Loving all the videos. One thing to note, you really want your dial indicator perpendicular with the face of the flywheel when measuring, not at an angle as show in the video.

If you do it at the short block then you don't have to consider the wrist pins affecting anything. plus it's light enough to get up on the bench . Use the magnetic base of the dial indicator on the flywheel and the indicator on the case that way you don't have to think about the engine stand giving you movement that could affect the measurement.
also keep the gland nut loose on the crank - then when prying the flywheel off you don't have to worry about it popping and dropping.

Some good info brother, we all have our way that's for sure.

Having had a flywheel come loose some years back, I use a heavy duty Chromoly gland nut with a thick dished washer (inexpensive peace of mind) and a set of deep dowel pins. I use Loctite on final assembly and i torque past the recommended 250lbs, even up as far as 350lbs.
I've also had many issues with leaky/torn oil seals due to a combination of bad advice and sloppy assembly. Like you I was told to sit the seal flush with the case. Bad idea. Patience is the key and I now use assembly lube generously around the seal before final flywheel assembly.
Learned through experience, got it right on my last engine build.

Hi jd,hope your keeping well,i have a question for you, will you be doing anymore builds on the flat 4's,as i was watched the part where you installed the flywheel, and turned it by hand a little, did you ever try a complete rotation on flywheel by hand with plugs installed, because on my engine,i can rotate quite easily without plugs, but as soon as i put the plugs in,it becomes very tight to turn flywheel by hand, i know it is on a compression stroke, but i am not convinced the starter will turn it over as a result,i just recently installed new piston rings, and can appreciate a little stiffness due to rings being new,so if you do another video of another engine, could you do a complete turn on the flywheel,(plugs installed )so i can see how stiff it feels to you,i never saw the start up of your engine, did i miss it,or is it coming up soon on your video bud, sorry for the silly question, but i need some kinda closure as to whether it's just my imagination,i don't want to attach starter,as i'm pretty sure it won't crank it over and don't want to burn out the starter out, cheers for any advice given jd.

No problem.. I can add a demonstration of turning the flywheel by hand with and without spark plugs. There is a big difference.

@@JWClassicVW Hi jd,i agree there is a big difference,i will be adding a starter soon, but just not convinced it will crank over,? my bus has been off road for over two years now,due to finding time to rebuild engine as i work long hours in my job,so hope you can shed some light on this matter jd,cheers.

Don't forget you'll want to prime the oil system with no plugs. The reason is basically what you found out. You'll burn up the starter with the plugs in priming the oil system.

@@JWClassicVW That will be done prior to starting jd,thanks for the advice my friend.
