Steve Austin and Chris Jericho kicked the Forbidden Door open on the Broken Skull Sessions, and continue the conversation here with a detailed look at Stone Cold’s career! They break down a bunch of his memorable matches including some with Ricky Steamboat, Ravishing Rick Rude, Barry Windham, and Chris Benoit. Steve speaks extensively about his former tag team partner Brian Pillman and their run as the Hollywood Blonds, and his feud with Mr. McMahon and what Vince was really like in the ring. He also recalls Wrestlemania 13 and the double turn with Bret Hart, and his three Wrestlemania main event matches with The Rock.

I don’t think you’ll ever find a Bret Hart match that someone would call “god awful”. Even against Kane (Issac Yakem) the matches were solid. Story was stupid, but Bret in the ring is as solid as it gets. He’s my GOAT

Bret/Austin was an amazing feud. The thing that solidified Stone Cold as a major player. Even though it was a year and a half between SS 96 and when Austin won the belt at Mania14, it was clear he was going to be a (even THE) top guy in the company. Plus, that Mania13 double turn was perfectly done. Austin went on to become the top face and Bret did some of his best mic work as a heel through 97. If Montreal hadn't happened and Bret stayed, I'm sure he would have gladly done the job and passed the torch to Steve at WM14

I had no idea Austin called most of the match...I always assumed it was Bret due to his tenure. That's a fascinating wrinkle, and shows how much Bret trusted and respected Austin as a ring performer. Every match and encounter they ever had was a joy to watch.

Austin vs Hitman at WM13 is, in my opinion, the greatest non Flair-Steamboat match in history.

I heard the Rock talk about how good Stone Cold treated him when putting him over and I instantly thought "Bret did that for Steve and Steve is paying it forward to Rocky" 🙏

Not a lot of people realize also that Bret Hart helped spring board the Rock as well. I remember shortly before Survivor Series in Montreal Bret Hart had a match with The Rock (before the rock was born as a character) and I think it really helped him. After that, he started having bigger matches and went his own way instead of just being a background member of the Nation of Domination.

Bret was spot on about getting color in the WM13 match, no doubt about it. Austin bleeding as much as he did really enhanced the finish, the double turn, everything.

Just one of the many hundred's of stories about Bret being told by the guys he worked with just how great he was. That match with Austin which is widely recognized as possibly the greatest match of all time by countless wrestler's passed and present. Bret used the idea of Steve getting color just as Piper did for the Bret/Piper match where Bret get's busted open. Just that thought process to understand how a "little spot like getting gigged" can affect the match and the fans reaction is what wrestling is about!! It's not about going Wooooo, or holding your hand behind your ear and taking your vitamins, or taking a slug of water and spitting it out trying to look all tough, etc.

Austin and Bret put on Masterclass matches. Top 3 rivalry in WWE and Austin went over crazy without actually winning. Some of the best storytelling in wrestling history.

The passing out with blood (color) was what sealed that match to be so memorable. Bret suggesting it brought more credibility to the passing out angle. And that image made Austin into a real bad ass. A turning point no doubt. Austin got even more Over and Brett turned heel and man Bret is so convincing as a Heel. Bret had a cool type character but became really hated afterwards. Too bad they didn't wrestle a lot more. Instant classics. Two of my favorites and most respected Pro wrestlers.
