@breaking the 4th wall like Actually that's a popular bit of misinformation that's been passed around for years now. In canon, admittedly the older stuff, humanity had a CHANCE on the ground. Whereas space was completely and utterly dominated by the Covenant. For instance, for the majority of the war humans were largely unfamiliar with the Elites. Not because they didn't encounter them but because Elites left next to no survivors in their engagements. Humanity largely fought grunts and Jackals in the early years. Contact Harvest was I believe 1 or 2 out-of-date Brute controlled (but largely manned by grunts & jackals) ships that took the fight to the ground and was a planetary threat. The Fall of Reach shows the Spartans moving through a city that was overtaken by the Covenant. Halo Legends shows the UNSC getting their shit pushed in w/o the aid of Spartans on the ground. The message they were trying to convey was that Humanity was doomed. Even the occasional victory on the ground meant nothing because they would just be glassed from space anyways.

Actually, humans did reasonably well against Covvies on the ground. It was usually fight or die, so they frequently inflicted heavy casualties, and if the war was ground combat only, the UNSC would have badly bloodied the Covenant.
