    To those of you complaining about the recline being too loose, you can adjust the tension of the pivot/recline function. There is a hex adjustment underneath the seat centre rear of the main support. It's very stiff but does turn with a bit of force: adjusting this makes a huge difference. I'm not sure why this is not mentioned in the videos or in the manual?

    I’ve had this chair for two years now - got it as it became clear working from home was going to last for a while because of the pandemic, and it became quickly clear it was going to be a lot cheaper in the long run to pay for a good chair rather than struggle with cheap ones and the back problems I’d end up developing. We’ve had some Herman Miller chairs in the office, but I never really got to terms with them and spent a fair bit of time looking for alternatives when looking for something to get for home use. Most shops being closed because of lockdowns obviously meant I couldn’t actually go try any out in person either.
    This video along with a few others helped me make my mind and I got the Humanscale Freedom with headrest and fabric trim. It’s been hands down the most comfortable chair I have ever used, it fits my back and body form perfectly and the reclining function is so seamless and functional that I don’t even think about it when using it. Not having tons of adjustment levers to fiddle with was one of the attractions of the chair, and it has worked very well. I sit in it for quite long hours, and it has been far better for my back than the chairs we use in the office.
    The only thing I think could be better designed is the armrests. It looks aesthetically pleasing, but the mechanism is not as solid as the rest of the chair - it’s the one thing on it that feels a bit flimsy.

      @@Omagarten Works great for me at my height so not sure how tall the person is they are referring to in the video but for it not to work they would have to be over 6'5 I think. As for the chair in general, I think it's great. The design is simple but effective. It's my first chair with a headrest and I have watched whole movies in it fully reclined and I think the support is really nice. You need to adjust it a bit when you get it but once you find the sweet spot for your back it feels like it hugs you and provides nice support for your back and neck.

    This chair used to have a lifetime warranty before they cut it to 12 years sometime ago. It applies to both factory or man made defects.
    So everything are replaceable even worn out / torn leather or fabrics for that matter.
    The arms are the only real problem as the plastic base for the pad will crack/break if hard enough pressure is applied.
    The gel padding is slso thinner now.
    Overall its a top 5 office chair for me ✌

      @chasenthehype 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my biggest issue - the armrests :( Such an odd flaw, once that gear goes out those arms are useless (and expensive to repair). Found a size C Aeron and absolutely love it as a replacement. I've also heard that Humanscale has 'cheaped out' on recent iterations of it as well which is sad.

      John Zabroski Mostly just from acquaintances who have owned newer models and the older early models. Also, Reddit hah - take that as you will. Herman Miller is also ‘cheaping out’ a bit by starting to use more plastics in their updates Aeron chairs - so time will tell if that becomes an issue.

    Have the Humanscale Freedom with the headrest an love it -and I'm not quite 2 meters tall. Reclining in it is a dream and I can sit in it cross-legged, as I often like to do. People mention the arm rests as being a weak spot - I was making the mistake of using the armrest to get up out of the chair and one of them broke. The amazing thing is Humanscale paid to have it replaced, even though I'd owned the chair for years. Gotta love a company like that.
    My only issue with it now is that it creaks and squeeks like crazy.

    Wait, so there's no way to disengage that pully system which cranks your head forward as you tilt back in the chair???
    You can never recline without your chin being shoved into your chest?
    That's a pretty weird design decision.

  • @affirmed_7835
    @affirmed_7835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This chair didn't work for me. I have a slimmer frame so the arms being farther apart and unable to adjust was an issue. The seat bottom was also a little too firm for my liking. But the big problem for me was the backrest. I don't do well with pronounced lumbar support and this chair felt like it was digging into my back, amplifying my back issues. I've been using the Haworth Zody which has allowed me to work virtually pain free. I returned my Freedom Headrest after trying it for a month, and Humanscale was actually very helpful and allowed me to return it for a full refund.

      they do need to make a xl size. This chair can adjust but it isn't that much. This fits like a glove as you recline, unbelievable compared to Steelcase and Herman Miller. I would call Humanscale and pester them on a larger chair like how Aeron chair has 3 different sizes). You are missing out. I am not that tall, so it fits amazing. This is the best natural recliner, I just recline the back support is still there and the headrest moves closer not do nothing like other chairs. There is no locking mechanism, it just does it naturally. I adjust the height of the chair and the back support and that is it. Ok got the adjustable arms (upgrade package) if I want to move it out of the way. I got mine at the relax the back store. They don't carry HM or Steelcase, since they don't naturally adjusting with you adjusting all the time.

    Had an older model Freedom w/ headrest - and loved it. It's a brilliant ergo chair through and through. That said, the armrests were the biggest failing point. The gear itself - while a great feature - is not easily repairable (or user-repairable). They grind down, and the arms become completely useless (and floppy to the lowest setting). I had to give mine up - and switched to an Aeron.

      I'm 5'8", 160 pounds and you're right about the standard arms being too wide for working with a keyboard and mouse. But that's a non-issue for me. I move the arms down and out of the way because I have a pair of Ergorest articulating arm rests attached to my desk. They're far superior to any chair arms. Since they articulate, they offer continuous back support as I shift back and forth between keyboard and mouse.

    the best chair out there and I have tried Steelcase and Herman Miller. It is all just personal taste. This the best reclining office chair. No there is no real adjustment it just reclines and the headrest follows with it. No locking mechanism like other chairs has. Why when it is perfectly balanced. I can sit Indian style too. Great chair if you like to recline and have the cruiser sit and with back support. The few issues are prices, add the adjustable arm is like 200-300, then add aluminum is another 200 (otherwise it is mostly plastic) While the back and headrest adjust it is only a few inches. If you are tall I don't see how it will fit you like a glove compared to the average person height. I just got this chair after a year when I first randomly sat in it (I live in a big city so I can try the chair out, recommend people do that) of waiting and trying a lot of different chairs.

      @@AyoMrB With our reviews, we cover the things we like and don't like about the chair. Unfortunately, we don't go over all of the adjustments. Our in depth written review talks more about this feature and is linked above in the description. In that written review we have created some Gifs that show the height adjustment function. Around the 2:00 mark of this video I show myself reclining in this video and the headrest is at the tallest position. That might provide some additional context to how it will fit users my height and above.
      We also create adjustment videos for most of the chairs we review, here is a link to that video for the Freedom Chair: bit.ly/2MWKBSU. - GK

    Make sure you stay away from this chair. It is the worst acquisition I've ever made so far. The lack of a locking system means that your back will never sit comfortable in a 90 degree position. You always have to force yourself to stay at a 90 degrees, otherwise the moment you relax the chair relax as well and you end up in a very uncomfortable angle. Who the hell does not put a locking mechanism in a $1500 chair? Seriously now? How my back is going to ever get proper support with all that recline going on? I'm struggling for 3 days to get used to it, but I just can't. I'm a programmer and I type a lot and this chair put me in a very uncomfortable position for typing the moment I relax. I wanted to invest my money into an ergonomic chair since I spend most of the time sitting at the desk. This was the worst decision I could have possible made.
    If you want a locking system on your chair, just stay away from this.

      It's probably worth having an ergonomics consultation. The worst possible position for you to sit is at 90 degrees - all the weight from your upper body causes strain on your pelvic bone, and just like a hosepipe, any 90 degree kinks in the body cause restricted blood flow. Having a chair that encourages you to open up the body, whilst still providing lumbar support in the right place, will have immediate and long-term benefits. And having a backrest lock discourages movement - the single biggest problem when sitting for any length of time.

      @12345bookworm12345 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Meecham my question to you is what happens to your neck in that position? Because the chair pulls you behind so your neck struggle to stay right and look forwards.
      When your back is pulled behind like that by the dynamic support, you need to have your monitors somewhere on your wall or ceiling in order to sit comfortable with the neck lol.

    • @12345bookworm12345
      @12345bookworm12345 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that is more of a problem to models such as the Liberty one which hurts your neck so badly.

      I think the lack locking mechanism will have mixed opinions. Like any chair in this price bracket, you should ideally try it before you buy it. If that isn't possible then buy it from somewhere with a good returns policy so you can get a refund if you can't get used to it.
      The chair is definitely comfortable if you get used to it and I'm not sure I'd ever want a chait that doesn't have this auto-adjusting headrest. I'm 6'5 and it fits me fine. I bought mine second hand and I've had it 10 years now so it's looking a bit tired but I'm considering buying another.

      @@12345bookworm12345 I will reiterate my suggestion that you should consider an ergonomics consultation. Without being there to see exactly why the dynamic headrest isn't working for you, it's difficult for me to evaluate your concerns. If a consultation is not feasible, how about asking someone from the shop / dealership where you purchased the chair to give you a demo?

  • @dansmith6909

    DO NOT BUY THIS CHAIR ANYMORE. It's lovely when it's new but mine is now approximately two years old and it's falling apart. The rubberised material on the armrests popped out of its retaining groove within a few months of having it. The gas spring/rotating bearing in the base now makes the creaky cracking noise that all crap office chairs make when they're broken. The headrest doesn't stay in place because of Humanscale's cheap, crap design. The armrests sag. The pull around handle on the back mysteriously snapped off one day. I think i've used it twice to pull the chair about on carpet. Maybe the quality was different years ago, but they're absolute rubbish now. My chinese "gaming chair" lasted longer.

    This is the worst office chair I have ever be forced to sit on. When you pull it back, it wants to break your neck. It has some weird non-metric regulation (allen?) key instead of useful knob. I had to dismantle some of its mechanisms to make it acceptable, but then the bolster pops out. And there is no locking mechanism!
    For the amount of money, anything other is a way better choice.

    • @btodtv
      @btodtv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The headrest is not for everyone. I like it closer to the 75% reclined position, since the headrest is in a more neutral position around that reclined position for my body. They did this purposely though, to properly position your eyes on your monitors when fully reclined. -GK

    • @michaczapski5291
      @michaczapski5291 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@btodtv I would not say the headrest is not for everyone. The whole chair is not for everyone. I would not recommend it to anyone in fact. Orthopedists prescibe immediate chair change when people from the office complain to spine pain. And for the money and high chance it won't fit - there are less risky and cheaper choices.

      Are you looking for a headrest that lets you stare up at the ceiling when you recline? This is the only chair I've seen that actually supports your head in the right position when you're reclined so you can actually work and look at your screen.

  • @tzav

    this is a bad chair. no locking mechanism means you need to constantly support the chair to be reclined. also when you recline the headrest goes forward and push you head to an awkward position like you can see in the video. also, the back support is very bad because the back support pivots by a few degrees.
    I don't understand why they sell it at such a high price.
