Lion Chase at Lebala Camp, Botswana - March 2020

  • 00:00 - Starting out
    06:10 - Roaring Begins
    13:00 - Final Sprint
    Two resident dominant males (Old Gun and Sebastian) chase away three intruders (from nearby Selinda Camp, details below) who have been battling them for territory. Two of the three intruders were limping prior to the chase, and escaped in another direction. The healthy intruder led Old Gun and Sebastian on a long chase over the course of about an hour, covering roughly 2 miles.
    12/22/2020 - it was brought to my attention by Hassan Mohammed that the three intruder males are most likely residents of Selinda Camp, which is a bit to the south of Lebala Camp. They spend their time in between the two areas, and have skirmishes with the Lebala males. See comments below from Hassan for more details. Thank you Hassan!
    1/4/2021 - Why didn't the lions attack the humans? So far this has been the most frequent comment / question. There are several reasons. First, many lions like these are used to, or habituated to, humans. They've grown up with safari trucks watching them from the time they were cubs. But they didn't grow up eating people, so we don't fit their normal idea of food. Some guides have told me that the lions don't recognize people as individuals inside the truck - instead they see the truck as one big blob. I don't completely believe that, I think they do see us in some way (they often look me in the eye). I think they ignore us because they're just not interested. Even so, it's not a good idea to stand up, or move around in such a way that you clearly separate yourself from the truck. Is there some risk involved in being in one of these trucks? Yes definitely, but it's hard to say how much. Throughout Botswana and South Africa there are probably hundreds of trucks just like these going out on morning and evening safari drives, every single day of the year. I don't remember ever hearing about someone being attacked by a lion while in one of these trucks. Finally, the guides are often familiar with particular lions, and they know which ones are calm and which ones aren't. One time I had a guide find tracks of two lions that he knew were aggressive and had charged the trucks in the past, and he told us we would not try to follow them. So you are putting trust in the guides to do their best to keep you safe, while being aware that wildlife is unpredictable and anything could happen.

      @@douglasdeakin7602 I rarely see animals that are very bothered by the vehicles. There is some debate about it though. In a perfect world, yes maybe no humans would be there at all. But in reality, tourism is what makes this land valuable to local governments. If tourism were removed, they'd have to monetize it some other way. So tourism makes it more valuable to keep this land pristine, as opposed to farmland or mines or something.

      @@farzana6676 it's hard to say.. my first ever safari was in South Africa and I loved it. But since then I've gone to Botswana 4 times and I love it even more. The lodges, staff, guides etc are all equal I believe. But there's something about Botswana, especially the okavango delta, that I love. It's more difficult to see rhinos in Botswana though. And Botswana can be somewhat expensive, which is why I usually travel during the low or shoulder seasons. There are some very expensive lodges in south africa as well though. @michaelwillis2295  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VIDEOVISTAVIEW2020 I understand your point. I just realized when you mentioned plan B that I had responded to your other comment about this, but to re-iterate for anyone else who sees it, I don't think there is a plan B so to speak. None of the guards are armed, and we can't win a fight against a lion. So we decide beforehand that these are the chances we're willing to take. We put some trust in the guides to make sure not to bring us near animals they're unfamiliar with and/or that seem aggressive, and we trust the wildlife to do what they've done in the past (ignore us). There are differing opinions on this, for example in Tanzania the safari trucks are enclosed for safety. So it's up to us to decide if we want to go on safari, and if so, will we be willing to go somewhere that has open trucks. For me, I've been on many open trucks in front of lions, and I'm willing to keep going back. :)

      How tho? This only happens when a male is born alone or his brothers are killed. Every male lion would die before joining any group if they have brothers. This guy dont know what he talking about submit only tigers or young male lions submit to there fathers/uncles.

      Yırtıcılar zamanla cipli safaricilere alışıp adapte oluyorlar ama jep ten inip yerde gezerlerse yırtıcılar tehdit olarak algılayıp saldırma olasılıkları yüksektir. Ayni durum Asya da farklı gelişir çünkü kaplanlar herşeyi tehdit olarak algılama potansiyeline sahiptir jep ya da başka bir şeyin üzerinde olmanın önemi yok.

    Hey Mike... Typical behaviour of the lions up in Linyanti... they are bigger prides up there and you often get confrontation.... the video also shows how good the guides have to be in order to keep up with them, much to do with anticipating their movements.... excellent showcase of what can be a normal day in the bush here

    • @michaelwillis2295
      @michaelwillis2295  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Roger! Yes I agree, our guide and tracker, Mayezi and Mr. Moe, both did a great job following them. Many times they were hidden in the dense wooded area, and we were positioned in the correct spot when they emerged. Very good guiding / tracking instincts. And yes, it went from a normal morning just cruising around, to 2 hours of excitement starting when Mayezi heard the first roar in the distance.

      Of course constant battle is necessary. That's Mother Nature maintaining balance. Can you imagine what would happen if all lions just get along. All of prey animals in African soil will be extinct in less than 10 years.

      Yes you're absolutely right it's Allah the Lord the most high the most merciful the greatest and only creator , he has blessed us with life as the children of Adam as. To witness Allah's other creations we are absolutely blessed to see Allah's creations and I think lions were created as a way to teach us men about brotherhood and how if brothers don't stick together they fall, lions live by that and so should humans...

    the uploader tells his mother this is how they behave. They fight each other for territory. It's just like what our ancestors did and what we in fact still do. Think of the entire land mass of the planet being divided into borders that are defended by armies and police forces

    The last lion/human attack I heard about was some poachers! Apparently they tried to trap some lions. It was a bad drought and the lions were starving! The poachers ended up providing a much needed meal for the lions! The guides the next day found parts of them! They weren’t killed for being lions and starving! The poachers kept their distance after that the end!
