    My dad had just got off of this ship 1 month before this happened and he knew some of the men lost in this tragedy. When he told me about this and it was the first time I have even seen my dad tear up before. Rip to those who were lost on that day.

      Stark relieved the USS California CGN36. We went through the challenge almost every night and there was a Mk48 on the rail every time. There was no air support because Our Battle Group was allowed to leave before being properly relieved. We headed through the Suez and couldn't turn around.

    I served on board the USS Underwood FFG-36.
    I had a friend who was on the USS Stark when she was hit. My friend GSM2 Mike Deaner transferred to the USS Underwood from the USS Stark after she was back for repair in dry dock.
    Mike went back over to the Persian Gulf again with myself and the rest of the crew this time on the USS
    Underwood March 1989 MEF 2-89, less than two years after that terrible day. We made it back home and I even more so had a deeper love for our Country and even more deeper respect for the fallen brothers of arms in our country's history.
    Mike was a brave young man and talked about the incident on the Stark in horrible detail.

    It's interesting to see how the story has changed. When it was first reported the attack was carried out by Libyan Patrol boats but since Libya's fall and the fact they are no longer of interest to the Americans the story morphed into an attack by the Iraqis who we are interested in. I had friends on the Stark and heard first hand the events, but they are no longer allowed to talk about it. Oh well. The history rewriters strike again. This post too will soon disappear. TTFN

      They can talk about it. They just chose not to. I can’t blame them. But I don’t like seeing history being rewritten. THE TRUTH MATTERS. Iraq had a bad habit of failing to identify their targets before they shot their missiles. While our ships all had IFF, I doubt the Iraqi pilots knew how to use it.

      @@Winnas According to someone on TH-cam, it was a Learjet that fired the missiles too. ONLY, IT WASN’T. It was an Iraqi own, French made F1 Mirage. They don’t look anything like a Learjet.

    why no one was asking what they was doing in an war area?

    • @mudman6156
      @mudman6156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We were in a war area because we were escorting reflagged Kuwaiti oil tankers so they wouldn’t be attacked. Had we not been there, Iran would’ve closed off the rather narrow Strait of Hormuz and the cost of your fuel would’ve skyrocketed. In fact, gasoline would’ve had to be rationed, as we didn’t have fracking technology back then. Additionally, many of our own oil resources had yet to be discovered at all. We weren’t the huge energy producer then that we are now. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, we depended hugely on oil from the Middle East. Now we manage to produce more than they do. But in the 80’s most of today’s oil reserves hadn’t even been discovered yet. So the Middle East held nearly all the oil reserves.

Chirac: Friend of Saddam who is building him a nuclear power station with which he hopes to make atomic weapons to destroy those who bother him. (And in the first place, Israel)
    Mirage 2000, French military plane delivered to Saddam to massacre the Kurdish population with German chemical bombs. (Crimes against Humanity not tried)
