  • A walking tour of the Old Quarter was a great way to see Hanoi, my favorite city in Vietnam. I was smack in the middle of all of the hustle and bustle-there were motor scooters everywhere and all types of shops and markets lining the streets.
WARNING: At 4:23 there is a 10 second countdown until a frog is chopped into pieces (like in biology class) in the food market.
0:00 My hotel and surrounding area
0:35 Traffic circle near Hoan Kiem Lake
    0:48 Motor Scooters
1:29 Graphics with Old Quarter facts + figures
    2:03 Local coffee shop
2:22 Beginning of private walking tour
    2:40 Food market tour
4:23 10 second countdown until frog is chopped up
    9:02 Flower market
    9:24 Welding street
    9:41 Altar and funeral street
    10:46 Approaching Beer street
    11:09 Beer Corner/French architecture
11:52 Back to Hoan Kiem Lake area
12:08 The Huc Bridge/Ngoc Son Temple

Andy's Awesome Adventures Mind if I ask how does it compare to ho chi minh city?

Definitely a different feel for me. Hanoi felt more like the authentic Vietnam-more of the old history of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City felt more like a modern city. However, Ho Chi Minh City does have some great French architecture (Opera House, City Hall, Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral) and links to the Vietnam War (War Remnants Museum, Presidential Palace) so it's important to visit both if possible.

Hi Andy, how did you break the language barrier when speaking to the locals? Assuming I walk into those flee markets, is it easy to get the message across in English ??

    • @AndysAwesomeAdventures
      @AndysAwesomeAdventures  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello-I had a local guide with me in Vietnam so he would translate if necessary. There are locals who speak some English, especially in the markets that sell T-shirts, etc. Even without a guide, you can just point to what you want and ask how much.

All the way american narrator's tone of talking is radiating his love of this culture , but at 8:18 he can't help himself not to say "I am getting headache by these honkings!"....he is right....but it seems craziness is universal ..in usa you don't hear these crazy honkings , though you hear pretty too often loud modified mufflers...I love american accent and such people ,but loud mufflers give me headache too!

I like to eat Vietnamese street food but those low stools are a challenge for me being a 100-kg huge guy with knee-cap problems.

That is interesting that so many countries have the tradition of selling some of their food items like spices or beans or like that in tall standing open bags 5:43 ...this tradition is common through many countries all the way from arabs and turkey and middle east and central asia to far east asian countries like vietnam and others...also some latin american countries...I think you never see this tradition in western countries of europe and usa or australia and canada and etc....btw narrator's american accent gives sort of validity to their culture

People with weak stomachs are not my problem. Thats their issue. I can watch a live frog getting chopped up all day. Nothing wrong with these scenes. Im desensitized. Some of us humans crave all kinds of delicacies. This is animal meat for me. I am carnivorous. I love my protein! Frogs yum yum.
