    When I first watched Generation Kill, I thought the portrayal of the officers as being so incompetent was unbelievable. I assumed it was because the embedded reporter, who wrote book, was seeing them through the eyes of the grumbling grunts and didn't know any better. I later read Lt. Fick's book about his experience during this time. He said the command problem was because normally recon units operate at the team and platoon levels, attached to other Marine units to perform reconnaissance, and the organizational units above platoon are not combat units but exist for administrative purposes. Therefore, all commanders company-level and above have essentially desk jobs.
    In 2003 they tried something new and deployed marine recon to fight as combat units at the battalion level. This thrusted administrative officers into the role of combat officers. Hence, some were out of touch and didn't know basic concepts like what "danger close" is.

    HM2 Timothy "Doc" Bryan, the guy who calls Cpt. Schwetje out for his incompetence, was actually the most highly trained of any of them. He was a BUDS graduate, and, was a qualified Special Warfare operator.

    • @ExUSSailor
      @ExUSSailor ปีที่แล้ว +60

      From the book: "While Doc Bryan is not technically a Marine, he is a product of the Navy’s most elite special-warfare training and could have chosen to have been placed with either Navy SEALs or a Marine Recon unit. Doc Bryan, who arguably has better combat training than many Recon Marines, is supremely confident of his judgment."

    This has to do according to the book because Recon usually operates in small teams without officers. Officers stay behind and just analyze the recons team info. For the invasion they deployed them as battalion size shock troops. Something that the unit was not built for.

  • @fredgilbert2032
    @fredgilbert2032 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    First off this is the most accurate depiction of post cold war Marines I have ever seen. Also remember most of these guys already had a combat deployment in Afghanistan they weren't cherries. A few of the officers were as there as well. Where this deployment went sideways was explained in detail during the series. These were recon Marines rolling in vics in a battalion formation were not what they trained or were set up to do. Small unit tactics with NCOs and at most LTs running the show in independent movement (recon) is what they excel at. Most of the company level officers were not combat leaders, but were S-1, S-2, or S-3 type billets before this deployment that is why they were so eager to get in the shit and get those accolades as this would be there one shot to get that recognition to further their careers. This is why they looked so lost in the weeds half the time.

    As a support MOS Comm Marine, I can totally relate to Ruben. Some times you get attached to combat units but I joined to be more disciplined and to do my part in getting payback for 9/11. I loved the technical aspect of my job too. I saw just enough mortar and rpg strikes to say I experienced war but not direct combat and I’m totally cool with that.

      Their whole organizational culture was based around operating in squad and platoon-sized elements. Having a bunch of captains and colonels running around trying to do be all officer-ey and meddling and trying to one-up each other and issuing contradictory orders - total culture shock for those recon Marines

    Seat belts funny story. We had some guys getting license to drive the HMMWV back in the states and one guy's doing his road test and rarely ever drives for some reason. Get's in the vehicle and asks, do we need to wear seat belts. SGT says, "I went 14 months in Iraq without one, I'm sure we'll be fine." Guy starts driving and has some sketchy moments and one moment starts drifting into oncoming. We look over and SGT starts slowly putting his belt on lol.

    The thing I loved about this series and that hit a little too close to home for me was how it showed that those Humvees were home. I spent years maybe avoiding this show but after you guys watched it, I binged all seven in a row. The next day at work it was a good thing there was nothing really going on, because I was really back in '03 in my head. Two things, their coms were a bit too good, and we used to be vulgar amongst ourselves about the lady warriors, but we loved getting to speak with them so much that we would never have acted towards them like they did in the show.

    The lone survivor mission and the taker gah/Roberts ridge seal missions are exactly the result of bad leadership. Lone survivor was supposed to be a company of recon marines, with air support. NSW cock blocked them, ignoring intel just because they wanted seals to get in the fight. They pitched it to devgru who basically said no fucking way. So they went to the regular seal teams. Marcus lutrell was a sdvt guy not even a combat guy. Roberts ridge was the same thing. Intel from cag and the rangers said the mountain was swarming with foreign fighters and was basically impossible to hit without huge casualties. Nsw command again thought they were big dick swingers so decided to hit it. The rangers only went with them because they knew it was a suicide mission and just wanted to back them up. The ranger commander even said they should drop in in the valley and ruck up the mountain. The seal commander britt slabinski overruled them and it went to rat shit.

    I know this is 10mo after the video but, you gotta think about how most of these Marines signed up in peace time. Back when we trained to fight one of the Big Red threats. Everything was “eat lead for breakfast, kill kill kill”. By the time war eventually came around, that mentality was most of what officers knew about fighting. Gung-ho was the default position as most anyone at the time had 0 real life combat experience.

He agreed with me, liked my solution to streamline and homogenize the SOP, but, and this is a big but, there's different BC's who don't want to play nice and push back on following the SOP, so they argue until they can do something trivial slightly differently. @21:23 This is the realist thing I've heard from another man. And I haven't even finished listening to you what you have to say. But as someone who's grown up without a father. Having to pick and choose my role models. Not really knowing what I am made of. Or what I can be made into. I feel as if I'm attracted to the military because of the discipline. The fitness, the integrity towards it. And the camaraderie between people who you trust with your literal lives. It must be incredible. I appreciate your truth telling Sean. I'm definitely not a killer. But I'm attracted the to strength, the authority, and decisiveness of the military. And I really like your videos and the guests you have on them.

    Reminds me of Charlie Sheen's character in the Film Platoon. He grew up a fairley wealthy family and went to College. But decided to join the Army cause he felt bad that the poor kids were the ones getting drafted in Vietnam to get shot up. Thanks for you time. And as always...Hold Fast My Friends

    I think comparing Band of Brothers and Generation Kill is totally fair, they are both military shows, sure.. but, they are trying to tell COMPLETELY different stories. Gen Kill is far more of an 'everyman' story, and tries to show people what the day to day life was of the soldiers first entering the GWOT, the struggles they had, the deficiencies in the military at the time, how ill prepared they were for the environment, etc. While BoB is far more of a heroic story of some total f'n studs who changed history and played a big part in some of the most insane operations in history. I really enjoyed both, but BoB is definitely more of a 'hollywood' viewing experience, while GK has more of that introspective/reflective HBO style, where things are a bit slower and it tries to depict more of the nuance and small stuff related to the experience of the invasion.

    I get that its been awhile since you watched the Episode, but Doc was having a come apart when Encino was getting set to call in a Danger Close artillery strike, just because Godfather gave Capt. Patreson an ataboy during a brief for doing that and getting it right.
    Doc obviously didn't forgive him for that.

      Also, people forget that this show takes place during the invasion ('03) and dynamics were veeeerry different from Afghanistan or even later on during the year in Iraq. Dynamics in terms of who the Marines had to work with (there was no training for those volunteers and former soldiers/policemen).

    • @SemperFi_EDC_Guy
      @SemperFi_EDC_Guy ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @spins321 I was there for the invasion. I think the show absolutely nailed both life in the marine corps (it IS different) and the invasion 1000% accurately. When he said they had hardly "got into anything" in the invasion tho, I had to laugh. Dude obviously didn't read the book. That recon battalion was HIGHLY Decorated for their actions in the invasion...and spoiler alert...there WAS action lol. It wasn't continuous like in 06 but there was definitely shit going on and bodies being stacked on both sides. Love Generation Kill!

    • @spins321
      @spins321 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SemperFi_EDC_Guy Also, if I remember correctly, those dudes had been pulled from Afghanistan, right? Also, the mission of Recon and how the battalion as a whole was tasked to push straight through to Baghdad was not something they trained to.
      You're right, without reading the book, alot of this may seem a bit mushy as far as the mission (and the seemingly lack of combat), but the portrayal of the culture and lifestyle is 100. Even the shit about the colors... Semper!

    • @SemperFi_EDC_Guy
      @SemperFi_EDC_Guy ปีที่แล้ว

      @spins321 you are absolutely correct! They did a bunch of what their core mission set is in Afghanistan. At least one deployment. I believe the 2 recon battalions rotated from 2001 to 2003 in Afghanistan. So they were actually already pretty steeped in the battlefield culture prior to Iraq. Semper fi!
      *also, Savage Actual had a "Generation Kill reunion" on his channel 6 days recounting some of the things that battalion went through talking with Rudy Reyes & Savage Actual. Really great podcast!

    As someone who loves how special forces is able to operate with a good bit of autonomy, I wonder if you think the rest of the military should be ran closer to that way, to include MICOs and other support units, not just infantry downrange or combat units downrange.
    I know as a MICO we had to do a fair bit of esprit de corps bullshit with the engineer battalion battalion we were attached to but it annoyed is bc we were for the most part damn good at what we do, but sometimes were stepped on by the good idea fairy from command. Command who hasn't done our jobs in at least a decade.

    Yo, the show is based on an article in rolling stone and a book written by a journalist that was embedded with 5he Marines. Also, this was the first weeks of the war, so No Buck, those freedom. Fighters weren’t trained for years. My guy, did you not understand the year that this story takes place. Also, this applies to why command was so jacked for combat. And lastly, these are Marines. Division Recon. Near,y all their missions involve water and patrolling and they are driving trucks in the desert, which is why they are out of their element.
