Blue Wildebeest Around Letaba & Olifants During The Dry Season, With Animal Calls
The Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), also known as the Brindled Gnu, is a common ungulate species found in the open plains, savannahs and woodlands of the Kruger National Park. The Blue Wildebeest are most common around Orpen, Satara, Olifants, (In the central regions), and then around Crocodile Bridge (In the southern region). They are really a beautiful species of undulate, which is the more scientific word for an animal with hoofs. They technical are not an antelope, but they are often classed as one. It is one of 2 species of Wildebeest found in Southern Africa, the other being the Black Wildebeest, which is a bit smaller. They are animals that form herds, excepts for the males who are solitary most of the time and command a territory.
This video was shot in the Olifants region of the Kruger National Park, and the first piece of footage is somewhat iconic and shows dust being kicked up by the Blue Wildebeest. The Blue Wildebeest's characteristic "Gnuuuuuuu" sound animal call can be heard in the background through this entire video, and is often made when they are walking towards water in large herds. They are otherwise quite silent, except for the occasional snot when they see potential predators.
The Blue Wildebeest is not the smartest mammal, but this is not their fault, they have worms on the brain, that literally eat the brain until these animals go crazy, which normally is around 10-13 years of age. The Blue Wildebeest is still a beautiful animal, and one of my favourites to look at and photograph.
