  • Hello
    This week I payed another visit to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. And to my surprise, CRRX 403, an EX CNW F7A with the B unit, sitting at the depot. I haven't seen this locomotive since crrx 728 (ex c20) was new to the railroad. I was super excited to see it run again. So I set up my gear and waited for departure. Then at 12:30 sharp, 2 blasts of the horn and off it went. The horn on 403 is an old cast p5 that was on CRRX 402. But since 402 is still currently out of service with no estimated time for repair, due to the pandemic. But 403 is good enough for me. So after I get the train leaving, I head to Parkdale to await the trains arrival. Then the train appears with a great angle of it, and we get a quick horn salute from engineer Steve. After the train stops for a few minutes, 3104 then starts to lead the train back to town. Thank you Nick for the horn salute :). After the train disappears behind the rocks, I drive back to Canon City to get the train pulling back to the depot. 3104 says hello with a loud crossing sequence with a perfectly tuned RS3L. After that we get one last sight of 403 before it weaves behind the trees. Overall, this was one of my most fun trips and look forward to many more to come. Thank you for watching.

    I see you still share the same F-Units we have quite a handful of on the ADIX roster as well. Definitely nice to see these ex DRGW beauties still up in action.

    Very nice Ryan. Some years ago we rode this, I see they added a couple more domes, perhaps they got them from Iowa Pacific. Also nice they have everything painted up the same. Great looking train. To bad they can’t get more trackage to the West, along the river. Another 10 miles would be nice , as the guests could watch more river rafting along the way. Thanks for posting and taking the time to do that video. Happy New Year, too 👍🎉🚂🇺🇸

      I appreciate it! Ya we got a couple new domes from Mt McKinley and from the railroad in Alamosa, CO. There are rumblings we may extend the route but its really light, doubt itll ever happen rumors. But happy new years to you!

    Man I love those 2 full length Pullman dome cars they got on this train. Sounds like their hood unit needs some wheel machining done on it though.

      2 are Budd-built former Big Domes originally built 1954 for the Santa Fe. The other 2 are Milwaukee Road "Super Domes" built by Pullman-Standard in 1952 for the Olympian Hiawatha.

    I rode on this last year. Great experience! I was curious though how their operations were as a push pull configuration. Do both consist push going up the hill? Also i recall hearing dynamic brakes while riding on the open air cars, is only the GP40 used for dynamics?

    • @SOU6900
      @SOU6900 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The F units, or the booster anyway, has dynamics on it. You can see the 48 inch DB fan on it if you look just right. Not sure you'd want the geep doing the dynamic braking when the F units are the current leading units.

      @@SOU6900 i was refering to the geep using dynamics while on the way down the hill.

      @@travisolson9190 when we had a GP on the train, and it just followed along till it was time to head back to town. Once it was time to head back, the engineer would get in and pull it away. And CRRC 3104s dynamics are pretty loud. Especially when you get near the hangin bridge, you can really hear them. All our units have dynamic, as i think that is a FRA rule.

    So that 2nd car after the loco IS an engine, correct? Just with no cab?

    • @jointlinerailfan403
      @jointlinerailfan403  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. That is what they call the b unit. The unit is basically an A unit which is the lead locomotive except with no cab. The reason for this is the main unit has 1500 horsepower. The b unit adds another 1500 horsepower. This in turn creates 3,000 horsepower over 6 axles.

  • @ernestanderson3726
    @ernestanderson3726 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could someone please educate me. The exhausts on both the A & B units, are those defusers to keep any sparks from exiting the locos and setting the forest on fire?

    • @jointlinerailfan403
      @jointlinerailfan403  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is exactly what they are. These particular units are a known troublemaker for sparks. Hence why we dont run them in summer. That and they dont have AC and it can get very hot inside the cab
