The first thing you noticed about Jodie Foster is how accomplished she is as an actor. Then, after a few interviews, you realise that she is so accomplished because she is deeply thoughtful about everything. I'm glad she mentioned about acting in her 70s when she gets there because that will be something to look forward to. I just hope I'm still around to see her.
She's a Yale graduate. i believe she was in the top 5% of her graduating class. im younger than her but i distinctly remember her choosing to put acting on hold while she attended and how it was on the news or in magazines and this was the early 80s before the 24 hour news cycle.
she is also very intelligent and has integrity, unusual for celebrities. In addition I find her look quite attractive, its not obvious beauty, but she look way better than botox ladies
I love the loving, respectful way she discusses her mother’s illness - this incredible woman who obviously did a wonderful job raising Jodie Foster. Very few child actors have such long, distinguished, successful careers…..or mature into such wonderful adults.
@@Greenballoffire Read her brother's biography. He was also a child actor, slightly older than Jodie, and he has a different opinion of their mother to put it politely.
Nothing but pure class in every aspect, in front of the camera, behind the camera and in life in general. One of the best examples of how to be a fine human being.
This is one of the first appearances by Jodie Foster I've seen where she is so warm, open, and relatable. She's an accomplished, intelligent woman and has a lot to say after more than five decades in show business that's insightful and well worth hearing.
She apparently completely grew up since the age of three in front of the cameras and is such a genuine human being. Fantastic to see and she's a grest actress. Props to Jonathan Ross as well!
She's part of why Taxi Driver is a classic. No other actress of her age could have been better in that role. (Loved 'The Little Girl Who Lived Down The Lane'.)
Jodie and I were born the same year and I have enjoyed her career for most of my life and it is very refreshing, but not at all surprising really, to see her unafraid to age and looking forward to getting the great parts when she is in her 70's and wrinkled! Love her so much!
The career of Jodie Foster is a lesson, how a level-headed, talented, smart person can thrive in something as evil as the entertainment business, despite starting her career as a toddler. She's is the greatest actor ever.
@@cards0486she began to speak by the time she was 9 months, taught herself to read by age 3, was fluent in at least 4 languages by age 12, graduated high school as valedictorian
She hosted Saturday Night Live at age 14 & her poise/demeanor hasn’t changed a bit. Even keel & unphased, regardless of the situation. That’s quite an asset in life.
Besides her obvious intelligence, integrity and sensitivity let's not forget she's also a Yale University graduate! A very smart accomplished woman who has stuck true to her identity and values throughout her Hollywood exposure. And she was never caught up in the ego personality quest of stardom. In fact I think she really has disliked it and it has kept her more low profile in her later years, especially after the infamous stalking incident that caused a lot of damage to other people.
I am 79 with 5 grown children, 4 men and one daughter and Jody gives me something wonderful to give me something to really look forward to in our very near future.
I thought Jodie was just meh/blah UNTIL this interview. Such insight and intellect! Such joy! Such honesty! And what a perspective on life and illness. And that laugh is adorable!!!
Jodie Foster summarized it very well. Watching any Robert De Niro interview is a snooze fest as he does not have anything interesting to say to anybody. That kind of makes him even better actor, though. Many legendary actors are very charismatic in real life too and can do great roles by being pretty much themselves in the screen. De Niro's best days are far behind, but when he did great performances, he actually transformed to a complete different animal, which takes great skill. However, in these days De Niro lacks that passion in acting and thus his lack of natural charisma is also painfully evident in most movies he has done after mid 90's.
My all time favorite actress: Bugsy Malone, Freaky Friday, Taxi Driver, Stealing Home, Foxes, Accused, Silence of the lambs, Nell, Contact, The brave one, Carnage, the Mauritanian, Nyad and now True Detectice....all top notch films and performances, highly intelligent, director, writer, mother of 2... Female Icon of Hollywood❤
Wow. She said many deep and well put ideas about her life. But the last bit was absolutely profound, and he cut her off so inappropriately. No Johnny Carson there. Thank you Jody for speaking about a moment or time of awakening. And how women feel. And for all of your works. 🙏🏻
Back in the late 90s I almost went into a fight because of her. Not her fault lol. University student and was watching Contact in a small room with other students. I had already seen the movie and enjoyed it very much, also a fan of Jodie Foster. Two other students behind me, especially one of them, were making fun of the movie and of Jodie in particular. It was annoying partly because who wants to hear someone talking during a screening, but also because he was actively making fun of her. For some reason that pissed me off more than I had ever before in similar situations, or since. I stood up and moved towards him and threatened him. He said that they will meet me outside when the movie ends. He (they) never came. I always had a soft spot for her as an actor and I guess even more in that movie which was the perfect storm. I love her, sci-fi, Carl Sagan, that movie. I am glad it didn't end up in an actual fight, that would have been stupid. I still don't regret my reaction.
Only Scorsese could take an otherwise heartwarming mother& son road trip/making a new life movie, and throw in an encounter with a raging psycho possessive and violent would-be boyfriend, spewing profanities as he terrorises the mother. And of course, he is played by Harvey Keitel, in a kind of practice run for playing the violent pimp in "Taxi Driver."
Good interview. I agree with Jonathan - no matter how big or small the part, there's no doubt that Jodie Foster's time in a movie will be one of the best parts. A couple of her movies are some of my favorites, and when I did a little search of her while watching this, she's got very many great movies. It's actually nice to see someone who started as a child, get to this level and not crashed and burned. Her mom deserves a lot of credit. Too many of these Hollywood parents pushed there kids into it for the money, and didn't seem to care about the bad side of it.
De Niro reminds me of non-dualist Gary Weber. He trained his mind through thousands of hours of meditation to completely stop the "blah blah," or running dialogue we all have running through our minds. De Niro often has that same blank expression on his face when not being engaged that Weber has. I just think that De Niro comes to it more naturally. Their minds are drawn to stillness, rather than activity.
Jodie Foster is so intelligent and thoughtful and interesting. I loved her response to the sexual harassment question. Most women in any industry have experienced (at least some of) that kind of behavior. Jonathan Ross didn’t seem to want to actually talk about it at all.
Well the director Alan Parker was British and this is a British TV show. And I think - maybe I'm wrong? - it was filmed in the U.K. Twickenham Studios? Foster also appeared in another film sone years later ("Foxes" for those who aren't familiar with it), with Bugsy co-star Scott Baio, in a film directed by another Brit who came from that same advertising background and era as Parker, and made it big in Hollywood: Adrian Lyne.
I predict somebody is going to write an immaculate script that will catch Jodies attention, she does the movie, knocks it out of the park, wins the Oscar and reaffirms, yet again, just how baddass she is as an actress.
For the movie Nyad that's coming out, she is getting great reviews, even better than the star Annette Bening. That would be cool if 29 years later she gets another Oscar nomination.
Ooh, this mention of Nyad is really exciting, plus Jodie is such a big name that it might actually get to spend a week (or two if I’m/we’re lucky) in my little town on The Northern California coast.
Why is it that whenever i see a clip of a big Hollywood star on either J Ross or G Norton or whatever they're always sat next to David fuckin Walliams.
She's quite intelligent. Probably has a very high IQ. She graduated from Yale University. I was living in New Haven when she attended Yale. I went to see a movie on Campus once, and there she was sitting in front of me, down a bit, but having a good time with her friends. She took a break from acting to go to school. That's admirable !!
I am old enough to have seen her work as a child actor. She was special. Her whole career has a similarity to Clint Eastwood. Long, and full of quality. If their name is on the movie, you should see it. They don't make junk for paychecks. Is there more to the story about her passing on Hannibal, and the role going to Julianne Moore? She seems to be holding back.
While the obvious thing to say here is Jodie Foster is awesome... you have to give it to Jonathan Ross. He's a funny guy, but he is also a great interviewer and lets his subjects speak and has interesting stuff to ask. They always seem to have a good time on the show.
I wouldn’t be so sure about De Niro being an “ empty book”. On the set I’ve heard that he has incredible concentration and focus on the task at hand and she, being very professional and talented, but also a curious thirteen year old ,probably wanted to ask questions and chew the fat with him.

Indeed. I'm with Ross- "I'll sign up for that right now!" 👍
You shouldn’t think of actors being one faceted. You wldn’t be writing all that if you respected them as human beings.
