One of my favorite things about baseball is the fact that the parks come into play during the games. For example all football stadiums may look different but they all have the same field and play the same but in baseball everything is different from the green monster to tals hill to the short porch In right at Yankee staidium and even the brick wall at ATT Park. The stadiums come into play and I love that about the game of baseball
Just another reason why I love baseball. I mean, you can hit a ball 302 feet at Fenway and have it go out, and you can hit a 436 foot shot right to Tal's hill that's caught as a pop fly. I'm from Massachusetts, and the Red Sox are my favorite team, and even though they're doing awful this year, I just love Fenway Park. Not only does it have the shortest distance to the outfield fence (302 feet), but it holds both the records for tallest AND shortest walls, at 37 feet to left field over the monster and 3 feet all the way down at Pesky's Pole in right. Just the fact that it's America's oldest ballpark is amazing enough about it.
As a Yankees fan, I felt weird around loads of Red Sox fans, but it was a great ballpark. There's only 1 section in right field. Oh, and "Fenway Franks." Need I say more?
Louis Warren Comerica Park is 420 to center. So a few of the Tal's Hill plays would be just short of the wall there. Once They remove the hill and bring in the wall the Tigers will have the longest center field in baseball.
Louis Warren I saw your other comment but i would just like to say, not in Polo Grounds. Funny it was shaped like home plate. 279 in left, 257 in right, and in center....a crazy 455 feet.
I like how baseball stadiums have different gimmicks. Like basketball and football stadiums are basically the same, but I like how baseball stadiums vary. Like Fenway Park has the Green Monster , Minute Maid Ballpark has Tal's Hill, etc. Sure to some, it might be unfair, since only one stadium has that gimmick, but it's awesome to see how those gimmicks are implemented to a game of baseball.
What's crazy is that the Green Monster is actually necessary due to Boston refusing to allow the original Stadium owner to expand his lot and Stadium footprint past one street. Because of that, the monster had to be built to prevent a massive amount of homers over that wall because of its unreasonably short distance from home plate.
Tal's Hill was an homage to the old days of baseball. Many ballparks in the past had inclines in front of the outfield wall to serve as the warning track. Crosley Field in Cincinnati was the last.
The pole was actually padded, and only one player hit the pole during a game (the white gouge was still visible years later: Milwaukee Brewers' Richie Sexson.
They have to have the flags in a line. America, state (in this case texas) and team flag. In the 13 years since the opening of the stadium only one ball hit the pole and was ruled a home run. No player has hit the pole and no injury has been caused due to the hill
FYI, Tal's Hilll is named after Tal Smith. Smith was an aide to Drayton McLane (Former Astros Owner) in design of Minute Maid Park. The ballparks dimensions and unique angles were designed with Smith's input and assistance. Tal's Hill is a tribute to his creativity and contribution to the Minute Maid Park Project.
xArrivalx It's grass just like the rest of the field.. and you might also not know that Astro turf is called astro turf because it was invented as an artificial surface designed specifically for use in baseball's first indoor stadium, The Astrodome..
I've got two Tal's Hill tribute videos on this article I wrote in late '16, and while neither have the Edmonds catch, they comprise a fairly comprehensive collection of TH action, including a home run just to the left of the flag pole, a triple on a ball that hit the pole on a bounce, and many plays not shown in the video above: therunnersports.com/requiem-mound-astros-ditch-tals-hill-bring-wall/
Big Mistake! They took away what made their ballpark unique. It seems some of the most iconic franchises each have something unique about their park that stands out, the Red Sox have the Monster, the Cubs have the Ivy covered brick wall. Why would you want to remove your identity? And before we ever got to see a robbed homerun at the top of Tal's Hill (Well at least Im pretty sure it never happened). That hill was awesome. I used to look forward to watching my team play there. The flag pole I don't really care about but its sad to see the hill go. If they needed more space just get rid of the train not the hill.
Only homer I've ever seen over the center field wall was hit by Berkman. Landed on that angled tile with turf on it slightly to the right of the 436 sign.
I'm not a MLB fan. I do like baseball playing it. I do enjoy going to a MLB game in person I been to 1 at Wrigley Field which was awesome. I have question why did the Astros put a freaking hill and I guess a flagpole in field of play? it seams like it could possibly cause injuries to players who are running full speed looking in the air and all of sudden run into a I hill and if don't fall or twist ankle could then run into a big pole. So to any baseball fans could you please explain to me why they did that to this ball field. I get it is something different but it seams like a safety hazard and that they could add some other things that would make their park unique that wouldn't be hazardous. I'm not trying to bash the Astros I'm just really curious to the reason for this. also is it something that they did in olden days like babel Ruth or ty Cobb days?
+Jackson Goldstein yeah but at least they have warning track which should warn the players a wall is close. I actually don't like all these new ballparks anyways. I don't remember which one but I watched the HR Derby I do watch almost all of those and one field had a swimming pool that some balls were hit into. it seamed like the pool was placed in an area that would make great seats for fans. Also the park with all the boulders in outfield which I didn't hate just thought it was unusual. My 2 favorite parks are probably the oldest I would love to go to see a game at Fenway park because that is one of my favorites and my favorite is Wrigley Field. I loved the Ivy Fence and even though it was old it didn't seam that old they definitely made it great for fans. I also went to the old Phillies stadium and it was junk. so they definitely needed a new field don't know how nice it is but the old one was horrible. The only other stadium I went to was the Atlanta Braves old field Turner Stadium I think it was when they were always contenders for World Series but only won 1 I think. they had the Pitchers that were all 3 Hall Of Famer's I think Smolts Glaven & Avery I think. I was mad cause I was huge Deon Sanders fan and it was only reason I had my parents take me was to get to watch him play and my crappy luck he had day off. I did get to see him pinch run for someone and wow I didn't know he had the biggest behind I have ever saw on a man or woman probably. you couldn't tell it on TV but he did.
I'm just here for the lolz Did I say it was a bad idea? Nope. Did I say I wouldn't do it myself? Nope. Did I say that should remove the hill? Nope. Do I live in bubble wrap? Nope! But you better get off of youtube... I think you have a teeball practice coming up

MultiMaddenbeast As a Cubs fan I feel obligated to mention the ivy at Wrigley. :P
Damn i forgot that bro my bad.
Agreed , and go Cubs.

Any other ballpark, that's a home run
Maybe not tigers stadium
***** I meant to say any other current ballpark today but that's a good point

Definitely not Boston stadium
You won't even believe how many home runs I could've hit in MLB 15 The Show if that hill was not there
And it's still gonna be there for one more Year. till 2017
Cool Jhags Oml
Cool Jhags it’s finally gone
Hitting a 430ft flyout must suck.
Demarcus Barfield I know right
P
Demarcus Barfield l
I can only dream of hitting a 400ft fly ball. lol
I wanna see someone rob a homerun off of Tal's Hill. Robbing a 440ft homerun would be ridiculous
4 years late.
But here’s the link to the only robbed homer up on Tal’s Hill.

Do you have any clips of home runs over Tal's Hill? That'd be pretty cool.
I do
That wasn't on the hill ^
ikr.
In 2017, all those are homeruns
why? are all major fields going to like a 400 foot fence?
*****
Minute Maid Park is getting rid of Tal's Hilll and moving in the center-field fence, by 2017
i see
+the man Why did they put a hill out there in the first place? I never understood. Maybe Tampa Bay could put an alligator pit in center field.
the man the most dangerous part of talks hill is the flag pole
5:35 love that play and Fuld
Tal's Hill was an homage to the old days of baseball. Many ballparks in the past had inclines in front of the outfield wall to serve as the warning track. Crosley Field in Cincinnati was the last.
@5:47 F*ck God Damn! Lol
the worst idea for a stadium was that damn hill. will be happy when it's gone.
poet253rd it's gone
Bye Bye Tal's hill will miss ya Go Astros 2017 is our year
Jeffs world101 well you were right😂
This is also our year
H⭐
James Leatherwood looks like this thread is 1/2
You will be missed Tal's Hill
i was hoping someone would make this video........great job
I'm okay with the hill, but who put that pole on the left side of it? That is a safety hazard if I've ever seen one.
It was meant to be a throwback to old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, which had a flagpole in center field.
The pole was actually padded, and only one player hit the pole during a game (the white gouge was still visible years later: Milwaukee Brewers' Richie Sexson.
Thank you BronxBomber42 for this video as I am from a city North of Houston and a life time Astros fan!
I miss Tal's Hill.
Who the hell puts a damn light pole in the middle of the playing field?
It's a flag pole it is so stupid.
Oh well.. there's a flag in the field- wtf?
They have to have the flags in a line. America, state (in this case texas) and team flag. In the 13 years since the opening of the stadium only one ball hit the pole and was ruled a home run. No player has hit the pole and no injury has been caused due to the hill
jp5ftw Wow, you know alot about that flag pole......! It's still an obstacle and foolish to have put it there.
+Aaron Anon richie sexton hit the flag pole
Baseball is my life! Thanks BronxBomber42 for making videos that I can enjoy and look forward to watching! Great videos!
3p!c Gam3rz You need to get a life.
+drServitis you need to get a girlfriend
I miss the hill so much
Tim Hurst fuck off man, that shit was cool and unique.
Now long gone. RIP Tal's Hill.😥🤣😥🤣😥😥😪😪😢😢😢😰😰😰😰😰😱😱😱😱⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️
This is so great! thanks!
I’m sad that it’s gone. It made the park so special
Andruw Jones' catch was the second consecutive pitch where he climbed the hill. The first one he just missed.
Thanks for the background Jermster. I was looking for something about it and couldn't find anything.
Why did they get rid of this? Reminded me of Crosley field, such a shame. Really added a nice aesthetic to this park.
I like how after the Astros removed the hill they got a lot better
Yeah they put a camera there
It always amazes me that Lance Berkman played centerfield
Right! I thought I was the only one haha.
No Jim Edmonds?
My calves are burning from watching this.
Is the hill astro (no pun intended) turf or actual grass?
xArrivalx It's grass just like the rest of the field.. and you might also not know that Astro turf is called astro turf because it was invented as an artificial surface designed specifically for use in baseball's first indoor stadium, The Astrodome..
Matt H.: do you know why it was invented?
We wont the world series without tal's hill
Love this account!
How can you have this video and not include Jim Edmonds' catch from 2006?
RIP Tals Hill
I was watching the Beltran game, the game went like 16 innings.
5:46 I heard someone say "Fuck! God damn!"
Tal's hill was made by tal?
It was named after Tal Smith
Team Rvhx who is tal smith
He was someone in there organization a long time ago
Team Rvhx oh yeah thank u
God bless u
I got you bro. check out my content too if you like baseball
R.I.P Tal's Hill
Holy crap 1:59 the sound
Is that at Houston's stadium?
No Houston just plays on it at their home games cant you see that it's not theirs?
Jk
yes
Bring back tals hill
Goodbye Tal's Hill.
You're as old as me
The center field distance will now be 409 down from 436 making it the sixth longest in MLB .
3:44 Logan Morrison went to my school
Why are they removing the hill?
Third one was the best
Why being removed?
Safety hazard
Minute made park is doing remolding so their will be seats and restaurants
EpicDiabetic not why at all
Caden Wright Yea, it is.
EpicDiabetic not even close. gtfo troll.
RIP Tal’s Hill
What if the ball hits the pole on the left of the hill and then is caught by he center fielder. Is the batter out?
No. It would be as if the ball hit the wall
#SaveDodgerfilms
Home runs over Tal's Hill?
+Sam Baseball Tal's Hill is where baseballs go to die.
RIP Ken!
the astros uniforms before the transition to american league looked like the carls jr/hardys logo
Or Seattle?
where is the jim edmonds catch??!!?!

R.I.P Tal's Hill I Am A Astros Fan
Its sad this thing is getting removed sure its stupid for it to be there but thats what great about it its a fun part of that ballpark
I wonder if anyone knows why it's called Tal's Hill, like who is it named for?
Tal Smith
It's named for Tals Smith. He's was the owner of the Houston Astros. The hill was a tribute for his creativity and his art.
Smith never owned the Astros. He was the club president.
Omg lance Berkman it's been forever since I heard that name
Yes my dream finally came true 1000th like
I was expecting to see Jim Edmonds catch.
This was made on my NINTH B-DAY
crazy that no one ever got seriously injured there
Why do these all involve the astros?
swrightpvp Tal's Hill is at their stadium....
LOOOOL
Did you know that if Houston lost the 2015 AL wild card game at N.Y.Y they would have gotten rid of talks tal's hill that off-season.
My dad used to work here and when I was little I'd roll down it
How is that thing legal?!
It passed an inspection, and earned its certification.
Why Carlos Beltran is one of my favorite players: he doesn't showboat
Sam food is the goat
Fuld*
Where's Edmonds? But that Berkman catch was beautiful.
Rip tal’s hill
Only homer I've ever seen over the center field wall was hit by Berkman. Landed on that angled tile with turf on it slightly to the right of the 436 sign.
Was a neat feature but glad its gone. The stadium looks way better and has more features and views.
Still not as frustrating as the Polo Ground centre field - nearly 500 feet!
What is the hill even for? Decoration?
It was made for Tal Smith. He was the owner of the Houston Astros. The hill was a tribute for Tal Smith's creativity and his art. I think.
Beltran made that catch while he was a Met. He was a good player but I think he's in St Louis now
Yankees.
Oh sorry my mistake Jair Oglivie
Just one MLB team off buddy get it next time
+Aspect Fighter just one letter "off" buddy get it next time
Riley Wolfe lmao
Jim Edmonds had the best catch on Tal's Hill.
Berkman's catch was the best.
i don't know why the stadium looks dark in the center field when there was a hill
I wonder if anyone has hit a ball off the pole or run into it
Richie Sexson hit one off the pole for a triple.
I'm not a MLB fan. I do like baseball playing it. I do enjoy going to a MLB game in person I been to 1 at Wrigley Field which was awesome. TBH I'd rather run into a hill then in to a wall...

+Silverado4x4 not sure of the name but the dimondbacks have a pool in the stadium
+Silverado4x4 chase field (Diamondbacks) has a pool and angel stadium has the boulders
The astros are going to the World Series
Too bad it's not there anymore
RIP
I didn’t know it was 436😳 but I’m glad they got rid of it, it was pretty pointless and dangerous
What's the reason for that hill any way xD
AwesomeRage15 The architect was a massive troll. He laughs every time an Astro wobbles around trying to catch a 430ft bomb.
It was a tribute to the natural incline in the outfield of Crosley Field in Cincinnati.
436 ft. That's crazy
Astros for life
Jim Edmonds had the finest catch in the hill in 2006.
I remember Richie Sexson hit one 20 feet up he pole on tals hill, but because the pole is in play, it wasn't counted a homer
How could you leave out Jim Edmonds?!
Danger Hazard
Berkmans was pretty good, but Beltran was so damn smooth
I wonder if astro's outfielders practice catching fly balls on that hill
I was expecting to see Jim Edmonds.
Some poor unexpecting outfielder is gonna go all out for a fly ball and tear their ACL or hyper extended their knee...
I'm just here for the lolz Did I say it was a bad idea? Nope. Did I say I wouldn't do it myself? Nope. Did I say that should remove the hill? Nope. Do I live in bubble wrap? Nope!
But you better get off of youtube... I think you have a teeball practice coming up
Should’ve kept the hill, remove the damn pole!
