So I'm at a thai restaurant in hollywood earlier tonight and a few minutes after we get seated they seat a couple of guys next to us... one of them just happens to be Julian Casablancas. I didn't want to be rude in the middle of his meal but when they were already done & paying and right before we left I got to tell him that I was at the 2 dollar bill concert and how I feel it was their signature performance & how I love his work. He smiled & said thanks, as I walked by their table he stood up to shake my hand and even gave me a bro hug. Cool dude.
This made me smile. You're right about what you said. When I think of any live performance my mind automatically comes to this. Roman Coppola did a great job.
Yeah, I want to see them live like soooo bad even though they don't have the same energy like this anymore, I'm waiting till I get my own money because I want to be up in the front at one if there concerts..... One day 😂
The Strokes is one of those bands that have always evoked an inexplicable feeling in me, like nostalgia and hope at the same time. Julian has this somewhat apathetic way of singing; his voice navigates between anguish, anger, fun and calm. The band has a punk vibe, but with upbeat and catchy harmonies/melodies, which make them easy-listening, and at the same time endow them with a share of melancholy. Well, this song was the band's first single, and more than 20 years later I still find it a gem.
Although I love that Jules could actually lay down on the stage..and still sing and be amazing..I'm glad he got sober..he said he used to be in pain unless he drank..and after he finally quit, he felt hungover everyday - for two years..it makes me sad that such a cool guy had to struggle so hard..glad he beat it!
In some ways, I miss the guys like this, all in a drunken stupor and the amazing vocal sound because of the mic. Just perfection. But of course, Julian and Fab being sober is for the best. I still have so much respect for these guys. Their music is beyond words.
It’s crazy to watch this in the context of the times. Imagine it’s 2000 or 2001 and “rock” music is basically just limp Bizkit and creed. Grunge is long gone and all that’s left on the radio is nu metal and corny pop punk. Then all of a sudden u get these 5 kids from NYC who don’t give a fuck and before u know it, The Strokes are here, and rock music is back in full swing. No theatrics, no special effects; just five hard-partying dudes in their early 20s making raw, dirty music. And look at what happens next. Today, “indie” music is super mainstream. But when these guys first came out, it wasn’t thT way-bc they were literally the first. Ask any other band that big today: Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Tame Impala, The Growlers, The Grinns, etc. they’re all gonna say that they wouldn’t exist without The Strokes paving the way. The Strokes are The Beatles of the 21st century and I’m not even just saying that.
I would call coldplay the new Beatles tbh, the strokes create amazingly simple riffs that sound amazing but Coldplay’s creative tunes compares to the Beatles. People agree that they are the modern day Beatles, the strokes are completely in their own category. But I see why you say they are like the Beatles as well because they also paved a path just like they did
:D it was grand time! garage rock revival: libertines, strokes, white stripes yeeeehaaw backstreet boys died a slow painful death, britney was stripping off more and more. dont worry mate rock will be back soon. gene simmons had a point about rock being dead but it dies all the time and just reincarnates over and over again and often without warning
The feeling i get when i listen to that song's chorus. Nostalgy for things i have not ever lived... A burning will to go back in time, and start my 20's in new york city around 2001. I love the strokes, my heart aches when i listen to them. I don't know how this is happening, they are just one of the most meaningful things in my life right now
loved how Fab banged his drums in the end and one of his drumsticks gets flown into the audience at 3:41. Every time I watch that part, it just makes me wanna shout "YEAH!" because totally it rocks just like The Strokes!
??? WHY ??? This is their best concert ever imo, the best stage setup, the best performance, the best songs from their best album. They needa release this on DVD or better yet Blu ray 1080p with 7.1 surround sound, i would buy that in a heartbeat.
The Strokes are one of the main bands that just gave us that inexplicable rush that made us want to start playing music. They motivated and inspired us to start our own band and write our own music. We recently released two singles from our album that's coming out in about a week. You guys should come check them out. You won't regret it.
this perfomance is way better than the album version. Its slower (as it should), julians vocals are perfect, and the perfomance itself is very good and charming
My cousin & I camped out one night at the old Hollywood Virgin Megastore on Sunset Blvd on a rainy chilly night in January just to get a hold of these tickets. Totally worth it! We sat about 15ft away from the stage. The band rehearsed many songs in front of us before the final recording. This was 11 yrs ago today and it's still the best show I've ever been to! It's their "golden age" signature concert! Oh... and the tickets were $2

Listen... I'm in tears now a bit... at some point 10 years ago, I randomly switched channels, looking for something decent to watch - but television was mercyless. I thought, "I'm gonna see what's on music channels, and if there's gonna be shit, I'll go and die of boredom". MTV? Nah. Next channel - nothing. Next - meh... Next - wwit... what's this? Who're these guys? Awesome looks, awesome sound, dim lights and singer's long look... It was this concert. I sold my soul to them right there.
This song, i crossed on a free Mojo 45 stunned me- wid da realization that, holy shit the kidz can play and say something as hot damn as the Saints, Ramones, Joy Div, even 20- years late. ❤

you lucky guy!
Met him in DC in October, awesome guy, even with fame he's still such a down to earth cool dude and easy to talk to.
This made me smile. You're right about what you said. When I think of any live performance my mind automatically comes to this. Roman Coppola did a great job.
omg
onevato OMG! What I would give to have been in your shoes!
And the war between Julian Casablancas and the mic stand continues.
Truly never ending
Screw the mic stand
Lol
I’m so pissed I missed this. Granted I was 1 year old at the time but still
Same dude, same.
I was 3 feel the same

Going to a Strokes concert is a dangerous experience. You gotta look out for flying drumsticks and falling mic stands
So orginal!. Thats why I like the strokes they dont give a fuck for the audience
The drummer is a freaking machine

This song is so damn good every time I hear it, the debut album and this concert is such a golden moment in time
My favorite strokes song of all time, love the lyrics on the chorus.
This performance is mesmerizing! Absolute genius!

I love this video, best part is 2:32 when Julian just stares and looks totally gone.
yo fab's a fucking machine on this
He is. Like an angry metronome.
this song is art...
zer0 95 exactly ..
All songs are
This is the definition of inspired
Timeless..
Probably the best band I've ever seen live!!
that little stick trick that the drummer did at the end was great..
Sean Cothrine lol not noticed that. thanks for comment.
I don't believe this music is 20 years old, It's already a classic, but seems so modern!
This album influenced so many other bands at that time
In some ways, I miss the guys like this, all in a drunken stupor and the amazing vocal sound because of the mic. Just perfection.
But of course, Julian and Fab being sober is for the best. I still have so much respect for these guys. Their music is beyond words.
simply one of the best performances i've seen... easily
How to make a rock song: two notes and look cool as fuck. Oh and add in one of the best guitar solos of all time. Your welcome
Such a tasteful solo.
he is so sloshed yet,his vocal performance is still on point.
This is just phenomenally good. An amazing, raw band at the height of their powers. So damn cool as well.
I can never get enough of this version of the song! Young Julian sounded breathtaking.
This my shit .. 😢 really been getting me through 2024 tough times

I mean blink was at their peak at 2001
I feel this way too. Personally, they filled the empty Nirvana left in me.
@@dizzy6947 yeah, thats corny pop punk lol, until 2003 album
@@AlexVns-yx7dx imo corny pop punk is like simple plan or avril lavigne
Nick Valensi, pretty much as cool as a person can be with a guitar in his hands...
Why couldn't I have been 21 in 2002?

robert anderson i know right ! );
Robert Anderson-Serio I was 2😂
I'm thinking the same thing, I was 5 then :(
I was fifteen.
this has got to be one of my favorite songs of the strokes!!
1:58 to 2:34 is the highlight of the video and of the album. You know what I mean.
that chorus sounds good at any tempo I love it 😍

man you just exactly described my feelings when I listen to the strokes
This song is magical man.
Everybody in the world knows a dude that looks exactly like Albert Hammond Jr. and it is likely that person is also cool as fuck!

I can't get over how incredible this concert was/is
2:50 that moment when the mic holder nearly hit the audience face
Hey bro wth nice seeing you here
And almost fell on the same girl at 3:33
I was only 9 but I remember this distinctly on MTV. Oh how I miss this era so badly
Nick's solo is divided in three parts, representing the modern age
the playing of the guitars in this song, the perpetual drone between main 2 guitar players - erotic
This quality is ridiculous man. Thanks so much for uploading it!
Fab at the end sums up how awesome this performance this was, and they knew it too. Top 5 best live concerts ever.
catches mic stand 2:48, stage left, like a can of corn
This band brought it everynight, Houston 2006
They were 10 years ahead of their time at least. You could have told me this was live in 2013 and i would have believed you
??? WHY ??? This is their best concert ever imo, the best stage setup, the best performance, the best songs from their best album. They needa release this on DVD or better yet Blu ray 1080p with 7.1 surround sound, i would buy that in a heartbeat.
Best strokes clip ever, forever :)
2 DOLLARS WTF THE STROKES ARE WORTH WAAY MORE THAN THAT. I WOULD PAY MILLIONS TO ATTEND THAT CONCERT
Julian is my spirit animal
Wow this is the first video I've ever seen from the 2$ bill show that doesn't look like it was filmed by a calculator :D

TheAudiots fuck you
Just checked them out, they're actually really good
Life is sad after this...it's so perfect...
God they’re such a fucking great band. Velvet Underground and the Doors, and some punk, some 80’s alternative
Someday, someday I will find the torrent of this entire uncut performance. :P
Did that someday ever come?
The whole concert is on TH-cam
this perfomance is way better than the album version. Its slower (as it should), julians vocals are perfect, and the perfomance itself is very good and charming

This little story a long time ago
Stop to pretend, stop pretending
It seems this game is simply never-ending
Oh, in the sun, sun having fun
It's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now
Let me go, oh, let me g-g-g-g-g-g-go
Leavin' just in time
Stay there for a while
Rolling in the ocean
Trying to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy
Do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different
So I'll pretend I'm leaving
Our fears are different here
We train in A-V-A
I wish you hadn't stayed
My vision's clearer now, but I'm unafraid
Flying overseas, no time to feel the breeze
I took too many varieties
Oh, in the sun, sun having fun
It's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now
Let me go
Darling let me g-g-g-g-g-g-go
Leaving just in time
Staying for a while
Rolling in the ocean
Trying to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy
Do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different
So this is why I'm leaving

I think I watch this at least once a day.. fuckin brilliant
I wasn't even born at that time. But these guys are awesome. Why doesn't rock come back?
I wonder if Loe Reed ever listened to them, or if he ever commented.
