I love all the builds but the e36 has a special place in my heart. I’ve owned mine since new… a ‘96 model that survived being a dd and track car. Still runs like it did 26 years ago. Maintenance is key…
I did this setup on my last e46 m3 back in 2015. Definitely gives the car that sporty look and the brake performance is better. Overall still a great kit for the money even 7 years later.
@@danielwade9930 I did not. I used the factory components. I upgraded to stainless brake lines, Porsche brembo calipers, new brake pads, and competition package m3 rotors. You will need the caliper brackets for mounting. I sourced mine from a forum member on the old m3forum.
I remember the video you did on this car back in 2011 with FMU showing off the motor swap and the monoblocks… god that is a lifetime ago! glad it’s still with you
I definitely resonate with the sentiment for your first ever project car. My e39 was the first car I ever dove into modifying and I'm coming up on 11 years of ownership. After 7 years of gathering dust I finally got the time (and funds) to bring it back to life with a full m5 interior swap and all the other usual e39 mods. More e36 content!!
I love following this build and details that you have shared with all the E36 community. An alternative "low cost" Brembo upgrade, would be to install front Brembos from Renault Megane RS (a rebuild & painted set can come in at 350-400$, from Europe ofc). They fit the "cheaper" 325x28 brake rotors from an E46 M3 and even the lower spec 325x25 from 330i. Where as the rear can be upgraded again from an E46 330i, with 320x20 rear rotors and adapters for handbrake functionality. Slap in an M3 3.0 (EURO) master cylinder with a M12/M10 adapter for better brake feel.
Man, getting a BBK for $1k would be ludicrously good. Hopefully this video helps a ton of E36/E46 owners out. My vote always is that you work on what you want to, as I've always found personally that maintaining motivation is what's important!
I installed a StopTech ST40 front BBK and E46 325/328 rear brake setup in my E36 328is track car. Cost under $2k, and has been totally up to the task of advanced/instructor level HPDE driving. There's really no need to upgrade the rear brakes, but I totally understand wanting some bling back there. The StopTech kit also gets you much nicer rotors and caliper pistons that are specifically designed to work with the E36 non-M master cylinder. No need for spacers, either. The E46 325/328 rear rotors require zero mods and work perfectly with the parking brake.
Stop Tech makes a great product and kit, for sure. I just wanted to try a DIY path so I could provide info and answers to others! I'm always eager to learn something.
I really like that you used a time-sert to repair those shock bolt threads. I was a motorcycle tech for 25 years and that was my go to thread repair. One thing i liked to do was use a lubricant on the install tool and loctite (red) on the outside of the insert just to insure that the insert stays put if the threads corrode a bit. I dig all your builds and can't wait to see how they all turn out.
Wow never did I expect to see SpasticDwarf making his E36 into cookie cutter E36 we've had since circa 2011. Welcome to the club. Thanks for putting the list together and part numbers that's a big help to some people I'm sure. Idk how you just glossed over the hole machining of the calipers.. that's a big deal. And no mention of master cylinder or break biased. 🤔
That low price of getting the calipers might be a stretch there but none the less still affordable and looks killer. For anyone who reads the comments Partshopmax has a great product for their z32 calipers for e36/e46 for under 1600
Gotta be honest, Mike, I couldn’t give a shit what you work on. Every video you put out is interesting, informative, and just entertaining to watch. So just work on whatever you want to. We’ll be here.
MORE E36 CONTENT! Really whatever you feel working on/have parts for is great. I’m a little biased with the E36 but always great to see you having a great time on a project.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been quietly waiting for this episode while sitting in a corner waiting for you Mike. All this work one all the projects is insane. And I love your vision
Working on a few cars concurrently is difficult for viewers to grasp, but it can be great to focus on another project for a while to clear your head and come back fresh.
Yes I agree with your final thoughts about the E36 :) I sold mine last year (striking while the iron's hot) and am now living vicariously through your enthusiasm of ownership. Great work !!
The quality of production for your content is absolutely amazing! You really can see the effort you put into every single video. Absolutely loving the channel!
Ive never been a massive bmw fan, only because ive grown around skylines, silvias and other jdm styled cars. But its your love for it that has me coming back. You show your care to what you do and your excitement mixed with an amazing effort to want to help others learn and push forward. Big time follower, and will continue, on any car you do. Keep it up homie!
Dude, I remember reading about Rusty in Roundel, feeling sad when your garage caught fire and stoked to see v2.0. As a lifelong BMW owner I’ll never hate on some E36 content. Keep it coming man
Honestly man, I'm here for the Ferrari build (because it's rad). The longer I watch your content, the more I'm super impressed. Every build you're working on is top notch and it's a pleasure to tune in. By the end of this video, I had already clicked the like button and tried to click it again only to find...it was already done. So...I'm leaving another like in the comments! *LIKE*
I did this conversion last year for an e36 front set up. Pretty sure I did it for under 550/600 with decent pads and new braided lines. Well worth it. Only thing worth considering is piston size. Ideally you need to swap them end to end so swapping the cross over pipe and bleed nipple,,,, this can lead to issues if one doesn’t want to come out so be careful. Machining of the caliper surface is also easy to have done
Mike, you always mention it in every episode as I might be a minus to some viewers, but I think it’s really cool that you can hop between projects without it seeming to bother you. I tend to over-fixate on one project till it’s done, which leads me to get bummed out about other projects that sit for long periods with no attention given to them.
Interestingly, I have an E46 BMW 330i and I found the M-sport upgrade calipers from any F30 BMW bolt directly to E46 mount points at the front if you change the brake discs for VW Transporter T5 rotors with the centre bore made out in BMW fitment.
I have been watching since the first episode of the Ferrari and truthfully before that. The delivery of the content is great and breaking it up keeps it fresh. This episode was very timely for me as I have an e36 92 325i that we track and this is exactly the upgrade I was looking for. Looking forward to seeing how you like them when you get to use them.
I wish we could get our parts as easily as its done in the US of A.. in South Africa its another story. Love your shop, all you do and the projects are amazing. Sign me up for the next update!
While I'm not a fan of BMW's, I don't hate them either. That being said I come to the channel for all of the cars you're building and honestly I can't wait to see them all done, especially to see what you are going to work on next under that cover in the back
Love the progress, shop is looking great.... imagine when all three of those project cars are running and in a relative state of completion? that will be a great photoshoot day.
Wish I’d known about this years ago, I had an E36 328i track car and even with E46 330i brakes, it was woefully underbraked. Excellent video as usual 👍
not a BMW guy but love the e36 content as it's a proper streetcar with track capabilities and I'm building / restoring my first car and prepping for track days as much as I enjoy the fab work and design and mods on the hot rod and Ferrari I don't relate to those platforms at all project wise I'm here for the e36
Get the e36 running 💪. Recently started my own rear subframe refresh. S54 should give you a nice smile when you stab the gas pedal again in a long time 💪
Love your work on E36, keep up the good work mate, believe it or not, it's good rehab for me, ill beat the cancer, then I'll need a project to do. All the best.
The reason I subscribe on your channel was because of the E36 build. Love it when there is updates about the E36. The Ferrari it’s an awesome build as well! 👏👍 following along…..
With Mike's comment on "spending more for drilled rotors," please note that will not last as long as blank or slotted. They tend to crack around the holes. Yes, they look like "race car" parts, but race cars don't run them anymore for this reason (they were originally to help vent gasses from asbestos pads, but that's no longer a thing). Slotted rotors help with cooling a bit and combat "pad glazing" (if you overheat your pads). I'm not knocking anybody for buying them for looks, just know what you're getting into and don't be fooled that they're actually better performing.
Love the BMW content! Smash out a solid weekend assembling the exterior, and take her for a drive!! Gotta have at least one drivable vehicle in the fleet!
This is a common BBK for Volkswagens aswell. I had the exact same Porsche Brembo's rebuilt and with some readily available brackets (ebay), installed on my MK4 VR6 4motion for about 600 euros.
16 years, eh? I’ve owned my E36M345 15 years this July. Bought a matching E39M5 last year. Love them both as the E36 does a few things better than the 5.
pretty nice choice, i too installed a big brake kit on my ford focus, but i made the braket as there is no adaptar on the market for the focus mk1; great video Mike, keep up the good content edit: i forgot to mention, i used cadillac cts-v callipers for my focus mk1, as well as we've done macan calipers for the mk1 golf, only hard thing is cnc machining the adapter but usually there will walways be bigger rotors for almost all lug patterns taken from other cars, the focus mk1 took the rotors from the '94 mustang gt
Cannot express enough how awesome this is to see, finally an cost effective big brake upgrade! I wonder if these fit S14's, because if so, I am very much inclined to spend some money on new brakes. Will do some research, but till then, cheers for this invaluable info Mike!

Looks great. I have some 4-piston brembos sitting on the shelf waiting to go on. I should retain the 321mm front disc so I should be around $400. Under 100 for the calipers, 70 for brake lines, and whatever I spent on rotors and pads.
Ferrari videos are nice to watch and in general I really appreciate how much you put in the effort in front of the construction and put in your best efforts. Top brakes for low costs. Good job. 👍
Duuude ive been looking for a bigbrake setup this is PERFECT
Not into that type of car much, but I‘d watch you work on basically anything!

The wheel and tire combo .. ON POINT ... add in the brake upgrade??? #Mint !!
seeing you build this out is great. reminds me of watching tommys slicctop build. keep up the great work!
Love the dedication to the car!
This car reminds me of the E36 my dad had when I was a teenager.
Same. Because it is that car. I feel old.

You mentioned caliper machining a couple times. Can you explain what needs to be done?
Love the BMW content! Smash out a solid weekend assembling the exterior, and take her for a drive!! Gotta have at least one drivable vehicle in the fleet!
I like Your BMW content, not so much of the other "bmw" TH-camrs.
Fantastic e36 update. Love all the projects. Can’t wait for more videos.

Definitely yes to more of your cool e36 build. Would love to see that on the road.
Thank for the tips this really inspired me to do this upgrade myself on my e46 since I’m a big fan of extra stopping power
16 years, eh? I’ve owned my E36M345 15 years this July. Bought a matching E39M5 last year. Love them both as the E36 does a few things better than the 5.

that car is FIRE!!!!!! I really enjoy all your stuff
Go all in on the E36!! Wanna see it on the road!!
For the rear rotor brake, the 750i e38 fit only for M3 and 330i e46 handbrake...
On E36 and E46 L6 (except 330) you need ~160.8mm
Yo, your BMW is a really clean build so far. The other two cars might be at the extremes, but still cool as heck to be watched being put together.
Nice e36 bro. I did not know you had it before Rusty. Keep your videos coming
Cannot express enough how awesome this is to see, finally an cost effective big brake upgrade!
I wonder if these fit S14's, because if so, I am very much inclined to spend some money on new brakes.
Will do some research, but till then, cheers for this invaluable info Mike!
Dead keen to see you thrash the E36 and get it on the road. I need the same motivation too
I have just had completed nearly the same style setup on my mk8 civic.
The kit converts the Renault megane rs brembo 4 pot calipers with a floating 345 disc. They look the nuts and feel great. With the rears having the handbrake built in to the calliper I’m a bit stuck right now to upgrade them.
As ever loving your work
We Love the BMW content Mike! Keep'er coming!
Great stuff. Love seeing the BMW come back to life. Keep it up and get that baby back on the road! 😁
Can’t thank you enough for your helpful video on this upgrade. I did the exact same after watching this video. Then only problem I run into is the parking brake although I max out the adjuster both on the brake shoes and the actual handle but still not grabbing. Hoping you will have an update soon to show how to make this work. Appreciate it
Yes, more e36 content please. Love the channel Mike. Keep up the great work!
Keep that beautiful e36 content coming!!
Damn Mike! Those calipers look dope in yellow! I'm always down for a money saving workaround!? Nice work!
That thing is just beautiful. Nice work.
Looks great. I have some 4-piston brembos sitting on the shelf waiting to go on. I should retain the 321mm front disc so I should be around $400. Under 100 for the calipers, 70 for brake lines, and whatever I spent on rotors and pads.
love those brakes on my 987S, just needs the right pads and fluid and its good to go... and stop.
E36 my favorite out of you cars tbh
YES on more E36 content!
This car is so clean
Dude, you the best. Nothing but the best wishes
Ferrari videos are nice to watch and in general I really appreciate how much you put in the effort in front of the construction and put in your best efforts. I personally own an e36 for the second time now and it’s awesome to see what ideas and implementations you’re doing for this, I’d like to see more of these videos in the future 😍🙏🙏 the channel I’ve watched since the next episodes of Ferrari videos
i think this is a solid solid bang for the buck upgrade. totally agree mike. great video !
Great content, I love how different each build is.
E36 love all over the world!!!!!!!
I was expecting those rotors to be more tbh.
Honestly, that's a good price for the quality of the kit and should give you a big improvement over stock.
Hopefully you won't have too much rear brake bias with the same calipers front and rear but I'm sure you can sort that out later once you get some seat time.
Really enjoying this series as it's a little more approachable for the average enthusiast vs the Ferrari build which is a little out of my price/ability range.
Nice work!
