Keir Starmer’s winter fuel cut leaves us freezing this Christmas | Times Reports

- When it snowed a couple of weeks ago and the thermostat in John’s one-bedroom bungalow in Gloucestershire dipped to 10C, the pensioner turned the heating on for the first time this winter.
After just one hour he had to turn it off again because without the winter fuel payment John, 73, and his wife Wenefreda, 57, cannot afford to heat their home this year.
“We just can’t afford to turn it on,” John, a veteran and retired mechanic, said. “It’s either that or we go without food. The other week the thermostat was showing 10C, we had to turn up the heating, we had no choice.”

They say charity starts at home but not with this rubbish government, as others have said QUEER STARMER is ok and living in a land of plenty paid for by us, and as we put Labour into power why shouldn't they live it up with us footing the bill. The answer is if we have to live within our means then surely this Labour government should be doing the same and setting a good example??

Who votes for a government who's affiliations and backers make it obvious they hated British people and were going to send all your money abroad? The VOTERS did this to senior citizens.

This Labour government should put a cap on fuel companies margins.
The company bosses are receiving huge pay, and huge dividends, while people have to suffer. This is wrong. The government should look after the whole country, and make sensible economic decisions.

It breaks your heart that their adult children and adult grandchildren don't help. In Asian cultures, they fear "losing face" and don't want to be a burden. I just saw a short documentary about Indian seniors being abandoned by their families. One elderly gentleman was blinded in an accident and was betrayed by his sons who left him to fend for himself. Seeing him cry even after being saved still destroys the soul.
@@joycef8443 Sorry, I had replied but can't find my response to you. I'm saddened and angry that many people who are healthy, with family/friends, and financial security do not help those in dire need. They obviously have never experienced true hardship and don't want their easy lives to be complicated by taking on others' problems. It seems that only those who have known poverty, can empathize and help selflessly. I focus my energy and time only on those who deserve it. Self-absorbed people will never understand the joy in giving and true friendships.
What beautiful puppies! 😘
Thousands of OAP's will NOT survive this winter & was the very reason the payment was put in place the SHAME & disgrace of this government is appalling not to mention the NHS will be at the receiving end of the cruel policy
He brought it in because this was before the triple lock and the pensioners complained as they'd had a small rise one year. But were they grateful ? No they still moaned and voted Tory bringing in austerity for everybody else .
If they did not make provision for their retirement that is not the Government's fault. They need to start taking some responsibility for themselves.
Thank the universe my mum gets her winter fuel payment. She has an auto immune condition and she freezes up. Older people need there heating on more than most
You need to open your windows from time to time, to let the air in and help ventilation.
Exactly, if they're not putting the heating on anyway they might as well improve their living situation as best they can and air the place out to help reduce the condensation.
@@MoonOnTheTidesand it only takes like 15 minutes twice a day to keep the humidity down. You’d think they’d know that in places like the UK where it tends to be pretty damp. That mold in his place is atrocious and will be worse for his health than the cold.
Let 9 degree cold azz weather inside. Are u crazy. They'll freeze to death. Lol
@ 9c or 9f? 9c isn’t cold at all, and it’s better than mold.
Going for a walk everyday, if you can, is important for circulation.
If you can is the point..think that one through
@noramartin96 " if you can" covered it. What is there to consider otherwise?
My heart is breaking. I guarantee the heat is on when His Majesty’s Government meets to decide these ridiculous cuts
It is appalling that the winter fuel payment was cut. To think there are elderly people living in the UK who aren't sufficiently warm is terrible. What sort of society fails to protect its most vulnerable citizens? The labour party has moved a long, long way from its beginnings. IMO, Kier has no shame, no empathy, no compassion, and no care for the elderly. I hope his premiership is very short.
They are. You still get it if on pension credit . More are claiming that. It seems the world and his wife are 2 pound over the threshold.
@sfactory8253 and how exactly does that make it better for those who are cold & struggling to pay? I take it you aren't elderly nor cold.
@@dandare2586 I'm not cold as I put the heating on. Though I'm not young .I would take measures to get out of that situation. The piece is obviously a set up. Whilst he's eating rice and cabbage ere are 5 bottles of wine behind him. I wear thermals as well. I have gone to bed early in the past when younger and skint and I save for my retirement . Suddenly the right wing have become communists and want to hand out government money to all.
Don't worry though starmer will be nice and warm
Lesson to learn. Never rely on the gov pension people. You are at their mercy.
This is so sad 😢 No one should be deprived of heat in the winter, it’s cruel ‼️ The government should helping you and not take away your vital needs. I 🙏🏻 your situation improves . Do you have an electric blanket to help you stay warm ?
Minimum wage is over 20k a year for a 35 hour week, the state pension is just over 10k a year we pay that on rent alone per year, I don’t know what will happen when one of us dies, the future looks bleak 😔
When does pension credit kick in ?
Did you not think about your retirement when you were working?
I live in Canada, idk maybe our cost of living is higher. All low income pensioners receive about $19,000 year. They qualify for rent subsidies in market rent up to 30%. Senior government housing is around $400 a month for 1 bdrm. All medication covered, we also have universal equal access healthcare and free basic dental. Minimum wage is $17 an hour. Moldy apartment in government housing...not besides heat is usually included in rent.
Our idiot leader decided to put a climate tax on fuel and natural gas. I live in the interior and the climate tax is more than my natural gas bill. We need natural gas heat in our cold climate, hydro electricity is too expensive for heating.
I pay $80 a month for electricity and $90 a month for natural gas. (I own my home, small has a basement all together 5 bedrooms). I had installed a new furnace (efficient) and central air for $11,000.
As a married couple we each have 3 pensions and have an average pensions of $65,000 year.
Meat is becoming unaffordable for many. Dairy has gone up about 30% in 2 years ($6 for 4 litres milk and same for a pound of butter). We import produce in the winter so it's getting expensive. Tax on petrol is about one third. We pay $1.65 per litre (it fluxuates), idiot PM added climate tax to that too.
American consumers pay less than us for the hydro electricity we sell to them...make sense!?
I think Britain is worse off!
I refuse to sit in my home freezing my heating will be on this is an absolute
disgrace 😡
That's the same temperatures of my home to economize fuel costs. I wear fleece overalls, a hat, heavy sweaters, gloves, and thick boots indoors all winter.
I am most shocked to see those vast mold plaques , cannot fight against these without extensive ventilation , let fresh... unfortunately colder .... air flow in. It is a cruel tradeoff but this affects your whole respiratory system. In the Netherlands we have so called WTW systems built in all through the system and each room has a dedicated vent so as to exchange the used "old, contaminated air for fresh diluting air while giving back the heat content of the "old" air to the system. I have never seen these circonstances so grave. I am in disbelief that a pensioner who toiled their life long cannot heat at least intermittently at 17C. That is already a huge improvement. But it is a lost strugle against heat loss through poor building quality. Wish them some fine days ahead despite this predicament.
11.6 in my house. Colder in bathroom so don't bother to wash in winter some days. Can't bear to undress in there.
Insulate Britain are right .
My small window is open as soon as I get up just a few inches, only when it's too cold I keep window shut, but still open to allow a good blast of air to come in,just wrap up,the window has vents, the walls have vents, the windows are draughty i only get mold from leaking roof
I have insulated my old home as much as I can but it remains cold. We have been promised cheap energy for decades and we're still waiting.
Merry Christmas to all over the 🌎 ❄️🎄🎁
not saying the conservatives are better, because they forgot how to be conservative. But this labour government that was once for the working man is in charge of this mess, is a disgrace
should not have war . use money for well being of people.
How much money is it going to cost to the nhs to treat more pensioners with cold related illnesses this winter I think it’s a fair guestion to ask starmer
This poor man may be jailed for speaking out.
Feel warm in the thought that non British are enjoying their free hotel rooms this season. Merry Christmas
Our pipes don't freeze in northern Canada. What we do is keep the house warm all day and for 30 years we shut the heat off or down to the bottom for the night. We use heavy blankets knitted ones from the used store. wool blankets are good too until you are cozy in bed. In the morning crank the heat to 75 and try to keep it there till bed.SO, instead of running cold all day and running heat 24 hours you are now heating 16 hours. We are warm when we sleep and warm all day which is better for you.
MOLD , we only had mold once because we closed a door in the basement so the moisture made mold that I fixed.
Going to bed has become a new hobby
Can not be cold this is awful. Shame on the government.
So sad , this government so generous to the high pay train drivers but not to old pensioners !!!! So disgusting n shame on the Labour government
The two are not remotely connected idiot, the King has eight palaces fully heated which he doesn’t even use. How about having a go at him? Not the working class getting a pay rise, goodness you are stupid, good old working class moaning when the working class get a pay rise but ignore the multi millionaire aristocracy, keep putting yourselves down.👍👍👍👍🙈🙈🙈🤡
We need train drivers. Think about it .
@Julie False. We dont. Most of Eurole have no train drivers as it can be unmanned
@@juliewills8034 What a moronic comment. You think about it. If you can
He needs to ventilate the property to eliminate the mold or get a dehumidifier. So far I think we've been fortunate with a relatively mild winter .I've been able to open the windows and get fresh air in most days.
Dehumidifier's tend not to work that well in low temperature. He needs to prioritise the heating a bit more.
Snowfall is predicted again in under a week 😢
It's really sad to see and hear this 😢 Labour should be ashamed of themselves.
My mother never use to wear a coat.. Now that she is older, she keep a heater in her room to keep it really warm since she always cold. That is awful to allow the older people to be cold.
