Heyo! There are TWO active definitions of virgin wool! I’m going off WeatherWool’s blog but there is also another: “Virgin wool is the wool taken from a lamb's first shearing. This first lot of wool from a lamb is the finest and softest wool taken from a sheep during its life. Or it is wool that has not been processed or woven. Basically any wool that has not been recycled”
THANKS for the review Mike! We appreciate all the work and thought that has clearly gone into this effort. One point ... near the end you said KNIT but our Fabric of course is woven. I really appreciate your friendly and don't-take-me-too-seriously attitude. I also really appreciate that you, basically, live in double-time. Usually, videos go too slooooooowwwww for me! Thanks Again and All the Best --- Ralph
I own several Filson wool garmets: jackets, pants, hats, etc. and have enjoyed them very much. I also have two Weatherwool anoraks mid weight and heavy weight. The weatherwool fabric is superior in my opinion. It's much nicer to the touch and is more wind resistant. If anyone is on the fence go with WW hands down. Filson's quality is not what it once was and their pricing is almost as much as WW. Lastly, dealing with Ralph at WW is a joy. Their customer service is impeccable. Ralph has actually answered the phone everytime I've called! Nice video. Thanks for sharing
6 years ago I purchased a Filson Packer Coat for $495. Shortly after they discontinued the coat only for it to resurface with a flannel lining for quite a bit more money. It's now close to $1,000. I absolutely love this coat but think the latest management has totally messed with the company's product line. Discontinuing a lot of their heritage clothing in favor of more trendy items.
Michael, Weatherwool and FIlson both made a great Made in US Wool Coat-- But there are some other brands that I think you should consider in your quest for the greatest woolen coats. Those would be Bemidji Woolen Mills out of Bemidji, MN and Johnson Woolen Mills out of John, VT. While I've never had my hands on the Bemidji, the Johnson jackets are wondergully high quality-- albiet lined with tricot-- and both have been making the jackets in-house for a hundred years or more. Might be good jackets to test out- not sure if they're made with virgin wool or not.
JWM isn't using the tightest weave, and the wool has a lot of pilling. I've had mine a year and really love it though, it's great for the money but not the highest quality wool out there. Bemidji I'm not sure about, but they do offer a 30oz wool which nobody else does. I no longer see their hooded Mackinaw hunting coat on their site though.
The trick with Filson is just buying older second hand coats 😂 they’re still great and very rarely will you pay more than half price .. and I love the idea of wearing a 50 year old coat that still looks great
when you were talking about the lynx pattern and how its a better weave, i was regretting getting the olive shirt jac instead of the lynx, but thankfully literally a second later you mentioned all the colors use the same weave/yarn. whoo. great job as always. my med weight shirt jac is warm and comfy af. happy holidays to you.
I really like the editing style of your videos. You could compare two brands of paint drying and the way you deliver content would make it an interesting video to watch.
I have both as well. The Weatherwool outperforms the Lester River hands down. The Weatherwool is warmer, with less stuff underneath. It also blocks wind better. However, I like the organization of the kangaroo pocket on the Lester River better. I will wear my Lester River anywhere without a second thought. The Weatherwool is still just too dang nice to wear in the woods.
Luckily I live in the NYC area. I’ve visited Ralph at Weatherwool’s headquarters twice. Nice guy and so is his wife Debbie. I visited summer of 2021 when I bought my All around jacket and recently i. Fall of 2022 to discover the status of his peacoats which are currently in production. Bottom line is Filson couldn’t pour piss outta weatherwool’s boot with instructions on the heel.
Thank you for your video. Thank you for your channel. Thank you for sharing this information with us. Keep up the hard work… Your hustle will not go unnoticed, and should bring you success.
Michael, we need to know - when is your wool jacket being revealed and when can I put in a pre-order? Weatherwool is the GOAT of fabrics and I’d love some in your design.
I have a Mackinaw Cruiser and went true to size and it’s kinda bulky but good for layering and still looks nice. I watched the @Stridewise and they made fun of him at the store when he wanted to size down. That cringe had an effect on my choice and I love it. Thanks for your videos. Loved the log joke.
a while back i researched unto this matter and came to filson but in the second hand market. I got an immaculate vintage 1980's filson double Mackinaw in green for £350. ive since seen the same coats in lesser conditions for in excess of £400-£1000 depending on pattern and condition, whether people will hit on these now for the price is another story but im glad i got mine when i did. imho it is the ultimate outdoor harshweather longlasting survival outer garment, if paired with a light waterproof poncho then theres no doubt in my mind it would probably last a lifetime of constant wear outside in the elements. functionality in design of pockets and with the cape for added thickness on shoulder chest and back is just well thought out. Team Snail! Not sure where it went, but that Filson fleece lined wool work jacket looked like a nice deal when I saw one earlier this year. Lining is an interesting concept to explore.
@@briantemplin9684 the thing with liners is youre getting wool for its excellent properties but then in some cases having deathcloth cotton flannel or plastic polyester on your body between you and the wool. Hey Mike I had to break out my Canadian tuxedo this past weekend here in Miami, it got chilly. The 501's have bachelors buttons I installed for the leather ended suspenders.
I have the Heavier Filson hunting coat without the furry collar. A snap on one of the pockets was lost, and I really didn't give it much thought until I found out Filson will repair items like this that have not failed from abuse. The coat is currently with Filson, so we'll see how their warranty holds up when I get the coat back in a few weeks. Did they repair the snap or not? I'll let you know in a few weeks.
I can tell that trying to do both T&H and running your own channel, not mention trying to set up your own business, is really having its toll on you. At some point you will need to prioritise what you see yourself doing in 10 years time, working at T&H or being your own boss
I absolutely love the look of these jackets, specially the Lynx pattern. Then I saw the price tag and almost spat out my coffee. I'll say this, I am not cheap and understand a really good jacket is going to cost some money.... but almost $900 is insane. I am willing to pay more for quality and North American made, but that's pretty hard to justify (to the wife anyway lol). One day, I will own one of these....one day.
That is not what virgin wool is. "Virgin" refers to the first shear or the sheep. The meaning you provided is an obsolete version from ww2 times when wool was in high demand and short supply to force manufacturers to recycle more.

Also, there are companies now featuring garments made from recycled wool (which was originally called SHODDY). --- Thanks --- Ralph
Isn’t it a bad thing that the buttons would rip a hole in the garment rather than just popping off? It’s much easier to replace a button than it is to fix a hole.
From Weather Wool’s online pics of their Anorak, it doesn’t button all the way to or right below the chin, leaving the front of your neck exposed to the elements. Is there a way to minimize this exposure without having to use a gaiter or another layer?
We are moving the button up closer to the neck. But the funny thing is, i did not design the Anorak to be a true cold-weather piece. It's designed for wear over one or two light layers in temps down to roughly 15F/-10C (and up to room temp) but people keep pushing it to colder and colder weather. --- Ralph
Well I went with S and it fits exactly how I want to. Room for layering but doesn't look stupidly baggy. Sleeve and body length are perfect. So if anyone my size happens to read this I suggest true to size for sure.

Filson has gone the way of many old companies. Filson prices are too high and the quality is in the toilet. I've got old filson products and my clothes were mostly Filson in the past but no more. @@GatorAidMedicalyea because they are BACKORDERED they are struggling to keep up with demand. You can find their “in stock” list on their website. You can also place a no obligations reservation for a certain product that’s out of stock for $0. Many products are a few months out, most will be finished and shipped by the end of 2023.
@@zekeyeager1458 that's crazy!
@@GatorAidMedical takes a lot to make nice things in America now..
Big Bill for the win! Lol
Filson prices are too high and the quality is in the toilet. I've got old filson products and my clothes were mostly Filson in the past but no more. They've turned into a ladies catalog order company instead of clothing for men. I'm kinda done donating to Filson and I hope my tin jacket lasts a few more seasons because it the last piece. Too mad Filson went the way of Abercrombie & Fitch.
want to be a firefighter, eh? are we talking about wildland or city?
You need to pause a bit in between. It is hard to watch and understand everything you are saying with all the little asides.
It’s strange how people equate size with masculinity. If the jacket fits, wear it. Just like a condom. 😂
is the weatherwool itchy?
I’d say no! If you are EXTREMELY sensitive to fabrics you may think it’s a little itchy but it’s incredibly soft and you could wear it without a shirt even

Their mackinaw wool hunting jacket is made in bangladesh.
The work jacket for me. I find that Anorak is ugly, in style, colour, and giant oversized hood.
