for anyone asking, Everything is made out of cardboard to capture his depression, as a person who's struggled with mental health issues in the past i find it captures it really well. The fact that life is meaningless and bland is shown by the cardboard makes you empathize with the character as he is struggling with his life. The knitting is red as it really stands out against the brown cardboard to show how it's the only thing that gives his life meaning. This is one of the best shorts I've seen in a long time and it really resonated with me so props to whoever made the set, amazing work!
100% agree - as somone with clinical depression, this was exactly my thought - how appropriate the cardboard was - how it captured the feeling of depression
Aww this was so sweet - they found in each other what they had both been lacking from their dads - the cardboard captures the sense of loneliness & despair - how flat & bland the world is to someone depressed & contemplating both the futility of their own existence and ending a life with no joy or purpose
Great analysis thank you , perhaps you could interpret the cardboard boxes as material goods purchased but those 'goods' are no substitute for the genuine love and care of another which cant be purchased ?
@@deborahkelly1948 oh that's lovely Deborah - what an interesting insight and interpretation - absolutely, I can see that - that's the thing with great short films (any great art in any ceative medium really) - open to interpretation - analysis - personal meaning & depth
Now this, this is art. This spoke to me on a personal level, depression makes my whole life feel gray. The older I get the less "colors" I see in anyone or anything. It is a miserable existence. I feel his pain, and his relief made me feel a bit of relief too
When I thought the end was going to be great tradgty with both the old man and young boy my heart literally broke and I was covering my eyes with my fingers. I turn wrenches for a living and this movie almost made me cry. Awesome work!
As a man who knits and crochets, lives alone and struggles with severe depression this short flick plucks so many strings inside me... Great mini movie. So meaningful
definitely one of the most incredible short films ive ever seen. the parallel between the paper rope and the red thread as they were both pulling tigher had me at the edge of my seat. the cardboard symbolism is so meaningful and the last line ties the story up beautifully
I think people are forgetting that the old man found comfort in the red yarn, and that it's not meant to symbolize pain or that it's the only thing that put meaning in his life. It was the only thing he knew he could go to when he needed something to make him feel better.
Haedyn Black > Like many depressed people with trauma-induced emotional pain, the man had an addiction to numb the pair and forget the trauma -- his was Chocolate Milk, not knitting. The red yarn is not necessarily a logically fallacious, forced-choice, either/or dilemma -- it can be both a symbol and a comforting activity. It is for every individual viewer to choose their own meaning of the story. Peace.
The old man and the boy are the same person. The movie is showing the process of an old person coming at peace with his unhealed inner child. In his bland world filled up with depression, the first meaningfull thing in his life that he could have posibbly done was starting being kind with himself. The little boy that appeared was just his inner voice, trying to help him heal. At first, the man doesnt give him attention. But after that, not only that he tries to find solutions , but he also tries to give some warmth and love to a small boy who was suffering because of his dads' absence. This portrays the old mans' situation, who never healed from the fact that his father was never actually emotionaly there for him. A fact that resulted in a long life depression in the first place. What happens next shows in a symbolical way the fight that goes inside the old mans mind and heart: the boy at first doesnt want to receive the love, because he cannot accept the situation and come at terms with the reality that his dad is just not there for him. This leads to another suicide attempt. In a desperate way, the child inside the old man tries to find a way out and fights for survival. The parallel between the two of them both almost falling and dying is absolutely genius. The suicide will also "kill" the small boy, who is still trying to find a solution to make him believe that life can be meaningfull. That moment ocurrs when he throws the red yarn. This is also symbolical, of course there was no way and no logic in holding the yarn or keeping the yarn in a pocket during a situation like that, so that was the most obvious scene where one could understand the symbolism of the movie. It's the red yarn, which saved his childhood and helped him survive through trauma, it was the red yarn which helped the small boy take the letter and "reconnect" with his father - even in a distorsed way, and the same red yarn that helped the old guy stop the suicide attempt. The fact that he dropped the yarn in the elevator and he ignored the child who wanted to give it back was actually a symbol of his refuse to comunicate with his own inner child. The red yarn could symbolize hope, love (it belonged to his mother and see that a mother was also present in the elevator) or just That thing that makes him continue. It's interesting that he tries to kill himself with the same thing he clinged to, but the moment he stops refusing/denying and opens his heart to the small boy who is giving back his yarn, he basically saves himself and starts healing. As a response to this step, the small unhealed boy finally "expresses" and meets the old man. It's the moment where the old man finally finds himself, learns to be kind to himself, to love himself and lets the inner child heal. They both heal. The movie shows further how they (the "old" self and the "new" self) learn to be at peace together, while they simply continue doing the same things until then, but covered with acts of self-kindness. I find it very interesting that the boy is living upstairs - "above". For me this symbolizes that the pure heart is above the mind full of scarred memories. (p.s. sorry for my english)
Yeah, sorry Sandra but unless you were a writer on this movie, I think you are putting your own interpretations onto this film, J.R.R Tolkien often hated people making his stories allegories for modern times and I can't help but see that pattern in your writing, you are delving too deep into shallow waters, the message is painfully obvious to anyone with half a brain who has lived through it. While your explanation may be intriguing, as an avid reader of both modern and ancient literature, I am wary of people like you who always try to see too much in what is essentially a cut and dry scenario. If you want to think of it this way sure. But I highly doubt that every little detail you described is necessarily what the original writer envisioned. Unless you are the creator of this, I do not think you should be taking such liberties with the overall takeaway. Even musicians do not like defining their music.
