    Not enough Dinty Moore in the world to finish this little beauty. $250k will get you $150K worth of boat. Of course maybe Mads at Sail Life might want to jump on this little gem...

    I don’t remember seeing a review quite like this on Captain Qs channel. Though I found the pairs humor quite entertaining I still can appreciate that they still respect what they were inspecting . Having been in AARP territory for some years now I’m not quite sure I would want to invest the time in this boat bringing her back but still feel it has the “ bones” to be brought back to a fine sailing vessel. With the entire below deck being opened it gives the owner a opportunity to install and restore the vessel using quality materials and nav equipment. As always , 🍺 to the Captain and Ran-day . Great review gentleman. Looking forward to the next one 👍

    I love how the CQ lads are so gracious even when reviewing such a ridiculous amount of work, always seeing the potential. What a project! Nice to see the doggie love too. Sweet smiles 😊 Also, not be a pest, but us viewers really want to see Randay’s new boat. How about a 30 second teaser in the next episode, just to tide us over until perhaps a new channel is created when the time is right. I'm relieved all is well and back on schedule. I was worried last week wth the late post. Keep going. We would miss you too much if you ever stopped.

    this is way to rough for 25k , especially 12,500 for partnership, it's 5k max that is a stretch as rough as hull looks

    • @Alex-e-Azam
      @Alex-e-Azam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I concur. 5k is way too low, tbh. I think $7.5K - $10K is fine for buyer and seller both.

    I would rent a JCB and dig a big hole, crane it in then back fill it with foam, plumb in a water supply and then you would have a cozy starter home or a subterranean workshop or even a wine cellar. It’s not the Mary rose so its not worth the renovation really because it will never justify its cost.

    I think this is a cool boat! Yes, it's a project, but so what? My current boat is a project boat and I'm loving it. It gives me something to do, I'm learning about my boat, and I get to customize it the way that I want. If it takes someone ten years and $80K to fix this boat...who cares? In ten years you'll have a lovely world traveler! Thank you Randy and Captain Q for showing us this boat.

  • @jimdavis215
    @jimdavis215 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I was once told that anything could be fixed with enough time and money, but for 25K you could buy a lot of resin and cloth and build your own hull and start fresh. That is all that is here is a hull and deck..an old hull and deck with concrete as one of the keel materials.

    🙂 Captain & Randy.
    Talk about two sides of a coin! Last week a little on the high side and this week a complete rework! And you knew you had this one in the can last week when I got on you two about high point! You guys are sea devils. 😅
    Ok.
    This boat would be a awesome project for a young couple with a couple of sons 🤔 Once upon a time that may have been my brother and I except we built one from the get go 😅 But we really loved her like one of the family and the experience was priceless!
    I really enjoyed this one!
    Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Thinking about sharing with my brother, but he didn't really enjoy working on the boat while his friends were out and about.

    Kelly-Peterson 44/46 have an extreme reputation with respect to seaworthiness, speed and livability. I had the opportunity to be at the boatyard in Taiwan during buildtime and can confirm the solid and handcraft making of these boats - and after several European production boats I got one of them 3 years ago - what a difference!

It is for sure the perfect boat for someone in an un-perfect situation. I do hope they see this video and bliss ensues Love your episodes Cap'n Q. p.s. - good job not panicking as you took off on that sheet of ice under the stairs. Neato. The value in this boat is in the invaluable, free education you would receive from restoring this ol' beauty. I'm sure there's a plucky, young couple that would be willing to take on the challenge. Maybe even put it all on YT with regular check-ups from Cpt. and Randay. I'm tempted myself, tbh, but I just bought a house last week, so I'm already waay to poor to even ponder the notion. Fair winds Captain!

    Great Episode again, This boat reminds me of the tv series Firefly,
    Should you spend the money, time and effort to fix it up? probably not. You could get a better deal (probably) on something else, but you would do all of that and more for Love of the boat and knowing how neglected she was when you started and what a treasure it would be once finished. Hopefully she finds her Captain Mal.

    I am a bit old (at 64), so there is not enough sand in the hourglass. I recall some wonderful evenings aboard a friend's KP 44. The only drawback was having to look around the mast at your companions on the other side of the saloon at dinner (it had a more traditional settee setup with a centerline table). It is very fast compared to the competition.

    I totally agree, Captain. With the present owners proven ability to take the lead on this job, $12,500 is well worth the price of the boat building education alone. If I was a younger man, I’m older than you, I would jump at it. Maybe in another life. Such deals don’t come along that often, and can well be a life changing move. It is a gamble well worth taking for the right person.

  • @operator0
    @operator0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    There's one of these for sale on yachtworld. Asking price is $65,000, but we all know that can be negotiated down under $60,000. The boat is located in Mexico. It has five year old electronics, five year old canvas, and five year old standing rigging. It comes with a dinghy motor (no mention of a dinghy), a SSB, and a water maker. The auxiliary engine has 1000 hours on it. From the pics, the boat appears to be in really good shape.
    So, for an extra $35,000 (plus broker fees, taxes, ect) you can buy one of these ready to sail. That seems like a no-brainer to me.

    Yes, we talked recently on these boat. It really is a fantastic boat. Very fast ( I hit near 200 mile days a couple of times in the Pacific.) And very well behaved. Helm could be a little heavy but even when totally out of trim, had full authority. A lot of boats don’t. Great layout and yes, very solid. Loved mine. Never any significant problems in 10 yrs of full time cruising.

    I think the rating you gave this one is fair. It has good bones. BUT!! It needs a lot of work to say the least. I noticed some rust or something coming out of the shaft tube on the keel. That was a little worrisome on top of everything else. It might be overthinking something though. The interior is a total YIKES!!! Although there was some good material left. Maybe.
    The hull looked sound though.

    Can Aussies get a green card Captain? There's a heap of work to be done sure but I'd love to get my hands on this puppy. I've also been watching Mads and Eva on saillife and what he has achieved by himself mostly is all but fantastic..absolutely do-able with the knowledge of the owner. But it will take a lot of coin to fix her right.Which begs the question what would you do for work on the side to finance all the required materials? That would be the only thing stopping me getting on a kite guys.Also this would be a full time job with 2 guys for at least two years going full steam..providing you can gel with the owner and work well/ gel togerher..But geez I'd be up for it. Loved this yacht. If the owner can sort accommodation out into the deal then... dream big this is a floating house and could be glorious. Loved this episode guys..Til next week Auf wiedersehen

    It's going to take alot of work, not that that's necessarily a bad thing, the selling point I don't think is the boat so much as the oppourtunity to work with the gentleman, access to the tools, knowledge and place to keep the boat. As training it could be a great investment, that said there's going to be alot of costs involved in fixing it and at the end of it you'd have a great boat but need to sell it to probably not make much monetary profit (if any) unless you had deep pockets. Buying it out right would seem overpriced. It reminds me of Uma (a Peterson 36 of course).

I just did a quick Google search and found a few of the same 1977-1979 boats for sale that ranged from 2 $35K and $48K examples which needed moderate updating (but were able to be sailed), a couple 1978 ones that were $65K and had extensive updating/repair/new equipment and one 1979 boat for $90K which could be sailed around the world tomorrow (and had performed 2 circumnavigations)

      Surface blisters. I think referred to as Osmotic blistering. When popped they smell of vinegar. Major problem for some hulls built around that time frame. There was an oil crisis that caused some resin manufacturers to change formulas which caused blistering issues. Not bad if small, but on some boats the blisters went very deep and were very large. I have seen where they use a planer to cut a layer of hull off and build the hull back up with epoxy. If I had any concerns about blistering I would recommend a professional survey by someone very qualified in blister repair. It is not a cheap or easy repair. Down here in Florida the hot salt water makes the problems even worse.

    You should have planted a couple empty containers of DM and F throughout for added effect. Looks like a wonderful has been but way too much work for most. And yes you “found it”.

    That did sting a bit - not getting a 10. The poor gal has fallen a long ways. It's going to take deep pockets and true believers to bring her back. Props to who ever tackles it. Dang shame she was allowed to get so bad.

    I think this boat is a lost cause. Only a die hard Kelly Peterson lover would or should tackle this project. Please prove me wrong and splash a beautiful boat.

    Cast iron embedded in cement will always rust, then splay, cracking the cement. Cheap construction techniques. For a very few dollars more they could have used lead and epoxy. If they cut this corner you can bet they cut many corners to make it cheaper.

      Hi George, Kelly Peterson construction was the opposite: Attention to detail. Jack Kelly put engineers on the ground in Taiwan to oversee 24/7. Many, many stories of their input, refinements, etc. Including some first hand by posters here to confirm. The keel construction using cement is debatable. It's discussed, but the real issue is, there's never been an issue. No delam, nothing. Just a shallow bilge w a solid keel construction. Amd, absolutely rock solid compared to modern production boats w bolt on issues, etc. Granted, this one is rough. But, as he points out, after a Hinkley review, KP44s are clearly one of the best foundations to build on.

      The part about the concrete and steel is absolutely untrue. I can confirm this with my own eyes. The Kelly Peterson boats have lead keels not iron, not concrete and steel. I struck a rock in the strait of Georgia BC Canada. I was hung up healing at 30° for six hours until high tide and could get pulled off after a day and a half sail to a lift. We found about $100 in damage to the keel! (Filler and paint) the lead in the keel was clearly exposed and tested… It's lead

    25 grand? Seriously? She looks more like two and a half grand including everything every owner ever has bought for her plus a free two years of storage and workshop-access to be honest. There's still a certain amount of potential left, given it's a classic CC Cutter, but that potential is buried well beyond anything we'd call "fixer-upper". It is a full rebuild You gotta do here: Hull, deck, interior, tech. There might be some salvagable parts but You basically have to restore/rebuild/replace everything underdeck which would be two years for a very hard worker alone before any sq-foot of deck will be addressed. The pickled hull is fixable, but that is another crapload of dirty overhead work involving a lot of machinery and expensive material. So, she might have been a beauty once as much as a fiberglass boat can be one, but she's not a "sleeping beauty" today easily roused with a kiss, more like a pretty brittle mummy determined to eat up and evaporate Your effort and money with little to show once You will be way beyond the investment a better version would have required.

    The Kelly Peterson S# is 1.9. I would love to hear the Captain's opinion on this rating.
    S# first appeared (that we know of) in TellTales, April 1988, “On a Scale of One to Ten” by A.P. Brooks . The equation incorporates SA/Disp (100% fore triangle) and Disp/length ratios to create a guide to probable boat performance vs. other boats of comparable size. For boats of the same length, generally the higher the S#, the lower the PHRF.
    Under 2 - Slow, under powered.
    2-3 - Cruiser
    3-5 - Racer Cruiser
    5+ - Fast/Racing

      @blackhawkteam8625 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I don't quite understand that rating for that boat. My best 24 hour period was 207 miles very impressive for a 33,000 pound boat with 1056 ft.² of sail. These Kelly Peterson's are bad ass. Honestly, I couldn't be happier.
