Thanks, Justin! This is really helpful. And your video is such high quality, and you're a great speaker. Makes it easy to watch. Looking forward to the next one!
Very nice review, thank you for being succinct while covering the apps, the price points and most importantly the color differences in side by side with identical color commands. Having owned 4 V1 Hue bulbs for a while and replacing one that stopped functioning with a V2, they really suffer by not remotely covering Green & Cyan color ranges. I loved your comment "they should be called *lack of hue*" because that is completely accurate. Instead of buying more Hue bulbs I think I will look into LIFX. My only issue right now is I really only use the color functions when I play music and that is handled by Ambify so I am not sure how I would connect the LIFX bulbs to this system but that is some homework I need to do on my own. Thank you once again.
Do you by any chance have any idea if LIFX will add LED strips to their line up or even make their products use Zigbee or ZWave so we don't have to rely on WIFI too much?
good reviewer :) wish to see your channel growing as fast as possible. Btw, I have 8 lifx bulbs and they're something beyond amazing! I was about to buy the hue till I found that they don't really produce any good color! so if you're willing to go into cool lighting world, start with lifx and you won't be disappointed
+MURTADHA05 What are some good apps? Can you do "scenes" (i want sex scene for my bedroom like hue has) and are there apps like disco for hue, but for lifx instead? so many hue apps!
+RayCast01 Will provide links in the future! This should do the trick. Super cheap too! Let me know if you get it and how you like it :) www.walmart.com/ip/21881768?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227015795188&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40931240312&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78862930592&veh=sem#about
one more question: is there a way to make the bulbs accessible from only one device. so roommates don't have access to play with the colors when you are not there?
Okay..so they are like on version 3 of Philips Hue now. Which version of Philips hue are you reviewing? Would you be able to update the description for future viewers? Thank you for making this video!
D Mob that was my question too. I have hue gen 1 and the colors blue and green, simply don't exist! I bought some cheap bulbs just to compare and I was amazed by the difference. Shame on Philips!
you need to update this video...!! Phillips just updated their lights to Version 3. and fixed many colour issues. Though of course you still need the bridge and the price is the same. But colours are better, so there is that....
Yea im going to make a quick update video with the bulbs side by side as well as a video where I discuss some issues I've been having with LIFX....not happy about it. Thanks!
Just-In-Tech thats great, cant wait to watch it. thanks. PS>. I like LIFX because you dont need to purchase a starter kit or Hub or softwares like Phillips wants you to do. But of course, you already know that....hehehe. Anyways, I like the competition in the lighting industry, it keeps companies on their feet and better products coming out. Hence the reason why phillips release v3 because LIFX was kicking their asses in a few places....LMAO. Anyways thanks for the response and I will watch your updated video. cheers. :)
I've heard that too and Idk if that was more of a problem from when they first came out to the way they are now but I've never really had a problem. Except for this one time they wouldn't connect for 3 days and I was frustrated and I thought my $60 light bulbs all broke. I tried turning on and off the switch, reconnecting them and everything... Finally I realized the drawstring on the actual fan fixture was accidentally pulled and they were just off the whole time lol
Thanks for uploading, I was looking at these today in the shop. Does it do colour changing now, there was nobody on the shop floor to ask but I seen the Lifx changing colours.
you dont measure Wattage usage in standby. for example they are saying that old lifx uses 1.7w/hour just in standby mode. I measured and it was 2.5w in standby when it is turned off !!! WTF ? 2.5w all time just for wifi standbymode. 60w per day! 1.8kw in month per 1 bulb just in not emmiting light !!! you call it energy efficiant ?
Great review. Will the LIFX bulbs fit in your "normal" lamps? Also, if I am not at home, do I need to be on Wifi to control the bulb or will it work over regular cellular data?
Hey! Wait on that return...I've been having lots of connectivity issues with LIFX recently...and I'm comign out with a video explaining my issues...As much as I LOVE LIFX....Hue is just more reliable. Sad but true.
Has LifX addressed any connectivity issues with an update? I just got into my smarthome stuff during blackfriday sales, purchasing the Hue 2nd Gen Color and White Kit for $95. I like the lights, but the struggles they have with green and blue have been quite annoying. They are however insanely stable and I've yet to have any issues. Would you recommend hanging on to my Philips kit, or making the jump over and grabbing a couple 1000's to replace my 3 Hue color bulbs? I was all set to jump to LifX until I read the comment here. lol
Mitchell Toland Jr. I have the original bulbs and for the last few months connectivity/reliability has been horrendous. I have friends that have issues with the new bulbs/light strip too. Overall hue is SO MUCH more stable...
I agree...lol. I'll have both and am trying them out. Turns out that you need a $400 or $500 Triband router to make sure that you have no issues with the bulbs. That's really the main issue. The Phillips hue bulbs work better with a crappier Internet router because of the bridge that plugs directly into the router. This is why I upgraded from an airport extreme to the Linksys AC 5400. Also the life Expo bulbs are 1100 W versus the Phillips Hughes measly 800 W, I think I'm sticking with the Lifx.
EXCELLENT review. I was wondering what is the difference. I hope the lifx works well with Amazon Echo. I really don't like the idea of plugging another device on my router.
+Noneya Visness it does work well with Alexa, but be sure to check out my brand new update video that addresses some issues with LIFX and why Hue may be the better option!
Thanks, I had been looking for a comparison for ages, didn't find one , then went for LIFX, best decision I've ever made ! (The LIFX bulbs are actually 50$ now)
Yes, as long as you have some kinda Internet signal on your phone like WiFi 3g or 4g you can turn your lights on and off and everything else to your hearts desire. The most practical of uses would be if you are on your way home you can turn on the lights before you get there. Then again you can also just set it to that automatically when you arrive home
I got a lifx bulb so I can voice activate lights. The lifx failed in this area. It would not connect to the lifx cloud and I did everything as directed. I tried it for a few days contacted tech support and no help. Lifx works fine locally but not with alexa echo because it needs to connect to the lifx cloud in order for alexa to work. The lifx web site for support has limited information when having trouble. Not for the Philips Hue Well I bought start kit and it worked almost flawlessly. I mean with voice activation and use on the phone and it took less than 30 minutes to setup including with echo alexa. I went out and bougt three more bulbs and they connected flawlessly and with the Alexa echo. The only reason I would want to use it with the phone is to do setups with new bulbs and other items. The lifx is much more expensive The philips bridge isn't a big deal to me its small and works great. and the bulbs are cheaper. I dont see a huge diffence in brightness. I have the xfinity wireless router and the lifx has trouble getting out. I am a network engineer and I find the lifx to be a pain to setup for voice actiavation with the echo.
It does seem like it's biased but everywhere you look seems to say the same things. That the LIFX is cheaper up front and produce more vibrant richer colors, specifically green
Well to be honest I got my bulbs two days ago it works well and to say I was this close to getting the hue, but this video was one of many that changed my mind,.with that being said I just think he was leaning too much on the side on lif x
If I had to list some cons it would be the occasional bulb that just for some reason won't connect for a few minutes (generally happens when your trying to show them off of course), or just the simple fact that it's from a small start up company and you always gotta wonder if they'll be able to stay in business when the product is supposed to last 20 years or so.. Oh and the built in music visualizer sucks but if you get the light dj app it's fricken awesome
Now that it's been all year, Hue has been updated extremely and it works a lot better, is much easier to use, and the app is a lot better. This video is also very biased due to the fact hue CAN get to the cyan color, and CAN get to the green, you just didn't do it right. You have to adjust a little bit using the hue screen. The hue is darker because you don't want to fucking burn off your eyes. Why would you need a LIFX that is so bright you can't look at it? At least you can look at the hue's for a little longer. The hue also has Alexa and Programmable capabilities, while LIFX just doesn't have as many capabilities. Philips Hue is the way to go, they're much better than this guy makes it out to be. Overall: Philips Hue is the way to go.
FireController#1847 nope. Hue gen 2's secondary colors were just terrible. I returned mine the day after I bought them. I'm on lifx now and happy this far. Hue gen 3 does look like it fixed gen 2's color issues though.
I have the Philips hue Gen 3 and they have always worked out great for me. Every color I choose is completely great, and I've had no problems with them whatsoever. I don't understand why everyone is sh!tting on Hue, because in my expierience they've worked GREAT!
The bulbs have a continuos watt power draw, but overall, they wont cost you much a year - prob around $3. Also, that guys link is incredibly inaccurate and outdated.
The new Lifx (White 800 and Color 1000) use 0.7 W standby (Color 1000 uses 11W full on to produce 1000 lumens, thats pretty good). 0.7w works out to 6kWh/year, which is is 1-2$/yr (or less) depending on where you live. So not much compared to their purchase price. Given the development in this area, you will probably not use them more than 5 years. They are rated to 36t hours i.e. 4 years. Probably they last a lot longer when off/cold. Info found here: support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/202298574-How-much-power-do-LIFX-bulbs-use-
Re Hue Price. Come on Justin, everyone just waits for Black Friday, Prime Day or one of the regular promotional offers to stock up on Hue. You'd be a fool to buy Philips Hue at full price.
Well, I edit the video...All the graphics are a combo of my editing work and gfx packages and plugins I've bought. It's a lot of work! Happy to be your friend ;)
I can't even use IFTTT with Hue bulbs. I'm returning these Phillips bulbs and getting Lifx. Phillips doesn't want to make money and that had become obvious. You don't mage a product only to leave it with broken software or API. That's careless.
+dscotth05, it doesn't work with IFTTT. Support doesn't mean "actually works." There's a bug preventing me from even starting. Now, I have Lifx bulbs and they work with IFTTT. I get notifications through the bulbs and the lights turn on to 5% when I unplug my phone from the charger. I bet Ilumi and other brands work just as well, but not Phillips. I give them props for working on optical disc technology and bringing that to us, but these days there's a lot of weight you have to put behind a good app and Phillips doesn't seem to be aware of what should be an obvious bug. Test, test, test your software before calling it finished is all I'm demanding.
... Guess you just suck at setting up the IFTTT with the Philips hue... I've the philips hue and it works great with IFTTT, no problems whatsoever + very easy to setup...
That means you're not experiencing the bug that I experienced. I don't know how anyone can pride themselves over tapping on the same button and actually getting results, but if it makes you feel good, then I guess window-licking does too.
Richard Lamoreaux i respect both. They are a corporation...so what? They hire lots of people and lifx I am proud is able to compete and I hope someday gets big. The free market is a beautiful thing.
For you. I can see why people on the Apple train may care but I couldn't care less about HomeKit. Hues high price and weak output along with the sorry app cinched it for me. LIFX works well with the Amazon Echo. My main interface. But if that's not enough, it also works with Win10, Nest, Smartthings and my Harmony remote.
But what is their CRI?!? 90 or below? Colored lights are a fad... Smart LED adjustable white light at a high CRI will be what stand the test of time. Right now their still overpriced, a fad, and terrible quality of their CRI.
Dude, they are only $39. And who the hell cares about their CRI? If I ask for red, I get red. If I want to soften up the lighting with a touch of yellow I can. I'm not using them in a graphics arts lab. You out of touch bro.
Only 39 bucks for lightbulb, that has a worse CRI than the 3 dollars one. CRI ABSOLUTELY MATTERS! I could probably assume that most people are not going to be using colors for everyday living and a variance of white light is what will be on for the majority of the time, which with a low CRI will render you with a green/pink cast and cause colors of your wall, counters, furniture, etc. to look off. It's the quality of light that matters not the color of light. CRI is overlooked in consumer products cause people aren't told or shown. Any professional you ask that deals with some area of lighting with LED's, CRI is one of the main important aspects when considering purchase or recommendation. Yea go ahead fuss about the colors of your lights and how you can turn them off and on with my phone, but at the end of the day its the quality of white light thats being produced. But then again Im out of touch....
Siri turn on all lights..Siri turn on living room lights etc. Leaving the house and returning my lights automatically turn on or off using geofencing....
I honestly can't find one review that prefers Hue over LIFX.. Even CNET days LIFX is better and you know how much CNET loves to get in bed with the big corporations like Phillips over these smaller ones
I got both, I even have the osram lightify. Bought 2 of each. Placed one close to the router and another at the furthest part it could communicate. And LIFX has worked wonders compared to Hue and Osram. Hue is a bit better than Osram. Even at close distance the Osram lights sometimes doesn't respond to commands.
Thanks, Justin! This is really helpful. And your video is such high quality, and you're a great speaker. Makes it easy to watch. Looking forward to the next one!
great comparison!! i can't believe how much better the light is from the LiFX
You've helped me make my mind up on which bulb to buy! Thanks :)
Whats up buddy! Awesome reviews man, keep it up!
This a very good review!
This needs much more subscribers!
Very nice review, thank you for being succinct while covering the apps, the price points and most importantly the color differences in side by side with identical color commands. Thanks, you changed my mind on which brand to buy. It would be cool if LIFX had more of the products like Bloom, etc. Great video, great advice.
Do you by any chance have any idea if LIFX will add LED strips to their line up or even make their products use Zigbee or ZWave so we don't have to rely on WIFI too much?
There are working on it. www.reddit.com/r/lifx/comments/4y0sn0/testing_out_something_new_in_the_office/

Thanks for man! I'm subscribing! Good Job!
you have the order wrong in the thumbnail the Lifx is on the right but under it you have Hue?
I love the LIFX Bulbs. I just wish they made a switch like the Hue has.
+Toby Divine I completely agree. The flic works with LIFX, but it's bluetooth...not as great.
Can lifx strobe? lifx doesn't seem to have many apps it seems, after searching youtube. Disco party etc i havent seen with lifx!
I can't believe we're tempted to buy light bulbs for a 6000% mark up.
Really good video! You deserve way more subscribers.
+Brady2123 Gaming Thanks! I'm sure more will come as I post more vids :)
+Brady2123 Gaming Agreed!
What about 3rd party apps that work with them?
so the lifx bulbs that dont have a bridge, they each need to connect individually to the router?
Yep! It's pretty simple
one more question: is there a way to make the bulbs accessible from only one device. so roommates don't have access to play with the colors when you are not there?
No I think the only way you could do this is if you're running off a wifi router they can't access.
Good, straight, and forward video review. What app you used to control both the bulb?
+snakeye2669 It's called scintillator. Glad you like the review!
I have not seen a dimmer switch for the LIFX. Is there a compatable one??
Not that I know of...which is sad :(
There is the flic....which allows you to set like 3 options - its a bluetooth button and needs to be connected to phone or computer... Not ideal
+Just-In-Tech Great! Wasn't sure if that would work!😃
Amazon Dot($49) does a fine job although a dedicated switch would be nice.
This review is spot on. I came to the same conclusion when I tested both.
Hey really great video. I hope you make it in this biz, great start.
+Nate Fuller Productions Thanks! :)
Does LIFX have scenes though?
you need to update this video...!!
Anyways thanks for the response and I will watch your updated video.
cheers. :)
LifX also has Alexa support for amazon echo. Super nice.
i head this bulb connection is frustrating. it looses connection when using the app..
Thanks for uploading, I was looking at these today in the shop. Does it do colour changing now, there was nobody on the shop floor to ask but I seen the Lifx changing colours.
Yes LIFX sells color changing AND white lights.
Nice thanks a lot, I will be getting one soon.
you dont measure Wattage usage in standby. for example they are saying that old lifx uses 1.7w/hour just in standby mode.
Yep the new LIFX bulbs should fit normal lamps. You can control the bulbs from anywhere wifi or cellular!
Thanks Justin, this was great, but Lifx is more expensive in the end if you want more than one bulb.
I just bought 9 hues and I'm returning them for lifxs. Great vid

can u conect lifx bulb with amazon echo?
yep!
wish I had seen this video prior to spending my hard earned money on HUE ,good video dude ... keep it up
+piyaji840 Thanks!!! I feel ya! How are you liking Hue? Do you use the switch a lot? I wish LIFX had a switch... ;(
EXCELLENT review.
Thanks for the review going with Lifx
Thanks, I had been looking for a comparison for ages, didn't find one , then went for LIFX, best decision I've ever made ! (The LIFX bulbs are actually 50$ now)
Wow that's great to know, I seen them for 60€ so knowing their 50$ now is better if I can get them.
Marginal review quality, although you're not very diverse with your operating systems. You fail to mention that LIFX can be controlled via Google Now.
I just subscribed! Great channel. Just bought one (LIFX)
Dope review!
Can I control LIFX when I'm out of home?
Yes, as long as you have some kinda Internet signal on your phone like WiFi 3g or 4g you can turn your lights on and off and everything else to your hearts desire. The most practical of uses would be if you are on your way home you can turn on the lights before you get there. Then again you can also just set it to that automatically when you arrive home
Yes, most of the smart systems allow you to check to see if you left the lights on or the door unlocked and remedy the issue.
I have the xfinity wireless router and the lifx has trouble getting out. I am a network engineer and I find the lifx to be a pain to setup for voice actiavation with the echo.
Top notch review!!!
Great comparison. Thank you
The inability to get accurate deep colours with Hue I ended up sending them back and will be ordering LIFX in their place.
this review seems a little too biased... not buying it
It does seem like it's biased but everywhere you look seems to say the same things.
It's comparing the two products. Sure he seems to like one better, but I think he was fair, and told us the pros and cons of each.
He didn't mention a single con of LIFX.
FireController#1847 because gen 3 is good. gen 1 and 2 were not.
super helpful thanks man
You better have good WIfi... I have heard that they have connection issues. so I went with Hue. Love them!
also it has a continuous 1.7 watt power draw to hold that WiFi connection...
all the info you need...
greenmonk.net/2014/01/14/lifxs-internet-of-things-connected-bulb-the-good-and-the-not-so-good/
This link is incredibly inaccurate and outdated. The bulbs are $50/$60, you can access the lights over LTE, and the new LIFX bulbs are MUCH smaller.
0.7w works out to 6kWh/year, which is is 1-2$/yr (or less) depending on where you live. jesus, what's with the completely unnecessary jump cuts around 1:30-1:50? Distracting.
Re Hue Price. Come on Justin, everyone just waits for Black Friday, Prime Day or one of the regular promotional offers to stock up on Hue. You'd be a fool to buy Philips Hue at full price.
Lol this video is 3 years old! Also, LIFX has a big sale right now, Hue barely does
Justin_tech Lol just updating it for you. More gay tech please. Love it. X
Glad I kept my Living Colours generation 2 for better colour selection compared to Hue.
when i saw the thumbnail, i thought this guy was a screaming queen 😂
who does your graphics i like them be my friend okay
Well, I edit the video...All the graphics are a combo of my editing work and gfx packages and plugins I've bought. It's a lot of work! Happy to be your friend ;)
I thought this guy had like a million subs by looking at his video quality
Glad you like the quality!
I want to control it with Alexa LIFX won't do that. Sad they didn't include a dimmer.
yes LIFX works with Alexa.
I'm pretty sure it does. Coz, its how I set it up.
Thanks such a helpful and clear review!¬
I can't even use IFTTT with Hue bulbs. I'm returning these Phillips bulbs and getting Lifx. Phillips doesn't want to make money and that had become obvious. You don't mage a product only to leave it with broken software or API. That's careless.
Didn't look too hard? ifttt.com/hue
I don't know how anyone can pride themselves over tapping on the same button and actually getting results, but if it makes you feel good, then I guess window-licking does too.
the review was good. but even without it, the wonderful, horrible pun at the end was worth a like.
Last pun tho
Sponsor by lifx huh? 😏
Don't think so. LIFX is just better. Nice to see a small startup company kicking the big corporations butts.
Richard Lamoreaux i respect both. They are a corporation...so what? They hire lots of people and lifx I am proud is able to compete and I hope someday gets big. The free market is a beautiful thing.
Lifx > Hue. If you compare the newest generations.
ty 4 video
Really nice video. you definitely deserve subs (+1 from me). I have a new vlogging channel if you like to check out.
Paid Advertisement for Lifx? No Homekit is a deal breaker!
Philips Huehuehuehuehue xDDD +1 like buddy !!
Anyone ever tell you you look like Ryan Reynolds? Heh :p
Kind of a biased video
Where is it made? No way I buy made in china stuff. Have a nice day.
Iphones are made in china too.
+Tunge i dont use iphone, thats why. Have a good day.
£53 in uk. Which works out $65 for one.
Sorry Justin ... Hue is way better
can you explain why
Siri turn on all lights..Siri turn on living room lights etc. Leaving the house and returning my lights automatically turn on or off using geofencing....
but LifX works with Alexa and Cortana + LifX doesn't need a hub + LifX has better colors + LifX is brighter = BETTER. :D
No offense, but your mustache distracts me :/
+Irun Mon LOL. th-cam.com/video/Oda0fkYyAeI/w-d-xo.html

+Irun Mon No worries! :)
