    "Their videos are quite educational and very entertaining. As for the sailboat in question, I don't understand why in a boat that is 44 feet long they have to make real nooks and crannies with such an impractical interior design. With a boat that size, they could have a more open and practical distribution, and not something so overwhelming. The truth is that I have passed on this model of boat. Happy night and a big hug from Venezuela

    In the early 90s, an ER doctor in Pascagoula, Mississippi, owned one of these babies. She was docked in Biloxi, Mississippi, where I had the opportunity to tour it. Without question, she became one of my favorite designs. He sold her (reason unsure) and I saw her a few years later in Pensacola, Florida. From there I'm not sure what happened to her. From the very first day that I saw her, I loved the design, obvious strength and seaworthiness, quality, and ocean going capabilities. It would be nice to own one. When this video began and you showed a glimpse of her forward deck I knew it was a Lafitte 44. I became excited that you were doing a review on one....I loved your entire inspection. Thank you!

    Having lived one of these, they are tanks that perform. Safe, faster than you'd think. The 2nd entrance is great for loading the galley! I heard of one that broke free during a storm and hit a sea wall. Broke the wall, barely scratched the boat.

    If my wife and I were thinking monohull this would be exactly what we'd look for. 2-3 seasons of learning the boat, fixing the issues (like the teak on the deck, etc.) and then circumnavigate.
    This boat has so much potential for someone who is willing to take the long view and make her a home. I wish I could right now but, dangit, I have to wait another 5 or so years to make that dream happen.
    Thanks for sharing her with us.

      Martin, the teak deck really are not an issue at this time, or you if you can't sleep at knight. Professional sanding of Decks and replug screw holes. Capt. Captain Q begins the video standing under my families schooner, Sarah Abbot. I know it is outside the norm for you guys but there is a mass maritime boat in that yard, a farr 39, which is remarkably well built and really interesting. Not a cruising boat but it even got my old man, the schooner master, pretty intrigued. Keep up the good work, these videos are a great service to anyone trying to learn about sailboats.

      You can see the damage everywhere the deck is leaking as discoloration of the woodwork. Sadly, that's a ton of damage that will have to be corrected along with the deck replacement / removal (update to KiwiGrip if they're smart).

      All of these old boats are nice to look at but what we really need is some estimate what it would cost to fix them. How often should standing and running rigging be replaced. How much wood requiring and/or replacing a deck cost. How much replacing a teak deck such as that one would cost. Also having a good survey on a boat and what you should expect to pay for one would be exceedingly helpful. I think we’re putting the cart before the horse here

      @@SP-wg5pn good points. Just from what I saw on video this boat will need $50k+ spent on restoration. Which means there's probably at least that much again I couldnt see.

    Perry sure does have many great bluewater designs, all with good headroom as he is a fairly tall guy. This is one design of his of which I was not aware. Very stout like the rest. Love the canoe style stern. Usually a great sign of ocean going capabilities. Bill Crealock was also a fan of this style.
    I was waiting for you to review one of Perry's, but was kind of hoping it might be one of his full keel designs, e.g., the venerable and ubiquitous Tayana 37, or a Baba/Union/Ta Shing/Panda. Though I'd have settled for a Valiant 40+. What would really be cool is if you could get an in depth interview with him.

    I was interested to see this boat. No doubt the hull is great for crossing oceans. This one would be an acquired taste. The layout below is not something I would choose. The deck and what I suspect is significant core damage to the decks and cabin top would be a big concern. Not sure about the engine. This boat will require tons of experienced labor hours to get in shape. I would pull the teak and go with fiberglass non skid or perhaps synthetic teak. This one may be tough to sell at or near the asking price. Potential buyer should the very best surveyor with experience surveying off shore sail boats. Can't wait until next Thursday. Mr. Kerr and Mr. Gleason I hope to give one of you or maybe both (partners) a bit of encouragement to sell every damn thing you own, beg, barrow if needed to get the money to make an offer on Dream Weaver. What about a review of an out-and-out race boat? Something to go to Bermuda or Halifax.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any boat actually becomes an out out race boat when you make up your mind you wanna go from one place or another as fast as you can. It’s all a matter of preparation and a lot of forethought and planning. Some years ago after buying the PV and going into racing classes with it, I found finding adequate crew was sometimes difficult so I joined in and advocated for others the cruising Canvas divisions of race courses. And they have these all the way to Halifax and all the way to Bermuda. The main difference is that you don’t carry a spinnaker. That eliminates half of your crew on a big race boat. And trust me the cruise on these cruising canvas races are as serious and intense as any of the big-time guys. We will probably come across both that are probably more inclined toward racing or racing as a one design class such as some of the J Class boats or “J”manufactured boats. But the coolest thing about racing boats is getting into your own and really really focusing on it and getting that last little 10th of a not a boat speed out of it. Over a day or two days or six days those tenths of a knot can add up

      @@larryboles629 - has this boat been surveyed recently?

    • @akathesquid5794
      @akathesquid5794 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@larryboles629 I agree it is a great boat and a lot of investment has been made on all the right things. No refit needed and all the upgrades in place. When I was shopping I looked at this boat in Fall 2019, it was on my short list. It pained me to walk away but I was not interested in the last work that needed to be done. The owner apparently felt the same and left on their voyage after all these investments but delaying the inevitable. The deck and woodwork. No way just sand and bung, there is no teak left there. It was abused by being brushed along the grain, as Q pointed out the soft wood eroded from the planks. It needs to be replaced or removed, along with a lot of the trim. Many people don't want this project, especially if you get a US quote. But as I already said, if you are willing to stop at a place like Grenada, then you can get some good work done. These boats look amazing with glass decks and this particular example is truly ready for voyaging. I am surprised it is still on the market, the buyer is out there.

    I cannot see the owner to this. Seperate entrance for the crew - isn't that me? And in bad weather using the unprotected entrance? Entering the kitchen thru the head? And the unprotected rudder I do not like. The engine deep under - good for the boat but bad for me. It is always a compromise, but here it is not mine.

    Ah the highlight of my week. I'm not loving this boat and that is a first. The layout and the sleeping arrangements not the best use of space for the ladies. While I'm sure she will get you anywhere, I feel your better half would long for a real hot shower and a bed with headroom especially at anchor where, again the cockpit seating is downsized. Also I think it's a lot of boat for a young couple maybe starting their journey. Dunno. In the end it's a question of taste. Thanks for the great tour Captain Q and Randay.

It wasn't up to me, so we still have teak decks on our boat 😂. We had them redone in the Philippines at a fraction of the cost. Solid big heavy boat, but not one of my favorite Perry designs. Maybe it is partially the name Lafitte, but also it doesn't have the charming look (to my eye, above deck or below) of the Valiant 40 or many of his other boats. But, even at $150K all up after some repairs, this is still a good buy for someone who wants to do some serious cruising on a big boat with a great pedigree.

      John, Dream Weaver does not need any or the repairs you may think. Don't touch the deck till you really have to, or if they keep you awake at night have the deck professional sanded and the screw plugs replaced. I absolutely hate that forward companionway for two reasons. One, you have to go onto the cabin top to use it which is dangerous in a seaway and two the ladder is almost vertical. The ladder simply invites a bad fall. Repairing the water damaged teak veneer is not that hard IF the substrate isn't also rotted. That said, making the repair invisible is difficult and requires a lot of experience matching colors with stain. On top of that the entire interior will have to be stripped and revarnished which is a big job. The teak decks are shot as you noted and every screw is a potential water entry point into the deck. A proper repair is also a HUGE job. The v-berth looks pretty unusable to me. Does the boat have a genset? if not there is no way to heat the boat away from the dock. Lots of issues, not to mention engine access. Not the sort of boat I would want.

      There's a genset under the helm. The midship companionway has sufficient grabreails. Engine access under that middle companionway looking aft is very good as is access hatch in starboard head. Lemon oil all the wood below keeps a satin shine. Once a year or more.

    This boat is going to cost a lot of money, and/or time to get right. The teak deck problem is not going to be an easy fix, and there's almost certainly going to be water damage to the deck core. $99K is too much, in my opinion.

    Captain I have to give my first negative opinion on a boat. But you have to see some boats with things you don’t like so you know what you do like. This boat felt inelegant. Kinda tubby and the dyneemo that chafes and cheap dated veneer. The odd portholes that gouge into the sides allow light we’re an afterthought. This boat felt like it could be owned by hoarders. A lot of storage everywhere but we’ve seen a lot more efficient use of space. I guess I compare it to the French woman’s boat we saw not long ago and there is just a feeling of a big warehouse compared to a classy boutique? Lol. I’ve done my best to describe my aesthetic without proper boat terms but forgive my armchair credentials. I just didn’t like this boat. I love you captain and RanDee though and love this channel.

    Capt Q, love your videos but you spend way too much time on things like Tru-hulls and the condition of the teak.I would rather you please use that time to show the major part of the boat, like the hull from a distance and the interior and the cockpit and engine.plea don’t spend so much time on the small stuff.

    This boat has to be tied for the worst interior layout I've ever seen. It's just...bizarre, it makes no sense. Maybe in person it's better? Other than that, I really like the boat, even being a double ender and having a huge rear end, it's still a nice boat. I wonder why the owner did all the fg work on the chain plate mount areas?
