BSG Battlestar Columbia and Young Admiral Adama
Scene from the movie Battlestar Galactica Razor, where Young Admiral Adama takes part one of the last missions of the Cylon war 41 years ago.

I know this is a very old thread, but I wanted to point out a possible fault in the Jupiter Class Battlestar, and the Columbia at large. Did you see where the fire was? It was aft of the normal amidship Colonial Seal (Speculation is that it's a relief of Nike, the Goddess of Victory with her wings out). The fire implies that Columbia's armor was compromised near their primary Tylium tanks. Tylium (Possibly liquid hydrogen or another yet undiscovered element) is extremely volatile and the sheer heat of fires around it, is known to cause Tylium to become unstable and explode. What was puzzling, is that Columbia did not attempt an FTL jump to clear out from the Cylon assault. Instead they seemed to opt to perhaps provide firepower to the other ships as a task force. Or the other vessels (Piscon or Atlantia) were damaged and unable to continue firing, so Columbia took the damage and insured the survival of the remaining ships. A truly brave end. But could you have imagined if Columbia tried to jump and failed? Wrecked suddenly shifted from one state to another?
If you saw the old series, the Cylons would always try to ram the landing bays. Viper munitions and fuel lines ran from those directly to the heart of the ships reserve fuel tanks. There is an episode "Fire in Space" where Galactica suffers catastrophic internal fire from just such an attack. Now, looking at the Schematics of the battlestar (Mercury class) and this clip, we can see that the fuel storage is running along the length of the ship from the head to about the mid section and also aft to just behind the head. We can also see that the nuclear missile launchers are in close proximity. The head of the ship is where the crews general quarters are. Along the top of the ship are the FTL 1 and FTL 2 core and sink drives and that was where the main focus of the attack seemed to be, the upper surface. Likely those were knocked out to prevent escape. Judging by the detonation, it was munitions likely cause by a catastrophic breach of the fuel lines. At 1:09 you can see heavy missile strike hitting the landing bay and midships right on the main Tylium storage tanks. Remember the old series? Why Tylium caught fire, it took out a planet (Carilon)
Does anybody know how many years is this supposed to be after Blood and Chrome? (Haven’t seen either films yet)
"Columbia's gone, oh my gods Columbia's gone, gods, I got two bandits turning tail, Husker pursuing"
They don't really focus on it, but it is interesting that Columbia goes down, in part, because Adama is too cocky. He abandons Columbia to chase down a single fighter while more missiles continue to bombard the ship. Could he have saved her? No. But he did abandon a superior task because he felt he had to destroy the fighter.
Adama went after the Raider following Colombia's destruction.
@alasdairgardiner2313 I'm talking about 1:05 where, while he is given permission to, Adama runs after a Raider onstead of sticking with the ship. She most likely would have gone down anyway, but I think the Viper pilots, including Adama were focused more on splashing bogeys than protecting their ships.
Just realised that these old Cylon fighters are firing lazers? Seems like the new Cylons use hard rounds.
I don't understand. How can Columbia's defenses be down? Every turret and Anti-Air gun is manually operated by a crew. You would have to destroy every turret to disable their defenses. Which would mean destroying the ship Even Galactica at the end of the show still had turrets firing even when Galactica was on the verge of being destroyed.
And this scene was followed by one of the most horrifying things that could happen to a human. I'm not going to spoil it but Guantanamo is nothing compared to what the Cylons did to human POWs.
CIC is near the alligator head of the ship, so those screams came from CIC as the ship depressurized and burned, idk though galactica took alot more punishment and never blew up idk what they used
The head also housed the main crew quarters and medical. Its likely a catastrophice fire hit the Tylium fuel tanks and magazine, one detonating the other.
I couldn't imagine the pain and fury Adama had when he heard those screams when Columbia went up. Not even able to make it to any escape pods (if any were available). That's why Adama was so protective of his people and ship. This destruction reminded him that your ship and crew are your responsibility. And to watch an entire Battlestar die with all hands. I can understand the hatred he had for the Cylons. But it was repeated and put to the test decades later. With Saul Tigh. Adam's oldest and dearest friend. Saul's people were the 13th Colony to leave long before the Galeon left Kobol carrying all of humanity. He suffered watching his own version of the Cylons die at the hands of their Centurions. The final five remaining Cylons on a desperate quest to find the Colonies and warn them about the development of Artificial Life. And to find that about your best friend? I'm amazed it didn't send Adama completely over the edge. Adama was a man who walked with the "Shadow of Death" and often called it his only friend.
Edit: As an anecdotal observation I wonder if Columbia went up because of the damage? Or an additional Cylon nuke struck it? Or something even worse? Did Columbia actually attempt despite the damage to jump to FTL? And the sheer shock of it caused Columbia to explode? Part of a battlestar's FTL is near the area Columbia seems to explode.
I guess "Husker" was a more accurate callsign than "Batman". 😏
This is the Blood and Chrome we should have gotten.
I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see a NEW BSG series about how the First Cylon War began. Too bad there are big writers and actors strikes going on in Hollywood (and elsewhere, AFAIK), so now, it could be DECADES before ANY new BSG material comes out of Universal Studios. What a CRYING SHAME!!! 😭
You can play this as commander of the Galactica in the very last mission of Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock.
I love the slow tribute to the original BSG theme.
Anybody else notice that young Adama's are eyes are blue and older Adama's....?
Anyone remember the t.v. series set in the BattleStar Galactica universe where it showed the development and rise of the Cylons wouldn't it have been neat if they did a t.v. series of what happened during the war that lead to rise of the most famous and legendary Battlestar of all time the BattleStar Galactica.
1:33 The music is a somber arrangement of the original Galactica theme. Chilling.
When you hear those scream over the wireless...man, that's chilling. There was a similar scene in "Memphis Bell" when a B-17 loses a tail and the fuselage spins down out of control. Anyway...I remember in "Valley of Darkness" Lee saying that sickbay was a disaster shelter, designed to act as a survival pod in case the ship was lost. It was capable of being sealed off as we saw in the episode. If that ever happened during the first Cylon war they would need Colonial forces to locate and rescue them, but it would be a chance. Just speculation but there could have been survivors from Columbia.
True! I tought of "Memphis Belle" too! :)
Survival would be even more likely if they wore pressure suits in battle, like the Viper pilots.
Yes. That's exactly what I thought of when Columbia exploded.
I have to ask what became of the viper pilots after they lost their battlestar...i hope they were recovered.
I think I saw at least 2 battlestars in space engaging the Cylon basestar. So most likely they probably did get recovered.
@@KuDastardlyyeah I studied the video there was a couple of Battlestars in the background hope those pilots got recovered
finally found the game battlestar galactica deadlock and this is so like the game. lol
I enjoy that Deadlock recreated this scene right up to the detail that, no matter what you did, you couldn't save the Columbia.
I had a hell of a Battlestar fleet for that final mission. I was actually able to save Columbia. I fired every single missile I could from my Battlestars at the two base ships above it And I sent every viper I had to cover Columbia. I actually pulled it off and Columbia was heavily damaged but they were okay...... But then the mission just froze there The story is dependent on Columbia being destroyed. I felt so disappointed. I was hoping that they would have written an alternative script in the mission if you happen to save Columbia and the cylon still do the armistice but you're able to save the ship. I had to restart the mission and let Columbia be destroyed In order to finish the game.
Can't believe the Peacock version of Razor cut this scene out.
If Adamas fighter was shot down here, how did Chief Tyrol and his deck crew find her in a salvage yard? It would’ve been crumpled into pieces upon hitting the ground lol A small plot hole Razor had opened up
To bad they never continued with Blood and Chrome....Would love to see the first Cylon war with Adama as the lead! It needs to happen ASAP! SO SAY WE ALL!!
One of the coolest music cues in the entire series.
Gotta love the adama death glare article.... The comment about husker parachuting down the cylon planet looking really pissed off keeps me laughing to this day,
God damn the music for this - when Adama comes into frame . . . and the next minute is fraking amazing!
Man after the destruction of the Columbia wouldn't it have been ironic that the BattleStar Galactica came to pick up the surviving vipers and they're pilots including it's future commander Adama now that would really have been something.
Adama was based on the Galactica during the war.
Wait a second. The Columbia was defenseless, and the Vipers were told to protect it, but unlike the pilots at the Galactica 4 decades later, Husker and the others go after the Raiders, leaving the ship being hit repeatedly by misiles. They should have focused on stopping those, and maybe they wouldn't had a battlestar less.
No fighter can intercept anti-ship missiles. True then, true today. That’s why our warships have flak screens and CIWS guns, as well as air-defense escort cruisers and destroyers. Columbia’s guns were down so at this point she was defenseless. In atmosphere missiles can go Mach 3. In space they’re under constant acceleration when their engines are lit. No fighter can chase after those.
The Raiders were also hammering away at Colombia as well.
@@andrewnlarsen that is true, but I think they missiles were doing more damage, and at least they should focus on the raiders that were around the ship. Seems to me like the Cylon's strategy was to get the Columbia defenseless by overwhelming their flak barrier with nukes, and distracting the Vipers by baiting them with the Raiders, and it worked.
He should have watched (Bill Bur) No reason to hit a Cylon.
Lucky thing the Cylons didn't figure out how to vife until years later.
Man just like the original series where the fleet consisted of the Galactica and the Columbia where they were all identical ships in this remake it appears the same the Galactica and the Columbia were both Jupiter Class Battlestars.
I hate to say it but with the original Galactica the Battlestar Columbia's destruction happened so fast that the crew didn't even have time to scream and like they say in the series 'May the Lords of Khobol watch over all those poor souls and give them peace' 'SO SAY WE ALL'.
How many people now, this ending scene of the colombia at 1:34 is a great reference to the "Mother and Country" scene from the war-movie "Memphis Belle"? th-cam.com/video/djIvmaYI9LQ/w-d-xo.html
I recon they just reused the Galactica digital model without editing it to fully cover it in armour, as Galactica appeared in Blood and Chrome.
Knowing what these Battlestars can tank/dish out and how many fighters were engaging in succsessful combat I just gotta wonder who fraked this mission up like that?! Losing a Battlestar?! You couldnt win the fight? couldnt jump out before the situation got critical?
It was likely due to the Cylons focusing on the Columbia with a majority of their attacks. Taking out the enemy flagship is a massively effective way to demoralize them.
@@chrisdufresne9359 and also with the Cylon fleet there being far more stronger than they realized.
The show consistently demonstrates how easy it is to lose FTL under fire. It's likely Columbia was a sitting duck with no option of retreat.
Only three Battlestars survived the first Cylon War.
Excellent battle sequence. BSG really shined here.
Our Enemies Are Like This Enemy!
Double 180 was sweet
The only earth military planes that can do moves close to what I saw the Viper do in atmosphere is the SU35 and the F22 Rapter, both don't have the speed of a Viper. Maybe an SR-71, but it can't move like that.
Husker vs Starbuck. I know Adama said that she was a better pilot but what about a better fighter?
Which movie is that? It's not razor. Blood and chrome?
Just love the wide shot showing the 3 battlestars and 2 basestars duking it out.
Still like the old Vipers and old school Cylon Raiders much more than the new ones. But maybe this is about childhood memories.
Original looking cylons, including the raiders and the basestars.... loved this step back in time. The ships DID look cool as hell.
Soooo cool seeing the old-style Vipers and Raiders!!
I like how in the regular show when you see the vipers the paint looks old and worn but in this it looks fresh, nice touch
I always found that final scream of the crew of Columbia quite harrowing. It never really occurs to you when a ship like that blows apart, it’s big enough that people in there will survive for a while after.
Sadly, it’s a bit like the Challenger disaster. Many years later, they tell us that most of the crew survived the blast and were alive most of the way down.
This reminds me of the disaster of the Kursk submarine. 23 crew on board survived initially but couldn't get out and drowned inside.
reminds me of some of the battleships sunk in the attack on pearl harbour, they could hear banging on the hull from surviving crew for days after, sadly they couldn't get to them
@@trymetal95 I know this is late, but.. many were rescued by cutting through the hulls.
Magazine detonation?
Or the Tylium Fuel Lines.
