The fact that a mother approached the Olympic Committee, with the presupposition that his son would most likely wind up dead, and that the greatest demand she could possibly hope to see fulfilled from any authorities, was merely having the ability of burying her own child, tells you what kind of hopeless sickness living under these circumstances must have been like.

I remember watching the Korean or one against UAE (can'y remember, missed a penalty though) match as a kid, and my Dad had said out loud to no one, "may God have mercy on them"'....I was 11. I asked why?/He said, "remember what happened to Colombia's keeper?. Well, that and way worse. Those are dead men walking Steven, I just pray that it ends for them quick"....I felt terrible. For years if I found out Iraq was playing, it didn't matter against who, I would cheer for them and say a quiet prayer, and would be filled with dread if they lost.

Those men, political leaders, ultimately can end up being men like Uday Hussein. But this is human nature, I hate this part of us. I feel for these men and their families. @Opugilist and Dominic Hewitt this is a fallacy propagated by ignorants my friends. Iraq has been a country for around 2500 years. The following is a quote by the king of Iraq in a speech he made during his inauguration 1200 years ago. His name was el-hajaj ibn yusuf el-theqefi.
"Oh people of iraq!! Oh people of iraq!!! Oh people of Iraq!!!!! Oh people of much decisions and disputes!!! I see on your shoulders heads that appear to me to be ripe for the picking!!!! Now, I hear you amongst yourselves asking who I am (he had snuck into the Kufeh, then the capital of iraq, into the main mosque during a gathering of the biggest and wealthiest people of iraq from that time disguised with a couple hundred armed henchmen). When I lay my turban upon this podium. You will have your answer!!"
El-hajaj was the second most brutal ruler of iraq after saddam hussein. People still talk about his atrocities today 1200 years after his death. In that speech when he laid his turban open the podium his henchmen set about locking the doors of the mosque where he was giving this inauguration speech before commencing to chop off the heads of all the people who were there...hundreds, no thousands of the most nobel and elite members of society in iraq from that time were decapitated in a matter of hours.

I served in the US Army for the initial invasion of Iraq, and my unit was one of many posted up in the Olympic stadium when we (US Army) were still using the space as an FOB. When we relinquished control of the area back to the Iraqis, it was a huge boost of morale for them.
The Olympic Stadium in Baghdad was a strategical boon for us, and offered us incredible defense. There's a 10' or so concrete wall surrounding the premises; and the stadium seating was high enough to look down at the street s and monitor at least a good couple of blocks in all directions. I'm pretty sure that building in the background at 1:05 is the aquatic center of the Olympic complex.
Anyways, I'm just saying, I don't imagine this was an easy position to give back that first year. We got there (the stadium) in May or so, and I think we left August of 03 or so. That whole year is a blur for me. Thanks for listening stranger.
Edit: clarification of locations and personnel

I feel so bad for those young men who are no different to any other young men all over the world, sharing the same hopes dreams and desires that we all have, a great way to know if a government is good or bad without the worry of propaganda is to see how the people are treated, something really profound was said by the goalkeeper at the end of this video, he said he hopes for the day when the people of Iraq have the desire for football again, and I took that to mean that with the country recovering from the aftermath of the Hussein tyranny the people are too embroiled in everyday concerns like where their next meal is coming from and generally just staying alive, that takes up all of their time, they cannot be concerned with anything else other than survival let alone football, so the return of football is longed for because it will also signify a return to normality for the Iraqi people, may God grant that for them as soon as possible as they have suffered enough 🙏🏻

@@flowrepins6663 it's a custom in the middle east and plenty of Muslim countries. Not a wise thing but thy monarchs in Europe did the same.

@@NapoleonBonaparte5 in muslim countries everybody does it? where do you get your info from? only royal families do such things, because they want to maintain their bloodline. although there are certain countries where it is not as taboo, but it is by no means common

If you're wondering why would Uday be responsible for the soccer team to begin with... given hes the eldest son of the president (aka the landlord of the entire country). It's actually because Saddam knew how incompetent and psychopathic his son was, he just gave him what he thought would be the easiest government position; head of olympic sports.... like how could anyone mess that one up right? right????

I am from Iraq. I represented Iraq on the National Swimming Team. The craziest story I ever heard about this while being around my teammates was that Uday would take the soccer players and give them small paper cuts all over their bodies then drop them in a tub of lemon juice as one of the punishments for losing a match or not playing well enough
