The Cutest Coyote

  • DISCLAIMER: COYOTES ARE NOT PETS!!!!!
    While I discourage wolfdog ownership in the majority of cases, I STRONGLY discourage coyote ownership in all cases. The handful of successful coyote or coydog owners I know have all dedicated their entire lives to caring for their animals and have decades of experience working with canids. They are the exceedingly rare exception, not the rule.
    Having said that, coyotes tend to get a bad rap, and it is about time for coyotes to have an image makeover. So I thought I'd share a video of Phoenix, our coyote, to help show the lighter, more lovable side of coyotes than what we're used to seeing. Coyotes are seen as pests by a lot of people because they live in closer proximity to humans than other predators. Consequently, in an effort to survive, they will occasionally kill pets and often come into closer contact with humans than what we're comfortable with. However, the actuality of coyotes is that they are exceedingly intelligent predators who are doing their best to survive in a continually shrinking environment. Their ability to adapt and thrive in urban areas is a testament to their tenacity and innovation, and we need to take a second to realize that we are taking away their land and giving them nowhere to go. Coyotes are predators and will do what they need to in order to survive. Should they happen upon a beloved family pet, they will see a meal; not out of malice, but out of necessity. As pet owners it is our responsibility to keep our animals safe and to realize that the world is made up of more than humans and domesticated animals. Coyotes are not to be blamed for pet deaths, they are only trying to live. We have respect and reverence for other predators, and its about time we extend those emotions to coyotes.
    This video features Phoenix, the coyote, and Tanook, a Native American Indian Dog. They are our original odd couple, and are entirely in love with each other despite the enormous size difference. Phoenix was
    rescued from a home in which she lived her entire life in a kennel in a bathtub. When she was removed, a HAZMAT team had to be called due to the atrocious conditions in which she was living. As a result of her
    rough start, she has a couple strange behavioral ticks that you can see throughout the video. She loves to be pet by those she trusts (specifically butt scratches) but will get uncomfortable and snap with little to warning. She will also rub up on me, put her paw on my arm, and sit in my lap to get me to pet her, but will be displaying teeth and making her silly coy noises throughout. Her behavior is likely due to the entirely conflicted instincts within her. Her brain says she is wild, she was raised by humans, but she was also neglected by humans. The fact that she is willing to have contact at all is a minor miracle and I am grateful every day to have earned her trust and the ability to join in her silly times.

      Seriously! I was kind of thinking the same thing. Don't know about coyotes, but hyenas have been known to walk right into the tents of people on safaris, and actually try to eat them alive! So then you wake up to discover that a hyena is chowing down on your fat, delicious thighs! I love dogs, I really do, but sometimes I gotta wonder about these people who have pet wolves, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, etc, etc. I think they might be a couple fries short of a happy meal! Even regular dogs, especially the really big ones, can be kind of scary and dangerous, but wild animals in my bedroom and living room? Not a risk I want to take. Also must be extremely expensive to keep them and to feed them. And where are you gonna find a veterinarian who is willing to vaccinate them and treat them in the event they get sick? I personally know a lot of vets will just say, "I don't treat exotic animals. Please get out of my office NOW!" So that's another problem to consider if you want a pet like that. You gotta find the right vet, the right trainer, the right everything, and the cost is going to really add up after a while.

      a coyote is not going to attack something bigger than it unless it is starving or threatened and backed into a corner. even if you're sleeping, a fed coyote is a safe coyote.
      I've had wild coyotes (probably mixed with dogs) in my neighborhood come up behind me and pass me by. They hunt small prey animals and they know any adult human could easily crush their bones.
      That wolf on the other hand could kill a human in an instant.

    It's interesting, I always thought it was strange that coyotes have been said to live in urban areas, until one day I'd seen about five or six coyotes at once by the riverbed near the highway in Long Beach, California sometime in 2010. I'd also seen a couple of them down the hill from where I was in Lake Tahoe one year, and we made eye contact from far off, and I just waved at them as they walked away into the woods. I'm still captivated by both experiences.

    I live on the northeast side of Atlanta and there is a creek and some woods right beyond my backyard. It's not unusual to see coyotes near the creek and running around after dark, especially where I feed some feral cats. When they see you they always run away and it almost looks as though they are gliding when seen from a distance at dusk. Beautiful animals.

    does she want to play fight with you or play tug of war with you? I don't know anything about coyotes but she seems almost playful in a weird way. btw I love watching your videos and you're amazing with the animals. every single one of them seem to be quite happy and they certainly have some good enclosures (I hate seeing animals trapped in a tiny, unsuitable cage with concrete floors)

    • @SarahandtheWolves
      @SarahandtheWolves  7 ปีที่แล้ว +104

      +anse001 Great question! She's being playful! Coyotes are very different from wolfdogs and a lot of wolves. They're much less comfortable receiving affection and tend to be little bitey things when they're done with being pet. In this video she wants to be pet, not be pet, play tug of war, and play with my sleeve almost all at once lol. Their moods shift rapidly but there's no aggression in this video, just play and the occasional "OK stop petting me right this second". And thanks so much! It is really sad to see animals in tiny areas and we were very lucky to have the space to let them live a life suited to their needs.

      @@SarahandtheWolves I lived in southern California for thirty years. I lived in Cajon Pass. There was a pair of C oyotes that raised a litter in a den right across the road from me, for at least five years. One of the funniest things I've ever heard is coyote pups learning to howl.
      I now live in Washington State. I moved here in 2016. I hear coyotes around the property all the time (outside Goldendale), but I've only ever seen one. And I shot that one. The poor thing was so sick, when I initially spotted him leaning against a scrub oak, he didn't react to my presence at all. He was shivering, and had lots of missing fur. He was also badly gummed up around his eyes, and stank like something dead. I went into the house, retrieved my .45 caliber pistol, and ended his suffering. When I buried him I wore two pairs of nitrile gloves and threw them into the hole. I hated doing that, but I have a golden retriever, and didn't want her getting sick.
      Any idea what might have been afflicting the poor guy?

    • @SarahandtheWolves
      @SarahandtheWolves  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@megamonkeyblaster3627 It certainly sounds like you did it a kindness. I'd guess it had mange, which can often be deadly for coyotes. It's treatable but obviously wild guys can't always be caught to treat. You did the right thing in protecting your dog. If you ever see a coyote in that condition again you may want to try calling a local wildlife rehabilitation center, I've seen some really miraculous mange recoveries. But I certainly don't blame you for helping to end it's suffering.

    Absolutely beautiful creatures. I'm so glad you're spreading the truth on these beauties. While many find the. scary and horrible, We as humans took away everything they had. Our cities and homes got in the way of their natural habitats, no wonder they wander in our cities and eat our pets! They are trying to survive with the scarce space and food that they have, and out of instinct, if they see an animal, they are going to try to eat it, especially if it is starved. They really are beautiful, though. Makes me wonder why everyone loved dogs and stuff, especially huskies, which are close to wolves, but think wolves and coyotes are vicious and disgusting creatures, when really they aren't?

      Where I live coyotes are a constant threat to anyone walking alone at night, sometimes during the day too, and I live in a city in southern Ontario, Canada! In some areas they're too wild and desperate, and notoriously aggressive as they start breeding with wild dogs. Unfortunately they're becoming a real threat in my area, despite efforts made to capture and release them away from towns. Any bad rep they have is the same for all wild dogs, no one wants a dangerous uncontrolled animal in their community.

    Really quite interesting behavior...vocalizations are akin to a fox...

    Sort of like a more aggressive Redfox but a bit larger which is rough considering Reds can be a real pain at their size heehee. Worth it if you are willing to dedicate to them but still little fluffy terrors.
