    THIS is what has kept my head above water, through stillbirth, preemies, twins, and a few other crises. THIS is what has kept me from the complete overwhelm, even when family were too sick or had their hands too full to help me. Good clothes, a made bed, clean dishes and clean laundry are all still attainable! THIS and a whole lot of Jesus!

    For the people who have made random rude comments, like, "be an adult".. may you never suffer from depression, or a chronic autoimmune disease, or debilitating grief from the loss of a loved one.. all of which I have over the last 2 years. May you be always perfect and non judgmental as you live your shiny lives in your spotless homes. And may you, perhaps, check on a friend or loved one who is less perfect than you, and offer them your help and support to raise themselves out of the mire of their circumstances to a level at which you feel more comfortable associating with them.
    Now, if you'll excuse me, it's nearly 5pm, and I really should drag myself into the shower.

    Thanks for these reminders. FlyLady pretty much saved my life once when I was laid off from my job and became very depressed. The "shine your sink" mantra really helped me start on the road to recovery because I don't have a dishwasher (I am the dishwasher!) and a clean, shiny sink meant that I was doing something that required standing up, moving my arms, using my eyes to see something I did result in an improvement, etc. I was so depressed that just standing up and doing SOMETHING positive ran counter to my super-negative internal monologue ("I'm useless. I'm a failure. What's the point of getting out of bed." etc.) A shiny sink lead to clean counter-tops lead to a clean stove-top, lead to taking out the kitchen trash/recycling, lead to taking out the bathroom and desk-area trash/recycling, and pretty soon I was cleaning the bathroom, changing my sheets, etc. etc. etc. I still have lots of "projects" around the house, but when things start to fall apart I always go back to shining my sink and the rest falls into place.

      Single Mom with two kids... and I sincerely appreciate this advice, as well. I felt so overwhelmed last night, I almost had a breakdown. BUT, I realized that's basically the adult version of a tantrum... I decided to just calm down/regroup 😂😂

    My greatest housekeeping trick is to set a timer. It's motivating. When I'm dreading a task, I set a timer for 10 or 15 or 20 minutes, and knowing that I will release myself from that task when the timer goes off makes me much more willing to start it. If it isn't finished, I don't care. It's progress.
    This also makes it more like a game: It's amazing how much speedy progress you can make on various things in a mere 5 minutes, or ten...
    I used to not start things, because being a perfectionist, I"d dread what I was going to put myself through. Now I own the time, and the task does not own me. I never let my whole day get shot on drudge anymore. I just set a timer several times per day, interspersed with more pleasant activities. Not only is this more pleasant, but in the long run, more gets done.

    Thanks, great list so props to your mother and you for sharing. Since my wife passed away I've struggled with her former household duties as we shared them. I did the yard, carport, bathrooms, laundry and vehicle maintenance and she did the kitchen, bedrooms, living room and Bill's. I will try this and hope to get better organized.

    First time watching your channel, I watched the before and after a year. I’m so proud of you for having the courage to put yourself out there. Life as a mother isn’t what we think it will be, and if there’s some underlying conditions even worse. I am 63 years old, I was a very active and clean house like a fairy 🧚‍♀️ tiptoeing cleaning and organizing even my daughter’s house with three boys. At 53 my life changed and was dx with a rare autoimmune disease and these diseases do not come alone, it brought another one and devastation. The damage was so bad I couldn’t even get up from the toilet by myself (embarrassing) I was a very strong woman and very active.
    Now I have noticed I have more than I can pick up. I know I can do it a little at a time with your encouragement and positive attitude I am going to start. I always knew to do a little at a time but you know how it goes.
    I’m very proud of your advances, and how your positive attitude and truth is empowering.

    1. Make the bed right away
    2. Put on decent clothes in the am
    3. Empty dish washer as early as possible
    4. Do one small load of laundry every day and put the clean clothes away
    5. Start dish washer at the end of the day
    6. Clean out/wipe the kitchen sink

    Hi. Tumbled upon your channel about a month ago, when I needed it the most. Your video of doing FlyLady for a year and showing then and now videos really have gave me an inspiration to start doing flylady system. I realized that I am not the only one who is in a big mess since I am suffering from depression from past 3 yrs, and watching your old videos and seeing your journey gives me hope that maybe someday I’ll also be able to have a clean home and clear life. Right now I am on and off of the baby steps, still haven’t reached hot spots. But your videos definitely motivate me a lot. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Maybe I can start vlogging about my journey too someday, who knows😅

    For me, the Flylady steps didn't work (though I'm super happy for you and anyone else that it does work for!) because I've suffered from so many (generally undiagnosed) issues like ADHD, autism, and severe depression along with poverty, bad workplace, and single-motherhood. It may seem obvious to everyone else, but I had so little energy and I was so literal that by the time I made my bed, got dressed and shined my sink I was exhausted and nothing else got done. I would take the dishes out of the sink, shine it up nice and proper, then let the dishes get all crusty in stacks by the sink because I wasn't bright enough to recognize what was really meant was "DO THE DISHES".
    Doing the dishes is the key, not the shiny sink. Making the bed doesn't actually matter at all, for me, compared to keeping up with laundry. Decluttering was the skill I really needed to learn, to stop piles of detritus from drifting like snow into corners and tables and anywhere I would spend any time. Just learning to get trash thrown away and stuff put back in its place, and learning to cull extra things that didn't fit in the spaces I had to store stuff.
    I'm sure most people wouldn't understand how anyone could be as dense as I was. I'm not a stupid person generally. But the "Zone Cleaning" didn't make sense to me, because I was out with dust rags and spray cleaner trying to polish around heaps of clutter, feeling defeated, and not comprehending how anyone ever figured this stuff out.
    So for me, the steps to a nice house are:
    1. Empty your dishwasher, and wash all your dishes (including pots and stuff) every day.
    2. Keep up with laundry. Do it as often as you have a full load to do. Don't buy/wear clothes that need special care or ironing. Never ever let clothes hit the floor, bed, or a chair. Either wear it, wash it, or hang it. If you can't bother to hang/fold it, then just live out of your dresser and accept wrinkles as normal.
    3. Declutter daily. Throw away trash, put away stuff, get rid of anything you cannot put away neatly. Even two minutes per day, per room is better than nothing.
    4. Clean. Vacuum, spray, dust, etc. at least weekly, AFTER you've tidied a space. ALWAYS tidy before cleaning. If you run out of energy and can't clean, a friend, child, or even a maid can clean surfaces for you, but they cannot handle your clutter! You're the one who knows where stuff goes, but others can help with actual grunge once a space is tidied up.
    This is the order of operations that works for me. Once I got this correct, my house began spiraling upwards towards clean, rather than downwards towards chaos. AFTER I learned how to keep my house clean and ticking along with less effort, then I sometimes decided it was worth it to make my bed, if I had time and felt like it. It matters when company is coming, I guess. Otherwise my bed gets made when I change my sheets, and that's enough for me.

    I have a chronic health condition that can make task overwhelming. Everyday for years though I have made my beds in the morning, gotten dressed for the day, done a load of laundry and made sure my kitchen is cleaned before going to bed at night. Simple goals but it makes you feel wonderful to know something has been accomplished. Then any other jobs that get done is as we say in Louisiana pure "Lagniappe" / bonus . Easy way to lift your spirits from morning to night.

    That bed trick is so valuable - it's the biggest surface area in the room, so if it looks messy, the whole room is effected. If it's neat and tidy, the whole room looks better - and it's so inviting at bedtime after a long day. Thanks for the video and tips!

    I came across this video at the perfect time in my life. I will definitely start your 6 tips today. Being home with chronic pain and my 4 year old granddaughter it's really difficult some days to get my act together and yes I've been spending my days in PJs. I'm so overwhelmed with life thank you for this great advice. Fingers crossed it works me me! Thank you again.

      I understand! I have Fibromyalgia and Degenerative Disc Disease for pain and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that makes me even more fatigued. It's just me in my house, but I'm overwhelmed. It's ridiculous what a mess my house is. I feel like I'm 56 years old and am still living like a teenager. I'm disgusted with myself, ashamed and embarrassed. But I can only start where I am right now, so start I will with these six daily tasks. Best of luck to you!

      @@awarenessvillage I understand as I'm 68 with Fibromyalgia , Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Degenerative Disc, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes. It's just me and 2 dogs except for 2 weeks a year that I keep 2 of my grandchildren who live out of state. I have accumulated so much stuff, too. I have donated several carloads of clothes and household stuff, but still have a ton. I go through paper stuff once a week, do laundry twice a week (I wash couch covers as my dogs get on the couch), grocery shop once a week, and cook 2-3 times a week except breakfast daily. It is a struggle. Retired after 43 years - many working both full time and 2 part-time jobs. I stay in my pjs several times a week.

      Just do what you can. I don't think this lady has any chronic health problems that led to her mess. She just didn't know how to do it. I myself have the goal of having a shower and getting dressed before I get my son up for school and having the washing up done before he leaves for school. I find if I get motivated early I am less likely to slob around all day.

    I was about 10 yrs old (1981?) when I heard if you do something 15 times in a row then it will form a habit. Sure enough I made my bed 15 days in a row and haven't missed hardly any days since then.

    One suggestion - My family and I don't wear our "outside shoes" in the house. We wear slippers or "house shoes" that are only worn inside. Keeps the house cleaner + I vacuum and wash the floors less often, which gives me more time to do laundry! Ha!

    I am SO happy I found your channel. Years ago, my husband and I were at a garage sale and I came across a nice binder. I bought it and when I got it home I realized there was a whole flylady control journal in there (although I didn't know what flylady was at the time) lol! I had forgotten all about it, but about a year ago I found someone called Flylady Kat on YT, and I started flylady too! I had the perfectionism problem, where I was just paralyzed and overwhelmed by perfectionism, so if I didn't have time to do it perfectly, I just wouldn't do it. My house was a disaster. I can't believe how much just doing the daily routines has done for my house and my peace of mind. It's funny when you let go of needing things perfect, and are just happy with progress, how much easier everything is. I totally didn't realize how much less I would stress about the house if I just picked up after myself. It seems like such a simple concept, but I had that "why bother?" mentality. Now, I take care of my home because I have witnessed how much it's worth it. It's so nice to wake up to a clean kitchen, where it's easy for my kids to make there lunch and for me to make them breakfast. I swear I even save money by doing it; for example, I don't have to go out and buy my kids breakfast, because my kitchen is always clean enough to cook in. It just has this trickling effect into every aspect of your life. I've taken so much more pride in the way I look now, and I don't feel embarassed to have anyone over, so my kids have more play dates. It's definitely helped with the "mom guilt." Anyway, sorry for the long comment. All that to say: keep doing what you're doing, because it's such an inspiration!

      Wow! Described my situation perfectly. I also suffer the same issue. If not done right then forget it. That is why I don't enlist the help of my husband and my 17yr old, because they don't do it "right". 😟 I have realised I am always redoing the dishwasher to make it "right". Just re-doing stuff they did, when I could just let it go and do something else. I am starting to change, because my house is a mess and with 3 kids, age 5, 4, and 1, this summer is gonna be CRAZY!!! Your post has helped me see that it is my fault because I want it done my way and perfect and refuse toget help if not done my way. Definitely planning on decluttering, hopefully half our house, and enlisting help this summer. We will have a nice clean house by 2020!! That is my goal. Hopefully I can hit it sooner, but I need to be practical and understand that this summer the kids will not clean, more like mess it up a bit, but they also need to have fun...so yeah... goal is for Jan 2020!!

    Oh my gosh, I love you! I clicked on this link while trying to get out from under the mess in my 2-bedroom apartment! I have 2 kids and I'm a teacher and your description of the kitchen and laundry and your mom helping you with the laundry and cleaning the house is my life right now.     Girl, I am so with you on this!! Have started and re-started the Flylady system several times (over several years). Still convinced this is the method for me despite my inability to actually get totally under control. And I have my own small, very similar, list of "must have done" items that keeps it all ticking nicely, even if everything else collapses on any given day. You go, young lady! Celebrate each and every little win you achieve. I'll virtually keep cheering you on!

    My tip is that when you change the sheets on a bed, it’s a good idea to whip through the whole bedroom dusting and cleaning so the whole bedroom is perfect later that day with nice clean sheets.

    Great video, very helpful. Seems easy but for people with busy lives that value other things, house cleaning can be overwhelming. I remember years ago, I asked a friend of mine how they kept such a clean house and she laughted at me and said, “you just do it!” I later found out she had a weekly made and she didn’t work and her kids weren’t allowed to eat in the kitchen, only outside.

    Wow, you blew me out.. When u said that bit about "trying to sort yr way thru a pile of blankets every night to get into bed" - you don't Know how much that sounds like meeeeeee! I don't know if Il EVER be able to change because I'm 60 now & I left home at 15 & became a street person/gypsy type soul who hitchhiked across the country, never knowing how to run a household. I've had ADD like FOREVERRRRR & I used to be so compulsive about cleaning in my early 20s & then I changed & went the complete other way.. I would also likr to get properly dressed every morning. Iv only read up to no 2 but Il listen to all of ur tips to try & sort my home out.. I really have to do this becoZ it's like a hoarders nest now & it's really not a proper home. I can't walk around inside & can't invite people to visit as there's nowhere to sit plus I'm embarrassed! That's so bad hey...
    BTW, who is FLYLADY you mentioned? Is she on youtube? Maybe I can look her up to Becoz honestly, I just don't kno how 2do this on my own, as I don't know where to start.

      Maritta Hobbs I am the exact same way! I can manage to keep my kitchen spotless for a week and living room and the next week, I’m like how did this get so messy and out of order? I’ve never been lazy but I’m beginning to think I’m lazy at times.

    I would add that 15 minutes a day of tidying really helps. Meaning a brief sweep through the house to put objects away is also helpful. One last tip is not wearing shoes in the house. Buy a pair of house shoes. You will be amazed how much cleaner your floors stay.

    I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and I just love you! You have such great energy and are so honest about the challenges you have faced. For the past two weeks I have shined my sink and rebooted my laundry everyday. Because I am a morning person, I actually have been able to stick to doing my dishes when I load the dishwasher in the morning and shine my sink before I go to work. Then first thing when I get home I unload the dishwasher - and I run it no matter how small the load,for the same reason you do small loads of laundry. When I used to try to do run he dishwasher at night, I would get too sleepy and wouldn’t bother. You have really inspired me and I am so grateful. Thank you!

    I put a load of dishes in the dishes at night, then in the morning I play the "beat the kettle" game. while I wait for the kettle to boil I try to put all the dishes away before it finishes boiling.

      I do instant coffee and I have to rush the emptying of the dishwasher to the 2minutes of my microwave. Most of the time I manage it.

    Just found this and I just want to say...THANK YOU for being a normal human being!!! I have always done exactly these same bad habits my entire life. I'm trying to change these terrible habits now (age 27) and it's so nice to see someone like me succeed - you give me hope!!

    Thank you so much for your reply Stephanie. I wanted to share something as I watch this again because I'm sharing with my parents and friends.
    I do these steps everyday now thank you so much!! I have been washing one load of laundry a day for almost one month now- Mon- bedding sheets and pillow cases, Tues- Hubby's laundry, Wed-2 Kid's laundry as one load, Thurs-My laundry, Fri-All Towels, Comforters- once a month and no laundry on Sat and Sun. What I find that helps me get the clothes folded and put away everyday is starting my load as early as possible after i wake up in the morning, then after drying that load, it's a game changer for me, to not unload clothes from dryer into a basket and fold somewhere else (we do not have the luxury of a big laundry room and table to fold clothes on top of) like the -bedroom to fold clothes on top of our bed(my kids find me at that exact time when I'm folding the last few things and they start jumping on the bed messing up my folded clothes) or folding in -living room as I sit comfortably watching tv trying to find a spot on the arm rest and cushions to pile the folded clothes on to before my kids want to play house and try to help me but end up messing up what I've folded or the -dining room table seemed to be a good spot too but that's when my kids want a snack of course, to be near me to mess up my folded clothes.... the kids get into it and I get distracted and never finish and end up putting all clothes back into the dryer to refresh and I restart it over and over sometimes until the next day (waste of energy). So what I do now is I take clothes out one by one and fold my laundry right on top of the washer and dryer (tip*when it's hubby's clothes, I take all his shirts and pants out and snap the wrinkles out and drape over dryer door until I can start folding them so that they don't wrinkle sitting while I fold underwear and socks... those can be folded last), using it as a laundry room table. Laundry gets folded immediately and ready to put away. I know I have to put it away right away because I need to open washer for a new load the next morning and to fold the morning laundry on top of washer and dryer again lol I love it. Thank you Stephanie for making these cleaning videos with your take on the Fly lady system that have motivated me so much to maintain a much cleaner home and to share the tips that help me with you and anyone else that come across my comments.     Great tips!!! Thank You, I love this video! Add to #6. Shine sink & wipe counters and sweep or vacuum all crumbs up.
    Here's a good tip, Lucky #7 lol (I struggle with this, having toddlers.) #7.Take a shower at the kids afternoon nap time or at night after dinner before or after husband takes his shower to watch kids, before starting dishwasher, after everyone is showered and bathed so it doesn't use up hot water. We take showers every night to wash the dirt and sweat from the entire day and you'll be clean laying in a clean bed instead of making bed dirty by laying in it without a shower and at least blow dry hair at night or wear shower cap if not washing hair. Then you're ready for the whole next morning after you brush hair, teeth ans wash face.
    #8 I also give everyone their vitamins at night after potty, wash hands, brush teeth and pj's. So it's like a little candy snack before bed. When I used to give in morning, the kids wanted more and didn't want to eat breakfast so I find this works for me.

    I do laundry every two days usually. I do hardwood floors Monday vacuum carpet Tuesdays dust on Wednesday or Thursday and bathrooms on Friday, so I have free weekend. I like doing as much as possible chore-wise, so my wife can relax.

    I love the flylady. I think even the ppl on TH-cam & marla herself have days where their houses get messy. They just don't show it. The key is that most if the time, it's presentable & ur not buried in chaos. Also if u have an "off" day or 2, it's easy to pick back up where u left off

    Great tips!! I literally do every single one! But I also find getting the mail every day and dealing with it to be important too. I have a little file thing on my counter, has a slot for bills to be paid , another one for flyers and invitations I need. Junk mail gets thrown out immediately. I do my bills and balancing every Tuesday , so honestly I don’t even open my bills daily , just file them and I’ll deal with them Tuesday . It keeps daily paper completely under control!

    It all begins with the shiny sink. Keeping it that way makes the kitchen clean, I don’t have a dish washer so after each meal I do the dishes and put them away( finish the process) same with laundry ( finish the process). I’ve been doing fly lady modified to meet my family’s needs, but I think you hit the key points. It does make a difference. Go you!

    More or less followed this all my married life until my health went south. But having these 6 things you mentioned as a priority helps with maintenance even if I have to reduce each thing into doable segments according to available energy. Staying focused on results also helps keep my mind off of myself and keeps me useful. It was encouraging to hear others have struggled and conquered the necessary chores of life and let's me show my family how much I love them. Thanks.

    I stumbled on your channel today and enjoyed listening to a few of your videos. I like the 6 habits you shared 1) make your bed every day 2) get dressed to shoes and in proper clothes 3) empty the dishwasher first thing in the a.m. so that dirty dishes can go in there as you dirty them 4) do one small load of laundry every day so you make sure you fold the clothes and put it all away 5) start the dishwasher at the end of the day 6) shine your sink after clearing it out.

      Teach small children 3 things they can do independently every day. 1. Make their bed. 2. Pick up toys
      3. Put clothes where they go (dirty in hamper and clean in dresser.

      @Kaththee1 All the best with the tips. As for wearing shoes in the house, I can't wear the outside shoes in the house both because of germs but also for ease of wear. Usually guests to my house take off their shoes or they ask if they should take them off.

    I appreciate you so much Steph! I'm a new homeowner (finally!) and starting the Fly Lady system is making the adjustment easier. :-)
    I think I figured out something: At first, "Shine your sink" seemed like a random task to me, but I wonder if it's not a kind of beachhead or baseline - like, ground that you have conquered that, if everything else slips away, at least the sink gets cleaned every day. Fly Lady was so smart to choose the kitchen sink for this, since just about everyone has one and it's a task that doesn't need to take long. It's also a very visible thing, so you can feel a sense of accomplishment frequently during the day.

    I have started with a quick tidying, „shining my sink“ (which includes cleaning the counters in my kitchen) and starting the dishwasher at night, a load of laundry whenever possible (no dryer here), swish & swipe every day I work, work forces me to get dressed, and vacuuming at least twice a week.
    This has made a higher difference!
    Now I just need to make the time to declutter more than my closet… but that’s not easy with a full time job and a small child.

    42 years of bad habits I am trying to change. I’ve always been bad (to the same extent as you). It’s really hard, and I’ve always wished that organizing came naturally to me. I never know where to start because it’s so overwhelming. This system does really help!

    great tips! if I can only add that, you're actually supposed to make your bed after it airs out for a bit from your sweat and body heat. I try to wait at least a half an hour before making my bed so that the body he doesn't become stagnant and spoil my mattress.

    Hi, I just found your channel. I agree with most of what you say, but one thing that was a game changer for me (also a slob by nature) was doing laundry all at once. I also follow slob comes clean, (who also started with fly lady), and she suggested this because it keeps you from forgetting loads in the washer (a constant struggle for me). But the real game changer to this, to prevent the laundry MOUNTAIN, was not changing over the laundry from washer to dryer until everything from the last load is put away. Very counter intuitive, but it totally works for those of us who have great intentions but terrible follow thru. Thx for all your tips. I'll be watching all your videos!

    I am happy that I do this already. I used to struggle having a clean house. Now, I pick up as I go. I save the deep cleaning for my days off when I stay at home. My husband and I love living in a clean house.

    The small load of laundry is an awesome tip. I have been doing this for several years and it really only takes less than 5 minutes to fold and put away. Also, I highly recommend running the DW every night even if the DW is not what we would consider full. Just do it. :)
    There are areas of my house that are still in chaos but 15m a day will get it there!

    I began the FlyLady system in 2004 when I started raising my two grandchildren. I needed to survive! Along with FlyLady, I downsized and simplified. I don't think it would work without decluttering and minimalizing. I wish I had known all this when I raised my four kids...lol! Raising children is very hard work, but it's the most important job in the world! Prayers and hugs to you.❤️

    Dishes and laundry should be kept up daily....don't let anything build up or it becomes a huge task and you're more likely to procrastinate.....clean as you go and it won't get behind! Do a 2 minute pick up in each room....put things where they belong so you can find them again. Pick one room each week to deep clean and it makes all the difference in having a clean house!

    I enjoy her talking, not too fast and calm. I do most these things, and I always try to do the one touch system also. Everything has a place, when you use it put it back. I do not allow clutter to grow. I still haven't fully cleaned out my closet's of clothes I don't wear. I'm one of those who is always trying to lose 10 pounds to fit into this and that. Small frequent laundry loads for sure, I wash, dry and fold on the close dryer lid right from dyer. Then take it to were it belongs and put it away. Also encouraging you children to wear things more than once, unless it is really dirty. I do a nightly swoop through the house and straighten the pillows, put anything away that is out and wake up to a clean house. One major chore a day plus pick up. Using Clorox wipes save time.

    flylady says to make your bed immediately, but I always open it, turn off the heating and air the room, and bedding, windows wide open, for 5 minutes...the freshness of the morning air is just magic!

      I read somewhere years ago, to leave the bed unmade for at least an HOUR in order to give time for everything to evaporate, especially if a person has allergies.
      People sweat 24 hours a day. However, most of the time it is a microscopic amount and not noticeable. Those little bits of sweat can get built up in the bedding and mattress.

      My mother attended Sacred Heart Abbey in NC in the late 1930s.
      She said the nursing students were instructed to fold back their bedding and they only made the beds after breakfast which worked out to a little over an hour later. Of course air and sun freshens everything.

    I think this is good advice. Adjust according to your needs. I was a stay at home mom for years with 4 children spaced 2 years apart. You learn quickly to keep up if you want any semblance of order!

      I live in Yorkshire, UK and we have thing called the 'rammel drawer'...most cultures have something like it, that place you shove things to get them out of sight. Only problem is you can never find anything once it goes in, lol.

    GREAT tips!!! However, that laudry tip is pretty detrimental energy/water/soap/money-wise. To prevent clothes from accumulating, what I do everyday is that I either sort the clothes (to create load piles -- usually on Sundays), then everyday I need to either wash or fold 1 load. This way it creates a rotation and I don't waste resources and money. Time-wise it's the same because you only do 1 task or the other on a given day.

    I had a large family and a huge to-do list. Also not a morning person. I would write down a list of chores for the day but would start with simple things that had to be done anyway like get up, make coffee, really anything that I had to do before I got to the real chores. it gave me such a psychological boost and a sense of accomplishment to cross things off.

    A lot of people would never say that they left dirty dishes in the sink for 2 days or that their laundry piled up and they didn't know clean from dirty WELL this has certainly happened in my life my husband used to say that most people have baskets of dirty clothes l had baskets of clean clothes which was true
    My friend said one reason they put her mother in law in a nursing home was because she would fall asleep in her clothes and wear them the next day and I thought doesn't everybody do that sometimes? Just remember ladies to learn to stay on task That was the hardest thing for me to learn
    THE FOLLOW THRU
    WASH CLOTHES/ PUT AWAY
    WASH DISHES/PUT AWAY
    CLEAR TABLE/WIPE IT OFF
    I was a BIG starter of things !!
    I had to learn THE FOLLOW THRU 💜💚
    Do what makes you and your family happy
    you are not your made-up face
    you are not the clothes you put on If there's something else that makes you happy which would be maybe polish your nails or set an hour and read a book be kind to yourself YOU are teaching your children to take time for themselves to regroup
    l never learned that as a child
    l never once remember my mother taking time for herself Our home was clean always in order but l never really knew my mother we never really talked
    but the house was clean
    YOU DO NOT need to worry about THE JONES or u will never be happy
    a clean home is wonderful but l have learned as a grandparent So is baking cookies or popping popcorn watching a movie and falling asleep with your grandchildren
    DO NOT get so caught up you miss it. My daughters had friends that loved to be here because my daughters were allowed to sit on there beds! Bake cookies leave cookie crumbs until the next day laugh dance in the kitchen. Once in awhile life will just happen
    It needs to
    l promise if u do these things they will never remember cookie
    crumbs or over night dishes in the sink They will they will remember a home not just a house. Balance is important
    Just know to really leave things undone is only allowed if u have the flu 😀 OR you will find yourself back to the over whelmed Twilight Zone🤯

    The biggest thing I do is after I use something, I put it back where it belongs. Sounds simple but it saves time later. I don’t do laundry every day. A small load takes too much water & energy. I save things until I have a full load. Always put things away after washing them. Fold towels and put away.

      @@beverleyfrendo9448 I don't know about original commenter, but many people don't have their own washing machine. :) I am one person, and have to share with the entire apartment complex, and it costs money every time. We have to reserve the times (and since there is few, it can be difficult to get one after work/in weekends, since this is the times everyone is going for). So some of us have to 'save up'. :)

    I’m blessed to be able to stay at home, we are empty nesters. I also do my own yard work because my husband works hard everyday. I have always done this since day one of our marriage (41 years). Laundry is my favorite thing to do hanging out on the clothes line is a dream so fresh and crisp.

    Congratulations on a year of success. As soon as I get up I make the bed. And before I leave the bedroom I make sure room is picked up.
    I do laundry as I have a load. I would never have a full load daily.
    I dust, vacuum, clean bathrooms once a week. When I vacuum I do the entire house then I follow by dusting entire house. When I mop I do all the floors. I find all doing the same task in every room saves a lot of time.

    A few people have said to air your bed daily- really important. Just make your bed and then fold the doona/blankets down so the sheets air. It still looks neat.

    Wow, I came across your channel by chance and so very glad I did. My situation is a little bit different than your. I recently retired and was working crazy hours plus dealing with multiple major life events for myself and loved ones. Because of that I literally have years worth of getting back on track. Now that I’m retired and my health is finally at a functional level, I can now focus establishing a good neatness routine.
    Just watching your video has helped me so much to know I’m not the only one.

    My mom sent me this. It's awesome but it's a discouraging feeling to watch it. I don't have a dishwasher since moving back into an older house (from an apartment) and I have MS and fibromyalgia, and standing there doing the dishes hurts so bad. This video is honest and amazing but I feel so frustrated watching it.
    When I had a dishwasher I loaded it at night, let it run, emptied it in the morning and filled it through the day, repeat. I miss that SO much! I'm a home maker and my husband works 5 14s so I don't expect him to help at all, nor is he willing to since I stay home. But it's so hard!

    New sub here! I rent a studio apartment, which easily gets or looks messy due to lack of storage. You'd think it's easier to keep clean or that cleanup is quick but really it's always about shifting things around in order to get to dust and dirt. Also no room for a washer or dishwasher so it's all by hand, which is time consuming so I procrastinate. But I have to give in eventually and get it done before it consumes me. Please keep posting and I'll keep watching. And thank you for your honesty.

    Well done. I'm a Fly baby and I have decided that morning and evening routeen is enough. I'm working on menu planning now but the routeens are enough. When I am doing them everything else just happens.

    Fly Lady changed my life!!!! I was so sick and in bed for months at a time. When I was finally able to get out of bed every day I dressed to shoes and I must say that that changed the way I felt when I was at home all day!! I still dress to shoes every day!!

    I totally agree with you... been doing this myself every single day.. little things that you do daily makes a big difference in how you feel throughout the day.. have been doing this deliberately since 3years now since my empty nest syndrome ...it's good to have a routine... I say try it and feel the difference..luv from India

    I love to clean...I make my bed everyday..wash everyday..wash my bathroom floor each day..dust and vacumm each week..Im proud of my condo...and have many nice words about my clean place..but I also been bullied for years about it too....nothing better than going out for the day and coming home to a nice clean place..but Im retired and no young children anymore...sometimes when Im sick I wont make my bed..your videos are wonderful..and Im proud of you too.Cheers!!

    I do 8 things daily. All that you have said, but also a pickup put away (pupa) after I have finished swishing and swiping my bathrooms after I am dressed,

    Better to air sheets a little before you make bed. Also, bath or shower at night so you go to bed clean.

      I've always been a before bed shower person. I don't get going through a day at work or whatever and going to bed without showering.

      Thank you! So many people don’t realize they perspire appr 1 1/2 liters of sweat during sleep. Making your bed immediately after getting up traps the moisture in the sheets creating a bacteria breeding ground. I don’t make my bed before noon since having read that.

    My motto is to "do a little something to move forward". What small or interesting thing can I do in passing by? Empty all the waste baskets into a paper bag. A carpet sweeper down the middle. Empty dish rack. Take plastic off of produce in the fridge. All dishes to the kitchen. ( Hand) wash one type of laundry in the tub and drip dry. Any little thing that moves forward is progress. :)

    Great advice on making the bed first! I had a roommate who advised me not to make the bed. Her philosophy was that "you were only going to get back into it later". Funny, huh? These are all great tips to follow, especially if you are a mom! Kudos to you for overcoming those overwhelming cleaning tasks!

Honestly, there were some girls in the dorm who never made the bed, and one gal even had an old pizza box from a weekend party on top of hers! Lots of "Secret Slobs" out there for you to cure!     Having neither a dishwasher nor a clothes dryer, not completely fitting for me... but I do like to get dishes done before going to bed 💗✨and I notice that making my bed makes a difference in how my room feels. ✨💚 🛏✨... Dressing properly is also a great habit to make. Here it’s unusual to wear outside shoes in the house (I live in Europe), but some clean sneakers is a great idea...💗🌿

      Up until about 10-15 years ago, I rarely knew anyone who allowed shoes to be worn in the house. I have no idea why it has become common in the USA.
      I disinfect my shoes when I get home and before putting them away.
      I wear shoes while doing housework to lessen muscle fatigue, knee/back pain, and therefore enables me to work longer.

    Another big tip for those with a little older kids like 4 and up- teach them to be tidier! My mom taught me @ a young age a few things that I still do now and it's really helped! Like: always rinse the spit or dirty water out of sink out after brushing or washing, if you make a mess in the microwave you wipe it out, if you dirty a dish you rinse it good before putting out in the sink, etc. It really helps to teach your kids (& spouse) these things! If they can play all these games and electronics they can tidy up after themselves! Now I'm not saying they need to be robots but they can put thai clothes in the hamper, rinse they're plates, wipe off the table, etc. It's going to take longer at 1st to show them how to do it correctly or you may still have to go behind them go get it totally clean, but eventually you will he able to tell them to do it and not even have to double check if they did it right and they'll be helping with you with chores every day without you even asking! Another tip I learned from @funcheaporfree is to have a "power hour" where you turn on some music and you and your kids all do chores. It has really increased my son's energy when its chore time and it goes a lot faster.

    I hand wash our dishes after each meal, there is just 2 of us so it is easy. I clean the sink every night along with the disposal. Our bed is made first thing, it make the entire room look great. I clean the bathroom 2-3 times a week. I find it is easier and not so overwhelming if you can do at least one chore a day.

      I have discovered Foaming Bubbles for the bathroom and it is such a great product. My friend who cleans houses for a living turned me on to this great stuff.

    Hello, I just came across your video. I love it! I have been on a role lately of cleaning my house, doing like three loads of dishes everyday, a load or two of laundry, cleaning the counters, sweeping and mopping the floor with my Sweeper Swifter, and let me just tell you it is amazing! If you have company over and there's a little dirt and grime on your floor. I also make my bed. This video is so helpful to get me on more of a better working progress, along with getting my family on this progress as well.😁

    After watching a ton of decluttering videos, this video was suggested to me 😁. I’ve been shining my sink all week.
    I’ve watched a few videos so far and find them useful. One thing that might be good to add is something my mom had me do since I was little. The rule was: never leave a room empty handed. It didn’t have to be big. Sometimes it was just bringing one toy with me when I was going to my room. But if you think about how often you leave a room, it adds up and makes cleaning easier 😁
