Hey Seekers - A previous edit of this episode had an error of showing an Aztec calendar when talking about Mayan astronomy. We have since made a change to remove that error and we apologize for not catching that before publish. Thank all of you for flagging it with us and keeping us honest.

Can you edit to fix the solar system @ 2:03 onward? Planets are orbiting in the wrong direction and at the wrong relative speeds (e.g. looks like Saturn is travelling faster than Jupiter). I get that it's an orrery, so I'm not bothered by the distances/sizes.

Use the moon and or sun trail (zodiac -- i.e "animal trial") in your locale; that would be towards the south in the N hemi (e.g out of your back door after dinner).
Everything "barrels" overhead from east (rising sun) to west.
"Light pollution" makes this difficult in some ways BUT easier in others (fewer stars to overwhelm you). Very local trees too can box you in.
When you see a bright star on that trail that DOESN'T twinkle, that's a planet. Use the net to or an astronomy prog (stellarium celestia) to investigate what it was.
Learn more as the zodiac constellations (and their neighbors) rise in the east in your locale seasonally (e.g out of your back door after dinner).

The Signs of the Zodiac are entirely different from the Constellations that lie on the ecliptic. The 12 Signs are 30° slices of the ecliptic starting from the Vernal Equinox Point (where the ecliptic and the celestial equator meet). This Ecliptic Coordinate System was established some two thousand years ago by Ptolemy in Alexandria and is still used today. The Signs were named after the constellations as a legacy from the past. However, it was known at the time of inception that the Signs of the Zodiac (which corresponded with the Earth’s seasons) would gradually move out of alignment with the Constellations due to the precession of the Equinox. So, the Signs of the Zodiac are a mathematical construct. The position, shape, distance and size of the Constellations that lie on the ecliptic including Ophiuchus are not relevant to the Signs of the Zodiac.

We have learned so much since then, and it all started with OBSERVING the world and sky around us, day and night.

Farmers knows the environment and natural science better than anyone,, they are always connected to her in some form or other .physically ,mentally ,spiritually. I think they create life from what they have by working according to nature and give it to someone who doesn't even know how he is able to have it because money is easy to get than a food .

The necessity of having zodiac patterns in the sky allows us to communicate over a wide distance of time and space the location of stars and how they have moved through the sky over over the millennia. Constellations and having an intimate knowledge of their movement through the sky throughout the year facilitated not only Marine navigation it also aided in terrestrial navigation when geographical renderings were either incomplete or nonexistant.

We only observe the universe one moment at a time. But what if the actual size of the universe is the sum of it's size at every moment from beginning to end? The universe that exists now is not the same universe that existed a second ago. Like a stack of photos we only see one at a time but the whole stack makes a movie. Maybe our experience of time is us moving between universes?
Upon further consideration in this framework you wouldn't necessarily need a third dimension of space it would arise as a consequence of moving through a multiverse.

Cnstellations tells us our position in the solar system. So based on the constellations, how do I know which position I am in the solar system. Like if I see Orion, that means I'm in one particular position in the system. What is that position is that ?

Yes - like the other comments, I can understand seeing the swan in cygnus, for example, but 3 or 4 stars in a line making a goat or ram, they must have been on the mescaline or something in those days lol.

You are quite wrong about that BECAUSE "ram" means "Aries" in Latin and Aries♈ sign is associated with "Sheep"🐏 symbol and whereas "goat"🐐 is associated with "Capricorn"♑ symbol SO,before you say such nonsense the next time to sound cool do some REAL research,GOOGLE IS FREE!!!!

Stupid question: the constellations are NOT visible during the day, so how do ancient astronomer knew that the sun was crossing them?

OK so I may sound orthodox but listen a person seeing my hand marks explains everything written in my kundli(what we call astronomical birth chart in Hinduism) and both of them explains about every vital/minor event that has happened and will happen in my life. That made me believe In all these stuffs despite being an atheist earlier. I suggest you guys to explore :)))

Ancient astrological data may better support more recent research if retrospectively corrected for astronomic progression(?), even though it may remain relatively more challenging to be considered a true "science" since applying the scientific-method and statistical analysis to sufficient study populations for double-blind or triple-blind relationships between causes and effects (or even analyze via standardized epidemiological protocols) , not to mention factoring in considerations such as: gender, spaceweather, anthropogenic EMF, altitude, genetic neuropsychologic predispositions, cultural & socioeconomic influences, relocation to distant geographic regions, and distant sources of regional activity (e.g.: dynamics of an attack by a country under the influence of a remote astrological environment), Etc..
Nevertheless, I consider it important to contine learning, researching, and recording as much astrological data as possible,
    esp as
    A.I. & supercomputing
(& on-going detection of characterizations of previously unknown energies, such as quantum entanglement, dark matter, Etc.) developments are accelerating the scientific communities' abilities to randomly search & compare databases for objectively recognizing patterns
and may eventually discover that the locations of astral bodies in space-time may indeed influence biological organisms (formation of organelles, cells, tissues, organs and neural networks of organisms, and also growth, maintenance, and functions going forward).
Insofar as our brain and nervous system as well as our endocrine system/hormones have been proven to influence perceptions, feelings, and personality,
    why rule out
that planetary influences (via their own gravity, direct and indirect interactions w/gravitational fields of other astral bodies, effects on any number of wave forms &/or various combinations of collective flows/streams travelling through and around our solar system, emission of sound waves &/or light rays (Etc.)?
In general, I believe that science benefits from as much collaboration between fields of study as possible because:
the perspectives from which various knowledge can be obtained when considering any event of interest seem nearly limitless, the interconnectedness of events necessarily impacts our interpretation of artificially isolated events when applying the knowledge acquired to the cosmos beyond a region of controlled conditions, and that the growing total body of knowledge across recorded human history has surpassed the human brain's ability to even retain no less cross reference, and I believe that pseudosciences incl Astrology should be included for consideration since no theories are relied upon as factual truths unless & until proven, Etc.

Star gazing here in Southern Minnesota is horrible. The only constellations I can see with any real clarity are Orion and Sirius.
Even with my small amateur telescope, I could barely see the comet that passed by last year.

Let's get this straight. The zodiacal signs were laid out as reference points by Ptolemy (and possibly Hipparchus). The SIGNS DO NOT correspond equally with the constellations and Ptolemy knew that. It was a way of dividing up the sky to refer to the parts of the sky. It was a reference system, such we might use declinations and righ ascensions today. Because a lot of astronomy enthusiasts don't know about that bit of history, they make some false allegations. NOW the starting point of the Zodiac was at the equinoctial point or vernal point, where the ecliptic meets the celestial equator; when the sun is there it marks the first day of spring. Now of course there is the precession of the equinox changes this point slowly over time. The constellation on the background does not remain forever in Aries as it did around the time of Ptolemy. Now it is in Pisces. The question is do you continue to call the first 30 degrees of the sky (Aries), the so-called "tropical zodiac" or do you call it by the actual constellation on the vernal point (Pisces, as of now in 2023), the so-called sidereal zodiac? For some it's arbitary, for others it's very important. The point is that a lot of astronomy enthusiasts make the mistake of believing that the zodiac was intended to correspond exactly with the constellations and that they were just ignorant for doing as they did. I've tried to make clear here that the ancient astronomers/astrologers used the zodiac as reference points. Ptolemy certainly did not have the knowledge we possess today, but he was no dummy.
