      @@tomdavisofficial Do you believe that people should mainly use prong collars on dogs instead of harnesses when we get a dog? Every time I try to get my chiweenie and bulldog to come to me by popping them with the leash when they spot a distraction there’s little effect and leads to me having to basically yank them away from the distraction as I walk the other direction or walk further ahead.

      @@laurynrogers9763 I'm not him, but harnesses are useless because you cannot give a correction. So you cannot communicate to your dog. If your dog responds to a "pop" on a flat collar, then that is enough to communicate with him, if he doesn't perhaps try a Gentle Leader and if that doesn't work he might need a prong (if he is a big or powerful dog).
      My 80 lb Shepherd needs a prong...
      Tom has a video th-cam.com/video/XmYOYA7PKLw/w-d-xo.html where he removes a harness from a Shepherd and says that they are useless because they make the dog pull.

      @@laurynrogers9763 prong collars are extremely harmful in the wrong hands. It's especially harmful for smaller dogs, their trachea can collapse, suffocate, and die. I believe getting a vibrating collar like he has shown, and consistently training to show that is not an acceptable behavior will change this and not hurt your dog.

    Mother in law was walking our dog yesterday and had to correct with a "leave it" and popped the prong..a lady playing frisbee with her dog in the distance yelled "that won't do anything !!" 🤦 It's frustrating when training your dog and correcting, and then having commentary from people who don't know what they're talking about. The thing is people get scared when they see another dog that’s the problem it’s not the dog it’s the owners who feel or get scared. I used to be like this. Tom if you read this can you do a video on this topic how to be calm when walking your dog with other dogs around etc?

    • @Razzberry4444
      @Razzberry4444 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I was scared and unsure what to do when I saw another dog coming, I turned and fled the scene. After I learned how to use prong collar (thanks to Tom), I took a step at a time. When I knew I can ask my pup to heel and leave it, when I saw a dog passed by across the street, heel and leave it, kept going. One success led to another attempt. The more success I have, the confidence build up. I learned from the experience and knew what type of dogs will trigger my pup to react. It is all learning experience for me. If I didn’t do well this time, I tell myself that’s ok too, I am learning and so is my dog. We both will get better together someday, as long as we never stop learning. My base line of confidence comes from I knew the prong collar is able to help me move on with my pup, that’s the confidence I have to keep me trying and learning. I don’t have to activate the pop often now, but the prong collar has saved me a few unexpected times. I have used prong collar for about 4 months now, and it really helped us and our dog.

    I have a 3 legged GSD, she will be 2 in Jan. We got her at 2 months and to us she's full of love and a joy. Unfortunately she had an accident that ended in a back leg amputation around 6-7 months and we had to leave her at the vet for maybe 2 weeks for after care.. and ever since she's come home she has seemingly been aggressive towards other dogs.
    Prior to her amputation/accident she would go to doggy daycare a couple times a week and she was fine. Always initially skiddish but would always be fine and even play. I would even be able to let her off leash around another dog in the mountains..... Now we have a hard time even taking her to a park because she will bark and lunge toward other dogs (not people) , and we're feeling stuck. She comes across aggressive and scares others which is the biggest issue (because she's truly lovely, obedient to us, follows commands).

    Is there a way to implement this type of corrective training, without that kind of collar? It is not legal here in Victoria, Australia, to use that kind of collar.
    My dog is very reactive on the leash, he just wants to get close to the other dog to sniff them but he has no idea how to do it properly.

      @@nataliafuller8308 thanks!
      My mistake, it is illegal to import into Australia but not illegal to use. But RSPCA opposes the use of it as untrained people can hurt their dogs using it.

    My dog have definitely lack of engagement. He isn't luckily agressive towards others dogs but he wants play with all of them and I can't have him off leash that he will run into some another dog mouth. I will do prong and remote collar training now, because his bad engagement is due to poor socialisation. He was abused. But during 8 months I took him at least into state that he is confident and no fearful more. Thank you for video! It's helpful!❤

    Great information that will be helpful. I’m interested in how you would handle the situation, if after smelling the dog became aggressive? Barking and biting? Thank you!

    My dog shows that same “aggressive” front but actually it’s just the frustration. Can you talk about that more and give more tips for that in social situations, like when he behaves that way towards people??

    Do you have a video on how to work through the frustration of meeting the other dog? My dog is the same way and I would love to have him meet dogs on leash in a calm way.

    Gracie Mae is protective of me in public and at home. When I have had a seizure, she sits down right next to me and licks my hand. If people approach she may or may not verbalize, depending upon how they do so. She is definitely right on target. She knows when I am okay vs. when I am not okay. When I am safe vs. when I am unsafe. I never trained her to do this. It was purely natural.

    love the training you doo. the only thing i have an issue with is the prong in my contry that is illigal too use because of the nails ho diggs in too the dogs skin and hurt them but other than that great work

    You're the best! Quick question: I have a small dog that I rescued and he is semi leash reactive. In the past I have "snapped" corrected my dogs but with this guy (10lbs), he has a spine/neck issue so I could never "snap" the leash for correction.
    What would be the next best training tool for him?

    Yooooo, been following you for a while now. I really like the channel. ESPECIALLY this video. This is something that I see all the time and it bothers me probably just as much as it bothers you. My family makes this mistake. They have two puppies now that when Im around or when im in control of the leash we have no problems but as soon as they "take control" the dog gets extremely wired up and unresponsive to commands. I might have to show them this video honestly ha thanks again keep up the work

    The dog started looking at him more when he was showing her how to walk with the leash. And once the owner started getting the hang of it, the dog started looking at her more also! 👍👍👍

    Thank you so much Tom!!
    Any chance you'd do a video on the subtleties of corrections- for ex, how much more strongly you correct if the dog is reacting at a dog/person outside vs. if they don't follow a heel command indoors? We had a trainer tell us that unless the correction was quite intense, the dog would eventually stop caring about it and the prong would lose its power as a tool.. What do you think?

    Our golden gets frustrated and exhibits the same kind of behavior. I would like to see a video that zeroes in on that part of things. This just skipped over it but it’s exactly the topic I want to learn more about. Great video, anyway!

    • @animallover372
      @animallover372 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video hands you most of what you need for frustration based behavior. The leadership skills, and bringing the dog's attention back to you are the main skills you need. The biggest thing: a short lead. it takes the dog 2-3 seconds to go from seeing the other dog to reacting to the other dog. You need to be able to react first. A leash of a foot or less gives you the reaction time you need to say "hey! smarten up" or "come, turn around" I speak from the experience of training a dog who used to have a complete meltdown upon seeing other dogs on leash. I used a simple Martingale, which follows the same correctional concept as the prong, but is safer for a dog prone to panic
