  • When you think Filson chances are you think of their classic briefcase or this, the Mackinaw cruiser. Named for the tough timber cruisers it was made to keep warm, the design remains virtually unchanged today. This makes for a very cool retro yet modern-cool jacket that is sure to keep you warm and protected in the chilly forests of Washington state or even the streets of New York City.

    I always insert a ballistic armor plate in my map pocket.

    Carl, back in the early 40s Filson made them with real, Real leather elbow patches. My grandpa had one. I now have it.

    That back map pocket is still invaluable today for those who work in the woods. Mine usually carries a tablet now. By the way, Mackinaw appears to originate around Mackinac MI where early wool coats bearing the name were created for native Americans and the fur trade.

    To find one of the old Woolrich camp jackets (two big pockets on the chest hidden by oversized horizontal flaps) would be awesome...I miss my old one !

    Great review Carl! I didn’t know much about these jackets at all prior to this, and I have to say that while I don’t love the style, I am tempted to track one down.

      I’ve gotta be honest, I didn’t really like the style either and it just hug in my closet for years. It’s grown on me though, and I’ve begun to love it for its utility and warmth. I guess it’s akin to the way an old Jeep is cool because it was purpose built and there’s a beauty in that. You can find them in gray, blue, or olive green these days if the bright buffalo plaid isn’t your thing!

    A bit late to the party, but - great video, Carl. :)
    And good that you mention that it is kind of large for its size. Here in Europe, it is almost a full size bracket off! I am a fairly large L, but I can wear my size M Filson and still fit a cotton longsleeve T-shirt, a thick flannel shirt AND a fleece underneath it.
    So if at all possible: Try before you buy.

    The thing about buying used vintage jacket is that you never know if a dead person have worn it before or not. It's creepy if u think about it, unless it is your own family member's of course.

    I learned a trick for somebody that I think is the best use for the jacket; keep a scarf in there folded up so it covers your kidneys - your kidneys are a sensitive area when it comes to cold so it makes the jacket a whole lot warmer.

    4 pens, OR a pen, slim pocket knife, and a AAA flashlight. If you are actually outdoors a lot; those are things that might otherwise be rattling around in pockets or falling out and getting lost when digging for other items. The Cjrb Ria and Harnds Wind are the perfect pen pocket or shirt pocket knives. Only the clip shows and very non bulky. Once out they seem finger size folded and very non threatening design but fold out to bigger than a swiss army. I carry a single AAA flashlight (thrunite Ti3) right next to them, and people notice that. But the dedicated pockets on a mackinaw vest or jacket make so much sense, I wish others would do this.
    The map pocket is another thing others could learn from.

    Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be long until Filson devalues themselves. They're starting to exceed the cost vs quality and we're seeing inferior products offered by them.
    It's only a matter of time now until they pull a Remington and simply give up trying living the last years of their life living on their name.

    I have been looking at the filson website, for product comparison before purchase, and concluded that the mackinaw Jac-shit is the better alternative. The cruiser has 24oz wool and the Jac-shirt has 26oz wool with a 8oz cotton liner. Any other input?

    • @jonstern7511
      @jonstern7511 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cristian FS I can't speak for the cruiser but I have the Macinaw Jac shirt and am very pleased with it. It's not US made but is less expensive than the cruiser and the quality and wool still feel great. The warmth is also great and with layers under it and a scarf and hat I'm easily warm enough for the coldest British winter. If you search for Carl's Christmas gifts 2018 video on his own channel he features the Jac shirt, and in the comments someone who has both tells me he thinks the Jac shirt is the better product

      @@jonstern7511 Carl's video is the reason I began looking into filson wool outerwear. I ended up getting the Jac-shirt. I did like the 2018's edition but this year's is good too. It's really warm and I'm just looking for an excuse to wear it.

      @@jonstern7511 Can you tell me how the military plaid Jac shirt runs in size what size you have and your height and weight to compare thanks

    • @jonstern7511
      @jonstern7511 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerromero6872 I am not even sure what my weight is now but if I buy a smart jacket or suit my size is 38 inch chest. I bought a small Jac-Shirt and it has plenty of room in (I am able to wear a thick sweater underneath easily). In other brands of outerwear I would probably be a medium. The Filson sizes do seem to run bigger than other brands. Since I made my previous comments I have bought an actual Mackinaw cruiser too and bought a small in that, which is ok but doesn't run quite as big as the Jac-Shirt did. I hope that helps

    • @dylanhall6355
      @dylanhall6355 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomynator 600 if you layer really well. For that sort of temperature, you’re better off with a filson double mackinaw if you’re going with a wool jacket.

    • @dylanhall6355
      @dylanhall6355 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They fit very large and boxy. I would recommend going one size down from your regular size unless you want to do a good amount of layering. Your best bet is to take the measurements of a jacket that fits well, and look for one with similar measurements if you can’t try it on in person. I’m a size 40 chest 5’10, 165 lbs, with a lean build, and I wear a size 38/small with most filson, and occasionally even a size 36/xs I some of their stuff

    Hey man, Red Wing (allegedly an American Co) make all kinds of styles.......for the foreign market. I called Red Wing to buy the Harvester boot. They told me they won't even sell them to me. A London guy can buy shoes made a couple hundred miles from me (Chicago), but they will not sell them to me. Corporations are NOT a good idea. They ruin America.
