Yeah I would hope he would mix those in more, this is obviously a show of technique, but mixing in things that fit and complement the song are a part of drumming as well. Not saying he can't do it, but that is pleasurable to the ear and heart. This is more a drum highlight.
There is something that mesmerizing me in this video. Maybe it's the small variations you add in the grooves, the hi-hat licks, which turn out to be unexpected, and are thrilling. One of my favourite covers.
