I live on and fish lake ontario exclusively, I've tried alot of Ned heads and I've always preferred the zman heads, I liked them even better when they had an even lighter hook in them, they deffinatly started useing a slightly heavier hook in their original plain ol Ned heads in the last year or 2. There's no reason you need a heavier hook, if you think you do then you need a lighter drag, lighter rod, or just stop putting so much pressure on them. We catch 10+ lb steelhead in heavy current with hooks just as light as those. I feel it will benefit people more to learn to use those lighter hooks than to just go heavier, but that's just my worthless opinion.
@danielfields641 me too, i use Mustad 32746. I still prefer the z-man heads but save a lot of money using my own in spots where I know im going to lose a few. Another benefit of light wire is that you can bend them out of snags and then just bend them back and keep fishing them as long as the point is still sharp.
I’ve suspected for a long time that Ned rig would work great for steelhead. What color do you recommend? Green pumpkin for me all day for bass but steelhead like bright colors so I’m not sure what colors to try first.
Love the Ned, been fishing it for years here in the heartland. Make sure you use the longer Zman hooks when using the Big TRD. I will also take a lighter and heat up the end of the Ned and then flatten it out😉. It gives a ton of action and a different look. Give it a try!
I fished with the weedless zman shroomz jig head for years. Lost a ton of fish, and it hung up constantly in the rocky waters I fish. This year I have switched to a flatlands tackle swinging weedless Ned head. It hardly ever hangs and rarely do I lose a fish. It’s made all the difference in the world.
I've caught 6+ pound fish on a Finesse Shroomz jig head and, I have never had one bend out. In fact, I like that they bend out when you get snagged so you can use them again!
Tyler's vids are excellent. They are loaded with details and relevant information. I appreciate how he emphasizes using simple techniques and not overcomplicating the process
I didn’t have much success fishing in the fall/winter here in Wisconsin on the Milwaukee river and every kayaker was having success using a ned rig. So decided to give it a try and finally had success! Definitely one of my go to’s now along with a rapala!
@@BanksOpenKayakFishing I will definitely invest! Good lookin out! I just got into fishing this summer but was only bank fishing. Now that I absolutely love it I am gonna be investing in a kayak. Any suggestions for a decent deal and setup, preferably with pedals?
@@notblazedfordays9536 I’m selling my feelfree lure with a pod mount motor soon and I’m going with the Native Titan X which is not cheap. Generally a pedal kayak will run you at least 2K. I’d go with reliable brands like Old Town, Native, Hobie etc. The cheaper ones like bkc, mako, hoodoo etc just aren’t worth it because they aren’t made as well and don’t have good warranties on them. You definitely want one with a motor or pedals for the river or you will paddle way more than you will fish.
The big TRD was key for me on Alum smallies this year. Fishing on a mid lake community holes and I was the only guy there catching fish. 100% agree size change is key on our ponds You should pick you up a yak and join us on the ponds this year! Not enough yak content on HQ channel and Ohio lakes are itty bitty making for good yak events.
The Giant TRD absolutely *crushes* in the spring and fall. I Texas-rig them in the PB&J, California Craw and The Deal patterns either as a Ned or Neko rig. Love the channel, bro. Keep up the great work!
Ty: 1 - Owner Blockheads have been my Ned jig since I discovered them years ago. 2 - Mix it up - of course...and not just sizes - HogZ, CrawZ, Mr Twister Ned Ringers - change how it looks from just a 'stick' 3 - Yep - the slower the better...even just toss it and LEAVE it for a while. And 1/16oz is my starter weight. 4 - Something I might have to try - never swam a Ned.
Swimming the ned is a super cheat code. I use a 1/16th oz shroomz hook and a 2.5 inch Zman slim swimz and you can hop it on the bottom with plenty of action. On the other hand you can just fish it like a finesse swimbait and catch em like crazy if the fish are looking for a more active presentation. Sometimes I even fish it kinda like a shaky head where I just drop it in a high % area and wiggle it a for a bit and get tons of bites. It's a secret sauce I've been using to out fish my friends year round lol. (it isn't really a secret, they're just too stubborn to succeed with me)
Yeah buddy! I second the owner hooks.. I also make my own neds with an owner hook and I can confirm that the jig head will get stuck and you will break off before the hook will bend out. I fish tournaments in northern Wisconsin and fish a lot of rock and get hung up... A LOT. Thanks for the content man, your content is some of the best out there!
Great video. Upsizing works and is perfect way to extend the life of used stick baits. I like cutting them to like 4.5”, for whatever reason that length works.
I throw craws, paddle tails , swimin senkos ( paddle tail senko) and just about any soft plastic on a Ned rig… the river fish seem to like it quite a bit… heck catfish seem to like it as well. Not my preferred target. But it’s pretty awesome pulling in 3.5 -5 ft flat head catfish on a Ned rig.
Newer-ish angler here and ive probably caught more on the Ned this past year than other bait. The finesses Ned at that. Idk what it is but it's like they cant resist it.
Great stuff Tyler. Another use for the 6” Ned is a top water follow up bait. Rig it weightless and weedless especially around vegetation!!! Have a safe new year.
I don’t bass fish but use the Z-Man ned hooks for inshore saltwater fishing in a kayak. I’ve caught 28”/10#+ red drum using it. Never had a hook bend out.
I use the super finesse hooks and a 1/32 head but I use a Cashion Icon 7' ml rod, I have caught some giants, several 6+ and 5+ fish and can't remember bending a hook out, when I'm fishing heavier neds I do move up to a medium fast and a stouter hook , as far as changing up, I always get the big TRDs and cut them down to 3.5" or use them full size, another trick is to use the Zman Trick Shotz or the small scented jerk shadz as a ned bait , they are both amazing options
I've had the Ned Rig stuff in my boat for years and seldom used it. For about a month now, I've used it a lot and have had a lot of success. But on my home home lake, which is a highland reservior, the slower I go the more I hang up. So I had to keep it moving in short hops in 48 and colder water.
Couple weeks ago i finally got some small ned worms and jig heads and hvent had much luck. Then i come across videos like this 😂 My poor ass wants to try the craws and bigger neds but dont have the money just yet. Thanks for the videos alot of good information, super pressured where im at so i like to soak up everything i can.
I've started putting epoxy on the bait keepers as they tend to destroy the bait after 1 fish and it seems to extend their life . Next experiment I'll try breaking out the Dremel and grinding them down different lengths to see optimal retention while still keeping them from shredding to quickly.
Have been catching 8-15 lb striper on the zman bed hooks all winter. No need to use a heavier wire but the original ultra light wire heads wouldn’t cut it.
I have a 2 acre pond and really struggled to get bit much in the spring and summer but literally as soon as the leaves fell I have caught them left and right
Hooks usually bend out from lack of penetration. If you don’t get good penetration, most of,if not all pressure is put on the hook point instead of the bend. When the pressure is applied to the bend it will not bend out.
I went to the Owner 1/16 from the z-man 1/10 ounce and noticed that I wasn’t getting hung up on the rocks near as much due to being lighter and a less blocky head also Owner has a bigger and stronger hook in the smaller size.
I read a book by the Berkley lab and they did a study that said bass cannot remember anything longer than 6 months and a lot of them did not remember that long
I use the big TRD all the time at Dale Hollow all the time as deep as 50 to imitate baitfish in the fall. In the spring I use the 1/10 head and yes.....slow!!! That's how you DON'T bend hooks.
Been swimming them before they had a name I swim it more than anything till it touches veggie then snap the body I use pull everything off a 5.5 6th sense hawgwalla the body is a perfect Ned rig body they would sell more if the sold then that way its crazy give it a try
I just make sure to set my drag properly and use nothing bigger then a 10pound braid and have no issues with hooks bending out. Even cuaght 10 pound bowfin with ease and this fish is one of the hardest fighting freshwater fishes you could catch.
too bad no tall sizes. if the sleeve are short or the body of the shirt is short it's a dissapointment. I have too many oversized shirts trying to get coverage I need but it's like wearing a dress.
I love ya Tyler, you've improved my fishing as much as anyone but I cannot let your misinformation stand! Fish don't bend hooks... EVER. If you get a bent hook, most likely your drag is too tight. A properly set drag will never allow a hook to bend, unless you're throwing Ned rigs on a heavy rod with 50 pound braid. Sometimes fish should strip line from your drag... That's what it's for!
You have such a cute puppy dog or teddy bear face 🥺😍. So handsome! I promise that’s a compliment lol. You’re super manly too but adorable. I don’t see a ring on that finger :p

Thank you! It’s been a fun ride
Here in Montana, I always 'fall back' on is the nightcrawler. Of course we don't have but few places to find bass.
Newer-ish angler here and ive probably caught more on the Ned this past year than other bait. The finesses Ned at that. Idk what it is but it's like they cant resist it.
I’m in Alabama on the warrior river and I use a smaller zoom trick worm and do pretty good with it.
Great stuff Tyler. Another use for the 6” Ned is a top water follow up bait. Rig it weightless and weedless especially around vegetation!!! Have a safe new year.
Landed some pretty heavy northern pikes on the Ned Rig, never had an issue with the finesse shroomz.
Caught my PB on a zman ned fished on a 1/16th Charlie Brewer Slider head fished SLOW. 10 -15 ct...twitch..mid season.😊 8+ lb on 6lb test.
I don’t bass fish but use the Z-Man ned hooks for inshore saltwater fishing in a kayak. I’ve caught 28”/10#+ red drum using it. Never had a hook bend out.

If you’re gonna use a magnum worm for instance the gentleman you mentioned in the tourney, do you up the hook size?

Riot Baits Tungsten Panic Button Nedhead uses the same hook that made their Lil’Creeper Mini Football Jig so popular. It doesn’t break or bend out.

How do you fish it in weedy lakes? I can catch every stump, log, snag in any creek, river, lake, no fish.
Have been catching 8-15 lb striper on the zman bed hooks all winter. No need to use a heavier wire but the original ultra light wire heads wouldn’t cut it.
Thanks Ty ,but i heard the opposite that Ned Kehde would swim it close to the bottom
I have found that using the Ned rig as a trailer on a finesse jig gets a lot of bites in cold water.
Yeah, they eat it up around rocks and bluffs
Reins ned heads, Savage gear are my faves hooks, nikko zaza baits, molix, savage gear, zman, bizz baits plastics
Great tip! Question for anyone.... Does everybody only catch and release largemouth bass? I was wondering if they were worth keeping for some lunch👍
Don't let the bass tournament pros see you keep any. But I've deep fried small bass with walleye. And couldn't tell the difference.
Crappie and walleye/sauger are so much better to eat
Anyone have luck with the Zman TRD in the Dark and Stormy color? For largemouth bass
Use the right line and rod for the hook. I usually fish mine on 4 or 5 pound fluorocarbon and don’t bend hooks out.
My man! Much better video title! Giving you a like and comment interaction for this one!!
I love to use a 20th ounce in still condition slight wind 15th ounce and a 10th ounce in windy and gusty conditions
Z-Man also makes a Micro Finesse TRD as well I believe its 1.75” they catch em’ too
I caught the fish in my profile pic on one of the micro tiny ticklerz. 8lb 4 oz

I have a 2 acre pond and really struggled to get bit much in the spring and summer but literally as soon as the leaves fell I have caught them left and right
In what situation would you pick a Ned over a Neko rig, or vice versa?
Hooks usually bend out from lack of penetration. If you don’t get good penetration, most of,if not all pressure is put on the hook point instead of the bend. When the pressure is applied to the bend it will not bend out.

isn't a large ned rig just a shakyhead?
I don't know what it is, but a ned rig is just one of those lures I struggle on.

Loop knot those Neds, makes it impossible for the line to have any influence upon the lures orientation when it hits bottom.

5-10 pound fish aren't bending hooks. Bass fisherman feeling like they need to get the fish airborne on hookset is what bends hooks.
