Unlimited Bike Licensing test in Fuchu, Japan / 府中運転免許試験所 大型二輪コース

  • The Tokyo Police open up the licensing course on Sundays and holidays. It's usually used by people practising for their tests, but occasionally people will use it for general training/practice.
    I took my new bike out to the course to practice my techniques on it, and while I was out there I filmed one of my practice tests. This is the road test for large bikes as administered in Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan.
    NOTE: *This would be a failing test*. I was the only one on the track, and as such was sloppy with safety checks. Also, position within the lane was not necessarily consistent or correct, there are "swollen turns" (don't know what those are called in English) and a bunch of other inexpertly-performed things. I just took out the new bike to get used to performing the low-speed maneuvers on it, and while I was there I figured I would tape myself going through the course in case anybody wanted to see what the test consisted of.

    I was on an absolutely empty closed track practicing to get used to handling a new bike. I wasn't going with the intention of "passing a driving test"; I was going with the intention of practicing maneuvering a bike at low speed that's quite different in handling characteristics from what I learned on.
    There was no traffic to even be careful of; even the checks that I did were from rote memorization rather than safety. I'm sorry that you weren't happy with it.

    You have a good point.. I edited the description to make sure to point out that it wouldn't be a passing test. Thanks for the heads-up about the practice session; I'll call in a bit to book a slot. Any time to get a chance to practice off of public roads is good.

    Thanks a lot for putting this video up. Bought a 100cc 'scooter' and only just realised I don't have the license for it! I'm an idiot. So gotta do this test.....can't believe it would have been a failed test. My confidence has been shot! But at least I know what sort of things I should be practicing. Thanks again, very useful. Oh.....how do you know where you're supposed to go when doing the actual test?!?

    I got my Oogata license on a bike I was comfortable with, not a brand-new bike that I was taking around the course to get used to it.
    You ride a brand-new heavy bike that you're not used to around the course and see how you do.

    If you have a motorcycle endorsement in your home country and are just converting your license, the test is a little easier. The hardest part is memorizing the course. There's no time requirement for the shaloam or balance beam. You also don't have to do the bumpy road section. They are very strict. Over exaggerate when you check for traffic, etc.

    This is pretty cool I wish we had a similar course at the DMV here in the US. The only thing that I can even think of that is remotely similar is the Motorcycle Safety Course in California which if you take you don't have to take the DMV test. This probably means people in Japan can actually drive their motorcycles unlike some people I know.

    I just came from Fuchu today. If I understood correctly the day has changed to Saturdays, the cost is Y2,200 and you can't use your own bike. And you need to make an appointment for a time slot to come practice.
    Have things changed in the year since this video was made?

  • @DrewHamilton

    No, but in that case you already have a mid-class bike license; you are just demonstrating to the police that you can handle a larger bike.

  • @Pillokun

    I don't want to criticise anyone but to me it seems that you get the bike license if you just memorise the track course instead of showing that you can handle the bike itself. I mean, all I see is how the person shows if he/she can control the bike in slow speeds, but where is the biker supposed to show if he is capable of handing the bike in higher speeds and if he can perform an emergency high speeds. I really hope there is more to this test then this expensive looking test course that does nothing for the rider. And does the test taker get to show if he can ride the bike in traffic after this or do I get the bike license after a mere 6 min on this little test track?
    This is how the course is in Sweden: First you have to pass a small safety check, like go through the electric system, or the brakes, drive train, what ever the person in charge says you should check. Then it is on to the low speed test where you should not put down your feet at 2-4 km/h. Then it is time for the fast part where you have accelerate to 50km/H and ride slalom between cones, turn around and then slalom back between the cones and then you make a controlled stop. Then you take a emergency brake test from 70 and then from 90 km/h. When you passed all those small tests it is time to show of how well you can ride on the streets in traffic for about 30 min. If passed then you are a happy biker, poor but a happy biker :)
    I am not saying that Swedes do it better, not at all. Because it is expensive and quite hard but I do hope that what you showed is not the entire examine test. Cheers :D

      +Pillokun obeying the law here in Japan is very important. they teach you how to drive properly and how to obey the law, so you can avoid accident by showing off that you can drive fast. you being careful on the road, not just saves you from any harm.. but other people too.

      The test where the candidate needs to ride on the balance beam, and maintain it for 10 secs (7 secs in Malaysia, though) is good enough to demonstrate the candidate's bike handling skills.
      However, I still think that Japanese riding test is a kinda easy if compare with the Malaysian one.

    Do they charge anything to run through the course?
    Also, do they have practice bikes available (for a fee or otherwise)?
    I'm studying for a kogata license right now, and there's a frighteningly small amount of information, and most people tell you spend the 400,000 for a driving school, but I'm not in a position to spend that much for a driving school.
    Thank you.

      I don't think there are any place that you can practice for free of charge.
      If you have a car license, you will pay school about JPY90,000 - JPY120,000 to get a motor bike license that allows you to ride up to 400cc.
      In that case you need to be able to speak Japanese.
      The school fee for Kogata, which you can ride not bigger than 125cc, makes about JPY30,000 difference.
      The school I went in Tokyo costs are ;
      If you don't have car license,
      For kogata
      JPY143,000
      For 400cc
      JPY174,500
      If you have a car license,
      For kogata
      JPY80,000
      For 400cc
      JPY112,000
      I live in Tokyo and costs seem to be quite different depends on where you live.

    Just a quick question as I have my test in a few days. Hopefully this gets answered by then. Is this the exact course that everyone has to follow? The map with the poorly drawn line that I was given from the licensing center is a bit different from the course you have in the video. Which should I follow??

    • @DrewHamilton
      @DrewHamilton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the course at the time, for unlimited bikes, at Fuchu. But that was nearly 4 years ago, so it may have changed. Better go with what they told you. What are the differences?

    • @denicefrieden1
      @denicefrieden1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drew thanks for the speedy response! My test is tomorrow so I am scrambling for info. Here is what they gave me at the license center last month for my test. It doesn't even say when is what test (like uphill start or emergency stop) or anything like that!
      Here is the link:
      i.imgur.com/4YfcRAk.jpg
      I believe the route you did was this one?
      www.ne.jp/asahi/clark/zzr/bike/license/course.jpg

      JustFrieden Oh, I see. They've written "gaimen kirikae" (foreign license conversion) at the top of your paper. My understanding is that the foreign license conversion test is different from the regular one, so I guess that explains the difference.

    • @DrewHamilton
      @DrewHamilton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, so what they want you to do is pull out, go around the South end of the course ("pigeon avoidance"), turn right at the big road, through the traffic light, and then make a right into the "technique" section (balance beam, slalom, and bumpy road, same way I did in the video). Two rights out of the bumpy road and then into the crank course. Right out of the crank course and then into the S-shaped curve. 3 left
      out of the S-shaped curve, through the traffic light, then right, past pigeon avoidance, into emergency stop, then left to go up and then down the hill, then left from the stop sign at the bottom of the hill into the starting area. Seems like you don't have uphill start, because there aren't cones going that way, though I'm not sure.

    • @DrewHamilton
      @DrewHamilton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Complete guess at this point but since you don't have "railway crossing" on your test and since "uphill start" is not marked at all, it's possible that they don't want you to do the emergency stop either.

    当時はCB750だったが、見た目中型と同じだが感覚は全然違うんだよな。だからコースを覚えていてもどこかでミスって何回も落ちる。いかに中型が軽くて乗りやすいかが分かる。当時は中免でも大型乗らしてもらってコースで練習できる神練習場があったから有り難かったし、合格を得るために真剣に練習するから運転技術も向上させてもらいました。スラロームで2足や半クラなんて邪道な技は使わなかったね。結果合格するまで教習所より時間と費用は高くついたが(悲)。一発試験試験という名前で早く安く取れるわけではなく、結局教習所の方が早くて安く取れる結果になる場合もあることは言える試験
