      I had a hell of a Battlestar fleet for that final mission. I was actually able to save Columbia. I fired every single missile I could from my Battlestars at the two base ships above it And I sent every viper I had to cover Columbia. I actually pulled it off and Columbia was heavily damaged but they were okay...... But then the mission just froze there The story is dependent on Columbia being destroyed. I felt so disappointed. I was hoping that they would have written an alternative script in the mission if you happen to save Columbia and the cylon still do the armistice but you're able to save the ship. I had to restart the mission and let Columbia be destroyed In order to finish the game.

He was killed, but saved who knows how many. This was during the first World War. the ship that exploded was carrying nearly 3 kilotons of explosive and destroyed the whole city port.

    1:37, the garbled screams coming across his frequency is so chilling.
    After watching three seasons with a ship exactly like that, capable of carrying some three thousand crew men and women, and then watching one explode with all hands lost. Imagine the terror of being aboard and not totally obliterated in the explosion. Imagine the number of screams on every frequency, not just his. I guess this is a sign of great show writing. From the viewers point of view, battlestars never die, and watching it happen is disturbing.

      How did the Columbia get destroyed??? The Galactica took far more damage in the series run and (mostly) survived despite losing much of it's structural integrity. I'm guessing the main reactor was ruptured causing a Nuke scale explosion from within the Battlestar tearing the Vessel apart in all directions. A similar fate would have befallen Galactica in the Pilot Miniseries had Colonel Tigh not vented several Hull compartments when they were filled with fire that nearly ignited the fuel lines.

    • @admiraltiberius1989
      @admiraltiberius1989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Richard Ched I think the Cylons could have boarded the Columbia and destroyed her in a suicide attack. They downed her defense grid then went for the magazines. That explosion looked like her magazines went up then her reactors followed. You heard someone on the comms saying to “Stay away from Colombia airspace, stay away now.” So someone on board realized what was gonna happen and tried to save the escorting fighters from the blast. It’s absolutely horrific to think about 2500,3000 men and women being gone in an instant.

      @@admiraltiberius1989 that actually sounds pretty awesome (And very likely). But wouldn't someone have reported that the ship had been boarded? It was only a minute or 2 between the Columbia's defenses being shut down and her eventual destruction. Its destruction was unexpected that much was clear. The Columbia seemed to be more prestigious than the Galactica at the time (And was probably the Flagship of the operation) The Galactica only gained it's "Legendary" status among the Colonies because it was one of the only Battlestars of the initial 12 to survive the war and avoid retirement for 40 years.

    I couldn't imagine the pain and fury Adama had when he heard those screams when Columbia went up. Not even able to make it to any escape pods (if any were available). That's why Adama was so protective of his people and ship. This destruction reminded him that your ship and crew are your responsibility. And to watch an entire Battlestar die with all hands. I can understand the hatred he had for the Cylons. But it was repeated and put to the test decades later.
    With Saul Tigh. Adam's oldest and dearest friend. Saul's people were the 13th Colony to leave long before the Galeon left Kobol carrying all of humanity. He suffered watching his own version of the Cylons die at the hands of their Centurions. The final five remaining Cylons on a desperate quest to find the Colonies and warn them about the development of Artificial Life. And to find that about your best friend? I'm amazed it didn't send Adama completely over the edge. Adama was a man who walked with the "Shadow of Death" and often called it his only friend.

    The officer warning at 1:22 , i think that a catastrophic Magazine detonation caused the demise of Columbia. Probaly in most Battlestar loss cases, it got engaged, hit pretty hard, weapons and propulsion disabled and the crew ordered to abandon ship, just like most major warship losses in WW1 and WW2
    Yet the rare and catastrophic thing to happen is a magazine detonation(HMS Hood, SMS Seydlitz), as you can see Columbia is hit on the top part near the Main battlestar artillery cannons. The explosion, while difficult to say, seems to happen at first in this location. It makes sense that the magazines are located in that area to feed the artillery cannons. It could also be the compliment of Missiles, both conventional and nuclear
    Thus, my THEORY, is that Columbia was lost because of a very rare cause. Any ship, real life or sci-fi, will do everything to protect its magazines. This bone chilling scene does remind you that anything, no matter how powerfull, can meet its demise

    • @shaftoe195
      @shaftoe195 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree with your theory.
      During this sequence, you can see Columbia's dorsal artillery batteries destroyed and on fire. Keep in mind that there is no oxygen (or any other gas that can burn) in open space, so that wasn't your "usual" flame. Something had burned. Something very very bad. It is likely that, at some point during the engagement, protection bulkheads separating those artillery turrets from their ammo storages were destroyed or simply failed. Thus, fire was able to spread and either get to the magazine directly, or cause detonation by heating up the compartment filled with shells to the point that they exploded. Crew, particularly people in CIC, knew of this situation onboard (there is an automated system notifying CIC of fires, shown in early episodes of the series) and thus had the time to warn all nearby Vipers to retreat.

      Problem with any warship. You always carry enough munition's to destroy yourself. I'm sure the Battlestars were designed to protect their munition stores, but an out of control fire or lucky hit, and boom.

      @GSF404 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that's almost certainly the case. The main explosion looks to have originated toward the back end of the 'alligator head' portion. That's also where the vertical nuclear launch tubes are on Galactica, so either way I think ordnance detonation. 😑

      Your theory does seem valid, I will point out, that the examples of SMS Seydlitz is a bit off, she had a flash fire on ther super firing aft turret during that raid and ALMOST had the aft magazine go off, but the crew managed to close the flash doors and flood the magazine before the fire could reach it. HMS Invinsible, HMS Indefatigable, HMS Queen Mary, all three went down due to magazine detonations (either flash fires started at a turret or direct penetration to the magazine). All three combined having less than 2 dozen survivors amongst them, and the armored cruisers HMS Defense and HMS Warrior also going doing with all hands due to magazine detonation, and SMS Pommern going down as well after a torpedo set off her secondary magazine.

    When you hear those scream over the wireless...man, that's chilling. There was a similar scene in "Memphis Bell" when a B-17 loses a tail and the fuselage spins down out of control.
    Anyway...I remember in "Valley of Darkness" Lee saying that sickbay was a disaster shelter, designed to act as a survival pod in case the ship was lost. It was capable of being sealed off as we saw in the episode. If that ever happened during the first Cylon war they would need Colonial forces to locate and rescue them, but it would be a chance. I know this is a very old thread, but I wanted to point out a possible fault in the Jupiter Class Battlestar, and the Columbia at large. Did you see where the fire was? It was aft of the normal amidship Colonial Seal (Speculation is that it's a relief of Nike, the Goddess of Victory with her wings out). The fire implies that Columbia's armor was compromised near their primary Tylium tanks. Tylium (Possibly liquid hydrogen or another yet undiscovered element) is extremely volatile and the sheer heat of fires around it, is known to cause Tylium to become unstable and explode.
    What was puzzling, is that Columbia did not attempt an FTL jump to clear out from the Cylon assault. Instead they seemed to opt to perhaps provide firepower to the other ships as a task force. Or the other vessels (Piscon or Atlantia) were damaged and unable to continue firing, so Columbia took the damage and insured the survival of the remaining ships. A truly brave end. But could you have imagined if Columbia tried to jump and failed? Wrecked suddenly shifted from one state to another?

    • @GreyPathBushcraft
      @GreyPathBushcraft 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      If you saw the old series, the Cylons would always try to ram the landing bays. Viper munitions and fuel lines ran from those directly to the heart of the ships reserve fuel tanks. There is an episode "Fire in Space" where Galactica suffers catastrophic internal fire from just such an attack. Now, looking at the Schematics of the battlestar (Mercury class) and this clip, we can see that the fuel storage is running along the length of the ship from the head to about the mid section and also aft to just behind the head. We can also see that the nuclear missile launchers are in close proximity. The head of the ship is where the crews general quarters are. Along the top of the ship are the FTL 1 and FTL 2 core and sink drives and that was where the main focus of the attack seemed to be, the upper surface. Likely those were knocked out to prevent escape. Judging by the detonation, it was munitions likely cause by a catastrophic breach of the fuel lines. At 1:09 you can see heavy missile strike hitting the landing bay and midships right on the main Tylium storage tanks. Remember the old series? Why Tylium caught fire, it took out a planet (Carilon)

    Been looking at the comments about Columbia's destruction. I think Columbia and the other vessels Cylon's included were probably in the firefight for quite a while. Its likely she was already suffering battle damage and the Cylon's likely focused on specific parts of the ship likely hoping to nail a vital part. In this case her upper spine, you do indeed see fire coming from the middle top of the ship so its likely the cylon's already nailed several volleys into her hull and she was probably already dying but was too stubborn of a ship until the magazine's and power-plant finally blew. If only we saw more instances or visuals of the Cylon war.

      Columbia's armor doesn't even look that damaged. Just the upper area Has any damage.
      Even Galactica at the end of the show still had turrets firing even when Galactica was on the verge of being destroyed. So I don't understand how Columbia is just sitting there taking hits and not firing back.

      @@richardched6085 I don't care what the game or this flashback says. Engaging baseships within visual range of your battlestars make no sense. Remember the Battle of Midway? Carrier Battle Groups engage each other beyond visual range, letting their fighters and bombers do the actual fighting against their enemy ships.
      The flashback gets around that principle by saying "the Columbia has lost her defenses," meaning that her flak screens were down on top of losing her own Vipers to enemy action, without explaining why or how she's within missile range of the cylons in the first place. That's not nerfing the Jupiters, it's just plain bad writing.
      And in the original series the flagship battlestar Atlantia got whacked too, and back then there was no CNP hack to explain how the battlestars were vulnerable to attack. If that was the inspiration for this scene then that means the Jupiter-class isn't as formidable as Deadlock would have you believe. Maybe the Columbia got out-maneuvered, maybe her commander engaged in inferior tactics. Whatever the reason it is not unreasonable to believe two baseships and her fighters can engage and destroy one battlestar before turning their attention to another.
      This is a battle in orbit after all, and the rules of orbital mechanics don't always favor who has the more battlestars in the immediate battlespace. Where they are during the battle counts more.

      @@Ryan_Christopher You bring up lots of good points. Maybe the Basestars FTL jumped around Columbia and disabled it's defenses and FTL Drive with a single rapid precision strike. Columbia would have no way of getting out of that. Basestars carry 300 Raiders each (Which means that at most 600 were strafing the hull). The Galactica and 2 other Jupiter Battlestars were quite a distance away when this occurred. I think that Deadlock sorely overestimated the power of the Jupiter Battlestar. It was a Battleship/Carrier. Not a super duper Warship. The Columbia was clearly separate from the 3 Jupiters seen in the establishing shot (Meaning that there were 4 present).
      The OG Atlantia was destroyed by 1000+ Cylon Raiders (Dozens of which made suicide runs detonating Solonite explosives and firing their Laser Cannons within the Flight Pods. They attempted to do the same to Galactica in "Fire in Space" and actually succeeded in setting fire to it's Flight Pod and severely damaged it's bridge.

    I recon they just reused the Galactica digital model without editing it to fully cover it in armour, as Galactica appeared in Blood and Chrome.

    Everyone is sad for the Columbia, but can you imagine the death that occurred on the sneak attack from the pilot movie? Battlestars, support ships, shipyards and the cities... all gone in one day.

      The Scorpia shipyard scene in Razor, there'd be tens, hundreds of thousands killed in that sequence. I mean you see at least one Jupiter Class Battlestar blown to smithereens, at least one Berserk escort carrier. Another one worth noting is the miniseries when Helo and Boomer are adrift in the Raptor, there's a Jupiter Class broken in two, burning, some internal detonation.

    when the columbia got destroyed did that leave the Galactica being the lead ship of it's class left?

      +Epsilon nah, Galactica only became the lead ship of it's class (Battlestar is the class) after Pegasus died.Adama previously captained Battelstar Valkyrie before almost killing Bulldog to avoid cylon detection.

      +adam vavlitis no. battlestar is a spaceship class. Galactica and 11 others were the first battlestars including Columbia, Archeron and Athena. each representing a colony. Galactica was Caprica. They were called the Galactica class although Galactica was not the first of it's class. Creators didn't set the lore fully so people call them Galactica class.
      what we know is, there were 12 original galactica class battlestars. 9 of them was destroyed at the war. however, after the war, they constructed more of this class of ships with newer technology.
      Pegasus was a Mercury class Battlestar, newer and much bigger then the original 12 battlestars. we don't know how many Mercury class were there. It has to be at least two(Mercury and Pegasus).
      Valkyrie class battlestars were smaller escort ships. After the end of the first cylon war, colonies didn't want to invest much in the big wardogs like galactica and pegasus so they used valkyrie class battlestars more. they are like the destroyers of the WW2 and today.
      Galactica became lead ship of it's class aster the fall of the colonies. There were at least 2 other galactica class ships at the initial assault on the miniseries. One was on the defense around one of the planets. other was docked at the scorpion shipyard, where pegasus was the only survivor.
      You can find all these info at battlestarwiki. cheers.

      Galactica is also called a Jupiter class, I believe as Battlestar Atlantia (which was another jupiter class) was the flagship of the fleet

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually Jupiter Class, were not the first battlestars, they were just the biggest and most powerful at the time of the first Cylon war, there were also the Artemis Class which were smaller and came before the Jupiter class and the Orion Class, which were light Battlestars

      @@Livewire1119 I was referring to the re-use of Galactica footage from the Miniseries. A scene where the Galactica is being pummeled by Missiles is reused for the scene with Columbia.

    The only earth military planes that can do moves close to what I saw the Viper do in atmosphere is the SU35 and the F22 Rapter, both don't have the speed of a Viper. Maybe an SR-71, but it can't move like that.

    so i was perusing the comments and i noticed there was a fairly certain cause of death for the colombia. though there was still people arguing for the other. the cause is simple, it was a magazine detonation, not a reactor detonation. why, because theres several chunks of the battlestar left after she detonates plus the primary det is centered under the topside guns. if it was a reactor it would have been further back and im rusty on my show knowledge but i would assume the ship runs on a form of nuclear power or other fusion power, which if it had detonated would probably vaporized most of the ship and would be further back due to the engines and engine room more then likely being towards the rear.

    Real world equivalent would be fighter pilots engaged in combat at sea and seeing their home Carrier sinking. I dont know the fuel range of Navy fighters but depending on how far from land they are losing their Carrier could be a death sentence.
