This is fascinating. I have a king, Sleep Number 5000, bought in 2003 for around $2000. Still using it. I like firm, spouse likes softer so it works for us.
Those identical rips on each side of the foam makes me think that it is worn down and split because that's where a person sits on the side of their mattress. So in a nutshell, Sleep Number beds are an air mattress with a variable pressure electric pump plopped down in a mattress cover with some foam.
I had one of their air beds years ago before they "reinvented" themselves with a new name. Didn't care for it and replaced it. When I pulled it apart the foam inside was rotted and turning to sand.
I bought one in 1999 and LOVED it. It lasted 15-20 years. It was about like the one you tore apart. I have not slept as well since but struggle to pay that kind of cost! And regret the decision almost every single morning. Perhaps I am just getting older too. Do you have a recommendation for an alternative?
I really enjoy seeing the obvious expertise that Spencer brings. That is what so few places have today, they just sell beds etc by volume but know little about the production of their item ( be it beds, refrigerators etc). You are a rare species Spencer, please pass on your knowledge to a younger employee. We need fewer box store " experts" and more Mom and Pop owners like yourself! My wife and I just found your channel today and really have enjoyed your videos ( sorry Joe, did not mean to leave you out of my post, it just seemed like you do the u tube production and Spencer is the bed expert). ;)
I’d love to learn how to make my own mattresses and have a boutique store in Charlotte, NC. Sleep is such a great business. Pillows, sheets, etc. so many products. After researching, It seems the most difficult part is the sewing. I love the idea of a totally natural mattress - quality at a fair price. Everyone wins.
I currently have a sleep number, medium grade mattress that is 2 years old. Loved it at first as my spouse and I have different sleeping styles, so different firmness needs, however after about a year, you can feel the bladder and pipes while sleeping. We both wake up with back pain no matter the setting we choose. You also have to option to turn the responsiveness off so it doesn't adjust to your movements while sleeping so we've tried turning it off to see if we'd sleep better, and nothing helped. Looking into a tempur pedic because were in SC but would love to see a breakdown video of one of their hybrids if you guys get the chance. Appreciate your honesty with the videos!
I had one of the original Sleep Number beds. It was a queen with two bladders. I hated the split in the middle. I was always rolling into that joint. They did change that out for me at no cost to a single bladder. That made it a much nicer bed for me. The foams failed rather quickly. i did replace them and made it last longer but the top padding was not something you could replace and they did not offer that as a service part. Shortly after that my bed was involved in the mold problem they had. The bladders were both covered in black mold. They did replace them but none of the parts ever really fit together correctly after that. The dimensions of the replacement bladders and covers would not fit with the side bolsters and the cover. It just became a huge mess. I got rid of it shortly after that. I do have to say the customer service was about as good as you could get. I never had an air leak but I just could not see spending the money they wanted for a replacement bed especially after I saw what went into them and they cover problems I had.
Maybe I haven't watched enough of the videos or I don't understand the website enough, but I am just wondering if there is some online store where I can look at pricing and buy the mattress, or is this just a local operation that does not ship to places like here in Utah? I'd love to see the mattresses in a store in person, maybe I'll have to take a trip to California to see them. It's refreshing to see the openness and transparency in what you are getting for the money, it sucks that I can't find something like this on a national or local level. I mean yes we have plenty of mattress stores in my town that sell Serta, Purple, Sealy, and the major brands, but I feel like I am not getting my value for the dollar because even if I go lay down on one in a store to try it, I feel like I really don't know what's inside of it, how durable it's going to be, etc... I am a side sleeper that has shoulder pain, and I think I need a mattress that allows my shoulders to sink down into the mattress rather than have it be too firm where I feel like my shoulder is being smashed into my body. However, I fear that if it's too soft, perhaps my back will hurt. So maybe I need a multi-zone mattress? I just don't know and wish I could get a good recommendation.
My wife and I bought a beauty rest black plush and found it to soft now we switched to a serta icomfort luxury firm for support and so my spine would be straight but find pressure points being hit any suggestions
@@darylfortney8081 yeah, they are a hit or a miss. Some people love em, some don’t. Pillows are tough. Thanks for letting us know and commenting and hopefully watching.

Nothing beats Aireloom preferred mattresses.

Very interesting. I love the honesty and cost breakdown. Awesome videos! I wish your shop was in Texas.
What about the motor/compressor/controller?
@@f18a we didn’t cover that, it’s the second sleep number we’ve done but definitely dropped the ball on that

Is there a particular video on what mattresses are recommended?
Whats a good mattress for someone who is around 400lbs ( give or take a few lbs ) and mostly sleep on the back???

Have you opened up a Tempur? If not why?
Ever encountered bed bugs in old mattress teardowns?
A 5k air mattress?
Ordered 2 of your pillows from Amazon. Not a big fan. Very lumpy and flatten out in the middle of the night. Wake up with a sore neck
