      I don't know if you are aware but Links awakening was originally black and white.

      The hardest thing with that one was to have time to kill him before the batterys of the game boy died.

    The fact that this remake inspired you to go and buy the original on the Eshop shows why Nintendo is making a mistake by not having the virtual console on the Switch. They could make BANK selling old games to us old folk for nostalgia and to the new folk who haven’t played these games yet. Pls Nintendo pls

    You made some excellent points in this video!! I am personally a huge fan of this new artstyle, as it really does fit all of the wacky elements this game has to offer!! (Mario crossovers, talking animals, etc.)
    Also, I agree that this artstyle should not be used in a future Zelda game, as it will take away from this games uniqueness. I know there is currently speculation about using this artstyle to remake the oracle games as well, but i don't think it'll be the proper fit, despite the original games sharing the same engine as Links awakening.
    Great video NBC!!! 😄

    • @geno_xi
      @geno_xi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, the art style is very pleasing. However it just doesn’t fit Zelda to me. It does fit this game in particular and I don’t think it deserve flack since it does have work put into it. I would have preferred them either fully embracing the “cellda” style and have more Windwaker aesthetics or a Link Between worlds art style. I wish they would have gone for the Link Between Worlds and make everything “less chibi”. It would make the game not age as well if it went for realism but I don’t think it should go full realism but mostly a Link Between Worlds since this is all in the same timeline and the same Link. Overall I don’t mind this and I actually like but would have preferred a Link between worlds.
      I am aware the game is a dream making this art style fit.

      Link's Awakening is a great game and I'm glad it's being re-made, but this TH-cam uploader seems to be struggling with philosophical answers to obvious question, down to not being able to pronounce the word juxtaposition from some reddit comment. It's a 2D game being remade on the Switch, which has the power of a large cell phone. Just pure laziness and profit margins would make it an extremely fair assumption that they picked the 2D game to remake because they knew they could do it in easily under two years and without a giant staff.

    The problem with the “Child’s Dream” argument is that Link isn’t the dreamer. The Wind Fish is. Yes, Link is in the dream, but the game refers to the Wind Fish as “THE dreamer” and “the one you need to wake.” The art style (plastic vegetation and all) is based off of the original title, where anything detailed enough had a plastic shine.

      The Oracle games however, I would love to see them in a much more darker and realistic world. Those plots are too dark to have a cartoony appeal to it

    I think the biggest issue going on right now is that this art is causing a bigger controversy then wind waker's original release at this point,. The biggest issue I've seen doesn't have to do with the style as much as Links character model looks like it lacks detail compared to almost every other model we see. Heck the monsters and the stupid owl seem to have proper eyes, with the only other human showed is Marin and her eyes are closed in the trailer so we can't compare that.

    Interesting note: this is actually the first remake of a handheld Zelda game title! Also, LoZ:LA is the only game to feature one of the most OP Zelda items/weapons ever...the fire rod! Unlike fire rods before/after this game, the fire rod from LoZ:LA requires no magic, doesn't break, can one-shot almost any normal enemy, has unlimited range, and can fire an unlimited number of shots without having to recharge! Sadly, this item/weapon is obtained so late in the game that there are virtually no puzzles that require it outside of the Turtle Rock dungeon.

Now imagine how a seven year old reacted to this game, especially since the only games he played before was Wii Sports and Mario 2. The game felt real to me. It was the first story I heard that made me think about it for days after hearing the end of it. I wish I still had that childlike wonder, where you could play a little pixelated game on your Gameboy and be warped to another world, full of adventure and mystery. It's more than a game to me, it represents my childhood innocence. When I first saw the trailer, I couldn't even talk I was so exited. It took me hours to fully comprehend it. Personally I’m hyped for this game & don’t really care about the art style.
    Yes it’s basically the opposite of Twilight PrincessHD but to be honest The oracle saga hasn’t been updated since the 3ds which is ok but I’d really appreciate it if the community could chill out, mostly because we’ve only had one trailer released from Nintendo.
    The only thing I hope is that Nintendo creates this art style in the oracle games

    Graphics are a secondary concern to gameplay. If it is fun to play, it is a good game. If a game looks amazing, it isn't necessarily a good game. Having said that, this game looks great. In particular, I love the haziness around the edges of the gameplay area giving subtle hints to the player about the world they are in.

    Maybe it’s just me, but would most of the problems be resolved (though some may resurface) if link’s art style changes to a more serious one in the nightmares or something (something less dreamy but more nightmarish). I don’t really know how they can approach this though.

    The latest Nintendo PowerPodcast had Bill Trinen on as a guest and he spoke on how “every new Zelda title introduces a new art style.” That’s one of the many reasons I love this series. That’s something that gives each one character and makes it unique.

    0:54 They were making Links Awakening for 3DS how could you not see this coming. I mean for 3 years or so rumors about Links Awakening Remake for 3DS were mentioned. There was even a remake rumor of Metroid 2 Remake and that actually did come out. The only thing we did not see coming was the home console getting it Links Awakening.

    There are a couple VERY small changes that would make a big difference to me.
    1) If Link is gonna be expressionless, give him the flat, bored/determined eyebrows. The fact that his hat collided with his eyes always gave that impression in the original, and it would be great characterization here.
    2) Don’t be afraid to put screenwide color/particle filters over areas that warrant it. The color contrast, and palette-swapping that was a staple due to GBC’s hardware was a big part of DX’s charm, and retaining the impression of that, especially for dungeons, is important to me.

  • @DaSheepKiller
    @DaSheepKiller 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The artstyle not only suits the remake because of the Mario enemies and the fact that the whole game is a dream, but if you pay attention to certain things from the original such as the photos you can view, you can see that the original game was in this artstyle, it just wasn't as obvious because it's a pixel game while the remake is 3D (not 3D in the same sense as Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, etc., but you know what I mean).

    I think at least if I were able to make a game like this, I'd have a cutesy artstyle for the normal game, and then it gets much darker during dungeons and boss fights, because they can be perceived as link's nightmare sequences in a way
    but that's just me

    Im really stoked that someone thought the same thing as me. no one else is really talking about the fact that you are in a dream... of course it is going to look weird from "reality" and the art style fits this game perfectly. I thought the same as you on don't use it for other games either. If that is the reason for the art style, then it likely won't be used again.

  • @TheRavenCoder

    I loved this game (dx version) on the gameboy color. I still believe it to be the best Zelda handheld game and one of the most unique games in the series (tied with Majoras Mask). I thought the dream sequence was a clear explanation for the art style since the reveal. I think most of the haters don't understand the story the game was trying to tell. The original had an egg on top of a mountain for Pete's sake! I, personally, am looking forward to this remake and hope it captures the charm of the original. And I also hope they include the photographs you could collect in the original 😁

  • @skins4thewin
    @skins4thewin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So yeah, I will say that the look is a bit surprising and will take some getting used to, but I do like it for its uniqueness. The art style kind of reminds me of a claymation cartoon like Gumby or the like. I dig it. I do however share the concern of being unsure how they will fit the look to the somewhat darker tone this game has in general, but hopefully they will make it work.

    On top of being able to play this game on the Switch, I am totally looking forward to seeing how they changed things up from the original (besides the upgraded look, obviously). For one thing, looks like itemization has been changed! You can see Link being able to jump with both his sword and shield equipped whereas in the original you needed to equip the roc's feather to do so and constantly swap it. That alone has me very happy!

    so I'm going to ask because I have to.
    you've said about this art style should be used only for this zelda. if they remade the oracle series of games, how do you think they should do the art style there?

  • @somarutomeha2431
    @somarutomeha2431 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone who has played most of the zelda series, aside from a small handful, I find myself enjoying games like the Oracle games and other 2D Zelda games because with so low resolution, the words spoken seemed more powerful than the expressions of 3D titles. To me, reading the dialogue and letting my childish imagination make my own expressions or vocal tone was what drew me in to play for hours. Even as an adult, that same feeling still washes over me when I play the games on my 3DS. As for the art style, I hated windwaker for the changes to the art style ... at first. Then I great to see how it made the game it's own kind of special. I see Link's Awakening being the same way. Giving it a 3D face lift is cool in all, but to me, even if it was still 2D and just a smoother rendered port, I would pick it up as one of my top 5 favorite Zelda games.

    My biggest issue with the graphics comes from the world itself, which looks extremely blocky and artificial, which looks ok on a 2d game boy game, but looks horrid on a 3d game from an 8th gen console.

    The reason why it’s not called Links reawakening is because in Japan the original Links Awakening is called Dream Island. They didn’t change the name for the switch version so the West also kept the name from the gameboy color. (It also explains the new logo with palm trees on an island.)

    The only thing that comes to my mind is the Oracle games, and how those aren't dreams perse, but still have the same style as LA, and the cutscenes as well, but I digress, as the Tri-force teleported him to those two lands, but at the same time if I remember, I think the oracle games are prequels, since the ending of the games is him getting on a raft, which is what he had in the og LA, but I dunno, its an interesting idea to wonder if they ever remake the Oracle games and keep the same art style, makes me excited, but I won't get my hopes up.
