Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎 UPDATE: I just released a new DRUM LESSON PACK! -> bit.ly/CobusLessons. 5 lessons, 90 minutes, for 27 bucks. It will make you better at tuning drums, mixing drums, I'll show you my practice routine, my worst habits as a self-taught drummer, and teach you one of my favourite linear licks. Thanks for being here!
I love how people criticize Cobus for not being as "fast" as other drummers, as if that is the most important thing. He plays with musicality, trying to make the song better. Isn't that the most important thing?
Gabe Belden Indeed it is! Those complete idiots that thinks speed is all are nothing but brainless fucks with no idea about music at all and should shut the fuck up until they've realized what music is supposed to be!
Gabe Belden And really, who the hell needs speed when you have those tastey ass fills?!?! I'd much rather be able to groove and play linear fills like he can, rather than blast beat for 12 minutes
What I love about this is not that it is technically impressive, although it is, but that it is so damned musical: He varies the dynamic, builds and releases tension, allows the song to breath. This is what makes Cobus not just a great drummer but a great musician.
if that fill was not technically impressive then i dont know what is. That fill was a mixture of everything a drummer should have, not just speed and how hard and how fast you hit your snares and toms.
I don't find this cover very musical. Very poor dynamics; the changes aren't subtle, most of the fills are inappropriate and only there to show skills. Go check Cooper's cover and you will see what being musical really is. And the first thing is, if you're covering a song, respect the song itself prior to showing all your technical abilities.
I love how Cobus can make a video/cover fun just by playing. Not by doing stick tricks 75% of all his videos or doing other things that take away from his actual playing. Still the best drummer on TH-cam!!
Eric Sernin Andrew Basinillo "doing stick tricks 75% of all his videos or doing other things that take away from his actual playing." Basically described cooperdrummer. Cobus still is the best drummer in TH-cam!!
I love seeing how Cobus has advanced through his years of playing. This new series he seems so much more relaxed and confident in his playing, he's not trying to jam in fills every 10 seconds, or making nonsensical rhythm patterns. He has learned the art of simplicity, unlike many other TH-cam drummers, and I think it's just amazing.
I just feel like Cobus plays more "professionally" and "fluently" in this series comparing to the past series. You realize he is really practicing seriously after he gets all those endorsements. He is not only jamming anymore, he is really practicing.
Tony Shing Siu Sze I've been noticing the exact same thing; it became much more apparent to me back in 2011 when he released his Fuego Series. This is not just because he had a (seemingly) more professional production staff. You could just tell that he was developing the mind of a "professional musician", it radiated from the way he played each cover. I have found it to be very difficult to nit-pick at his playing ever since. (I know your comment is over a year old so sorry for the random notification haha)
+Tony Shing Siu Sze I agree man. I just stumbled upon this guy and it looks like he's really felling the music which is what it's all about. Feel and emotion. And yea practice helps too haha
J Elemani Alright, so I think I figured out how he does that fill... (At first I thought it was sextuplets for some reason, but it's just 16th notes) So, it goes like this (the spaces are not rests, it's just to make it clearer) Kick-snare-snare-Kick snare-Tom-snare-snare snare-Kick-Kick-HiHat Stack-Kick-snare-Rest (together)Splash+Kick-Splash-snare-Kick snare-openHiHat-snare-snare snare-snare-Tom-Tom Tom-Tom-Floortom-Floortom And the sticking is... Hi Cobus, I am a 70 year old pensioner who enjoys your teaching method very much. I played drums in a band many years ago but due to unforeseen circumstances, had to give it up. I have now been on pension for a few years and have been feeling rather bored with myself until I saw your program on U Tube. You have rekindled that musical spirit in me and I feel the urge to play again.using your method of instructions..Although not so easy, I find it fantastically exhilarating and enlightening. I now play drums in our local Church band and am having a great time making a noise for the Lord. I am in the process of building a drum kit for the Church and having a great time doing it. Thank you for reviving that old drumming spirit in me again. I really feel rejuvenated with a new zest for life. Like Bob Dillen's old song, "THERE ARE GOING TO BE SOME CHANGES HERE ". Good luck in your future venture things are definitely looking up for you. God bless you. Roy VAn Zijl
He makes everything looks so simple and as if he isn't even trying, that takes the skill of a true pro drummer, always used him as an influence and reference in my drumming and uni work..love how he's come from self taught to a guy who's known by every drummer I've met.. would truly love to meet him at some point in my career
Cobus is definitely my favorite drummer on TH-cam so far. He makes quality content and has a lot of talent. Moreover, he doesn't overdo things to the point of ridiculousness, such as COOP3RDRUMM3R. Cobus is unparalleled, from what I've seen, in quality of content for his type of videos (drum covers, reviews, etc.).
mintyfresh9080 "He doesn't overdo things.... ...such as cooper drummer." Did you even watch the video? He "overdid" things more than Cooper. (Still loved the video)
Sure, and I respect that, but I favor more technical drummers who focus more on the groove and timing than things like stick spins and jumping around the kit.
Are you kidding me? I hope everyone appreciates how amazing it is what Cobus does with these. He hears things and drum parts that just don't seem possible and then makes them seem like they belonged the entire time. Not to mention the production values are superb. Like many things, there's nothing like the original. Hats off!
well personally i feel like the burn cover by Brandon Burkhalter is more technically challenging and i enjoyed it better but like HEY (to all the people prone to starting comment wars) i just wanted to get my opinion out there im new to all this drumming stuff so sorry if im wrong😂 no hate to this guy hes awesome too
Sean Bancod Brandon had some wicked chops, definitely! And the fact that he did a lot more of those is why it's more challenging, so I see what you're saying. I do have to say that Cobus didn't lack that kind of technicality either. He just did less. As you can see, 2:35-2:46 and 3:06 - 3:09 aren't that simple. You'll also be surprised by how hard the intro ride and hi-hat pattern is. Anyway, in my opinion, I feel like Cobus' take on it was a bit more mature, well-rounded, and musical. Brandon is a hella advanced with all the fills but it felt kinda redundant after a while. Please don't get me wrong! Both were great but for me, Cobus got it in the bag. =)
The best is Cooper's cover. It adds up something to the song while fully respecting it and enhances the original dynamics. Cobus's cover and Brandon's are more challenging technically but not nearly as good in terms of musicality. Cobus's changes in dynamics are poor and his fills are inappropriate (though very impressive) and Brandon reversed the song's dynamics by filling the extremely precious pause when the line "you gotta let it..." hits just before the chorus, and also replacing the step-by-step raise in volume by a continuous crescendo throughout the song which is very confusing as the song has a pop structure with verses, bridges and choruses. So yes this is technically challenging, but clearly not the best in my opinion.
I love the way Cobus looks so relaxed and fluent while playing, it makes him look a lot more professional, and is the perfect example of a great drummer, not only can he add some great fills and rudiments in to this song but he can keep time, and not go too over the top in the main beat. GREAT JOB!
I've been playing drums for years and I always come back to this particular video for that epic fill at 3:06 Man even after all these years it never fails to mesmerize me!
Cooper can’t drum at ALL. He doesn’t even play the correct drum parts. Cooper needs to Respect the drum parts that Mede the song famous and play them CORRECTLY
The fact that you can go from an awesome drum fill to being really gentle with the symbols and get really soft and create a nice smooth crescendo really shows your talent and your patience, and in every video that you make I can really see your passion for what you are doing and you get really involved in the music, and that to me is really impressive and inspiring.
The thing that impresses me about 3:06 is not so much the fill but the sense of time. When given two full measures of open solo like that many drummers would be late crashing back into the groove but this guy has impeccable timing. The fill itself is great but at the same time nothing special. What makes it sound cool is the addition of cymbals and stacks in the fill and that is a matter of orchestration and this concept is by no means original. If he just went around the kit doing quads with the double bass or something equally generic no one would be talking about it but from a cold hard music theory standpoint it would be the same thing. A two measure solo. Don't get me wrong its a great fill; its well executed, tasteful, it fits the song, it doesn't throw him off of the groove, and it had the desired affect on the listener. I'm just saying that the fill isn't the most impressive thing from 3:06-3:09, its what happens just before and after that fill. Its what was actually getting us to leave a like and what got me to subscribe.
coming back after 7 years… 7 whole years since this came out, feels like a day ago. Very well put together comment and like the others, i couldnt have said it, nor could anyone have said it better.
I've been watching Cobus since I was in 6th grade....I'm now in 11th grade and from the stretch I've learned sooooo much from Cobus it's crazy. Starting by just watch his covers them the Cobus Method, he revolutionized my way of approaching the drums. He inspired me to reach a level I never thought I'd reach. It's awesome to see how much Cobus has grown and how far he's come. He's truly an inspiration. My favorite drummer of all time. He's now inspired me to make my own covers.
Cobus!!! Don't stop man!! We love you and your covers!! Been watching you pretty much from the beginning and you always inspire me with everything you do!! Keep it up Cobus!!
Here in TH-cam I've seen a lot of drummers doing covers, and none of them possess this level of technique and skill. You feel the music, your fills are always in the right place and time. Congrats!
It's nice how he "drummarize" songs that normally don't have all that drums in studio recording. Incredible how those sounds really fit to the music, in a public audience point of view, of course, making the piece very pleased to hear. Congrats, Cobus.
The most satisfying thing about this video is seeing that huge smile of yours! You're having the best time ever playing this and it makes me so happy! So much passion, its so sexy! YOU ROCK COBUS
Dude I think you are one of the greatest drummers I have ever seen. You are freaking amazing and I also notice that you are a Christian like myself. The greatest thing I could ever wish for would be to become a great drummer like you. I learned like you by playing by ear. I wish I could meet you one day. I would really like to discuss drumming techniques and maybe you could share some of your secrets as well for learning your techniques.
Cobus, i think you have made finally as a musician, in terms of professionalism. You seem so confident in his drumming and comfortable with the tips and advice you give. You is influencing my drumming more and more each day, and i am very grateful. Keep it up!!!
That OMNI chokes moment - epic. And the fill at 3:06 sounded familiar with the TH-cam medley you did once :D Keep the thing coming, I'm a proud long term subscriber. You rock, mate. Drums 4 life
!!!!!!FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO LEARN THAT MONSTER OF A FILL AT 3:06, I FIGURED OUT THE STICKING!!!!! (C = crash, right hand plus kick) ClrKRLrLRKKLRKR (16th rest) RlrKRLrLRLRLRLC If this is wrong, or correct, I'd love for you to let me know Cobus. This is easily my favorite cover you've done thus far.
This was some of the best drumming on youtube, A heavier yet not over powering version. show of musicality. AWSOME! AMAZING!. Love that song. Cobus keep up the good work.
how did he get so much better since the last series??? A couple years ago, you were so genius that I never would have guessed you could've gotten so much better!!!???!?!?!??!
Hey man, would be awesome if you could do a tutorial of the tom groove at 2:35 and the 2 bar drum solo linear fill thing at 3:06 :D Thanks man and keep the covers coming :D
Cobus started the drum cover scene whereas he inspired me to play more, doing drum covers with originality in chops and technique feels like flying when you hit that note on the spot, this guy is pure 100% AWESOME
Ive been rewatching this video for I dont know how many times now! And damn, he made it too easy, made me doubt myself if i could really play the drums or not! hahaha Amazing as always!! Started following cobus on youtube from 2009 and every cover never ceases to amaze me.
I had this video on a playlist playing in the background while playing a game. Once I realized it, I said to myself "wait a minute, this is Cobus' cover". Good stuff
Now for now, copeer has got 2 million of subs and cobus has 1 million. They know for sure that cous is better, but they think to the business, at the time I don't know how much of subs have they rispettively, but for sure Cooper has much respect cobus. For this they take a famous drummer and not an unknown guy. For sure cobus is better than Cooper bit they are both awesome
It seems that there's not place for comparison... What you can compare, by watching recent videos of both of them, it's the technicque quality... but still can't say one is better than the other. Cobus and CooperDrummer have different influences, they have their own styles... strong technique there... weak over there... Here Cobus focuses on virtuosism I think, to have fun and maybe entertain the audience.... CooperDrummer did a cover respecting the original drumpart i believe. Yes, It seems that Cooper's tech it's less developed on same areas, but please... both are awesome drummers... please don't compare "Who's better" Just an opinion. Sorry for my english.
***** cooper is nothing man... seriously.. he is just an average drummer you see playing gigs on a Saturday night.. cobus is unique he puts in these very musically inclined pieces into his drumming that no one else has ever though of putting he has so much more intelligence on a drum set than cooper does.. cooper is just a kid and has many many techniques to learn all he has is flip tricks and simply fills and rhythmic techniques while cobus is so educated in what he does and fit something some simple into a small space to not make it over overplayed.. cobus is by far a way better drummer and for you to say not compare or not talk down to one.. but as a drummer myself and musically educated. cooper has nothing on cobus and never will. Even from cobus beginning time he had something different and has changed and fit songs and his timing from verse to pre chorus to the build ups.. not many drummers can do that on there own without a producer.. and cooper has not shown any of that in his videos..
Neil Patel ***** really?! well first, they cover for fun yeah i agree with Alex Damgaard you can't compare one another.. IT'S MUSIC! hahaha, but for me.. i can do the cooper only maybe see the video 2 times more.. but Cobus? i have to learn drum 2 years again maybe to reach it.. hahahaha
That was fun to watch! I love seeing enthusiasm and spirit on dedication and passionate drummers. I happen to practicing this song myself and really like the rhythm of it. Studying drummers techniques and style helps me improve my ideas and confidence when playing.
This song's drumming just makes me so happy! When he gave that grove, that started at 2:22 till how the drop dropped. Man, just makes me happy and ofcourse the take off and landing of the entire set. It probably gave me the trip of my life. Thank-you so much man, for this amazing high. Cheers Cobus bro. 🍊😋😁
I remember seeing his cover "n sync pop" and that was the first I ever discovered cobus. I really appreciate and love his covers and as a musician myself I have to applaud the talent that is brought forth in all these videos. COBUS I know we've had our beefs lol and it was too long ago but I'm so happy to see you doing so well in life. Keep up the good work and keep them videos coming because you're an inspiration whether you realize it or not. God bless. Lybbee
literally my favorite drummer of all time. you flippin nailed this song and then some! I'm so happy the copyright stuff got removed so i could watch this!!!!
Cobus this is a great cover man! I haven't seen a vid from you since you were still doing covers in a church and to see the growth you've made in your musicianship has been a pleasure to witness. Your understanding of hits, dynamics and just tasty fills have made this cover a great watch. Continue to work at your craft like you've been doing. Its great stuff!
Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎
UPDATE: I just released a new DRUM LESSON PACK!
Sup bruh im active🤘😎
Why no BFMV covers!?
Still my favorite in 2021 mostly 1:15 the fill awesome
Of course always watching this. Still after the long time
Do a drum cover of wasting time by afterlife, here’s the link: th-cam.com/video/AEKyHDB150A/w-d-xo.html
Watching in 2024 and ALWAYS come back to watch this video. That Acapella drum fill in the middle is like nothing I've ever heard. Never gets old.
I love how people criticize Cobus for not being as "fast" as other drummers, as if that is the most important thing. He plays with musicality, trying to make the song better. Isn't that the most important thing?

I love how Cobus can make a video/cover fun just by playing. Not by doing stick tricks 75% of all his videos or doing other things that take away from his actual playing.
Still the best drummer on TH-cam!!
check out cooperdrummer
Eric Sernin Andrew Basinillo Cobus is better and funnier in my mind
Eric Sernin Andrew Basinillo "doing stick tricks 75% of all his videos or doing other things that take away from his actual playing."

Cobus still is the best drummer in TH-cam!!
João Amim
actually I think Luke Holland would be a way better example of that than cooper
Jennica Gray: not to be a hater and i like meytal, but she honestly isn't that great...
I love seeing how Cobus has advanced through his years of playing. Mike Paul I'm talking about the playing drums with fire, the constant stick tricks, the slamming the drums, etc.
mintyfresh9080 Ah, I see what you mean. You see, usually in TH-cam drummers, it's okay to be fancy and show off. All for entertainment.
Sure, and I respect that, but I favor more technical drummers who focus more on the groove and timing than things like stick spins and jumping around the kit.
mintyfresh9080 Okay, I see what you mean, I respect that too. Cobus cover was definitely better.
This guys drum covers inspired me... Hard to believe this was around 10 years ago... And 10 years later Im still watching! Keep it up Cobus!!

GREAT JOB!
I've been playing drums for years and I always come back to this particular video for that epic fill at 3:06
Man even after all these years it never fails to mesmerize me!
The only reason people like coopers version is because there is fire but this version is some much better.
This version is more complex and pretty good but cooper version is more fun in my opinion
I like the cross over part in coopers cover.
More fire in cobus's version imo
Cooper can’t drum at ALL. He doesn’t even play the correct drum parts. Cooper needs to Respect the drum parts that Mede the song famous and play them CORRECTLY
Isaac Oden what’s wrong about improvising lmfao
I love the way Cobus smiles at himself after playing a mind-blowing fill, as if to say "yup, I wrote that..."
Improvised*
Yeah, it's mind-blowing, I don't get it, how cobus can smile, while he's playing so difficult part.
Or he’s smiling because he’s in the moment, feeling the music and his own rhythm.
Been watching Cobus for about 5 years and he's STILL one the best drummers I've ever seen.

Oh my gosh that fill at 3:05 is so freaking sick
Foot technique at 3:30 for those doubles still boggles my mind!! Insanity!
It's the heel-toe technique
Here in TH-cam I've seen a lot of drummers doing covers, and none of them possess this level of technique and skill. You feel the music, your fills are always in the right place and time. Congrats!
I’m back 9 years later just to hear the fill from 3.06-3.10. Unreal.
10 years gone by, and still he made the BEST drumfill for the song!
i love the change of rhythm at the end. adds to a satisfying ending :p
I hate it.
His dynamics on this song are immaculate. Well played, senor.
It was amazing the first time i saw this video, but now it's even more amazing.
It's really sick how great this video is, repeat mode is activated!
Perfect ad for Hair products Cobus! perfect hair all the time!! perfect performance perfect vid..perfect everything!!
This dude isnt just a drummer, hes a musician, it was like singing but with drums, it was awesome
You can just see the passion on his face when he plays, it's crazy. You can tell he loves it.
Dude I think you are one of the greatest drummers I have ever seen. You are freaking amazing and I also notice that you are a Christian like myself. The greatest
thing I could ever wish for would be to become a great drummer like you.
Keep it up!!!
wow. Telling a musician he finally became a musician. What a compliment
Wow! That fill at 3:06 is amazing!! Well done!!!
You are amazing....I also play drums at very basic level and you become my mentor just after this video.
Love from India.
The fill was fucking sick, but can we also talk about that tom ride before it too?!? God damn 🔥 You’re such a beast Cobus, sick drumming man.
❤
I love how you always pick the most unique songs to do drum covers, and it’s hard to imagine the song without your take on it now.
That OMNI chokes moment - epic. And the fill at 3:06 sounded familiar with the TH-cam medley you did once :D Keep the thing coming, I'm a proud long term subscriber. You rock, mate. Drums 4 life
this is probably my favourite cover ever! his setup is amazing

If this is wrong, or correct, I'd love for you to let me know Cobus. This is easily my favorite cover you've done thus far.
how did you transcribe it ? I mean its pretty fast.
Ishan Dave youtube has a feature that allows you to speed up or slow down a video, so I just watched it slow like four times and I got it.
Lucky to call this guy a friend. PERFECTION!
Cooper : just for show !
Cobus : SOUL !
This was some of the best drumming on youtube, A heavier yet not over powering version. show of musicality. AWSOME! AMAZING!. Love that song. Cobus keep up the good work.
The Solo At 3:06 is just Vomit Inducing, Great Cover As Always By Cobus.

Slow it to .5 speed... it's not that hard... but sounds really good :)
Love how you always save the extreme chaos for the last chorus. You continue to be a legendary drummer! I aspire to be half as good as you are one day

Hey man, would be awesome if you could do a tutorial of the tom groove at 2:35 and the 2 bar drum solo linear fill thing at 3:06 :D Thanks man and keep the covers coming :D
After watching this cover I can't listen to the original version anymore. This is my new favourite version of this song, great work and much love..!!
2:45!!!!!! LOVE HOW YOU WENT FROM SUPER HARD TO SOFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This cover has officially blown my mind!!! love every second of it!!
Cobus, i can't watch The video!
It says is not available in my country!
Please fix it :(
Perhaps, AMAZING COVER!!
lol. try using Tor Browser
Cobus started the drum cover scene whereas he inspired me to play more, doing drum covers with originality in chops and technique feels like flying when you hit that note on the spot, this guy is pure 100% AWESOME
3:05 fill is the best fill ever for your drummer ear
Ive been rewatching this video for I dont know how many times now! And damn, he made it too easy, made me doubt myself if i could really play the drums or not! hahaha Amazing as always!! Started following cobus on youtube from 2009 and every cover never ceases to amaze me.
jizzed at the fill at 3:07 !
I had this video on a playlist playing in the background while playing a game. Once I realized it, I said to myself "wait a minute, this is Cobus' cover". Good stuff
3:07 . That was SICK!!
you are the first who knew exactly how to play this song, you're the best cobus, lov ya #teamcobus
and they wanted Cooperdrummer to play with her...
it should be cobus :-P
Now for now, copeer has got 2 million of subs and cobus has 1 million. They know for sure that cous is better, but they think to the business, at the time I don't know how much of subs have they rispettively, but for sure Cooper has much respect cobus. For this they take a famous drummer and not an unknown guy. For sure cobus is better than Cooper bit they are both awesome
Technically enjoyed!....burst with grooved things inside that waits to be played...AWESOME!
Who did it better? CooperDrummer or Cobus????
It seems that there's not place for comparison...
What you can compare, by watching recent videos of both of them, it's the technicque quality... but still can't say one is better than the other.
Cobus and CooperDrummer have different influences, they have their own styles... strong technique there... weak over there...
Here Cobus focuses on virtuosism I think, to have fun and maybe entertain the audience.... CooperDrummer did a cover respecting the original drumpart i believe. Yes, It seems that Cooper's tech it's less developed on same areas, but please... both are awesome drummers... please don't compare "Who's better"
Just an opinion.
***** joshua suter check out my cover of this song and see what you think! :)
they don't even play covers for competing, they do it for fun x)
3:00 that fill in the gap owned the whole song....
Hated it.
Tolkirum do you want a hug bro

God bless.

Anyone else lose their shit at 2:39 ?
