Burchell's Zebra On The Plains Near Satara - Video With Zebra Animal Call (Equus quagga burchellii)
The Burchell's Zebra (Equus quagga burchellii), affectionately known as the Striped Donkey, is a beautiful ungulate species (Ungulate means an animal that has hooves), and are plentiful in the open areas of the Kruger National Park. They go by a few other names as well, most commonly the Plains Zebra - describing their absolute ideal habitat; the plains of the African bush. The Burchell's Zebra is a favourite prey species of the African Lion, who actively hunt them and use them as a source of food, especially around Orpen and Satara.
Burchell's zebras are a common sight in Kruger National Park, one of Africa's premier wildlife reserves. Here are some interesting facts about them in this particular habitat:
Each zebra has a unique stripe pattern, much like human fingerprints. This distinctiveness aids in identification and recognition among individuals.
Burchell's zebras are social animals and often gather in small family groups known as "harems," consisting of one dominant male, several females, and their offspring. These groups provide protection and support for individual members.
They are adaptable grazers, primarily found in grassland and savanna habitats within the park. They can also be seen near water sources, as they need to drink regularly.
Zebras play a crucial role in the ecosystem as grazers, helping to control grass levels, which in turn influences the habitat for other species, particularly those dependent on grassland ecosystems.
While not true migratory animals like wildebeests or zebras in other parts of Africa, Burchell's zebras in Kruger National Park may undertake seasonal movements in search of food and water, especially during the dry season.
Observing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat is often a highlight of any visit to Kruger National Park, providing visitors with a deeper appreciation for Africa's rich biodiversity.
This Burchell's Zebra video was taken in and around the Satara region of the Kruger National Park. It shows a variety of sightings between Satara Rest Camp and Olifants Rest Camp. In the background of this Burchell's Zebra video, you can hear the characteristic animal call or noise/sound that these Zebra's make. It must be one of the most recognisable sounds of the wildlife world.

As a South African, the Zebra is just not as appreciated as it should be. When you look at them and their brilliant individual patterns you realise how beautifully incredible they are ❤
