  • Installation of a the flywheel for a 1971 Sup Beetle. In this video I shared with you the process and installation of the flywheel. I demonstrate how to check endplay in your flywheel and lastly how to toque the gland nut using a torque multiplier tool. Like, share, subscribe. Thanks for watching 🙂

Great video, I love that you're so thorough when you're demonstrating

The Torque Multiplier is one of the best and must have tools for any air cooled VW owner. It pays for itself the first time you use it and works for your rear drums (for any time you need to service brakes or rear axle seals) and your flywheel.

Great video! Well made. Your garage and your project look great too.
I think you should have a thick wavy washer under the gland nut though? It should obscure the dowel pin holes. I think it stops the gland nut from marking up the flywheel.
    That torque tool looks cool!

You live in an area where they have a big vw following we joined the Central Ohio Vintage VW club back in in 1992. When we lived in Dublin/Muirfield area up by by sawmill road we would drive our 1978 beetle on a road covered with trees up by Powel with the top down. The kids were little back then and would asked to go for a ride on the "Tree Road" It was back in the 90's when we live in Columbus , and in the winter time would that the kids to the zoo and see all the Christmas lights..

Nice work JR i have the same tools for that job , I used a dial indicator to check my end play, i have one so just used it both methods work. After the motor complete is it ready for the road or do you have more repair work ?? You have a nice camera vidieo was very clear sound was good too. That one thing i need to improve my camera and my video making process.

Great video, very clear and understandable. What is the name of the tool you used in conjunction with the feeler gauges to get the correct set back? I've searched various descriptions and nothing I've tried is pulling it up. Or if you have a link to it, even better. Thanks!

Thanks for the good comprehensive tutorial.
    BUT!:
What if the existing shims don't give you the desired .003"-.004" end play? And how many shims can you use?
(I know the answers, but others may not)

I just went to use mine and my nut was 38mm 🤦‍♂️ Dang racing parts, bought the torque tool just for this engine build lol. Do you think if I cut out the middle socket thing, and welded a 38mm socket in it's place, would the same 9:1 torque principle apply? It should right? The flywheel diameter is constant, the distance between the center of rotation and the teeth of the flywheel would be the same(well as close as I could get it to the same), the nut is just larger.

@@juniorclassicvwbugs924 I ended up actually cutting up a brand new 36mm gland nut tool to weld a brand new 38mm socket to. Ouch. Glad nut is tight though, and now if any one around me needs one they can borrow it

You installed gland nut with no thrust washing and you should have oil or lubed the shims and oil seal before install or am I wrong

    • @juniorclassicvwbugs924
      @juniorclassicvwbugs924  ปีที่แล้ว

During the video I missed to install the thrust washer, but I went back after the video and installed it. I honestly don’t recall if it is really necessary to lube the them. My has been working fine.

What's an average shim thickness for a rebuilt engine? Just have a mystery engine and need a ballpark idea,
