I swear whoever voiced Ryder was truly made for that role, he sold this character to me and its a shame he never did more voice acting after this game because he was REALLY good.
They didn't plan for him to originally flip with Smoke. That's why in some of the early missions his dialog seems like it don't match with him betraying the Grove later. Also when CJ discovers the Green Sabre that's why he only brings up Smoke.
The only reason that he wasn't was because the voice actor left mid-development. Ryder wasn't originally supposed to die or be a traitor, you can even hear the regret in his voice in the final "Can't stop me" when you have to kill him.
If I remember correctly Ryder wasn't originally going to be killed at Pier 69 but something happened with the voice actor for him so they decided to have him be killed at the Pier. Thats why when he says "You can't stop me" it sounds out of place/reused.
Ryder was definitely one of my favorite characters in SA and was really sad how they kinda wasted him towards the end. Still an amazing character IMO and very glad there's an episode on him. Good stuff.
Kind of sad they clearly did not know what to do with Ryder and just made him betray the gang as a last minute decision. None of what leads up to it makes any sense and when you kill him he doesn't even have unique dialogue, any post Los Santos interaction with Ryder reused dialogue from earlier in the game.
I think if they weren’t going to use him properly after Green Sabre, then they should have had him killed off during the shootout. Would have really made Big Smoke’s betrayal and the poisonous touch Tenpenny has on everything around him all the more devastating to the player.
@@rayvenkman2087 I genuinly think that was the original plan but they backpeddled on it because it probably seemed too anti-climactic??? I dunno, I think their eventual decision is even worse. There aren't many reasons for that to be the case otherwise.
@@JustAdam123 the original plan was that he didn’t flip. He was always gonna be a loyal member of the grove but the voice actor wanted more money than the studio could afford and/or willing to spend, so the rushed ending seems to just give a middle finger to the character and kill him off.

I don't think he was supposed to betray them. His voice actor had issues with Rockstar so they had to do something with him to write him out of the story
I agree. Unlike with Smoke we never get a reason why Ryder betrayed Grove Street nor do we have any hints or build up to it like with Smoke. he’s never even mentioned again like he’s written out the game and he’s CJ’s their childhood friend! his betrayal and death should have definitely affected CJ more especially seeing as he had to do it so the fact it doesn’t kinda makes it seem like it was just haphazardly put into the story
It's a shame Ryder was relegated to an unimportant minion after his betrayal. It just seemed after that, nobody even acknowledges him. Not even Sweet knows about his betrayal since CJ never even mentions anything about Ryder to Sweet at all. Even when it's time to kill him, his death scene was dull and unceremonious, like killing a typical gang member. I also believe that Cesar's claim of Ryder trying to bang Kendl was a huge Ass Pull to make Ryder seem worse since that comment came out of nowhere and there weren't even hints of that allegation at all. All in all, Ryder's betrayal was definitely improvised, and what really happened with his voice actor during the time remains ambiguous. The most believable theory is that MC Eiht was much more busy with music and releasing albums during the period and most likely didn't have time to record more dialogue for the character. A shame, because Ryder was a complex character with wasted potential and was basically tossed into the Dumpster. I feel that if they were going to turn Ryder into a traitor, they should have done it in a way that gives him an important role to the plot and have his actions and motives more lucid. And make his death scene more worthy. Have him play more of a role similar to Bishop from Juice. That would make him more memorable as an antagonist. But just if you want to know, I actually rewrote this game's story showing how Ryder staying with Grove Street can work. You should check it out when you get the chance. BTW, great video, as always. i feel like even though he was betraying the grove, he still had hated people wearing the wrong colors, since you know he was always ready to kill anyone that wasnt wearing green
Ryder taking jabs at CJ was a neat way to show some discontent, but that doesn't mean betrayal. All that backstab stuff seemed hastily made after the fact because of voice actor and company issues with one another. He was kosher until that. I don't know why they went with betrayal, I'd rather Ballas or cops kill him in a shootout at that point. They could still have re-used voice lines for it or done it off screen. Maybe the betrayal did creep in before the fallout a little bit, but it does feel like a later decision and the story changed because of it.
Apparently, they had bigger plans for Ryder, but rockstar had a falling out with the voice actor. So come they ended up just making him betray Grove Street like smoke did
Ryder was better than smoke, if only they didn't have problems with his voice actor he would have been more fleshed out, his missions were actually in helping the grove, also he wasn't actually trying to sleep with kendl just a thing caesar made up
From a story perspective it was just an act dude. He did those things to manipulate CJ. Unlike Smoke, Ryder was too clouded to fear the consequences of his actions. @@justsomeguy747 If you ask me, Ryder was a character thrown straight into the Dumpster. After his betrayal, no one seem to acknowledge him. Not even Sweet, who didn't even know Ryder betrayed him.
Little known info to alot of newer fans of San An. Ryder was supposed to actually stay loyal to C.J., but due to a falling out with the V.A. they scrapped the rest of his recorded lines and turned him in to an antagonist. There are a few things that point towards it too: 1) C.J. doesn't mention Ryder A TALL when the green saber is being pushed out, just Smoke. 2) They didn't give ryder any more lines after that point, and when you chase after him, he just re-uses lines from earlier on.
Ryder should've not been a bad guy. All of his intentions up to the green saber mission were good! Imagine having Ryder as a support character till the final mission? Robbed character.
honestly i feel like Ryder wasn't meant to be a villain in the end, but maybe a double agent, i dunno it just felt so out of character for him to betray the families i could be wrong though, i know he wasn't supposed to die at Pier 69, part of me kinda hopes he was originally going to betray big smoke and try to help CJ again but end up dying in the process
Ryder being Smoke’s crack slave makes sense. He betrayed grove street because he secretly became a crack addict and Smoke promised him more if he did this for him. Ryder digging for holes is him digging for crack he hid. He stayed he laced his weed with PCP but in truth was crack. And the reason he tries to rob a Clunkin Bell for no reason is because it is a effect of the crack he is taking making him have high energy.
Ryder didn't show any disloyalty at first because he originally wasn't supposed to betray CJ and sweet. It was changed because MC Eiht couldn't voice act for Ryder anymore during the making of the game. They changed it last minute
I'd love to see Ryder vs Lamar argument, or just a conversation. They have kinda similar personalities, always trash talking their friends, always trying to be over-the-top OGs. Would be funny af lol
Easily the best character ever created by Rockstar in my opinion. I wish Ryder came in clutch in the ending of the game and proved himself to CJ that he was loyal. But RockstarGames ruined his character. Would’ve loved to see Ryder evolve. I still wish we could’ve played as him in future in GTA SA or even future GTA’s.
Nice Video Bro but could you please tell me the Name of the Beat which Starts at 9:47 Grove street OGs I Know that you sampled it But I heard the Original in GTA san Andreas Voice Characters
Its not sampled, it's a recreation. The track as far as I can tell has no official name but is usually called "Grove Street Theme" or sometimes, "Sweet's theme". Had to remake it by ear, if it appears in the game files as a seperate audio file, I could never find it.
There were many "Ryders" in LA in the 90s. PCP was a acceptable but cocaine and crack wasn't. Even when I was a kid in the late 90s and early 2000s, all the Gz smoked PCP and were way more well off than the crack heads. Crack heads were homeless bums while all the PCP smokers were rydas with houses money cars clothes n hoes. According to the OGs, PCP was either smoked after missions to help ppl cope with the fact that they just killed somebody, or beforehand to suppress the memory of the experience. Some got addicted tho because killing someone has a spiritual effect on you and their brains had been programmed to use PCP to cope. PCP literally makes your brain not work. Iike how we have random thoughts throughout the day, under the influence of PCP you don't have those. Your minds blank. You don't think. It numbs your brain stem
Ryder was my favorite character for some reason I don't know why but I always like to ask character until he betrayed us! Lesson - never trust a Lance in GTA
I don't know if it would totally count, since it's not GTA, but would the Manhunt series be possible? At least James Earl Cash. It's in Carcer City, which is in universe for GTA. It would be HEAVILY difficult to do anybody else in that game, and admittedly, James Earl Cash himself. Perhaps instead of a biography in the traditional sense, it's a discussion of the "video", the Manhunt incident. It might be difficult to frame it in the way these biographies have been going. Really wish the voice actor for Ryder could’ve stayed until the end of the game. His story was supposed to be different. Was never supposed to join forces with smoke.

@@grammysworld5449Ryder could’ve be the one tryna keep the fragments of Grove Street together it makes no sense for him to fall in line under Smoke and you don’t go from beating up teachers for wearing Ballas colors to teaming up with them lol Smoke by all accounts has the traits that could make him a traitor, ambition, money hungry, gluttony, but Ryder does not…
i feel like even though he was betraying the grove, he still had hated people wearing the wrong colors, since you know he was always ready to kill anyone that wasnt wearing green
"You can't stop me!"
- Guinness Walker in a nutshell.
Busta
Also I suggest an auto biography on
Demitri the villain of GTA IV
So come they ended up just making him betray Grove Street like smoke did
Hate rockstar changed Ryder role last minute
16:06 *Leslie Benzies*
Shit, I never realized that.
Mate, I love this channel, keep up the great work!
Damn, in the end Ryder became a busta himself, i wish he could have been more flashed out but i still think he is a pretty good character.
Besides really despite seemingly bonding with Carl while being high, it seems that his opinion of Carl never truly changed. He’s an hypocritical piece of crap and even if he did so to divert suspicion he’s still a treacherous hypocrite. He’s no better than Carl by a long shot.
@@justsomeguy747 Fair criticism I'm not saying he's Reedemable just mentioning he was more likeable then smoke
@@Blackmorerainbowcatch in some ways they are both equally likeable but if you’d look at it from their missions, Ryder is the more likeable one because of his funny attitude and the benefit from these missions to the Grove. Sorry if I was a bit annoying with how I expressed my opinion it’s just my honest opinion on Ryder. Guinness Walker is right. Ryder is a very contradictory dude.
@@justsomeguy747 it's all good, I agree with your viewpoint
@@justsomeguy747 If you ask me, Ryder was a character thrown straight into the Dumpster. After his betrayal, no one seem to acknowledge him. Not even Sweet, who didn't even know Ryder betrayed him.
I haven't been this early since I was born pre mature.
Ah, Ryder, one of the best GTA characters.
wow, neat concept and well made video! will definitely be checking out others!
I've been waiting for this
Another great episode by Guiness Walker!!!!
I appreciate all your videos on the character lore bro
Drug-filled determination is the story of my 2015-2020 XDXD
I can’t wait for some kid in the comments to say *Fun Fact Ryder was based off Eazy E* as if no one knew .. 💀
Ryder is a really great character in San Andreas its a shame that we had to kill him though
Little known info to alot of newer fans of San An. Ryder was supposed to actually stay loyal to C.J., but due to a falling out with the V.A. they scrapped the rest of his recorded lines and turned him in to an antagonist. There are a few things that point towards it too:
1) C.J. doesn't mention Ryder A TALL when the green saber is being pushed out, just Smoke.
2) They didn't give ryder any more lines after that point, and when you chase after him, he just re-uses lines from earlier on.
Ryder should've not been a bad guy. All of his intentions up to the green saber mission were good! Imagine having Ryder as a support character till the final mission?
Robbed character.
Super glad you made a video on Ryder he is my favorite character hands down
Ayyyy let’s go!!!!
Btw they should’ve stuck with the original plan and never made him betray the grove
Hw went to Highschool with CJ. They explained the mission he ask CJ why he didn't graduate
honestly i feel like Ryder wasn't meant to be a villain in the end, but maybe a double agent, i dunno it just felt so out of character for him to betray the families
i could be wrong though, i know he wasn't supposed to die at Pier 69, part of me kinda hopes he was originally going to betray big smoke and try to help CJ again but end up dying in the process
If I'm not mistaken you start the Big Smoke missions after the drive by mission. Maybe Smoke needed to take those guys out to gain more power.
Been waiting for this vid 🔥
Ryder didn't show any disloyalty at first because he originally wasn't supposed to betray CJ and sweet. It was changed because MC Eiht couldn't voice act for Ryder anymore during the making of the game. They changed it last minute
Do a video of the evolution of all Gta weapons & cars!
He died ridin dirty lol
That “Wesley Benzies” whisper was creepy af
I'd love to see Ryder vs Lamar argument, or just a conversation. They have kinda similar personalities, always trash talking their friends, always trying to be over-the-top OGs. Would be funny af lol
I need to be in control of my destiny homie
Fucking awesome content as always, best GTA content I've ever seen
I'd really like to see an episode on Dimitri
Hooray another episode :D
I can’t wait for the episode on dwayne.
Ryder, my favorite Character of GTA! 👏🏻🌴😎 yeeeaah!
Next: Criminal History of Sean "Sweet" Johnson and Cesar Vialpando.
"I know thats you ryder" 🤣🤣🤣
We needed Ryder DLC... too bad about how things turned out.
Would love to see you do Saints Row Bio on characters like Julius Little Benjamin King Johnny Gat etc.
Lol no one ever catches the GTABJ to image blur at 12:09 in the top right corner if anyone's wondering
Uh big smoke was the second in command not rider. He was a lieutenant.
Somebody needs to work on their listening skills I see.
@@TheCriminalHistorian Even before the game big smoke was always the second in command since c.j left.
Ryder was my favorite character for some reason I don't know why but I always like to ask character until he betrayed us! Lesson - never trust a Lance in GTA
You should do Brian Johnson next
Jimmy Hopkins delivers
I don't know if it would totally count, since it's not GTA, but would the Manhunt series be possible? At least James Earl Cash. It's in Carcer City, which is in universe for GTA. It would be HEAVILY difficult to do anybody else in that game, and admittedly, James Earl Cash himself.
Perhaps instead of a biography in the traditional sense, it's a discussion of the "video", the Manhunt incident. It might be difficult to frame it in the way these biographies have been going. But it could also be a look at Valiant Video and what got leaked to the public. An exploration of the world of snuff films in the GTA universe, due to this one video that the journalist managed to bring out, before being put in a psychiatric hospital. I don't know how you'd do that though.
Really wish the voice actor for Ryder could’ve stayed until the end of the game. His story was supposed to be different. Was never supposed to join forces with smoke.
The nicca tried to get cj to smoke wet everytime he was with him solo
Another banger, Ryder was so cool until he wasn’t :(
Man I wish he got more subscriber's
I swear ppl are starting to think these fictional characters are real.
New series idea (GTAA) Grand Theft Auto Automobiles
Busta. Straight busta.
Ryder did not have an alliance with the ballas his voice actor just left before the game was finished
GW don’t f*ckin miss!!!
Good job
Just realized Pooh shiesty is Ryder 😳🤣😂
the green saber never makes much sense to me ryder was never mentioned just big smoke that means this was rockstar beta plans but they were too lazy to change the script and argued with ryder's voice actor rockstar ass solution is let's betray him in instead he is loyal to the gang i think cesar lied about ryder being sweet's sister you can't help but know what sweet or cj do when they know this you saw what cj did on that by the way The death of one of the foremen of a San Fierro construction crew in the mission "Deconstruction", where he is buried alive in cement by CJ. In a porta-potty after it was tipped over by CJ, no less. Because supposedly, he and others were harassing CJ's sister.
take into account that those construction workers only have cj sister after fleet and call a whore and cj reply back so you know what he can do easily with ryder and by the way cesar lied because he wants to cheer cj
What’s whispered at 16:07?
Leslie Bencey
Leslie Benzies. One of the main guys behind GTA up until 5. Ryders friend "LB" is likely a reference to him.
@@TheCriminalHistorian thanks for the the correct spelling because I knew who LB was but on a small scale even though I beat GTA San Andreas 13 times 💯🚫🧢
I really like your videos but I would love to see you cover other games maybe Resident evil silent hill bully red dead red dead 2 read red dead online anything pretty much but especially former mention but I will keep watching anything you do
ryder has on jordan 5's WTF
Love Ryder mainly because after his mission where we beat up the pushers, i can start running them over.. Easy million in the first few hours of play
