I don't know how wild I am about pitchers throwing at celebrating batters but the two that really are stupid is not bunting away a no hitter and not bunting when to expand a big lead, especially against good line ups. Overcoming a 7 run lead may be unlikely but it's not at all unheard of.
bro unwritten rules basically mean: "You are to good, now dont do anything just look at it right in the middle a hanging slider and let it become a strike since you have a lead."
The first one isn't an unwritten rule. If you have position players pitching, chances are there will be hard contact. It would be worse if they were just standing there taking walks off of him.
Love baseball but man I’m tired of these sensitive unwritten rules crap. We don’t like being shown up yet now we want everyone to do a celebration after a solo homer because it’s fun and engaging for kids. They don’t know what they want.
If you’re not gonna field a pitcher you can’t be mad people hit bombs off you. Imagine a football team losing their center in a blowout and then getting mad the d line is still rushing, like wtf
The red sox one is bull. Escobar was right for standing up for himself 5 points is not enough of a lead to feel that way. You need at least an 8 point lead before applying any type of mercy rules.
As a college player, i can understand that people dont want to get run up on. But at the same time, what lead is safe? I just watched my Padres come back on the Cubs down 8 runs. Unless the unwritten rules say you also cant come back and win, they are pointless. Dont get mad, get better. If tonight wasnt your night, tip your hat and move on to the next one.
The main one I will never understand is when a team is beating on another team, and they take out their pitchers and let a 3rd baseman or whatever pitch. You're just suppose to let that go and not hit the ball as best you can? I'm sorry, but if I'm beating on you so bad and you want to protect your pitchers, I'm going to bury you on the scoreboard if you're not going to take this game serious till the end. Hold this L, I'm sending this lollipop lob ball over center field.
Forcing teams not to get more runs when they have a big lead is stupid. What if the losing team rallies a comeback? Will they stop scoring runs? No way....If I was coach id hold nothing back
1:03. I thought the goal of the team at bat is to score as many runs as they can. Been watching baseball for 40 years and hearing this is a first for me.
The “unwritten” rules have developed over more than a 100 years of organized baseball. The unwritten traditions and rules have historical roots and have been tested over the decades and thousands of games. Players who don’t respect those rules usually don’t thrive in the Majors.
I agree the unwritten rules are often overly sensitive but if you think about it, a lot of the unwritten rules from the fact that in baseball, there’s no game clock. If you’re winning and getting hits and scoring and the defense can’t get an out, there’s nothing stopping you from scoring 30 runs. The beaten team has to take the beating for as long as the winner feels like. That’s the source of many of the unwritten rules. In football/basketball/soccer/hockey, even if you’re getting dominated, at least you can look up at the clock and see it will be over soon.
Yeah okay… If im in MLB, I’m hitting everything I can. Stats write checks-not unwritten mercy rules. Besides, baseball allows comebacks until the final out is recorded. It’s not like it’s timed
The problem is that the unwritten rules are in effect going against the actual rules. Like officially there is no way to forfeit a game. But effectively that is what the unwritten rule seeks do. Like from a strictly competitive standpoint why should a team allow their opponents to "save their fresh pitchers"? So they can lose to them the next day? If you want to go home, put someone good in and get the outs. If they don't like that there isn't a forfeit or mercy rule. They should be lobbying MLB to add one rather than hitting guys for playing the game out as intended. Seems like misplaced frustration.
So should we have a little league 10 run rule.. stop the game at 7 inning if a team has 10 run lead. Or if a football game is 3 TD lead the beginning of the fourth quarter or 30 pt lead at a basketball game.
The absolute worst unwritten rule in baseball is don't bunt to break up a perfect game/no hitter. Why should the batter, an opponent, have the slightest worry in the world about the pitcher's achievement? Especially in a close game. I was watching a game years ago and a pitcher had a no hitter going into the eighth of a 1-0 game, and the lead off batter bunted a base hit and everyone lost their mind about it. The batter is trying to win the damn game. How does the pitcher's potential no hitter take priority over trying to win the game for your team? For no reason other than "that's not how you're supposed to play baseball". Just so stupid.
1:40 really isn't even that safe of a lead... yeah 5 runs is a lot, but they still had 2 innings to do it. There are 3+ run innings every night in baseball.

For example, when a right batter is at bat, the umpire could slide over the opposite batters box to see the pitches and go to right side box when a left batter is batting.
@@raantaas96 I'm speaking specifically about the strike zone as it appears in the baseball book of rules. The vertical strike zone is between the armpit and knees. They call anything above the belt a ball. Bs.
@@kelvinmathews7198 In theory that would work, as almost any theory in reality do.
But, as we all know, not all players are exact same heights or girth. That is why the home umpire standing behind the catcher makes ABSOLUT non sense.
Right hand batter??? Position Home Umpire to the left hand batters box. Left hand batter??? POSITION Home Umpire to the RIGHT hand batters box.
If those Home Umpires are cowards of balls hitting them, bring back those couch cushion guards that cover their whole body outside the head.
All these unwritten rules so you don't hurt a millionaire's feelings while playing a sport according to the actual rules? Come on. This is probably the thing I hate most about baseball.
Your bias is clear when you said millionaires instead of players 🙄 Other than that I agree
Lmfao they’re not just millionaires they earned their positions, literally. They’re athletes who are at the highest level of playing
And, the rules don't just apply to the Big Show. These rules are taught from high school to college and the farm leagues.
Tim Anderson getting mad at getting hit and wanting to fight has me laughing
It's the same as giving up if you put a defensive player as a pitcher so as the other team batting you should be able to tee up as much as you want because the other team gave up
The Angels beat the Rockies 25-1 and I really thought we were going to see some bean balls but to my surprise, there was no tension.
Angels lost the series anyways in true Angels fashion 😂
i love it when umps try to enforce an unwritten rule.
1:12 funny.. bunting with a lead is worse to the astros than cheating 😂
We still got 2 titles that isn't going to change no matter how butt hurt you are, keep crying. 😂😂
@@nukeboy4939 You sound like an immature 12 yo little boy 🤣
When an opposing manager complained when Whitey Herzog's player stole a base when the Cardinals were up by several runs late in the game, Whitey responded that if the other manager wants to promise his players won't hit homeruns, he'll promise not to have his guys steal bases. Perfect response. Some of this "unwritten rules" stuff is BS. Now, showmanship deserves a smackdown.
I would not consider a 5 run lead with two at bats to go a runaway game. 7-8 runs, sure.
Teams have come back from a lot more than 7 runs before
I don't know how wild I am about pitchers throwing at celebrating batters but the two that really are stupid is not bunting away a no hitter and not bunting when to expand a big lead, especially against good line ups. Overcoming a 7 run lead may be unlikely but it's not at all unheard of.
bro unwritten rules basically mean: "You are to good, now dont do anything just look at it right in the middle a hanging slider and let it become a strike since you have a lead."
Manager before a game: Alright guys. Get out there and win this one!… but not by too much. 🤔
That homerun got him cut as well because LaRussa's old school philosophy wasn't having it
If it's not written, it's not a rule. Get over it. Teams have come back from being down 12 runs total and from being down 9 in the 9th inning.
The first one isn't an unwritten rule. If you have position players pitching, chances are there will be hard contact. It would be worse if they were just standing there taking walks off of him.
It's because he swung on a 3-0 count like seriously?
"Why are you still playing when you have significant lead?"
"Because I have more respect for the rest of your team than you do."
“Boost your own numbers”. Yes, damn right I’m gonna try to boost my numbers. My salary and livelihood depends on it b
To paraphrase Bill Bellichek: “if you don’t like us doing it..go ahead and stop us”
Love baseball but man I’m tired of these sensitive unwritten rules crap. We don’t like being shown up yet now we want everyone to do a celebration after a solo homer because it’s fun and engaging for kids. They don’t know what they want.
Easy way to avoid having your feelings hurt - dont lose by so much.
If you’re not gonna field a pitcher you can’t be mad people hit bombs off you.
Imagine a football team losing their center in a blowout and then getting mad the d line is still rushing, like wtf
Altuve telling anyone what is not acceptable is Comical.
Lol. Yeah. Pot meet kettle.
If it’s not important enough to be written down in the rule book it’s not a rule 😂😂😂
fuck yo feelings.
So many of these are so stupid, teams have come back from 7+ runs before, you're professionals
7 runs can be scored in a single inning. Unreal to quit, ever.
The red sox one is bull. Escobar was right for standing up for himself 5 points is not enough of a lead to feel that way. You need at least an 8 point lead before applying any type of mercy rules.
Trying to score runs while winning has zero to do with self esteem & everything to do with doing your job 🙄
Altuve is no leader. He let his guys cheat.. but hey go ahead and tell another club how to play.
Nah, unwritten means unwritten, you play to win, the opposing team can always come back and win. Players are paid to win.
Im losing track of all these unwritten rules. Would be helpful if someone wrote them down
Big of an All-Star like Altuve to tell someone just trying to stay in the league that they can’t try and get on base. Jed got a family to feed.
No way....If I was coach id hold nothing back
Most teams don't anymore. It was stupid from the get go
1:03. I thought the goal of the team at bat is to score as many runs as they can. Been watching baseball for 40 years and hearing this is a first for me.
Bo Porter thought he was all that. He wasn't even the bag of chips.
It just illustrates how much anger resides in baseball players. A lot of spoiled millionaires need to get a dose of reality
I don’t like unwritten rules. Feels like participation trophies at times. Hit when you want, kill no hitters with a bunt, and deal with it. 🤷🏽♂️
Baseball players are 10 ply. So are the fans
Unwritten rules: Reason baseball’s popularity is declining
So should we have a little league 10 run rule.. stop the game at 7 inning if a team has 10 run lead. Or if a football game is 3 TD lead the beginning of the fourth quarter or 30 pt lead at a basketball game.
You throw me a cookie and I am going to tag it. What I should ground out? Come contract year every HR and RBI means $$$
Without context what the unwritten rules in the particular clips are, this vid doesnt make any sense.
I dont think bunting should be allowed until your team makes it to first base.
If you do anything but get struck out, pitchers throw a hissy fit
I see bunting with a lead as a situation in wich you can practice, learn and expirment with different stuff
Absolutely... But when it's just to ruin a no hitter it's just ignorant
Baseball's unwritten rules are stupid. YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!
I'm a Royals fan, but if you hit a 95+ MPH Fastball over 400 feet and does a bat flip. It's only the pitchers fault that you gave him a pitch to hit.
Being blown out. Pitch better… the fact you have to put a position player in. Is your decision and you have to deal with it! It’s childish imo.
If it's not written it isn't a rule....play to win
Just so stupid.
can't swing with a big lead, can't bunt with a big lead, hell can you even take a walk with a big lead?
I really don't understand the bunting thing. If it's so easy to get on base by bunting, why wouldn't I just bunt every single time?
1:40 really isn't even that safe of a lead... yeah 5 runs is a lot, but they still had 2 innings to do it. There are 3+ run innings every night in baseball.
What’s crazy is they all can end up on the same team
