They called it "getting thrashed" when I was in .(2001) In the beginning, there were recruits passing out on the quarterdeck. The first two weeks SUCKED

Even though it was 34 years ago, I remember those days like it was just yesterday. Everything a drill instructor did was done to instill discipline, confidence, and strength into the recruits. People who see it as brainwashing have no idea what they are talking about, and it is still as effective today as it was when I was in boot camp.
Technically...it is brainwashing, but not the kind that most people know brainwashing as. It's more like paradigm shifting than brainwashing. But, nonetheless, Drill Instructors are taught how to adjust the way people think and motivate people through punishment and how to alter behavior through environment.
A civilian is not ready for the struggles of combat and a DI is supposed to empty your brain of softness and slow thinking and instill instant reaction, discipline, and the ability to process 100's of things at once.
So...yes, it's brainwashing. But the kind that makes you more efficient. There a lot of people out there whose brains could use a washing....
DI's have a lot more training and knowledge of psychology than most people think.

That was a pretty tame smoke session, based on the types of games they were playing it's a new plt and the guys on the quarter deck are squadleaders and guide. That was just an integrity check to see who would slack and not sound off when they thought he wasn't looking. Thats why he didn't go berserk on them the few times they went feet instead of face or back. Boot camp would take you and your bench/squat/deadlift maxes and bend them over and let the green weeny go to town.

This DI has expressed great skill in multitasking and ensuring that recruits were instructed in a timely fashion. I didn't see it back then as a recruit for obvious reasons, but now I can see the level of considerations that DI's take in ensuring that IT is effective yet keeping in mind of potential injury. observe at 4.08, the recruits are nearing the point of exhaustion and the majority resort to using their knees for support. The DI makes a proper decision to switch them to their backs. I don't know how it was for you guys, but when I was being IT'ed, crunches were godsend. Ultimately, for the few of you who think DI's are a bunch of screaming muscle heads only seeking to cause your life to be a living hell (partially they are) , think objectively and consider that there is more to it than what you just initially see. There is so much more to the intent.
I went in back in 1989 this was a lot softer than what I went through but you were correcting what you said they knew how far to take you and how to far to push you and I thank them all for what they did it make me a tougher and stronger person.

You guys have to realize.. this is probably one of 20 times they do this in a day. On top of a long day.. being sore... having done company PT in the morning or afternoon.. just repetitively everyday. This shit sucked no matter how well or physically fit you were. It was done for a reason.. to teach you a lesson of not to fuck up again for whatever you did wrong.

Brings back memories at the rifle range November 1973. 3rd Battalion Platoon 395. Ssgt Stewart, Ssgt Johnican and Sgt Valentine thank you for taking young boys and turning us into Marines.

I realize it’s a long time ago. I went from active duty USMC with a DI mos 8511 and enlisted in the Army reserves and became a Drill Sergeant. A little different but they adjusted to my way of doing things!

That is a far more tamed-down version of getting smoked on the quarterdeck than when I witnessed in 1990. I even remember when a recruit vomited on the squadbay, and the DIs made him roll around in it until it was off the deck.

Don't ask Boot Camp is exactly the same as it was years ago. I went through in 2001 platoon 3019, Lazy Lima, 3rd Battalion. They have always had a time card and a watch since the 1960s when the SOP came out for them. There is a camera there, they are not going to push any abuse when the know the video is being taken. Our DIs, when we went up north, before we got our 3rd phase guidon, took our flag and ripped it from us and we were trying to get it from them, they took it to the head and pissed on it.
Of course we didn't know that we were getting our 3rd phase guidon, so we were all pissed off not knowing what the hell was going on. Marines are Marines and boot camp is just as strenuous, both mentally and physically as it always was.
I don't like the, " when I was in, it was hard as hell, these days the military is soft". These recruits are being trained to become basically trained Marines and some will go into urban combat which is the nastiest type of combat there is because it is face to face and very personal. It is killing someone's family member because they fired at your humvee, then searching their home right in front of their family members.
These Marines are no soft at all, they are smarter, better trained both mentally and physically then they have ever been.
The brotherhood has definitely changed, and for the worse. The discipline is different. Nobody trusts anyone anymore. Too much brown-nosing and back-stabbing. If you were there during that time, only you can understand. The political correctness, along with some other controversial maneuvers, made it weak...Goodbye old Corps!
Gen X Murse It happened suddenly under Obama. The CG at the time started turning PI into daycare. It was so bad that years later I wonder if wasn't purposely done to weaken the Corps. The rules they imposed were so outlandish that everyone on the Island was demotivated as hell. I heard they recently took the gloves off and it's gotten back to business but there was a noticeable drop in the quality of new Marines from that time on.
You understand that there's a camera filming him right? Take it from someone who was there longer than some DI's, Marines are better trained and in better overall physical fitness now than they have ever been.
It's been 37 years since I was on the quarter deck trying to be a marine.. Today I can sympathize with the DI who is tasked with making marines out of these maggots. 5.5 out of 10 BUT it is only because the camera was on. Anyone reading, I was apart of Platoon 3024 in 2005 and graduated April 1st. Had 7 total DI's as our first 4 were "fired" on Training Day 45 due a to a recruit drowning investigation. Originally, we had Sgt Huff, Sgt Hall, and Sgt Howard with SDI Staff Sergeant Richardson. They were called Triple H, I know, a nice touch ;) Then we had SDI Staff Sergeant Garcia, Staff Sergeant Raynor, and Sergeant Ragsdale. Ragsdale was a beast at what we called in 2005 "Quarterdecking". Funny time at the rifle range...Richardson was pissed, left us after chow around 5:45pm and turned Triple H loose on our asses. Crush the house, build the house, all squad leaders and guide getting slayed on the quarterdeck for 2 hours, 4 recruits filling mop buckets of water and soap and dumping them all over the floor, glasses, sea bags, racks, boots, hell, anything that could move was moved, then we had to clean it all up with the towels that we had to push on the floor, I shit you not, they must have dumped 1,000 gallons of water and soap, and we all got worked. Probably built and crushed the house (for those not familiar, this is picking up every rack and pushing them together, then taking them apart in the squad bay) at least 8 times. Funny shit. Also, on the quarterdeck, they used to require teamwork. Recruit A does not have a straight back, then we all don't and we had to get it that way. Obviously, we would get mad at each other and this only fueled the DI. "Oh, you wanna talk on my quarterdeck? Good, let's talk about getting that back straight!!!!!"
We had a recruit get fucking crushed one time between two racks. He got right up and kept going though. Tough bastard

I came in overweight. When I left I was vascular and almost no body fat.
Plt 3092, H Co, 3rd Btn, 10Oct84 Graduated. It's not just the physical. It's not just the mental. But, it's the combination of a lot of things that takes a toll on most people. After about 5 weeks it became just a game for me. But, a lot of people do need an attitude adjustment to be able to perform at the level required to be a Marine. It's not for everybody. Hence, the motto, "The Few. The Proud. The Marines".

I m not american and def not a us marine but served in a foreign army 20 year ago, this Marine DI reminds me of my own basic and nco training instructors, same non stop physical punishment for hours and lack of sleep, only difference my old DIs were constantly swearing profanity LOL, its kind of amazing that good ncos behave the same everyway, sure we hate them when we are suffering but when I become a NCO instructor I did the same things LOL, those who nv serve before will not understand, physical punishment builds strength, learning to follow order in chaos is essential cos war is chaos, only thing that help you is the drills that you remember and execute accordingly....good old training, to me basic training are way simpler good old times ....miss those times....
The fondest memory I have of boot camp was lining up in formation for morning chow and hearing my DI screaming my name. As I ran into the squad bay, the DI tore my rack mates rifle off the bunk and proceeded to forward butt stroke me in the chest. I literally flew back like ten feet in the air. Picking myself up off the floor the DI gracefully walked over to me and explained why I had just gotten forward butt stroked to the chest. I could not understand a fucking word he said, this was the first full day of pick up, so I just screamed yes sir, no sir, aye aye sir. I finally understood a few days after when some one else got the same treatment but worse. Marine Corps Boot camp isn't a joke. The PT is was easy. Living with the DI's another story. After the first month and a week everything all meshes up and you start to understand the method. One of the hardest jobs I ever had and would never want to trade that experience for another.

J Siebelink your weapon is just like a person to them, maybe even more important. You never leave a weapon behind and unattended. In boot camp you are responsible for you, the person next to you, and the person behind you. So that morning we were headed out for the day, everyone had their rifles and my rack mate was "early" chow. What they don't tell you is if your rack mate is not there and everyone is leaving. You are suppose to get his weapon and bring it with you that way when he returns from where ever, he will have his rifle. "With out me my rifle is useless, With out my rifle I am useless".

MPKingpin No, not the name tape. In prep for the bn co inspection, we (like all recruits were/are expected to) had to mark our name on everything, i.e. collar of blouse, inside of trouser waistband on the left, belt, cover, etc., and I asked him what it was suppose to say. Since he was in cammies, he tilted his head forward and showed me the inside of his blouse collar, which had it actually stitched in, as opposed to the iron-ons that all recruits and most Marines use (if they're squared away, for JOB, regular chucks inspections, etc.). But if that's not enough, I'm pretty sure I looked him up via MOL before and it showed his name as I said in the last comment.

Best way to motivate any young, undisciplined, one way thinking young person. Almost 37 years since I graduated Marine Corps Boot Camp and seems like it was yesterday.
Without the Corps, I'd be nearly wasted out. Personally, I needed the Marines discipline, brotherhood, PT to detach from societal easy life. Not easy, but well worth the journey.

40 years since ... You get off the bus and plant your feet in the golden footprints. Spend 2-3 days in receiving and then pick up your Drill Instructors. The first day after that was... eye opening . You WILL spend time on the quarter desk.... in The Pit... in The Rose Garden (no roses - just thorns, recruit...). "What are you doing slapping at those sand fleas?!? YOU got to eat...." And the ever popular "YOU! On the quarterdeck - pushups! Do 'em until I get tired!"
We weren't laughing about it then but I can smile now.

Our DI's used to make us do mountain climbers and bend and thrust on the quarterdeck for so long that we'd have pools of sweat underneath us. Once I had my boot hit that sweat and my leg shot straight out causing my knee to hit the deck hard. I was laying there grabbing my knee and the DI was kicking me to get back into position. Of course, that was back when they the DI's were allowed to get away with striking a recruit. I went through PI in late Aug '77.
Then there was doing PT in the "Rose Garden" which was simply grass with lots of sandspurs. Those sandspurs would be driven into every part of your body and your hands would be bloody. Of course there were sand fleas, the DI's would not allow us to swat, slap or scratch the sand fleas that were biting our necks and ears. We would stand there at attention until we heard the command "ATTACK" which would allow us a few precious seconds to wipe out the sand fleas until we heard the next command "RECOVER" which put us back at attention once again. Those were the days.
This is called leadership. Teaching a platoon rite and wrong all day on your own.

A little education for you civilians out there: the green belt DIs (the kill hat (most inexperienced) and the J-hat (second-in-command) are only allowed to IT a certain number of recruits at a time. The Senior Drill Instructor can IT the entire platoon, and at least in my company it was often threatened (but never happened) that the series chief drill instructor could IT the entire series. I think East Coasters call them Series Gunnery Sergeants even if they aren't gunnies
I went from 220 lbs down to 188 lbs! during boot camp on the island. Way better than I did when I went through Ft Sill OK Army basic training !
IMHO if a Psychiatrist would view this video I would think that the DI would be diagnosed with a hyper-activity syndrome. Normal people do not act this way.

They attend DI school and are conditioned to do it this way. It's just the way they behave in that environment. Just like the recruits have to learn to act in a certain way in that environment. Man this is the place i love to hate. I was the recriut running with my head cut off. I got smokef and my entire legs and arms was sore for days lol. I encourage very person to come there, even if you can't make the cut just stick it out until they find that u simply can't do it. The marines is better than any military branch in america.

As an 11B (Army Infantry), I've served with the other three branches, and ALL are professional, and worthy of respect! We don't need POG's like you trying to say the Corps is better than the other branches! All branches are part of the U.S. Armed Forces for a REASON, and each has a different mission, but common objective!! You seem to be a cocky bastard, who only respects himself and other Marines! I respect ANYONE, in all branches that have the balls to serve!! I respect the Marines, but let's be honest here...they shove the idea that they are the best, down young recruits throats, and they believe it!! The proper statement would be...the United States Armed Forces are the best fighting force in the world!! Not a marine but a naval sailor in the US Navy. Our boot camp Intensive Training wasn’t anything near as painful as this looks, but looking back I’m happy to have endured the pain

Ricky Henson I went through Army Basic Training and remember thinking Drill Sergeant Harp was a tough Stone chewing SOB. He was harder, more high speed, and more squared away then Drill Sergeant Bankston and Senior Drill Sergeant Alieem. I thought he crawled out of the pits of hell and was here to kill us all. Once I hit Blue Phase(Last Army Training Phase) DS Harp was now in mentor mode and shared with us late one night during mail call that he was a Marine Corp Sergeant for 8 years before transitioning into the Army. He said it was like taking a less stressful position. This really but the fear in us. To this day 17 years ago I keep my edge on and bearing in full effect thx to that Marine and Army DS. After watching hundreds of Marine Corp Drill Instructor videos I can see DS Harp in every single one of them. All have that same intensity you will not find anywhere else.
Yes Ricky lets compare training right after bootcamp you know when it really counts. You know skills you can you use the rest of your life. The Marines don't even come close to what the Air Force can do.

Phil Grondin, I graduated 3rd Battalion Mike Co. Platoon 3036 April 1992. They have four Companies (India, Kilo, Lima & Mike). It was not Quebec Company (3rd Bn) at Parris Island, SC . Quebec Co. belongs to 4th Battalion. Semper Fi SSgt. Gamba 0369 retired
You are correct but for the plus-up for the war in Afghanistan, Quebec company was re-established to accommodate the increase in recruit numbers required by the increase in troop strength. At that time, the Marine Corps was authorized at a max strength of 180,000. With the plus-up, we had to increase total Marine Corps strength to 202,000. Currently, 4th Battalion (Female recruits) is made up of November, Oscar and Papa Companies. Quebec company had not been stood-up since the Vietnam war. I shot this during Quebec Company's last cycle before it was once again stood-down. Their barracks was a small building across from the rifle range.
From the 3rd Battalion website: "From 2007 through 2009, 3rd RTBn. re-established Quebec Company in order to facilitate the mandated training of an additional 28,000 Marines."

I excepted no less to be a legendary Marine, beatings, abuse part all of being a Marine , Pure punishment 24/7 . I excepted no less that's why I joined. There was no TH-cam to give heads up what to except . Still a brotherhood only one can dream of.'
Enlisted in January 1966. PI was not easy but I learned. It’s not hard to understand Instructor. My instructors always took us outside for the hard PT’ing. I retired in 2004. In Vietnam 12/20/1966- 07/14/1969 came back to Hospital. Sent to instructor school. Harder then basic recruit training.. VN hardest place, east Africa second hardest place. Been to 50 Nations, lived in many, ship board for two years ( hated that) Many can’t comprehend military life. When your 17 PI makes you a man. I had no parents, so Marine Corp was my family.

Lol trust me we had plenty of sandpits surrounding these barracks. I was in Platoon 3092 when this was being filmed. We lived on the rifle range. Quebec Company. Away from mainside. Meaning no1 came to save us lol. Main parade deck would hve a black flag for drill. We'd go back to our shitty, cracked parade deck and it was green flg all day lol outside drilling. But teust me we had olenty of days in the sand pit. Im talking at reveille right before chow. Still in skivvies and socks lol
There's times for the Pit and there's times for f*ck-f*ck games in The House. Although the Pit changed right before we graduated after the Crucible in 2002. A kid died from overheating/exhaustion so they force them to smoke recruits in the open now in sand pits and there's a time limit now I believe.
