Great video Steve! Here in southern Brazil, we have been using a similar setup for about 10 years for catching Traíras (Hoplias Malabaricus). The difference is that we don't use a swivel or split ring, just a snap with a weight and hook. It's very practical for changing the weight of the sinkers and the size of the hooks. Keep up the great work! Greetings from Brazil.
Very interesting, love the simplicity! I’ve always been a big 10” plus worm and jig guy but I really like your concept and believe I’ll try it with some smaller 4-6” worms on some of our East Texas waters. Tip of the hat to ya!
I just found your channel about a week ago and I must be subscribed to 50 plus bass fishing channels by now but yours is hands down the best channel. The content and the way its presented is so helpful for anyone from beginner to advanced angler I believe.
I came across this technique in one of your previous videos and decided to give it a try. It worked like a charm! I've been using it for a month now and have seen excellent results.
You described the southern of my home lakes with that mucky bottom. The northern lake is very woody. This should work in both lakes. Can’t wait to try it.
Good luck with it! Lots of mucky lake beds around here too. The summer boat traffic helps some cleaning areas off with their boat wakes, but not quite ready for all that traffic to hit the water though.

I love your channel and website Steve! I bought all of the components and tried out this rig yesterday in a local pond. The normal ned head jig would always catch the slime, algae, green muck etc. from the bottom on the retrieve. This rig really does minimize the debris pickup, it is amazing! I also caught a Bass! 😁 Keep up the great work Steve!
I need to try this setup Steve! I fish a lot of laydowns and sometimes I want a smaller presentation. This looks like it would be deadly! I might try this on a small TRD craw to see how it does. Thanks Steve. I hope you and your family are well.
Awesome rig Steve! I love JDM techniques! This is kinda a mix between the Tokyo rig and a finesse ned rig Texas rigging the ned plastic on a EWG hook is so cool! Thanks for your awesome videos!
You covered this very well. Since my home lake has a lot of weeds I've been using this system for about 5 years. I reserve the jigheads for Erie. One other hook you may want to try are the Zappu RPZ Punch Shot hooks. They don't make them as small as the Varivas but they use a ring with a hook. You can use any ringed dropshot weight with them. Thanks.
Nice rig Steve, and as always the underwater view makes it great! Looks like a super short Tokyo rig. I found the pre-built Tokyo wire, swivel, split ring pre-made on the asian supplier sites and amazon at great prices, with 6inch wires. I use them to make all kinds of custom configs of length, weight and hook. I'll be adding the supper short w/ a football weight for my rock climbing in or NW Texas lakes after looking at this. Ive even added on the wire a few crimped on round splitshot to get very light weight w/ the swivel action and a floating micro bait.... get's it done!
I rigged a few this evening with the components on hand. It will be great to go from seach to clean-up finesse with just the change of a soft plastic. The kids and I love the bungee jumper by the way.
That is a really great setup. I've cobbled together something similar using a round drop shot weight, but it isn't nearly as compact or as efficient. As someone who fishes lakes where ned rigs are little more than an invitation to frustration, I am seriously going to give this a go.
Pretty cool rig. I recently used the new VMC swinging ned rig heads rigged weedless and it served a very similar purpose and worked well. I like that you can easily change weights with this rig I might have to try it sometime
Awesome video captain, never really gotten into Ned rig. I've always been using dropshot style with the weight right near the hook. Does the same damage. Love the grenade weight.
Yeah, me too. I only really use a ned rig for redfish and flounder in saltwater when I am fishing a sand bottom. This is perfect for the vegged out ponds I normally fish.
I made myself a couple of these, and let me tell you, it works like a boss. I made up different size weights that can also clip on and off. Here in South Africa, the weights you use are not available. Thanks for a great lure tip

@@somewhereinsd362 lol I was just screwing with you from one fisherman to the next! I live in east Texas and we get absolutely hammered at times with rain and the wind is a killer and totally understand staying home unless we’re tournament fishing!
Question - what if I just threw a Zman TRD on a small EWG, tie it on without the ring or swivel, and put a split shot the tag end maybe a quarter inch away from the knot? I understand the ability of the weight and hook to move freely on the ring on the Jig Rig may be part of the advantage there, but I'm usually of the mindset that less termina tackle is better. Do you tex-pose the hook? I set up one of these rigs to try and found that the elaztech held onto the hook point so much that it may make a good hookset difficult. Thoughts?
The hooks I used came from this site: www.varivas.fishing/product/rock_on-ring-gritter-hook/ If you want just rings, this site doesn't have any that I have seen, but about any split ring should work.

The slightly larger size ned head, texas rig instead of straight jig head rig, don't come all the way through with the point. TRD's are soft enough to allow hook set. Just slightly harder swing to make sure
No, I sure didn't. It looks like it is a bit bent out a tiny bit. I have used them a lot, so I'm guessing it is getting about the end of the life on that one. Thanks for watching!
There are some great techniques from there! I'm working on an another Tokyo rig video. Hope to have it out soon. First time I fished it I was super impressed.
Don’t you think you’d get a little more action with this setup? I’m going to try this setup but I’m planning on using a 4 maybe even 6” worm and maybe a creature bait.
@@Tomc8030 Yes, that's certainly possible, but my guess is that it would be nominal. I have more confidence with the Z Man EWG offset than any other Ned rig, and I've tried them all. Assuming you're using a soft ned bait that floats, it stands straight up when dragged or hopped across the bottom. I get snagged way less than with a standard open hook setup. I'll try this other method, but a lot is going on. A clip, a hanging weight, and a hook. I try to err on the side of less is more when fishing bass and the EWG ned rig is a simple line to jig, and you're fishing. If you're using a six inch bait perhaps his method might be easier. I typically don't use anything larger than the 4 inch TRD when ned rigging and this works great with the EWG Texas rigged.
Great question, and I had that in the video and edited it out to shorten the video a bit. Basically, I use this one when I want that really small profile instead of a longer shaky setup.
That’s doesnt look good on the fall. Maybe it works for his area/ maybe it works I general. It shouldn’t replace the Ned rig though. It’s very different. You get many hits on a ned rig on the fall. I fish my Ned rigs with a crazy light weight and so it falls super slowly, and that’s what triggers the fish. This b lines to the bottom. Reminds of Neko rig more than it does a Ned rig . Meh to each their own 🤷

Sorry, the 1/0.
Thx Steve you’ve taught me alot over the years. Much appreciated. God Bless
Great video…but why not just use a Ned EWG hook???
I agree! No one responded to this. It seems a lot simpler (and cheaper) to me.
You most definitely could, and for sure it is a much cheaper option.
Umm what size hook are you using in the video please. Thank you
That one was the 1/0.
The slightly larger size ned head, texas rig instead of straight jig head rig, don't come all the way through with the point. TRD's are soft enough to allow hook set. Just slightly harder swing to make sure
It’s a mini Tokyo rig!
Did you bend that hook out a little on purpose at 0:50 ?
No, I sure didn't. It looks like it is a bit bent out a tiny bit. I have used them a lot, so I'm guessing it is getting about the end of the life on that one. Thanks for watching!
@@SteveRogersOutdoors Yeah i see the hook point is more exposed on this hook compared to most other ewg hooks which is a good thing offcourse!
Interesting setup. It would help greatly if links to the specific equipment talked about in the video were provided though.
I will add them down below in a minute. I forgot to do that. Thank you for letting me know.
You should try a Cheb Rig (Cheburashka). Achieves the same thing with less hardware and cheaper too.
I will have to look that up. Thank you!
Loop knot those Neds!
Tokyo rig is the shit. We been using these for years. Its another technique from japan. Chebruski is another good rig setup too. Cheers.
There are some great techniques from there! I'm working on an another Tokyo rig video. Hope to have it out soon. First time I fished it I was super impressed.
I use somethg just like that in Ireland for perch and pike fishing. It's batter then your ned head.or use chep wh8t with your soft baits killer rig.
Excellent! I hear so many good things about the perch fishing in Ireland. I need to get there someday and give it a try.
@@SteveRogersOutdoors you what to go pike fishing in loch derg 1meter long pike and bigger trout are huge and perch big com on it next mt .
An alternative is with a RYUGI Glide Hanger and use any casting weight you want.
Thanks for sharing this!
Took your advice and bought a pack from tackle warehouse. I don’t like the way it won’t let you slide the bait up and over the eye of the hook.
Jig rig has sense with floating bait, but for not floating ned rig is best rig
I'd sure like to see a creature bait or craw on that!
That would be an awesome setup.
Zman makes weedless jig hook called bullet z works so well best most weedless ned rig hook they make if u haven't tried that one give it a shot
I will. Thank you!
I was thinking of doing this with a zman darters or jerkbait
I think that would be a great rig!
You know they make EWG offset ned rigs so that you can Texas rig the ned worm and not get hung up as much.
Chebu ?
_Tungsten Cheburashka Weights_
I will have to check them out. Thank you!

Yeah I am gonna have to give this a try. I am in Florida and a ned rig isn't ideal. To much vegetation, mud, and timber.
Good luck with it! I really love it for working through vegetation.
What's it called
I have the links in the description for the jig rig components I used for this one. Thanks for watching!
So why not use a shaky head?
Great question, and I had that in the video and edited it out to shorten the video a bit. Basically, I use this one when I want that really small profile instead of a longer shaky setup.
just use Cheburashka, IMO its simpler and better
I think it wont stand up as good, but for most senarios it works just as well.
Would love to find a cheaper weight option
They are pricey. I believe there are some other brands that have much more reasonable clip on weights.
Looks just like a Tokyo rig
It definitely is a really scaled down version of one.
Why not just use the weedless NED head
it look like mini toyto rig
Definitely does. Thanks for watching.
