Ah you converted finally. I've been doing it for the past 2 years rotating between 3 chains and I'm a big fan. None are close to wearing out yet which is the biggest benefit for me. Even though I would religiously clean my bike chain it would still wear out on me pretty fast when I was using regular lube. So I'm definitely saving money with the wax. I'm even doing it on my mountain bike but it doesn't last as long unfortunately so I have to top it off with some silca wax to keep it going without taking the chain off again. My wife thinks I'm pretty nutty already with my bikes, using a crockpot and wax was a whole new level for her to laugh at me about. Thanks for the videos!

How much mileage do you do between re-waxing? Do you do the boiling water over the used chain before putting it back in the wax?

    • @jimmylai9174

@@DEXVD My road bike I typically decide to swap it at 500 miles. That's a mix of indoor trainer and outdoor rides. I also will pour on hot water on the chains in a foil container then wipe it down after with a old rag before I dip them back in the wax.

    Few tips for anyone.
1.) You should strip it down with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. It doesn't have to be perfect but get it done as best as possible as it gets waxed and reused the wax will eventually penetrate the chain in all the links.
2.) Clean everything else on the drivetrain (chainrings, and cassette, these should be spotless), nothing else will get the gunk off the areas and you'll be dirtying the wax every time you rewax.
3.) When pulling the chain out of the wax let the wax cool down by turning the crockpot off there should be a semi-solid layer that forms on the top part of the crockpot. Why? if the wax is super hot it's not viscous it'll drip out of the rollers and small gaps, your drivetrain won't be "waxed" and you'll be wearing down your drivetrain/won't last as long.
4.) wipe the chain off when hanging it extra wax on the outside of the links rubs into the cracks of your cassette and can cause you to mis shift if it gunk's up and doesn't get washed.
5.) Don't put all your wax into the crock pot, more wax=more time to heat up put in enough so that when the chain gets put in it's just submerged, you can always add wax as needed.
6.) if you have access to a small mesh grill/sift use that in the crock pot as your chain continues to be ridden metal shavings will end up at th bottom of the pot you don't want those shavings to end up back into your chain.
7.) wax your quick links as well.
8.) if you ride in the wet you'll need to rewax after every ride.
9.) the chain does take some time to break in after it's been waxed and re-installed (I'd say about 30 minutes of riding, once it's broken in your drivetrain will be silent, and you'll notice how much more efficient it is on some of the longer rides).
    enjoy :)

A lot of great tips here just did my first waxing this weekend. However as per Molten Speed wax left the excess wax on the outside of the chain. Will see how that works out, they suggested it would actually help reduce friction but will see if it gunks things up, I'm hoping it will flake off rather than getting gunky.

    • @jaspreetsidhu5708
      @jaspreetsidhu5708 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DEXVD I think that will depend on their formulation. I use parrafin wax and some baby oil to moisten the wax (so it's not so hard at around a 90/10%) ratio, I've tried putting in ptfe etc but found little to no difference and they're not really that great for the planet. I usually rewax at around 300-500km mark (at the shorter end when I know I have a big set of rides coming etc). I ride enough that it usually ends up being once every week or week and a half. I do use the boiling water and soap to clean off the gunk before it goes into the crock pot. If I can have less junk going in I'm happier.

silca recommends to allow the wax to cool some before you remove the chain as the liquified wax will drip out of the chain. allowing the wax to cool some to be more viscous will ensure the wax to stay inside the chain.

I wax my chain every 200 miles. First I drop the chain into an ultrasonic cleaner with Simple Green degreaser and water. Every 30 minutes I rinse the chain under running water and flip the chain over and run the ultrasonic cleaner for another 30 minutes. After 4 runs - 2 hours - I put the chain in a warm oven for an hour to drive off the water. Then the chain and the master links go into the crockpot with the wax. I use Gulf Wax from the grocery store. After an hour in the wax I extract the hot chain using a dental pick and drop it into a cardboard box to cool. I re-use the master links; I have never had a problem with this. When the chain can no longer pass the 0.5% “stretch” test with the Park Tool gauge, it gets replaced with a new chain. This is a SRAM Red 11x2 system and it seems to work great. Very smooth, very quiet.

I use a clear mineral spirits from Lowes. I keep it in a glass jar. I also have a glass jar for the denatured alcohol for rinsing off the mineral spirits residue. I let the wax soak into the chain then turn off the crock pot and let a film form on top of the wax before I pull out the chain. I have found letting the wax slightly cool before removing the chain prevents the wax from dripping out while really hot. It last longer when doing this. I use Molten Speed Wax. It contains some additional additives besides just wax.

I switched over to waxing this year after 25+ years of riding convinced it was a stupid waste of time. Turns out it's better in every way: immaculately clean, smoother running and easier to maintain. The initial cleaning of the chains is a bit annoying, but after that swapping out chains is far easier than laboriously cleaning and relubing your drivetrain. I run a three chain rotation as it's no more effort to rewax three chains than it is to wax one. I go through two chains and then rewax both while the third is on the bike.

I think it might have been easier with a smaller slow cooker… I use a 3.5 Qt for that reason. It’s really about the same amount of time when you consider having to clean the chain, bike etc. as much. If I go on a mixed surface ride, I wipe the chain down quickly with a Clorox wipe and it’s pretty clean. You can also brake in the wax by running it around a PVC pipe a few times.

I rotate 4 chains. The initial prep of removing the factory lube is the most annoying step, but once that is done, this process is hands down legit and all of your components last longer. I will never go back to normal drip lube. I know this is a sram AXS chain, but if you a get a normal chain, get a Wipperman Connex link. Makes this process even more of a breeze. I take my chain off with my hands. No tools needed. I hate when I have to work on friend's bike or help them change their tube and they have a nasty ass drip lube chain.

I can't be bothered with all the work involved with this process or running tubeless setups. I just want to ride my bike for the fitness then get on with my day or take a nap since I am an old guy now. 😁 I would like to have that product tested to find out if there is actually any graphene in it.🤔🤔

the wax will be a better longevity and a cleaner system, they also say less friction but it is more hassle to do each time, the lube is like a place holder in terms of it is trying to do what the wax will accomplish but not the hassle of having to do the process, so a little more dirty more frequent lubing in between rides

I get that alot of folks swear by this waxing process, and chain lube methods are like religious dogma in the cycling world. But it is a LOT easier to just get some citris spray degreaser and a bottle of dry lube. Takes me 5 mins to clean and re-lube my drive train. Works fine for me. Chain lasts plenty long. This waxing process seems like a ton of extra work for marginal net gain. YMMV, to each his own, caveat emptor, don't hurt me, insert vague disclaimer here, etc etc. :-)

Did this, this weekend, used a 3 step cleaning process clear mineral spirits, degreaser then acetone. Hang dry overnight and a day as I raced today. After supper, used the Silca wax in a crock pot I bought used for $10. Now have all 5 chains hanging to let the wax cure. Tomorrow I will crack all the links and get them ready for being put on. Still have half a bag of fresh wax so will probably use the used wax in the crock pot for re-waxing used chains and next batch of new chains will use the remaining fresh wax.

Had also read to do it visually (when a thin layer at the top starts to solidify). Because I was doing the less precise visual way, every chain came out with a slightly different amount of wax on the outside of the chain. Only the one dura-ace chain I did came out what I judged to be perfect with a really nice even coating. The others had little clumps or excess wax in areas.
