Natal Spurfowl Bird Call Video - Early Morning Sounds Of The Bushveld & Kruger Park
This bird call video of the Natal Spurfowl (Pternistis natalensis) was taken over 2 trips in various parts of the Kruger National Park. The Natal Spurfowl is one of my favourite game birds or ground dwelling birds, and I will never forget my mother always used to refer to them as "Squawkers", because of the tremendous noise they made in the early hours of the morning - many times before sunrise. They call this early to basically let other Natal Spurfowl know that they made it through the night and avoided predation, and basically they still own their territory - they are very territorial birds. This video shows the Natal Spurfowl getting g up to their antics in the Kruger bush and in the Kruger National Park rest camps. Their bird call can be heard in the background of this video.
The Natal Spurfowl, scientifically known as Pternistis natalensis, is a striking bird species native to Southern Africa, particularly prevalent in regions like Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. With its vibrant plumage and distinct features, this bird adds a splash of colour to its habitat. The Natal Spurfowl is notable for its intricate courtship rituals, where males engage in elaborate displays to attract mates. These displays often involve puffing up their chest, spreading their wings, and emitting a series of calls, creating a mesmerising spectacle in the wilderness.
In addition to their charismatic courtship behaviours, Natal Spurfowls play a crucial ecological role in their environment. As omnivores, they have a diverse diet consisting of seeds, fruits, insects, and even small vertebrates. Through their foraging habits, they help control insect populations and disperse seeds, contributing to the health and diversity of their ecosystem. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and hunting in some areas, conservation efforts are underway to protect these captivating birds and ensure their continued presence in the wild.
