This technique of Minecraft Trompe-l'oeil is just breathtaking. The Season 9 Big Gate was an incredible study of trompe-l'oeil on a (mostly) 2D surface, but managing to integrate it onto not just 3D surfaces but curved non-orthogonals is just… nope, no words for it.
I think there are some builders that could manage to do this technique and find innovative new tricks, but the fact that Bdubs manages to make it in the pursuit of actual art rather than it just being a "tech demo" of materials and placement is just something I've never seen elsewhere. It's not just doing a curve so meticulously as a skill flex, but totally in the service of the architecture.
The title of this video is apt. This manages to be both one of the most technically-adept and one of the most beautiful builds I've seen in Minecraft.

Also when you said this build has no why, a lot of historical structures that have no purpose besides being a monument and still exist because they are just too big to take down. The whole thing about teaching your kids to be proud of themselves - that's so incredibly important. And teaching it to yourself is a really important thing to teach as well - that when you decide to make a change about yourself, it's a process, and it's work, but it's worth it.
Your builds have done so much of that, over the years. Teaching and informing and evolving and being happy with things even when they aren't perfect. And the result is something like this - this absolutely stunning build. If you never make a path, or fix the terrain in the back, that's OK. It doesn't make the build *as it is* any less beautiful. Being happy with where we are in the now is also a skill.
Anyway, this is beautiful, and I'm so glad to have found you as a creator.

I think not having a "why" for this building actually makes it more valuable to me. It adds a sense of mystery or age to the build. Especially since it's so large that it almost looms over the village, it really brings to mind images of buildings that have been around so long they start to become part of the natural world like a hill or a mountain.

It is really inspiring Bdubs, not only the beautiful buildings, but also the experience and imersion you accomplish with what you have to say. Touching.
Amazing build btw, you could paste it into a picture and none would notice it is minecraft.

A year of planning was worth it.
You've made one of the most convincing circles in Minecraft, and it's beautiful.
The stairs top, as-is, looks great with how the terrain drops from it.
As if the center collapsed some time ago and were weathered.

    A few things:
    1. There is a "why" to the building; it's learning new skills and furthering your capacity to practice them.
    2. The compression wasn't bad; the rain is a good mood.
    3. Perhaps the rest of the way up to the tower is a bending, curving and snaking path around the lower parts of the terraforming, up to the more formal staircase.

oh my god, that final shot almost made me cry. Bdubs you've done it again! I would really love to hear more about your process of developing over the last year. Like after you have your idea, what are the next steps you take to try to improve it? Once you've been working on it for a few months, what is it about the build that you still want to change? Do you start with specific goals in mind? Do you discover what you want the build to be like as you make it?

You know one of the things I love about you is you've really mastered your craft, we see this all the time when great writers, painters, musicians create art, they get to a level where they can break the rules. You're at a level, where you break the "rules" within Minecraft. It's really inspiring to see, and what I mean by that is, you don't follow traditional roof designs, circular type of building style or even walls. Rather you are constantly innovating, refining your craft, and learning. It's a beautiful thing to see, there is no best builder in Minecraft, each builder has something unique and beautiful to offer. I just really appreciate the way you create art, I hope you see this comment.

I find the technique of making shadows with the colours of the blocks to be very fascinating. It reminds me of how game developers, to save on computing power, will "bake" shadows in, essentially turning the texture lighter/darker in static areas so that the computer doesn't actually need to calculate shadows on parts of terrain.
For an entrance into your build, I think it would look really cool if there was a giant stair case, but it has long since collapsed, leading to some rubble on the ground in front of the building, to make it feel like it has been there LONG before the player has. Then, you could make a sketchy, mossy pathway going up the side of the mountain, as if many past explorers have since made their own unofficial pathway from their desire to unearth the secrets of this building.
It gives me Dark Souls Anor Londo vibes, which in that game, is like a massive city that really makes you feel like you're taking on much more than you were meant for. Spectacular work Bdubs :)

Ideas for a path and surrounding area: have a once pristine pond in the front and bc the bridge to the door is broken, have a broken bridge strewn across the ground and in the pond. Then an overgrown road leading in a curve around the pillars getting progressively less overgrown into town. The area surrounding the ominous tower could be an old partially abandoned place? Like ‘old town’ or something. An area with not many standing buildings left, which will ensure that the line of sight to the tower stays in tact and impressive as ever. Whatever you decide to do, absolutely AMAZING. The thought you put into design and build choices alone makes you the best builder in my book. I can’t believe it took you a year. I’m glad that you are also using your videos to teach your daughters by extension, about things :) lovely video.

A lot of kids these days are learning from media or each other to shrink themselves and make their accomplishments small, but we can be proud of ourselves while also uplifting others! We don’t have to be sad and unhappy to avoid putting others down, we can lift ourselves up and the ones around us at the same time. Amazing build once again. You mentioned it maybe developing a 'why' as time goes on, and I think it looks like a grand mausoleum. Within the city there are clearly monuments to specific people or events, like the Brothers' Bridge and the tower housing the dragon egg. Maybe this awesome structure is the final resting place of the city's founder, and maybe lesser tombs and graves could dot the cliffside around it, lending a real gothic feel beyond the architectural style like some of FromSoftware's environmental designs throughout the Soulsborne line.
Regardless, you're an inspiration to me and many others, and have been for many years. You truly are the best builder in my heart.

I'm so glad that this series back. What I love about Bdubs, is on top of being an insane talent of this community, he's extremely humble _(Heck, even all the power-hunger he has from Hermitcraft is roleplay and mostly played as a gag)_ and doesn't think of himself as one of the greatest builders which he ABSOLUTELY is. He just knows how to pick a perfect block for any situation... Also, this Tower of Babel-esque building is absolutely out of this world, it's what I'd imagine an ''Eighth ancient wonder of the world'' to look like if it was to be ever constructed.

Love you to death Mr. Dubs. Thank you for another uplifting message.
I just wanted to share quick how I came to your videos. It was covid and I was so depressed. And I started watching and following Hermitcraft as I started playing Minecraft for real to keep in touch with my niece (I had played before but always just as a goof as she and I cowered for a few nights in a hole in the ground). It was such a good time to play on my own, and the Hermitcraft community reminded me of some of the things I had lost touch with. So I started making content, telling more stories, and dreaming of giving others a shmile.
Last year I helped make the Cobblemon Trailer (I planned it and filmed it all but could not have done it alone) and it really filled me with joy. It brought something very meaningful and lovely into my life. And I don't think I'd have made it to that if it weren't for you. I only ended up on the Cobblemon team for building and while I love Snarple and Shovel's work, you taught me to build. I appreciate you and your messages very much. The build is a gorgey, btw

Hey Bdubs. Love the build. I am particularly impressed because it reminds me a lot of impressionism, the way you used colors in non-realistic ways to create the illusion of realism.
I have an idea for the pathway. Making it go straight down would obviously be ugly and way too long.
Instead, I think that you should extend the existing pathway maybe 4-5 blocks more, (a pillar's worth if that makes sense to you)
and you should create an overlooking, balcony thingy area. From that area, you could have a pathway on either side of the balcony going down towards the back (from the balcony towards the build). Then, once they reach the stone they spiral 180 degrees to continue all the way down.
I think that could create a sleek look, and if you don't like the idea of the diverging of pathways you could break symmetry and have a larger balcony that only has one pathway down from one side.
