So 170 Revolutions per minute, the average length of a treadmill track is 5 feet long, or say for sake of argument 11 feet in total, that's 1870 feet per minute, or almost 35km/h, or 21 miles per hour, so it would take an Olympic sprinter to be able to run on this, which is still pretty impressive

You would have had to include the relay in there, that little 8 pin relay likely would simply have arced over and burnt itself to a crisp first. Not enough contact separation to survive and extinguish the arc, you would need to have a proper double breaking contactor with 4 poles, 2 NC and 2 NO, with break before make contacts, to have any hope of surviving that.

Brilliant piece of work. Never have I seen somebody hate a piece of equipment with so much fun. Now fit a washing machine motor to it and shred the bearings and belt on it..
Need to use the big washing machine spider and the large pulley to drive it, and it will be impressive. May need a small amount of beer can spacers to get the pulley to fit the motor shaft, along with a bit of JB Weld to hold it there.

compared to a lot of stuff you have played with in the past this motor was definitely made very well (if that treadmill was to fail it wouldn't of been the motor), it really taken significantly amount of load before it failed
Andy I found this channel about 8 or 9 years ago through Ed over at Aussie50 (Rest in peace...), and through your channel found Big Clive, it's so good to see you back and making content again. Very few good channels actually survive a year or two let alone this many. Hope you're doing well.
This reminds me of something that happened when I was one of the technicians working on an ultra high speed printer. It's print speed was not measured in pages per minute but meters per second. To give you an idea the target (which we exceeded) was 25 meters per second or roughly 4500 pages per minute. To test the print head we had a weird conveyor effort that moved a single page past at 30 meters per second to prove the head could firstly detect and register the page and then do the test print. This is the paper detected and the maths done to calculate how and where to print and to actually print it all in 10ms. We had the prototype built tested re-checked and validated the Friday lunch time before the bigwigs from the customer came in to get an update on progress. The bosses bosses bosses boss came in after going through all the data (3 times knowing him and getting his right hand man to cross check) then explained he was very pleased with the excellent progress. He then proceeded to show us how to use the £250k high speed paper conveyor to launch paper aeroplanes.
Were you actually launching paper planes at 30m/s? I'm amazed they survived that enough to fly afterwards lmao. 110 kp/h is well beyond terminal velocity of even the pointiest paper plane, I would expect the launch acceleration to crumple the paper before its even flying.
My first job when I left school was winding the armatures on PM motors for a company called Klaxon in Birmingham back in 1988. We used to do stuff like this in the test room to see how far we could push a set of windings. Good times!

I don't think the motor actually failed at 500v. I think the lubricating grease did.
Even though they are old tech, DC motors are surprising resilient and powerful.

This reminds me of something that happened when I was one of the technicians working on an ultra high speed printer. It's print speed was not measured in pages per minute but meters per second. To give you an idea the target (which we exceeded) was 25 meters per second or roughly 4500 pages per minute. To test the print head we had a weird conveyor effort that moved a single page past at 30 meters per second to prove the head could firstly detect and register the page and then do the test print. This is the paper detected and the maths done to calculate how and where to print and to actually print it all in 10ms. We had the prototype built tested re-checked and validated the Friday lunch time before the bigwigs from the customer came in to get an update on progress. The bosses bosses bosses boss came in after going through all the data (3 times knowing him and getting his right hand man to cross check) then explained he was very pleased with the excellent progress. He then proceeded to show us how to use the £250k high speed paper conveyor to launch paper aeroplanes.

Were you actually launching paper planes at 30m/s? I'm amazed they survived that enough to fly afterwards lmao. 110 kp/h is well beyond terminal velocity of even the pointiest paper plane, I would expect the launch acceleration to crumple the paper before its even flying.

My first job when I left school was winding the armatures on PM motors for a company called Klaxon in Birmingham back in 1988. We used to do stuff like this in the test room to see how far we could push a set of windings. Good times!
