from the deck without needing to draw them. It will be like if this card is your deck and you control no monsters, normal summon or special summon this card from your deck to your field.
The reason circular was absurd was the ridiculous amount of free bodies the cyberse extra deck toolbox generates
This brough up again a question I have had in the past. Is there a ceiling to power creep. I mean at this rate if Konami continues their strategy of selling new sets by printing stronger arch types and cards, there must be a point where everything is just too strong and the game just breaks. Some might argue that we already have went too far during the "Link era" But I'm pretty sure we thought the same back in the day with pendulums,etc. And the game has managed to go so much further in terms of power creep from the time pendulums were introduced.
Konami doesn't seem to be slowing down really at all and if they keep pushing the power of new cards even further what in the world is yugioh going to be in lets say another 5 to 7 years as its now been around 7 years since we got the first Link monsters.

And instead of increasing atk values if they keep making effects stronger at some point there is going to be a point where every card in your hand starts a 100 step combo ending with 5 backrow and 6 monsters with interruption or something else. might take 5 years or it might take 20 years it cant just go on forever
I would say that you got a point. There probably is a cieling where a player can ftk consistantly and not be able to be hand-trapped. Honnestly if there was a link 2 appo and enough ftk cards that dont rely on a normal summon the game is kinda over. Its not too far from being broken at this point honnestly, Plus a link 2 appo isnt too far fetched, they printed basically a link 2 knightmare unicorn with little night

We've already reached that, Konami's now giving decks built in FTK's like with Gimmick Puppets.
I wonder if there will be a point of no return, and if at that point the game will die or will finally resort to supporting different formats. We already have Speed and Rush duel, and first GOAT format and now Edison are growing in popularity. Or maybe the solution, alongside a variety of different formats, is pulling a MTG and introducing set rotation.

I think you can give a deck a custom card if a deck is bad enough, like mathmech for example
I've been adamant about how F.A. would be a top strategy if they got their own engage. Do I know that for certain, no.
But they have every tool under the sun. A dark law, a tax dragon, a spell/trap negate, a monster negate, all the 4 of the field spells are searchers (one on activation, the other 3 on destruction), Targeting protection, an extra normal summon, a level one tuner that can summon itself for free, a reborn each turn that protects itself from destruction (that also can't be targeted), a non-targeting pop, and all this only covers roughly half of what they have.
Aside from that, the reason why I believe this to be the case, is because it has a toolbox of cards like Sky striker and Runick, both which have searchers, being Engage and Tip respectively.
Therefore, all they need (hypothetically) is their own version of engage (that can pop the field spells.) Also it wouldn't be an F.A. card by name, we already know how dumb that is Baseline, not to mention the F.A. level boost effect would chain block the field spell search.
The thing is sending a monster from the deck to the graveyard isn't a cost, it's a boost. In all card games losing hand advantage is a cost, the more you have the more you can do, but if something from the deck skips the hand and enters the grave in Yugioh, it usually has an effect in the grave or can be used as fuel for other cards, since the graveyard is a sub-hand in Yugioh. Even banishing a card from the deck, sending it to a non functioning "hand", is still not a cost for most effects as it still does not target hand advantage.
Some cards actually have restrictions too, like Eldritch restricting to Zombie monsters only for a turn to prevent massive graveyard crossover with other decks, but I can still splash that shit in Branded somewhat effectively because nearly every fucking card in the deck starts a generic combo.
Branded itself is basically modern yugioh despite technically being lower tier and behind on power creep, every card is a combo starter that pulls out 3 boss monsters and disruptions and the only way to stop it is to literally pack cards that say "no" to any effect, and the meta can STILL play through these because the sheer amount of action advantage players have is absolutely insane. It's gotten to the point that the dreaded cards Maxx "C" and Ash Blossom are starting to feel WEAK. These are game defining cards too. The power creep is exploding.
As much as I'd love for my pure Gravekeeper's Necrovalley deck that I've been upgrading since I got a Marik structure deck to get that one card that makes it bend every unfair deck over its knee until the end of time, and trust me GKs have some degenerately unfair cards that are only fair because they're either an End Phase search or completely unsearchable, I've long since moved on. At this point I'd rather just have some sort of card that lets me "activate" cards (even just traps and flip monsters would be fine) from the hand by revealing them, so I don't have to set GK's Spy/Guard and get my monster search/bounce blown up, or have my negate sitting useless in hand. It could easily tie in to the Egyptian stone tablet aesthetic from the actual series.

Lunalight Kaleido Chick is Mathmech Circular before it was cool. Except she can't special summon by herself. Even she almost has all type of effects (on field, GY and if banished).
Spriggan Ex-Blower is one of those cards who has unique effect that targets but actually doesn't target. It targets monster zone to destroy the monster instead.

Circular needs banned in md too. I'm so sick of losing to that card after 2 hand traps don't stop it. Heck even 3 isn't enough some games.
Honestly at this point I'm wondering if are they going to flat out restart or make another Duel Links game starting from basic staples and more basic archetypes again. I know rush is a thing but I mean with original Yu-Gi-Ohs rules and gameplay not a spin off. Like what happened with Old School Ruin Scape, WoW Classic where they finally realize there's a massive audience in their fan base who just want to play their game was back then and see just how many hoops they are willing to jump through to do so and decided to finally monetize it and push it to a main stream audience again.
Imo custom cards can be in a game, ad long as they are very locked into a specific mid archeyype, that would become good but not abusable. Mathmech circolar should have had a better lock beside "you can only attack with one with 1 monster". A xeno lock would have made mathmech a good otk machine but not a good combo deck unless they'd decide to print in archetype negate or interruptions. Imo very heavily restrictions on powerful cards should be much more common

U know what if Konami can do dumb effects, then I CAN DO DUMB BROKEN EFFECTS. Custom rank 4 xyz monster with the effects where if ir opponents were to activate spells, trap, field, monster, hand effects you can active the effect of the rank 4 and attach that card to this card as material
U can detach 1 overlay unit so ur opponent can never special summon
Detach 2 overlay unit to banish ur opponents entire hand
Detach 3 overlay unit to banish all extra monster face down also this card is unaffected to spells, trap, field, effects and hand traps
we need ash 2.0 where it negate the effect of the card till next turn so shit cannot activate all of their own effect in succession.

Best custom card ? A card with the effect , if a card would destroy card/s on your side of the field , negate that effect , and destroy cards on your opponents field up to the amount of cards on your side of the field, this effect cannot be negated
they have to make good cards to sell packs, but at the same time they have to make bad filler cards to keep some control over the power creep (you can't avoid it). this is a card game that is played over a turn, there can't be much nuance over the effects, it's good and broken, it's mid and bad or it has to stop your opponent for playing.
The question is why they can't sell fun decks that aren't better than current decks.

Master Duel is also very disappointing. Started so well with affordable cards. Kinda fair.
Now every new playable card is a UR. Whereas before a whole archetype required 1 or 2 URs in total.
Transaction rollback, labyrinth, unchained, tear, ishizu, Kash, rescue ace, diabelstar, bonfire.
Every card, which is good and low rarity gets axed.
Turns take forever.

I wish for Tindangle returner (Fiend, lvl 8, was in the anime) to be an extender, and a link that works like Ghostrick link... but I'm afraid that by trying to push a flip mechanic they mess up once again and turn them into the next Nordic incident (Nordic's skill drain is more consistent than Shira-kashi trap which isn't even searchable) by ignoring how my boys are a combo deck in disguise, or worst: Make them splashable into yet another Barone & friends turbo (Aka the Wakaushi incident)

Sucks as a mathmech petdecker we got the pitchforks raised towards circ just cause 1 youtuber made it his personality, all the arguements against it just for right after the banlist for snake eyes to have all of those qualities but even to a greater extent
"Custom" is a cruddy buzzword.
Though the point still stands that every good card these days has at least one of the following:
1. Usable mutiple times/ways during a turn. A non-HOPT Spell is arguably less busted than a Monster that can use 2-3 of its effects in the same turn because of how much easier it is to reuse monsters throughout a turn with geeneric engines. Stop crying about consistency cards that don't do anything without such busted targets for them.
2. Modular but POWERFUL effects. TTT is powerful because of its versatility, the only reason Change of Heart hasn't eclipsed it entirely when back to multiple copies depspite being Non-HOPT(and being able to Target in order to get an Underworld Goddess out of the way) is because the hand rip and SOMETIMES the draw 2(if Ash Blossom hasn't already been used) can come up if you're at war with hand trap nonsense(which is almost all people do nowadays, so the trigger requirement is usually not an issue, and typically never is when going second).
3. Limited effects with powerful synergies. The reason Circular and Laplacian are busted are because of their interactions with Sigma and Diameter respectively. The reason Snake-Eye Ash is even capable of making combos on its own is thanks entirely to Poplar being able to Special Summon itself when added to hand(and in some cases being usable as a discard outlet thanks to its float effect putting it back on the field). Sky Striker Mobilize Engage and Mecha Modules Hornet Drones wouldn't be anywhere near as powerful without the ability to pick up one or the other with Kagari in order to actually have a way to take advantage of being usable again in the same turn to make a consistent engine out of. Almost every deck is a "combo" deck of sorts these days thanks to all the little interactions you can jump between to set up or force out multiple disruptions in a turn.
Suddenly "business card" starters I wrote up aren't irrational anymore.
Example:
"If your Deck has 4 "Djinn" monsters with different names, you start the Duel with this card in your Hand (you draw 1 less card at the start of the Duel)."
My favorite card is Maxx C. Its effect states, "if this card is in your hand, during your opponent's turn, discard this card. If it isn't negated, you win the duel." That's as pretty good effect!
