Keir Starmer’s winter fuel cut leaves us freezing this Christmas | Times Reports

  • When it snowed a couple of weeks ago and the thermostat in John’s one-bedroom bungalow in Gloucestershire dipped to 10C, the pensioner turned the heating on for the first time this winter.
After just one hour he had to turn it off again because without the winter fuel payment John, 73, and his wife Wenefreda, 57, cannot afford to heat their home this year.
“We just can’t afford to turn it on,” John, a veteran and retired mechanic, said. “It’s either that or we go without food. The other week the thermostat was showing 10C, we had to turn up the heating, we had no choice.”

They say charity starts at home but not with this rubbish government, as others have said QUEER STARMER is ok and living in a land of plenty paid for by us, and as we put Labour into power why shouldn't they live it up with us footing the bill. The answer is if we have to live within our means then surely this Labour government should be doing the same and setting a good example??

We are our brothers keeper. Citizens need to help one another when the government is not doing all they can. I would like to challenge those who have more resources to do just a little something to ease their neighbors burden. It doesn't have to be much to make a difference. Maybe someone you know needs help with an appliance or a young family that could do with a few extra groceries. Maybe you know someone who can't afford to put gas in their car. Gift cards are practical and useful. Alot of little gestures really add up. ..not to mention the good feeling that comes with helping our fellow man! Energy companies are usually fine with that if you insist on it, and as long as your paying a bit by instalments they don't mind. Whatever you do don't sit in the cold if you are reading this and are elderly. Once we get to the lighter and warmer half of the year (late March to late September) you'll consume far less energy anyway and will pay off the winter bill before the cold comes back.

There was no mention of relatives; people don't want to say that they receive little or no help from family. Have you heard of the term, "Cardboard Grannies"? Especially in Hong Kong, the elderly collect cardboard for recycling earning about $6 per day. Some are in their 80's and 90's! It breaks your heart that their adult children and adult grandchildren don't help. In Asian cultures, they fear "losing face" and don't want to be a burden. I just saw a short documentary about Indian seniors being abandoned by their families. One elderly gentleman was blinded in an accident and was betrayed by his sons who left him to fend for himself. Seeing him cry even after being saved still destroys the soul.

@@joycef8443 Sorry, I had replied but can't find my response to you. I'm saddened and angry that many people who are healthy, with family/friends, and financial security do not help those in dire need. They obviously have never experienced true hardship and don't want their easy lives to be complicated by taking on others' problems. It seems that only those who have known poverty, can empathize and help selflessly. I focus my energy and time only on those who deserve it. Self-absorbed people will never understand the joy in giving and true friendships.

I live in Canada, idk maybe our cost of living is higher. All low income pensioners receive about $19,000 year. They qualify for rent subsidies in market rent up to 30%. Senior government housing is around $400 a month for 1 bdrm. All medication covered, we also have universal equal access healthcare and free basic dental. Minimum wage is $17 an hour. Moldy apartment in government housing...not besides heat is usually included in rent.
Our idiot leader decided to put a climate tax on fuel and natural gas. I live in the interior and the climate tax is more than my natural gas bill. We need natural gas heat in our cold climate, hydro electricity is too expensive for heating.
I pay $80 a month for electricity and $90 a month for natural gas. (I own my home, small has a basement all together 5 bedrooms). I had installed a new furnace (efficient) and central air for $11,000.
As a married couple we each have 3 pensions and have an average pensions of $65,000 year.
Meat is becoming unaffordable for many. Dairy has gone up about 30% in 2 years ($6 for 4 litres milk and same for a pound of butter). We import produce in the winter so it's getting expensive. Tax on petrol is about one third. We pay $1.65 per litre (it fluxuates), idiot PM added climate tax to that too.
American consumers pay less than us for the hydro electricity we sell to them...make sense!?
I think Britain is worse off!

I am most shocked to see those vast mold plaques , cannot fight against these without extensive ventilation , let fresh... unfortunately colder .... air flow in. It is a cruel tradeoff but this affects your whole respiratory system. In the Netherlands we have so called WTW systems built in all through the system and each room has a dedicated vent so as to exchange the used "old, contaminated air for fresh diluting air while giving back the heat content of the "old" air to the system. I have never seen these circonstances so grave. I am in disbelief that a pensioner who toiled their life long cannot heat at least intermittently at 17C. That is already a huge improvement. But it is a lost strugle against heat loss through poor building quality. Wish them some fine days ahead despite this predicament.

Our pipes don't freeze in northern Canada. What we do is keep the house warm all day and for 30 years we shut the heat off or down to the bottom for the night. We use heavy blankets knitted ones from the used store. wool blankets are good too until you are cozy in bed. In the morning crank the heat to 75 and try to keep it there till bed.SO, instead of running cold all day and running heat 24 hours you are now heating 16 hours. We are warm when we sleep and warm all day which is better for you.
