African Grey Hornbill (Tockus nasutus) Bird Call Video In Letaba Rest Camp
The African Grey Hornbill (Tockus nasutus) is, in my eyes, the 3rd most common Hornbill species in the Kruger National Park. There are 62 species of true Hornbill that are found all over the World, and in the Kruger National Park 6 of these species occur. All the Hornbill species are charming and have their own characters, and the sounds some of them make are remarkable.
The African Grey Hornbill occurs all throughout the Kruger National Park, but I have noticed they seem to be more common in the northern Kruger National Park. The sightings are more common north of Olifants Rest Camp, compared to ht south and central Kruger National Park.
The African Grey Hornbill, a striking bird found in the Kruger National Park, boasts a distinctive appearance marked by its charcoal-grey plumage and a strikingly large bill with a unique casque atop. This casque, which resembles a horn, serves both as a display feature during courtship rituals and as a resonating chamber that amplifies the bird's calls. These birds are often spotted in pairs or small family groups, perched atop trees or flying gracefully between branches, their wings producing a distinctive whooshing sound.
In the Kruger National Park, African Grey Hornbills play a vital role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers. Their diet primarily consists of fruits, insects, and small reptiles, and they are known to regurgitate seeds after consuming fruits, aiding in the dispersal and germination of various plant species throughout the park. Additionally, these birds contribute to insect control, preying on insects that may harm vegetation or cause annoyance to other animals in the ecosystem, thus helping to maintain ecological balance.
Despite their striking appearance and ecological importance, African Grey Hornbills face threats in their natural habitat, including habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities such as deforestation and agricultural expansion. Conservation efforts within the Kruger National Park and surrounding areas aim to mitigate these threats and ensure the continued survival of this iconic species, highlighting the importance of preserving both the bird's habitat and the diverse ecosystem of which it is a part.
This video was taken outside the restaurant at Letaba Rest Camp, and the bird call of the African Grey Hornbill can be heard in the background of this video. I love all Hornbills in the Kruger National Park, but seeing and hearing the African Grey Hornbill is quite special for me.
